Why Formula 1 Cars are IMPOSSIBLE to Drive in the COLD

  • Every now and then the F1 organisers throw a spanner in the works - and we typically get a very unusual Grand Prix. And that’s likely to be true for the first race on the new circuit in Las Vegas.
It’s fast, it’s a street track and the race starts at 10pm local time. But the biggest challenge for the teams is that at that time, it’s going to be cold… really cold.
So, why is the drastically colder than usual temperature such an issue? What are the teams and drivers going to do about it? And are we going to see an incredibly chaotic race?
Formula One cars really don’t work well at cold temperatures. Now, this is counterintuitive. You might notice that all of the fastest laps at your local kart track were set in the evening or at night. But in F1, the power units and in particular, the tyres just aren’t made to work when temperatures are below about 15 degrees celsius.
And you might ask, why? Well, the vast majority of the season is within a fairly tight temperature band, within the mid to high 20 degrees C range - and it has been for a while.

    • @PotatoeJoe69
      @PotatoeJoe69 Před 5 měsíci +18

Absolutely, especially for forced induction engines -- cold air is a Godsend. They'll make more power in Vegas than at any other track, and also (potentially) make the most downforce as cold air is more dense air (but that's up to the teams adjustments, of course).
Vegas is going too be a very fast track, one of the fastest overall if not blatantly THE fastest.

    • @fatbikemontage2931
      @fatbikemontage2931 Před 5 měsíci +12

Definitely cold air is denser and if air is damp this also aids power. But it comes at the expense of more fuel, which means the cars would start heavier. The bigger factor though is Las Vagas is at 600m altitude. Not quite the effect of Mexico City but certainly less downforce and less oxygen for combustion.
Of course more power, less downforce and cold track temperature means less grip. The setup of the cars will be interesting, as I reckon less downforce will aid the tyres warming up, cause they squirm around more.

But I believe it is common where night temperatures are significantly lower than daytime temperature for any moisture in the air to start to condense, its not water vapour (humidity) that improves engine performance, but droplets of water. Hence why I think Subaru used to have a water injection system on some of the WRX cars, trying to replicate the effect.

At the risk of re-opening an old wound, this tire temperature issue is one of the analysis theories for the Senna crash in 1994.
Cold tires due to a slow safety car and late braking coming into the corner causing a massive lack of grip and steering resulting in the tragic straight run into the barriers.
Obviously there were many other theories, but the parallels are similar enough to bring the horrible memory back.
Great channel as always. Cheers back at you sir.

As a spectator, it was great the track was short 2.3-mile circuit was completely confined to the car park of the Caesars Palace Hotel so the cars went by in less time which kept the excitement up. Good Luck to all the Drivers, who would have thought it would be cold!

experinced drivers know a lot, he is a couch therefore he have seen many driving styles, you can tell by braking points, how hard you push your throttle and how often the car is on limit, braking too hard means you use more the front wheels, pushing the throttle harder means you use more rear wheels, also how hard you steer affects ho0w you use the front wheels, in actual fact an experinced driver can copy the driving style from the car in front by just following it, hardly can replicate it alone, in my experience as a sim racer i used to brake harder than my team mate using more my tyres for qualy he even asked me how i braked too late, as its obvious i used to lose my wheels earlier, while him preserved them longer, when i raced i braked early and coast more in order to save wheels which save me 4 laps more than my team mate allowing me to make other strategies with fuel despite being slower, what makes thing interesting is that you win position by a good start, pit stops or good strategies, even you can keep your position in a race whom you are the slowest with a good strategy, in many races i was the slowest in the grid, sometimes with a good strategy, tyre managment and some luck you can make a top 5 being the slowest or keep your position for a good bunch of points

This is what the ideal F1 calendar should be:
    -Season opener in Melbourne
    -Sepang
    -Istanbul
    -Hockenheim
    -Monaco
    -Silverstone
    -Montreal
    -Austria
    -Magny Cours
    -Hungaroring
-spa the last race before summer break again
-monza (with gravel around the parabolica again)
    -suzuka
    -CotA
    -season closer in Sao Paulo
MAYBE throw in Bahrain, Barcelona, or Imola too, but that's it; absolutely no more races than that... March to October, like how it used to be. If a bunch of Arab oil sheiks want to drop some coin to have races around their fake marinas, then we can have "wild card" slots on the calendar with circuits that rotate every few years.
If they come even close to adopting a calendar like that (with no Miami, no Mexico City, no Qatar, no Abu Dhabi, etc), along with going back to smaller, more nimble cars again that aren't these understeering, lumbering behemoths that look like parade floats when they're going through slow corners, and show signs that they are phasing out DRS, then I will go back to being as head-over-heels in love of a die hard fan as I used to be when I first started watching. But until then, they're on thin ice with me personally, and I'm currently counting my days for how much longer I'm honestly going to keep dedicating time to this sport.... and I say this as somebody who hasn't missed a single race since 2005 (and watched most of the qualifying sessions as well), for whatever that's worth.
First and foremost priority before any of that other stuff though is completely scrapping these silly SpRiNt WeEkEnD sideshows... ugh.
If they make those changes, then I seriously couldn't care less about anything else going on. They could still have celebrities I don't care about taking up screen time, keep the Netflix and Disney programs, increase the idiotic hybrid electrification, have one guy winning every race by a minute, Brad Pitt, whatever... That's all water under the bridge. But imo, they are on life support (increase in number of fans doesn't matter if all these new fans only casually tune in to an occasional race here or there, while they piss off & shove out the die hard ones. Quality > quantity) until they 1) get rid of the sprints 2) put the cars on a diet, and 3) reduce the calendar, and thus, viewer saturation. While we're at it, clean up the stewarding too, and stop trying to generate chaos.
If you look at what happened with the decline of nastycar after that series peaked in the 90s, it's hard to deny that Formula 1 is taking the first steps down that exact same path with all the gimmicky changes they've been making.
