  • Hey everyone, in this video i'm going to show you how to change the spindle bearings on a kubota z421. Doing theses types of jobs can sometimes seem overwhelming but on the kubota z421 it really isn't very difficult at all, so follow along and maybe save some money on doing this job yourself.

Here is a link to Messick's where I got the spindle bearings from. They were great about getting them shipped out in a timely manner. I had my new bearings in just a few days.

210hrs on my 421 so far zero issues. But I’m thankful for your 421 videos, and plan on doing this as preventative maintenance in the future. Keep ‘em coming, great vids!

Your video helped keep me from replacing an entire pulley assembly; was able to do the bearings only! Thank you!

Thanks for the video. I have a Z421 with 260 hours on it. I was doing a deck scrape out and a blade change yesterday and discovered a bad spindle bearing on my center blade and an ever so slight play on the right blade. I decided to replace the bearings on both. the left was fine. I wonder if there is something about the belt geometry that makes the center bearing fail soonest? The parts guy at Kobota even asked me if the spindle I had brought in was the center one. Mine didn't go so easy. The center one went OK. The right spindle had the blade end bearing seized on the shaft. I was able to use my 20 ton hydraulic press to press it off the shaft. It took a lot of force, and lacking the press, there was no way I would have gotten it off. Other than that, it went smooth. The torques per the manual are... Spindle nuts to deck- 60 foot pounds, blade to spindle- 85 foot pounds, Spindle to shaft pulley nut- 120 foot pounds, that is if you are fussy about factory spec torques. I am sort of. Like he says, don't forget the shaft collar which is the spacer between the bearings. I used some anti seize on the pulley where it slides on the shaft. Tip; if you torque the pulley nut, be sure to tighten the blade on the shaft first or the shaft will spin while setting the torque on the pulley nut. Use a wood block to hold the blade while tightening. This rebuild is the way to go vs replacing the whole spindle assembly as long as the spindle housing is not damaged.

May be something to that center spindle bearings going out first, thanks for the added info torque specs etc

great video. So much help. I had the same issue and was able to fix it myself with help from his video. Thank you. Go Ducks

Got a 123s. Exact same process for those spindles. Having done all 3 before I think it’s possible to actually replace the bearings without removing the spindle housing. I’ve got to replace 2 sets of bearings but just from a cleanliness standpoint, I’ll likely remove the housings. I have to replace idlers often, every 50-100 hrs and spindle bearings maybe twice that. At least it’s easy to do. Good video.

Yeah I’d say you can replace them without removing the spindle housing, may try that next time, thanks for watching!

I have the same Z421 60 deck with 540 hours and just replaced spindle bearings for first time. I never had a dust cover for any of the 3 spindles and didn't see them on your mower either. Look up part K5653-34520 and it might protect your bearings from hay bale twine.

Just prior to changing these bearings was the deck making a vibration racket while just sitting still not running over anything to cut. Ive got the kommander 421 60 cut and its starting to make a good bit of noise now at just over 210hrs. Ive been wondering if the bearings are going out and if their was a way to make these spindles greaseable

    • @WilliamsonRidge
      @WilliamsonRidge  Před rokem +1

Yeah I started noticing a rattling/vibrating sound before but it seemed to take a pretty good while before they went completely out, I’ve seen some folks make some John Deere spindles greaseable but it’s not something I would do myself, you have to drill and tap the spindle to put in a grease zerk, plus I’m not sure if it good to try to grease a sealed bearing so you may have to remove the seals or get bearing without seals and if you grease to much you can actually cause excessive heat build up, some people I’ve seen took the seals out and packed with grease then put seal back in and that actually can cause the bearing to wear out faster because of heat buildup.

Just curios with the removal of the deck. Do you think it would easier to do ? Good video !

It might if you have a way to support the deck up off the floor

My Z 411, with the one spindle that is giving me a noise issue, I’m having problems removing the top nut. In your video, it seems very easy. Did you secure a breaker bar on the bottom nut to prevent it from spinning? Even when I put a breaker bar on the bottom nut, with significant force and pressure, I cannot get this top nut off. Any suggestions from any of you on this thread?

They should be grease able but they are not.

You need to get them and put them on.
It will save you putting in new bearing next time.

That bailing twine destroyed the seal.

The 100 and 400 series machines are garbage. Sealed bearings don't last. My previous machine was the ZG20, kept it greased, and never had an issue.

I haven’t had anymore problems, but mine was definitely caused by hay string being wrapped up in it
