    Ok I've figured out how to implement TRACK REVERSE with a Control Change message. FWIW here it goes:
    The byte to be sent at the end of the CC message has to be chosen from one of the two ranges
    range ON = 0x40...0xBE
    range OFF = 0x00...0x3F
    Sending an ON byte puts the RC-5 in the ON state where the track part (but not the rhythm part) will be played backwards.
    Sending an OFF byte puts the RC-5 in the OFF state where the normal forward behaviour is restored.
    These CC messages can be emitted at any time, including in the middle of a loop already playing, as demonstrated by JohnPaul at 12:00
    Now I don't know why BOSS has chosen ranges instead of two discrete values. Possibly to accomodate for some MIDI control surfaces. Many of those have lots of pots and faders...
    Note that values from the range 0xBF...0xFF should not be used in the CC message, simply because they have absolutely no effect on the current state.
    From a programming standpoint, only two values are needed, e.g. valueON = 0x60 and valueOFF = 0x20 and all the rest is merely implementation detail. For example, putting aside the matter of switch debouncing which can be tackled with very easily by software, the behaviour on the MorningStar demonstrated here could be summarised like this: send a valueON whenever the switch is pressed, send a valueOFF whenever the switch is released.

      @@JohnPaulMusicUK I'd be glad if this can help anybody. A quick follow up:
      Every RC-5 owner knows the Reference Manual and the page where the commands bindable to a CC message are listed therein. The ranges for TRACK REVERSE have been determined programmatically. For sure, it's faster and less error-prone than a manual trial/error method. Nevertheless, this is still nothing but guesswork and it has to be done for the other forty-or-so commands!
      To make things worse, there are less trivial cases than TRACK REVERSE. If you want to change the kit on the fly, yeah it's possible with a CC message, but the KIT command has seven ranges of values and BOSS tells nothing about these...
      Some commands like MEMORY INC or TRK CLEAR, rather than value-triggered, are edge-triggered and require two or more CC messages. Again, BOSS doesn't explain this.
      My point here is that people who consider acquiring a programmable device like the MC8, or ANY other midi control surface, should be aware that some guesswork will still be necessary because BOSS fails to explain completely how to use the CC commands. So much for a "Reference" manual :/
      I've been searching the BOSS Knowledge Base high and low, and for the time being there's no document providing more complete information.
      End of rant :D

    Thanks JP! This is great, so easy to understand when you explain it. Would love to see you use the MC8 with the headrush looperboard! Specifically whether it can send multiple CC or note messages from a single MC8 button (and whether the headrush can receive these simultaneously!) That would mean from the headrush CC list you could mix and match as you see fit. E.g one button on the MC8 could send the CC message for "Start track 1" and the CC message for "Start track 2" on one button on the MC8, if you didn't want to use the "All start/All stop button". Sorry for the long comment! 😂

    Thank you for your informative video. I appreciate your easy to follow instructions (I am a beginner to loopers).
    Is it possible to use CC commands to mimic the controls of the footpedal on the RC5? These commands appear to be included on page 15 of the manual, but I have read that (in one person’s experience) it was not possible to recreate the basic footpedal controls using a midi controller. Is it as simple as assigning a CC number to the correct parameters listed on page 15 of the manual?
    I noticed that in the video you used the footpedal on the RC5 to start recording a loop. Was this because it is not possible to assign this function to an external midi controller?
    I apologize if these are overly simple questions. I am new to midi programming and loopers.

    I still can't make TRK PLAY and TRK STOP working. My MIDI connections are working and TRK PLY/STP does actually work, but i need the two dedicated functions. Boss support told me to update the firmware (which i did) but nothing changed. Does anyone have TRK PLAY and/or TRK STOP working? I still think those function simply don't work in general ...

    • @31plemoine
      @31plemoine Před 3 lety +3

      With midi, the "TRK PLY/STP" is edge-triggered. You have to send two CC messages, the first with value 0 and the second with value127. Think of this pair of messages as a single "event". Assuming you're in the stop state, here is how it works:
      If the current memory slot contains a loop already:
      1st event -> play
      2nd event -> stop
      3rd event -> play
      4th event -> stop ... etc...
      If the current memory slot is empty:
      1st event -> record
      2nd event -> play
      3rd event -> stop
      4th event -> play ... etc...
      This sequential logic is built in and can't be broken. Most people would see it as a pro rather than a con: only one switch is used for control, and only one CC channel is used.
      Now, you want dedicated TRK PLAY and TRK STOP controls. The closest to what you want would be to bind your RC-5 footswitch to "TRK STOP" or to "TRK STP(CLR". Then use it as a control for STOP and use midi as a control for START.
      Bear in mind that this solution is flawed: if the START control was truly dedicated, hitting it would have no effect when the loop is already playing, but here it actually duplicates the effect of the STOP control and stops the loop! Because of "TRK PLY/STP" built-in logic.

    • @coopscoops9327
      @coopscoops9327 Před rokem +1

      I realise this is an old post and that you've probably worked this out by now but just in case its helps; the midi control functions listed in reference manual for TRK START (Control "START" of memory/LOOP) and TRK STOP (Control STOP of memory/LOOP) are for changing the mode of the operation of START and STOP functions and not the actual loop START and STOP action itself. See page 9 of reference manual for the mode options . For example for TRK STOP, depending on the value you send, you can change the STOP mode function to either, Immediate stop, fade to fade time set, or stop at end of loop, but it doesn't STOP the loop, and, according to BOSS it was never supposed to do this. Similarly for TRK START, modes are immediate start, fade in.
      If you want separate functions for TRK PLY/STP and STOP you can plug a footswitch like FS-7 directly into the RC-5 which is what I do. This is not quite what you wanted but close. I use a midi footswitch to increment and decrement memory.
      In this example for TRK STOP, it is 0-31 (0-1F hex) for immediate stop, 32-95 (20 -5F hex), for fade to fade time, and 96-127 (60-7F hex) for stop at end of loop. A friendly chap at Roland was trying to find a list of the various values required for all the midi functions, but heard nothing back yet.

    Is there any way to make RC-5 ignore beats/measures, so it does not quantize the loop? Sometimes when we have a sponteanus moment (worship music) we do not have any sort of beat going on and I would like to just freeze some part to loop it for long, but it keeps pushing it into the frame of measures within current tempo...

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 2 měsíci

      Hey 👋
      So yes and no. I know.. an annoying answer 🙄
      But let me explain. The RC-5 will ALWAYS attempt to figure out a BPM based on the timing of the recording.
      However, it is possible for it to ignore measures in the sense of using a rhythm track.
      You would have to turn off certain elements within that loop like the rhythm start and stop elements so it doesn’t send out a rhythm or a click track.
      Might be worth doing that on a separate memory and saving it like that, then you can just go up to that memory with an FS6 or FS7 pedal and it’s there as an empty track with no rhythm section playing for you to create a drone or freeze. Then you could go down a memory back to the previous loop when you are ready (provided that loop is saved)
      Is that what you want to achieve?
      Hope that makes sense?
      Let me know if I’m making any sense. 🤣

    Play/Stop and Clear track are covered in the RC-5 reference guide, but how to RECORD another layer using MIDI? Or do you need to press the actual RC-5 pedal for that, or external footswitch?

    • @31plemoine
      @31plemoine Před 3 lety +2

      You're talking about overdubbing, right? Then stay away from MIDI control for this. You have 3 options:
      1) Just use the RC-5 builtin switch and choose the binding that fits you, from the set TRK REC/PLY, TRK R/P/S(C), etc...
      If you're not happy with the feel under your foot, or you don't like double-tap and hold, or you can't reach the level of control you want:
      2) Buy a two-switch foot controller from BOSS, to be plugged into the Stop / Memory Shift input. This will bring some more comfort in your control of record/play/overdub. Basically you'll get the same level of comfort as with the RC-500, AFAICT.
      3) Do what I've done, build a two-switch foot controller yourself. It's very easy, I have a fully functional DIY foot controller for under 20 euros. It's made of wood and fully passive. You don't need a metal enclosure because the control signals are not audio, they don't need shielding. A wooden enclosure looks unprofessional but it's cheap and robust enough. It's been easy to craft, to the exact dimensions I'd planned.

    • @31plemoine
      @31plemoine Před 3 lety +1

      You CANNOT record another layer (overdubbing) with midi. You can bind the command "TRK PLY/STP" but this will only let you record, provided that the memory slot you're using is empty. Subsequent actions will be stop, play, stop, play, etc... on this recorded loop. It's not what you want.
      This is the reason why I'd advised about getting a two-switch foot controller in my previous comment. BTW, it's a bad idea to edit a YT comment, it's confusing and makes it harder for people who try to help you :/

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 3 lety

      31plemoine is correct.
      You could also use TRK R/P/S or TRK R/P/S/C on a CTL 1 or 2 but the main pedal is set to TRK R/P/S/C as standard anyway.
      Overdubbing is done with this and you either need to press the actual RC-5 or you can set that up on an external foot switch.
      You can control the ‘dub mode’ via midi but all that does is change the preference from overbidding to replacing the audio with a new recording.

    I’ve had my RC-5 since Nov 2020 & am using it with a Morningstar MC-6 (always with the latest firmware) & Boss’ own MIDI-TRS cable which I only purchased to eliminate the cable in my troubleshooting process (it wasn't the cable).
    I could only get MIDI control of the RC-5 to work correctly by sending out the CC# with value 127 followed by a 2nd message with the same CC# but value 0. (Both messages sent on the press action)
    Sending out the CC# only once with value 127 resulted in weird behaviour on the RC-5.
    I sent a video to Boss UK support to demonstrate the issue and they weren’t able to help so they forwarded onto their wider team and I’ve still not had a reply 2 months on.
    In setting up your Morningstar MC-8, you must have looked at the value parameter of the MIDI message and made a decision regarding what to do with it - either leave it alone or change it?
    I found that this step was the critical step and was the difference between getting MIDI to work correctly or thinking my RC-5 unit was faulty.
    If you can successfully control your RC-5 from a Morningstar MC-8 with just 1 message, with no special consideration of the value sent with the CC#, then it would make me start to think that my issue is due to my Morningstar MC-6 rather than the RC-5.
    While I now have my RC-5 & MC-6 working flawlessly together (and I can’t recommend this combination highly enough - it’s great fun & massively expands the functionality of the RC-5) it’d still be really helpful to know what full message(s) you’re sending from your MC-8 i.e. both CC# & value?
    The message you set up might only apply to the MC-8, but it’d still be incredibly useful to know the full message you’re sending and might assist others when setting up their MIDI controller or troubleshooting issues they may be having.

      Hey Chris. 👋
      So this is a very important comment and I thank you for raising it.
      I did actually film this and decided to take it out as I didn’t want to alienate people who don’t have a Morningstar pedal.
      Basically I setup the Morningstar with 2 commands per CC#. On trigger at 127 and then on release same number but at 0. This makes the pedal turn on and off instantly otherwise the next time you press it, the looper won’t know the difference.
      I thank you for the comment and it is something with midi you have to learn but this video was about all midi in general and my only regret is that I didn’t talk about values and should have left in the information that 0 is off and 127 is on.
      With the RC-500 it’s even more complex cause you dictate what the Cc# is as well.. so that can lead to even more confusion.
      With the values, a lot of midi floor pedals send this message automatically, that 127 is ON when it’s pressed and 0 is OFF when it releases.. so it’s more about programming the MorningStar up as it is such a blank canvas.
      But I take your feedback seriously and it’s something I am going to make sure is in the Morningstar video when it comes out soon. 🙏

      @@zapata.music1989 I don't know who rebranded what, but the "MIDI Commander" from MeloAudio and the "MP-100" from Harley Benton are the very same device. I don't own any of these, but by examining the manual all the issues you describe make sense.
      As far as I can tell, the device can send one CC message at a time for a given button press. This is perfectly fine with a few commands like e.g. "KIT", for which a single value will have an effect on the RC-5. However, many interesting midi-bindable commands need two CC messages for a single button press, e.g. "TRK PLY/STP", "TRK UND/RED", "RHYTHM P/S", "TAP TEMPO" ...
      If the command needs an OFF value followed by an ON value, and the midi controller only sends an ON value (toggle mode is off) then the very first button press has an effect but subsequent ones do not, because the RC-5 doesn't receive the necessary OFF values. When the toggle mode is on, then you have the guarantee to send ON and OFF values, but you need a button press for each alternately! Basically, what should be a single-tap action is turned into a double-tap action :(
      I'm afraid this device, although programmable, is not versatile enough :/
      To the best of my understanding, ofc.
      In comparison, check out JohnPaul's video about the MorningStar MC8 and the thorough use of the editor: up to 16 messages can be a assigned to each button!
      To address your doubts, the RC-5 is not to be blamed here, but rather the meloaudio/mp100.

      You just have to remember one major thing. RC5#1 is setting the tempo and controlling #2 so if you start a loop on #2 it will be out of sync with #1.
