Building your back can have numerous benefits - both in terms of aesthetics and in overall health.
Let's look at some of them.
Aesthetic Benefits:
Improved Posture: Strengthening your back muscles can significantly enhance your posture. Well-developed back muscles help align your spine properly, preventing slouching or rounding of the shoulders, which in turn gives the appearance of confidence and poise.
V-Taper Look: Developing your back muscles creates the illusion of a narrower waist and broader shoulders, resulting in the coveted V-taper physique. A well-defined back enhances your overall silhouette, making you appear more muscular and attractive.
Defined Back Musculature: Building back muscles adds definition and detail to your physique. A sculpted back with visible muscle striations not only looks impressive but also demonstrates dedication to fitness and strength training.
Balanced Physique: Aesthetically pleasing proportions involve not only building the muscles in the front of the body but also those in the back. A balanced physique with well-developed back muscles complements a strong chest, shoulders, and arms, creating a harmonious overall appearance.
Health Benefits:
Prevention of Injury: Strong back muscles provide stability to the spine and support proper body mechanics during daily activities and exercise. This reduces the risk of injuries, such as strains and sprains, particularly in the lower back, which is prone to issues due to poor posture and sedentary lifestyles.
Improved Functional Strength: Building back muscles enhances functional strength, making it easier to perform everyday tasks such as lifting, carrying, and bending. A strong back not only increases your ability to handle physical demands but also reduces the likelihood of experiencing back pain or discomfort.
Alleviation of Back Pain: Strengthening the muscles surrounding the spine can alleviate chronic back pain by providing better support and stability. Engaging in targeted back exercises can help alleviate discomfort associated with conditions like sciatica, herniated discs, or muscle imbalances.
Enhanced Athletic Performance: A strong back is essential for athletes across various disciplines. Whether you're a runner, a swimmer, or a weightlifter, a well-developed back improves performance by facilitating efficient movement, power generation, and injury prevention.
Today's workout:
1. T-bar row
2. Pause rep pull down
3. Single arm Smith row
4. Wide pushdown
5. Incline bench lateral raise
Tips for Building Back Muscles:
Compound Exercises: Incorporate compound exercises such as deadlifts, pull-ups, rows, and lat pulldowns into your workout routine to target multiple muscle groups in the back effectively.
Progressive Overload: Gradually increase the intensity, weight, or volume of your workouts over time to continually challenge your back muscles and stimulate growth.
Proper Form: Focus on maintaining proper form during exercises to maximize muscle engagement and minimize the risk of injury. Consult a fitness professional if you're unsure about your technique.
Rest and Recovery: Allow adequate rest and recovery between workouts to give your muscles time to repair and grow stronger. Aim for at least 48 hours of rest before targeting the same muscle group again.

Erin never misses a back day, or a glute day. Now that I think about it, I don't think she misses any (insert muscle group) day. She might be an alien.
Haha thanks?☺️ it helps that it’s part of the job!
@@ErinSternFIT It is nice to find a way to make a living doing what you love.
@@ErinSternFITthat means youre out of this world with your strength, determination and dedication!❤
Thank you! Erin you speak so clearly that people living in non English speaking countries are able to understand you without subtitles!!!❤
Amazed how you keep world class shape. Ultra flat stomach, V shape, ultra-defined hams, back, beautiful traps, etc, etc....Loved your tips about dominant side training, mind muscle connection and how to "think" the performance of pulling movements. As always, a wonderful video. Worth watching the full 756 seconds. You are inspiring!! 💪
Thank you for the kind words. Thanks for watching, sharing and subscribing! 😊💪
Hi, it's Bill. LOL Thanks for your videos. I'm still relatively new to working out and certainly not a body builder, but your videos have really helped me in the gym. In particular, I appreciate how you explain not only what to do but *describing the feeling to expect* to know I'm doing it right, in this video as well as others. Thank you for the positivity, practicality and friendly presentation, while so many channels are based on shaming about form and knowledge.
No matter how many of Erin's videos I watch, I always discover at least one exercise I've never seen before. Thanks, Erin!
I’ve looked at a lot of training videos but find that Erin has the very best of training session and instruction. Her instruction is thorough in every movement and precise, and very effective over the years for me. In addition, she is kind and gentle in her approach not like military barkers. Thanks, Erin
❤
I’m in Texas now. I used to live in Florida near Tampa.
I’m preparing to start training to hopefully compete this year.
I’ve already consulted with a IFBB pro trainer snd will be meeting her in the next few weeks l.
In 42 now and have wanted to do this since I was 30!
When I lived in Tampa I heard your name a lot.
Thank you for all your inspiration ❤
Your videos are extremely helpful. I love that you give tips and adjustments while doing the exercise.

🦸♀️😊
Thanks!
Thank you, Jodi! 💖 I appreciate you!
I have done the smith row but never bent over, gonna try that on my next back day! Thanks!!!! yes that mind muscle connection is where it is really at. having said that, I can immediately connect with my glutes or quads or calves but boy oh boy, when it comes to the back, it seems like I am connecting with all of them at once (with the exception of the lower lats, then I feel distinctly and separately,) sometimes when I think I am working the rear delts my tri ceps end up being sore. I think my form is good, I think about pulling or leading with the elbows. so I guess it just means I need to strengthen my triceps. if you know of anyone struggling with addiction issues, please refer them to my site. Thanks, Bob

Hi TheBulletzgottishow20! How are you doing? All good here! Thank you ☺️
@@ErinSternFIT I’m great love
love this
Thanks!
Any tips, for when you have the chest pressed against the incline bench? It is a bit uncomfortable for me in the chest area
I don't like double-D ring handles for landmine rows. I prefer a GymPin Holeybar (some prefer lat saw type device, same idea) with exercise handles attached. The bar gives wider grip and the handles give total wrist flexibility, which helps me get my shoulder blades really pinched together at the top. That's where it's at for me.
Thanks for sharing and watching. Keep training smart and training hard 💪
real wonder women🔥🔥
thank you 😊💪
Wonderful. Oh I like your shoes. What brand are they?
Thank you once again.Really great tips !
discovered t-bar row last week - gamechanger!

thank you 💪😊
Hi Erin, I'm 60 years old and started working out this year. I have a shoulder impingement from a previous injury from years ago, and it hurts whenever I do exercises like lateral raises. Do you have any suggestions on how I can do them without discomfort? I do see a PT and a Chiro, and it helps. But I'd really like to work on building my back strength. I do plan to incorporate your previous exercises, too.
Shark tooth and Nautilus? Love it...Great video Erin as always!
Thank you!
I love Erin! Is there a transformation workout plan that you offer? ❤
Erin on the wide grip lat push downs-When you say you like to take a staggered stance, does that mean that you alternate sets putting 1 foot slightly in front of the other? From the video it looks like your feet are parallel, so I’m not sure what you mean
Thank you!! Your videos are amazing teaching!!!
Thanks, Beth! Ahh, we usually record them and then I do the voiceovers at a later date. If my feet are even, then they stay that way throughout. I really like the staggered stance, and that’s what I normally do. I will switch legs each set, if I do them that way. Hope that helps and sorry for the confusion!
Fabuloso Miss Erin ❤
thank you! 💪😊
Hello Erin, Thank you for your great videos. Could you please introduce a workout for opening the curve/arch of lower back (Lordosis ) . The people who used to be fat have too of this, even though they become thinner. I'd appreciate it if you put/introduce a video to normalize this extra lower back curve.
I have this naturally but am always lean. I have to be conscious of my posture always. Have sciatica at mo from not been conscious of it whne doing some cable work recently 😮😢
Erin, you should be on the next Wonder Woman sequel 😊🎉
Love this 🎉🎉
thank you! Thanks for watching 💖💪
Cool ❤
😊
Good morning Erin.. I'm working a bit with abb wheel and using steady breathing at same time. Can this give any benefits toward back strength too. I've noticed it really works under my upper underarms.
Yes, absolutely
💪thank you your the best. Because of you I'm healthier and stronger then I've ever been. 🥰
Thank you. Anything for fupas please? I feel like I burn everywhere but that area - so painfully annoying 😭
We can't spot reduce a specific area but we can built strength in that area and focus on getting leaner. Do you have my free Foundation to FIT workouts? That will help you get started.
Hello Erin, would a slow pause rep pull up be as effective as the cable row? Cheers.
I love women without the muscles just the natural god given way they are
Hey Erin from Sweden .
I’m 59 yo and I noticed that my back , on the lover part is like skin or something.
I do train hard at gym but still got that on my back and that’s annoying.
Is it fat , loose skin ?
Can I get rid of that ?
Erin ❤❤❤❤❤ ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
💖💪😊 Thanks for watching!
Erin would love to train with you
Sponge bob ! lol girly nvr 😂
🧽😊💪
Happy Wednesday
Happy Wednesday to you, too!
@@ErinSternFIT Thank you
I wish my gym at a row bar
At times we have to use what we've got 💪 I hope you can implement the others or use an alternative.
You have the a wonderful, beautiful and STRONG back. ❤🤝🖤
thank you 💪😊
SpongeBob, That’s me.😂 and since you asked, do you have any workouts geared towards gluteal growth using ankle weights?
Not specifically using ankle weights. You could do the glute workouts that are on the channel and implement your ankle weights. I usually use the cable machine with an ankle attachment. If you want a complete glutes workout program, you might consider my Glute Gains 90-Day program (gym & home options included) fit.erinstern.com/glute-gains?coupon=CZcamsSUBSCRIBER
gorgeous all Woman.

Build back better 😂
😊
Yea, I have one of those bodies that’s straight up and down. Every time I bend down, my pants slide down my butt.
😊 we can fix that. Here are a few workouts... www.youtube.com/@erinstern5/search?query=glutes%20workouts

I hate that all of the smith machines at my gym (and other gyms I've checked out for that matter) are slanted. Ugggghh!
It can make exercise planning challenging! Many exercises can still be done on a slanted smith machine, but it does limit options.
I really wanna see you in normal wear... Formals or casuals but not in gym dress...
why? Gym life everyday 😊💪
Thanks!
Thank you so much, Jodi! I appreciate you! 💖😊
I appreciate you and all your awesome videos that I use all the time. :)
