  • Hi! In this video, I talk about my injury - how it happened, how I’m adjusting, plans moving forward, and other topics. I do have two training videos that were recorded before the injury, and those will be out soon.
I plan to record some upper body workouts, cooking/meal prep, and some talking videos. If there’s something specific you’d like to see, please let me know!
Injuries happen to all of us at some point. If there’s a lesson learned or if we’re able to see the opportunities within it, it will be an overall gain. #womensfitness #womenshealth #fitfam #womenempowerment

This is not a simple subject Erin. The mental part is very difficult. I've broken both legs 11 years ago. Went through 10 surgeries and had an amazing dr from Dallas. The surgeries took a lot of me. The aftermath with all the scars have taken a huge toll. I'm not going to bore you and your followers. Best advice, take your time with physical therapy. Your body will eventually heal. Maybe and I stress maybe. Maybe you will be 100 % after it's all said and done. I couldn't get to 100 % myself but you learn to live with it! If you're religious prayer might work. I will follow your amazing wisdom no matter what ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Oh, bless your heart, I am so sorry to hear about your injury! I myself am recovering from a nasty concussion. The main thing I've learned from this 'setback' is that "You have more than you know," and now, it's time to rely and put to good use the 'mindset' you've used to get this far. I will pray for your renewed good health. To me, these troubles are a "wake-up" call and time for introspection and making new decisions about where you are going in life. Amen sister, Godspeed

Wow Erin. I’ve been there with my shoulder and arm tendon issues. You are adding to what I’ve learned. I dropped my strong side down to tone weights instead of grow weights. So when I got better from my injuries I wasn’t way ahead or A symmetrical as you said. I’m looking forward to the food info. I’m really proud of your confidence ideas. David took out the big guy with a little stone. Stand strong and keep faith. I’ve injured everything in my body at least once. I spent 4 years in a chair trying to heal from injuries that were mistreated by a surgeon. I finally found a good ortho . I got back on my weak legs 9 years ago. I picked up lifting again at 59. I’m now 67 . I’ve had surgery on both shoulders . Set backs for weight lifting. Dropped clear back to 5 lbs weights and started over . Now it’s low weights high reps. Worked my way back. You’ll get there. Anything I can do to help message me. Go girl . Good plan.

I injured myself last December (cervical herniated discs, which triggered degenerative neck issues). I am still not training my upper body, but I have finally accepted it. I was in denial for a few months, and then the whole mourning period of having to change my yearly goals, and come to terms with the fact I might never get back to aerial dancing. These days I am much more positive, and focusing on other dreams.
This video is awesome. I think it will really help others who may get injured. I feel like there is not enough out there regarding mental health in relation to injuries and sports/dream disruptions. Thank you for sharing your story. Can't wait to see what you decide to share.

My right Achilles is damaged. It's not as long as it should be so tough to stretch like left side. Mini indoor trampoline killed it. I chose not to do surgery. My brother in laws snapped. It's taken him a year to get back to trusting it. I have discussed with Dr. on how to protect it as best I can. It could snap as it's not fully attached in one small area. It's small enough that it can and has healed itself but with drawbacks. No jumping. No long walks. Daily stretches.
I do cardio by using rest of body to get heart rate up. Fast weight sets ,low wgt. Squats don't bother it so lucky I can do those too. Lots of ab work too. Praying for your healing! You are a blessing to so many. You got this❤❤❤❤

After my injury falling backwards down 15 stairs with a dresser on me, broken left tibea and all bones fractured in my back, I recovered. I'm older and not as strong as you. You are my hero and a hero and an inspiration to sooooo many.. You'll heal for yourself and all of us do depend on you. You are beautiful kind honest and just a very awesome human being. You are loved. After my injury maybe I'm not a body builder but I've never took advantage of just simply being able to walk. When I get lazy to don't eat properly I'll get bone pain. This accident happened to me around 5 years ago. I love the idea that your doing different things to keep yourself motivated. For myself almost every night I continue my leg exercises. I'm so satisfied just being able to do that. And reading, I have not stopped since my injury. I'm in the 100s right now with my books. Very gratifying.Gid bless and remember we need you❤🎉

    Your amazing Erin!
First, I'm so sorry that this happened to you. But thank you for creating and sharing this video, 🙏 .
You are so very correct that there is so much that goes into injures both mentally and physically, beyond what most talk about.
I had both my hips reconstructed last year, November/December 2023. And found myself in the middle of an identity crisis, having to accept that I couldn't compete in bodybuilding, teach group fitness, move the way I want to, and/or do the things that brought me happiness.
It was so very hard to accept that I had to start over, yet again.
It was hard to have that disconnect between my mind and my body. I wanted to get back to the level I was at prior to my injuries so badly.
Thank you for discussing these things and helping people learn to navigate these periods. Your growth mindset of controlling what you can, keeping positive, and doing your best, well that's what makes you a true champion.
I will be saying some prayers for your surgery and continued healing. Be patient with yourself, rest, and heal. And I hope that soon this experience will be behind you!

@ErinSternFIT I am well. I just have been cleared to go back to the normal routine about 1 month ago. Have my range of motion back, and slowly... very slowly, lol, I am getting stronger. Back to more stability/mobility type of training, but my strength dropped significantly. Took me a while to work through those feelings, but I am happy to say that I am pain-free and working my way back incrementally. New doors that have opened for me would be that i have had time to focus on my voice and singing, that was my original passion and career, before getting into fitness. Thank you for asking. You're such a kind and beautiful soul.

Your words of wisdom come at the perfect time. Lots of us struggle with physical injuries and also mental ones. "No resting in the middle. You rest at the end" is a wonderful way to sum up things. I had an Achilles injury 3 weeks before I was trailing to make the Olympic rowing team. Talk about crying! That crew went on to win a gold 4 yrs later. Me? I was expecting my second child that year. I am a firm believer that things do happen for a reason. Resting and recovery times are important and if ignored, well, things happen. To hear of your plans to pick up the fiddle, your bow, better your Spanish...fantastic things to work on! So great to hear of your other interests. Speaks volumes as to how well rounded of an athlete/ individual you really are. Not that there was any doubt 😂. Looking forward to hearing/ watching your upcoming videos. Heal well ❤🙏

Erin thank you so much for sharing your journey, through past pain and current injury. As a clin psych I second all of your sagely advice. I have torn a back ligament, had a level 3 sprained ankle and..cancer
At 64 now I have learned at last to not push through the warning signs and the pain, to pull back and train a little differently if just as hard. I have also learned that an iron will tempered by wisdom becomes a strength and not an obstacle. You will be better and stronger on the other side. You contribute so much to women’s journeys to become strong in body and mind, without competing on the stage. Yes reflect, regroup and rediscover. Archery and the fiddle are cool btw 😊💕

I knew I should work upper but I couldn't bring myself to do it. So I lost a lot of muscle. And I gained weight. This week I actually decided enough was enough and have been working on upping my protein back to where it should be and for now getting some cardio in just to see what my knee can handle. I'll miss not doing squats anymore but I have seen your videos where you were providing alternatives. That has actually strengthened my belief that I don't need squats and especially with everything else you have taught me since the first oxy challenge. You got this, coach ❤

Wishing you all the best on your recovery road ahead. This past April was my 1 year anniversary following my surgery for Achilles rupture so I understand how devastating this can be. Being an avid squash player, it was hard knowing I wouldn't be able to play for a long while. I really had to change my mindset to not focus on what I couldn't do, but to focus on every new thing I could do as I progressed in my recovery. Setting realistic expectations and celebrating each improvement as a win really helped me to stay motivated and was as important as sticking to doing proper sports focused rehab. If I can share one thing from my recovery journey, it is that the recovery progress is not linear. The first 8 weeks you'll see noticeable week over week improvements as you work up to removing the boot, but once the boot comes off, those week by week improvements will not be obvious and it is easy to get discouraged thinking you are not improving. During that period, improvements week over week may be miniscule, only in the form of feeling you can do a movement (e.g. assisted single leg calf raise) slightly more easily than previous week. But if you stick your rehab exercises, and track your progress as an overall directional trend, you will come to a point where you will all of a sudden see massive improvements again. It's been more than 6 months now that I'm back in the gym and playing squash again back to my previous level and I'm so grateful for the things I learned about myself through this recovery road. I know you will come back stronger as well!

Beautiful advice Erin! I can empathize, in that just before reaching my fitness goal I broke my patella. I didn't have health care at the time, so my recovery was long and hard. My leg was emaciated and I didn't walk right for years. I got back on the horse and started training again to the best of my ability. I learned to strengthen not only my body but also my mind. I don't think I would be as mentally strong today had that not happened. Wishing you a speedy recovery 🙏 ❤️ All the best!!

Thank you so much for sharing the major change that we all go through at one time or another physically and as we start to age. At 60 years of age I fell off an electric scooter and had my first major physical injury. It took 6 months for me to walk more comfortably and not feel as much pain in my left knee. I had to start thinking about ways to protect my body and my mind as I was getting older. I joined a gym a year ago and followed your videos. I take supplements but have learned a few more things from you. You said aging is a privilege it made me feel better. There are things I cannot do and managing my weight is a whole new ball of wax as I used to be super thin. I think you're going to attract a whole new audience, people like me who are now 65. I would love to see some senior exercises to help people ramp up their metabolism and stay flexible. God bless❤❤❤

Erin I believe everything happens for a reason no matter how painful mentally & physically.
You will come back stronger & this may even prompt you to get out of that comfort zone which we are all guilty of especially when you have your goals & have a physique like yours.
    Much love ❤

Oh my God!! Please accept all my courage and solidarity, Erin!! You will return to training normally, you will see. I remember Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, but long before them, Dominique Wilkins, all of them basketball players, they came back from a terrible Achilles tendon injury like the one you now unfortunately have, and you have as much or more courage than them. All my support, love and respect. We will be watching your videos to support you. Get well soon. Please accept a huge hug!!

Thanks for the update, Erin and so sorry to hear of your injury. I’ve ruptured both Achilles’ tendons, about 12 years apart, playing volleyball both times. Yes, it took a long time to heal and to rehab following surgery but I was determined to return to sport. You are an elite athlete so hard work will be right up your alley! You’ve got this and thanks for your inspiring words!

Oh Erin I’m so sorry! You are and continue to be an inspiration, and as a cancer survivor I empathize so much with the unexpected and devastating mental and emotional impact of physical challenges. All I can say is your greatest asset in the road to recovery is your amazing mindset, which got you to Olympia twice! You have the most impressive mind body connection ever and I know you will heal beautifully and recover your strength. Thank you for sharing your journey and you’ve got this!! Also P.S. Pho is super high in collagen and nourishing broth! Swap out the rice noodles for kelp noodles to boost the nutrition and reduce the carbs! 😉

I’m so sorry, Erin, that this happened. My residency was in orthopedic post-op and I’m not gonna lie, there will be pain and it will take time. But, wanting to heal and wanting to get better is the mindset you need to have and you have it. Keep as active as you’re allowed (tendons, ligaments, cartilage don’t have as much blood flow as other tissues in the body hence they take longer to heal). It sounds like you are on the right track. There may be days you feel discouraged or down; that’s normal. I’m wishing you a complete recovery ❤️‍🩹

I hope you make a full recovery, it is not easy. I am not a competative athlete and I ruptured my achillies when I was mid 50s. The injury healed well and caused me no significant problems, it did take a few months though. Good luck Erin, and thank you.

You are very lucky you were able to get surgery so quickly. I have failth in your recovery. Many years ago I had a career ending knee injury and I was told I would never do lots of things again, and I low and behold, I do most of them now but with a full knee reconstruction. Be kind to yourself, you will make a full recovery, let it take as long as it does.

Hi Erin, I know exactly how rough it is to get an injury on the lower body. For me, it came before I had even started bodybuilding, but the first set of physiotherapy exercises I had programmed was the start of my entire body recomp and now my passion for bodybuilding. I am 60% recovered from my knee injury now after 22 months in physical therapy. I have gotten hugely philosophical about what I CAN do even with this limitation and for me it’s been huge because realising my injury came from a weak lower half was hugely eye-opening and forced a total change in my way of life and even led me to your amazing videos.
I know you can get through this. It sounds like one hell of a nasty injury but you are one tough cookie and I admire your fighting and positive spirit. Stay strong, focus on the future and you’ll emerge from this even wiser and tougher! Love xx
P.S. I've always loved the saying, "Never waste a crisis" and I feel like injuries are a case in point.
