Wrexham's Most Amazing Feeling

  • This is the story of an amazing feeling thousands of people had yesterday--a feeling that, ultimately, they gave each other. It's a football story about a fellow named Ryan Reynolds, a football club, and a recently unretired goalkeeper who will never buy a drink in Wrexham again.
In which John cannot be particularly excited about his own football club, so he decides to be excited about other people's joy.

One time when I was in choir the instructor said something like, "The music only exists so long as you're singing, it only exists because we're together right now. Once you stop it's gone." Thinking about that with this video, because the memories matter, they live on, but only because we're together

Reminds me of something my college theatre director said to us on opening night of one show. "What we're about to do does not exist yet, and after tonight, it will never exist again." Each moment is different no matter how much rehearsal, or practice, no matter how many games, or performances.

This video made me understand why people refer to sports teams as “we.”

    • @RichardGadsden
      @RichardGadsden Před rokem +1

That last letter of AFC stands for "club". We, the fans, are the club. In some sports, in some countries, for some teams, that is literal - we are members and the membership collectively owns the organisation. But even when it's not literally, legally, true, it's metaphorically, emotionally true. Also, the team, the sport, it wouldn't exist without us.
So yes, there is a real sense in which we are the club. The players on the field are merely our representatives, our avatars. The owners are stewards of the club. They own it as a trust for the fans - even if that isn't true in law, it certainly is the way the relationship is supposed to work.

This makes every game a joy to watch because for every dubious call by the officials there’s a nail-biting leap-over-the-opposing-team-to-get-into-place-before-the-whistle-blows moment that the opposing team then wrecks by having an extra man on the field. Always a good game, when you never know where the chaos generator will strike next.

As a school counselor, I practice this with all my pre-K - 12 students. We call it savoring. Living in and remembering the moments that bring us unbridled positive emotion. Remember and relish in the senses felt, the emotions shared, the temperature, the sounds, the time of day. Recall it all in a moment when you are struggling. Savor the joy and happiness, both presently in the moment it's occurring, and as a recollection of before, so that you can savor what is to come as well.

They had all their qualifier rounds and were top seated for alliance selection. They climb their way up the bracket till the finals. Tied after 2 rounds. In the final round, the underdog alliance wins, and everyone cheers because they beat the top 2 ranked teams. I am a 50 year old lifelong anti-sports-fan; like whoever first emerged from the primordial soup and said 'sports good!' was followed immediately by my distant forebear who said 'meeehhh' and our peoples have forged two paths through the world that shall ever be separate. But a few months ago a friend finally got me to watch the Welcome to Wrexham documentary and I started to sort of get it, that communal sense of heart that makes a fandom's shared joy and despair even over something as frivolous as balls going over lines somehow deeper and more true than what an individual might feel alone. That friend convinced me to watch a Wrexham game - just to see if I enjoyed it or even cared at all about it - and it turns out I sort of did which was a weird thing to discover at the age of 50. That first game was in early March and I've been following Wrexham ever since only to have delivered into my lap on Monday the most tense, literally nail-biting sports experience of my life. When Ben Foster made that save at the end I jumped out of my seat whooping and hollering like all the people I had made fun of for so long for getting so worked up about something as dumb as sports. Sharing that moment of pure joy with fellow Wrexham fans in the stands and around the world was really something special and I'm happy to share it with you too, John.

I'm more of a baseball fan than anything, but I do like soccer (football) as well. I've said similar things to what John said, and for me the most important thing is this: it gives me something to *belong* to, even if I'm just watching it. Sometimes, people just need a way to decompress, to scream, to cry, to cheer about something, *anything.*
I remember going to Cincinnati with my dad for the United States vs. Mexico World Cup qualifier in November 2021. It was a cold night, with sleet and snow flurries on and off the whole match. It was an arch-rivalry game, and you don't need me to tell you the history between the two nations. And yet, twenty-two men stepped onto 110 yards of grass for just over ninety minutes, both aiming for the same objective. The United States won 2-0, and it put them in first place in qualifying standings at the time. It wasn't just a chance to cheer, it was a chance to bond with my dad, who came over to the U.S. from Europe. He wasn't looking to escape a bad situation, but to make a good one better. He taught me the love of the game. I'm not really a spiritual man, but there did seem to be an ethereal feeling in the stands that night. Maybe there's a reason why many sports arenas are considered a slice of Heaven.
I understand completely if you're not into sports. But for those that are, there is something you can't explain about it. I'd argue that there are times when the "just a game" argument isn't true. Sorry, I've gone on for too long; hopefully, this is the best argument I can make for it.

I'm not a big sports fan, but man, experiencing the Phillies' run to the World Series last year in Philadelphia every day was something special. The shriek of joy I let out at my local brewpub when Harper hit his "Bedlam at the Bank" home run was inhuman. But it was OK, cause everyone else there did the same. When total strangers can sing "Dancing on My Own" together in joy and celebration, that's a special moment for humanity

After my team was eliminated (the Jays - and let's not talk about that heartbreak), it was great to follow the Phillies story. Glad you got to experience that (like I did when we beat the Philllies in 93). There really isn't anything else like it.

After a lifetime of not getting the hype about or really understanding why people get so invested in sports, this march madness the college I am going to grad school at got a shot at the national championship after winning their last two games within the last fraction of a second after being behind for nearly entire second half. I watched them play and now I finally understand what you mean about enjoying sports! It is so so much about the people and the stories.

As a devoted Liverpool supporter since '77, I've been through the ups and lengthy downs with our team's tenure in the top flight (I'll forever remember Wimbledon's stopping our title winning chance).
This season's been a tad underwhelming, but I've been following the juggernaut path Wrexham has been taking with aplomb, and watching their eventual conquering of the National League was a pure joy to experience with them (albeit from this side of a pc monitor).
I hope they can make the transition back to the full tier proper and take further strides to bring their historic side the accolades they truly deserve.

John, I'm not a football fan, but I could listen to you describe paint drying and be happy. I've been a listener for over ten years and an avid reader of your and Hank's books. I had the wonderful chance to briefly meet you both during TFIOS tour, which is something I won't forget. I am grateful for the hundreds of hours of entertainment and laughter, as well as the many periods of grief, worry, and above all hope (the thing with feathers) that I've experienced alongside this community. You and your brother are doing incredible work around the world. It all started with an attempt to get closer to each other, and now you have brought so many people closer to each other as well. This is probably a pretty serious comment for a four minute video on football, but it was on my heart to get it out. Thanks for everything, guys.

I'm from Wrexham originally - I move away some time ago, but I watched the Wrexham game where they got promoted from a pub with a bunch of other 'Wrex-pats". It was just me and some friends and a bunch of guys we didn't know, who were from our villages a long time ago and now live over 200 miles away from home. I never really considered myself to be into football and I just didn't really "get it" (and I still don't understand it) - I didn't see how sport could create such emotion, but it's been weeks and I'm still brought to tears just thinking about it. The emotion, the passion, the joy, the despair, the fear, the absolute and utter heart-soaring wonder of WINNING - and I get it now.

My husband is a massive sports fan. Personally, I don't really care about sports at all. I have a t-shirt that says "I just hope both teams have fun," and I mean it. Watching this with my husband allowed me to understand exactly why this stoic person can be so overcome with emotion watching what is to me fundamentally a bunch of people running into each other and kicking/throwing/hitting things. Thank you.

I am not a sports fan, but I would argue that they are worth at least some of the money and attention we pay for them. If not for the fun and connection that they foster, but for the outlet they offer to the primal competitive spirit of humans. It is very possible that society could crumble without them.

Many years ago I realised that sport is just another form of storytelling. We create the narratives together, build the heroes and the villains, write ourselves in on the sidelines, and then manipulate various types of balls to see how the story will play out. It’s thrilling because the story is unfolding before our eyes, but it’s important because we collectively imagine and invest in that story.
