- The new C8 mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette made a huge impression in the automotive world when it arrived last year. So much so we even named it MotorWeek’s Drivers' Choice Best of the Year. But, of course, it was not the first Stingray. That car made an even bigger splash when it rolled out of Detroit in 1963. And our own Roger Mecca has had a chance to experience this legendary American muscle and find out why for nearly six decades it's still the biggest fish in the pond.

Hard to believe this car is almost 60 years old. Truly gorgeous.
Ya man...timeless
I've long called the 1963-'67 Chevrolet C2 Corvette one of the most beautiful American cars ever built, but the 1963 Split-Window coupe is the one that has earned a very special place in the hearts of Corvette enthusiasts, as Chevy only built it for 1 year.
For some reason I was thinking 67’ was the split window year
My favorite generation Corvette!!! Got a 67 Coupe in my garage.
Best looking Corvette in my opinion.❤️
Might be the prettiest car ever built. IMHO...
I love the C2 Corvette. One of my favorite body styles. A 327 and some open side pipes will make this car roar. Lovely sound it produces.
By far the most beautiful Corvette ever built, and my second favorite after the C5. One thing is nearly indisputable though, this car is the most beautiful vehicle ever built. The 57 Chevy is the only other car that even comes close.
Incredible job, Larry Shinoda!!!!!
Corvette= Awsome!!!
I am at such aww. This car is absolutely beautiful.
As far as an iconic American Classic. I recently purchased my first 1963 Vette convertible. Because it was in pretty bad shape, I opted to cover it with a tarp for the trip back home. I had 2 people that I met at a gas station that largely could recognize the silhouette under the tarp.
10x more beautiful than the Miura.
...maby not 10 times....but deffenetly more cool and beautyful....restauring one myself so i know
The fact that you stated that going near 100 in this would be too risky, is why people cry so much when their food order is slightly wrong. It's an impressive and beautiful car, shame that the people that drive them are scared because there's no abs.
If I lived where there were big stretches of straight empty roads(think rural Kansas or Texas) I'd take that beast up to 100mph every time it went out. Around where I live the interstates are too crowded, too many people, too many cops. The rural secondary roads around here aren't straight enough/have horrible sight lines/too many people again.
That's why I like pure stock drags. People race these kind of cars all out.
I would love a 1963 Z06 Big Tank
Wouldn't we all. I'd gladly take a Z06 big tank fuelie over an L88.
Magic, like this split window, happens when all of the stars align and reveal pure perfection!
That car is gorgeous ❤️
It was really nice to hear the perspective of the owner re the impact that the design had for the era. Beautiful car 👍🏿
Something about that Sebring Silver that these cars came with, it showed off the lines the best. I'd have picked that color with that same red interior as the feature car, if redline tires were option in 1963 I'd have those too with the knock off wheels.
Beautiful Vette. Those are my favorite year.
This car is still one of the most beautiful ever built, IMHO. Its style will never lose its appeal.
On the other hand, having driven a '63, I can attest to the fact that the split rear window is just awful when driving the car. I would benefit from a modern rearview camera that would substitute a view screen in place of the rearview mirror, not that an owner would do such a thing. They had the right idea with the one-piece rear window. I have watched several episodes of FantomWorks and see how beloved the split read window is. Dan has even developed a split rear window roof prosthesis (so to speak) that can convert a convertible into a coup! It looks pretty convincing, too.
Could of used at least a five second view of the engine compartment. But this is and always will be my golden car. I did own a Mustang (1989 5.0 LX hatchback) which was my silver car.
i like it i wishd id had corvette c2s 1961-1964
63-67 are c2s
I would need two of them.. One in all its factory original glory, and one to restomod.
If I was rich I would own a green 1965 c2 stingray. The c2 is my favorite generation of corvette.
Gorgeous!
What a beauty!
Its funny how THE best corvette was the one with the shorter production run....yeah you can arguee the 53 oruginal was shorter but the C1 was built from 53 to 63 on its various iterations
I am wondering if this car was a fuelie at one time. The valve covers say 360 hp which is what the fuelie put out. Highest carb output was 340
The C7 has a tapered rear deck also.
I like the 1962 Corvette the best. It has the most sumptuous shapes and curves.
The C2 is my second most favorite generation of the Corvette, after the C4.
My favorite
Maybe Bill Mitchell liked "the split" but Zora Arkus-Duntov did not.
I have often wondered how one of these would handle with modern tires. Or how a modern Corvette would handle with narrow, bias-ply whitewalls.
2023 All C2 Corvette Sting Rays Split-Window Should Have Rear View Mirror Camera Screen Like Land Rover Defender 110.
wow, drum brakes? my '66 hardtop/convertible had all wheel disc, and I thought that was standard
4 wheel discs were made standard in 65
I didn't know about owners having the fuel injection removed but I did know some had the split window removed in favour of one large one. Very sad. And didn't Chevrolet give all the astronauts Corvettes?
❤
Sting Ray-2 words
There's a metallic blue one by me. Very loud.
Joe should have done this segment
Joe?
@@TheOzthewiz joe from automoments. Check out his channel. I've seen him do a few motorweek segments. He doesn't get as much attention as I think he deserves for his editing and presentations
We love Joe! He was one of our segment editors and produced a few Muscle Car Memory segments over the years! Unfortunately Joe moved on from MotorWeek last year but he is still very active on his AutoMoments channel.
The C2 Hardtop is the Greatest Corvette Ever.
No track times? I feel cheated, lol.
I drove one for years and you can see fine out the back, that was a huge lie. It was jus a money game and nader was already becoming a problem and zora didnt really want it either
1st
I've always known I should love this car. It's in line with everything I love today, american, sports car, chevy, and big power but I've never liked this car. Reminds me of a jag and a knock off.
Those grandpa whitewall tires have got to go
Wrong they make the car look better
@@massimocasella4201 Negative they need the redline tires
Yawn.
Lol you're not a car guy
