Wherefore
I will never forget-in a particularly tender and heartbreaking moment in my life-we traveled to hear Elder Holland talk. In the car on the long drive I told my husband the secret words of my heart, words I felt and heard over and over again-“I feel broken. Shattered. Totally broken.” It was years ago. A poem in my writers heart had brought those words to the surface after a long string of gut wrenching experiences and losses. Elder Holland began to speak and then set his fall aside. He said he felt we (me) needed to hear someone else. And for the first time I heard him speak about these words. This man, a servant of God I had followed, loved, listen to and drove hours to hear said, “God loves broken things-a broken heart, and a contrite spirit.” The he went on to speak and said ALL the words of my heart. I couldn’t write his words fast enough. Later, he would give a similar talk in conference. But that-the spirit loved me enough to say-hang on for one more day. I know you’re burning in your trial by fire, but I am melting the gold into your heart and soul to make you what you’ve always meant to become.
I am so Grateful that the Holy Ghost is my Best Friend. I hear His voice daily and can always feel comforted when I cry out. Life has been hard in so many ways, but I am not alone, ever, as He is with me and will be with YOU too. Just ask, He will answer your cries. I stand all amazed that a MEMBER OF THE GODHEAD IS MY BEST FRIEND AND CONSTANT COMPANION. THANK YOU FATHER
Thank you for sharing.
I know of the talk you are referring to. It was like he reached into the darkness and opened the door, to those of us suffering in silence.
Thank you, I needed your uplifting story.
My FAVORITE PART-. Around the 33:15 minute mark. Taking upon us the name of Christ. Emily mentions Name=character and then David started talking about all the different names of Christ we could take upon ourselves for that week. Advocate, shepherd, etc. ♥️♥️
I always LOVE LOVE LOVE your infectious excitement for all of the Gospel and scriptures! And I’m am sooooo excited for D&C! It was my fav year of Seminary 40+ years ago!
The spirits orchestration I love seeing that and how Gods got it all figured out were truly in his hands and as we are able TO SEE this in our every day lives our spiritual eyes are open and to this I say Thank God for he is Great and all Knowing loving Father ...the spirit of God like a fire is burning ... I also believe the talks reach out to everyone in a personal way when they have ears to hear❤
Oh my goodness! The last 5 minutes of this video need to be shared over and over so that congregations can feel the sacred possibilities of sacrament meeting.
My mother just died on November 10th. She would have been 90 on December 25th. I have spent a lot of time helping her...cooking, draining fluid from her lungs and many other things. I heard a voice saying your called so the Lord has purpose for me so he took her. I do feel alone because my dad and brother died earlier. Joining the church in 1990 I have learned more than any other church tried to teach me.
#givethanks for both of you. I love you both. When I see you, I remember that even though the forces of evil are becoming more organized and evil, the forces of good are becoming more powerful and good and organized as well. Thank you.
For every time I wanted to hit that like button for this video in particular ... THANK YOU for this lesson!
Thank you so much for your service for the Lord. It’s a Monday breakfast tradition that starts the week with the spirit in the hardest times of our history while we are alive.
I love the thought that each of us has a role to play in our meetings, whether we do a talk or not. I think of the deacons passing the sacrament...the role they play. We are the body of Christ's church...His hands and His feet. To do His work within our church family and for those we might invite to join the family. Thank you for your insights this week. ❤
What a profound and moving lesson. I really pray for you. You inspire me. Yes, I know, it's the Spirit, but you are His hands, His heart. Love you guys.
As I listened to this today the one thing that really stood out to me was when you talked about loneliness. I have always been somewhat of an introvert. I love my quiet times doing my own thing, but this year has shown me that I need people, I need to be surrounded by good people. To make things even harder they decided to redo the ward boundaries in the town we live in. There have been a number of families move because of jobs, the lack of affordable housing and other things. So not only have we been isolated they have taken away some of the friends and associates in the wards. I know we are all still friends but it is so nice to go to church and see a friendly face. I know it will be fine in the but it does make the loneliness seem more real.
Loved the insight at about the 34 minute mark about the specific names of Christ, deciding which name or names we will take upon us this week, and letting this influence and guide our behavior during the week. Thanks for your efforts each week to share your spiritual insights to positively influence our lives!
It's a good thing i was home alone watching this because i didn't think it was possible to cry for almost 55 minutes! This was probably one of my favorite videos and I've been following since mid year New Testament! I'm so thankful for new perspectives of sacred practices I've taken for granted in my lifelong membership in the church. The angel Moroni on the temple will be a sacred reminder of those practices that gave Moroni strength and will give us strength in these challenging times!
Thank you Emily and David for helping me not feel lonely this year. But even more than your presence thank you for helping me find Jesus who will always be there to buoy us up in our hard times!
That was so good!!! When Emily shared her experience of teaching with the spirit. It reminded me of an experience I had. I was in the stake YW presidency and we were visiting a ward. It was my turn to teach the YW in this ward. I had prayerful prepared a lesson. When a day or two before I felt like I needed to change my lesson. We met with the YW leaders before I taught the YW. While talking to these leaders we came to find out about a girl who was struggling in this ward. The lesson I had changed happened to be what this young Women needed. I am so grateful for this experience because the Lord taught how he can use us to help his children that we don’t know are struggling or what they are feeling . Thank you for your wonderful lessons you share each week!
The Spirit orchestrated it- one tune while i was a nanny I had to call out in emergency prayer. The Spirit laid out the complete plan for me. I followed it taking a leap of faith that it would work and it did! It was a real life miracle that the plan worked and ever since then I know the spirit can give us general ideas specific ideas or a step-by-step plan including images!
I'm so grateful you post these 2 weeks ahead of the schedule. I do prepare for the week ahead so I can teach my children. Thank you for all the work you put into teaching and preparing. This inspires my love for the scriptures and I love your enthusiasm.
My favorite part is about 34:30 to 38:00 when you discuss taking upon us the names of Christ and knowing when we need each of his individual characteristics. 💜🙏
I had read these chapters in the past thinking, yes I know all about all of this. Listening to you both bring these truths to such a personal level for Moroni and for myself, I was ashamed of myself for my lack of vision and so thankful to you for the personal, loving, longing to live as the Savior would in all things and in all places, especially in my ward family! Thank you for making these chapters so special and important.
I love the part at 18:52 - 20:57 teaching about the word deny in relation to Moroni 1:3. Incredible insights! "Access granted. Access welcome."--loved that thought David!
34:25 When David starts talking about taking on the name of Christ and thinking about the different names of Christ as we do this
When I think of loneliness I think about Christ and the ultimate loneliness that he felt when our father in heaven had to let him fulfill his mission and withdraw himself. Because of that sacrifice we are never alone. I think sometimes suffering from feeling alone helps us to turn completely over to the Savior. and can truly bless us if we can feel his presence and know that we’re not alone. When I’m feeling that way I just like to picture him with open arms waiting for me to turn to him.
I love what Emily has to say about building ward families at about the thirty minute mark
Building a strong Ward family, walking with each other on the path of righteousness, strengthening each other, praying for each other. I have so many notes for my calling in this section.
Emily/Dave
@30:57 talking about the family of faith, being open and honest with our journey on the covenant path.
Years ago I was meeting weekly with a 12 step group. It was a time in my life when I needed the strength of others who had walked the path out of addiction before me. I remember lamenting during that time, "Why can't the fellowship n the church be like the? The open honest anonymous nature of truly sharing my struggles, my ups and downs, and being strengthened by a group that does not condemn or just, but just reaches out to help."
This past year, with Come Follow Me, the recent changes in meeting format, the change in ministering and in pandemic response I feel like the Church is shifting to be more like the 12 step support atmosphere. What you described about the brother in your ward is exactly what I was longing for in a church family back then.
Thank you Emily and David, for helping me feel more confident in my new calling as Sunday School Teacher, and for helping me prepare to teach my first lesson tomorrow. 🤍
I think this is one of my favorite DMT episodes. Thank you for introducing me to Moroni's "Sacred Practices" and inspiring me to make them more sacred to me.
We LOVE how you guys work together. THANKS (life is good)
I love the idea of taking upon us a different name for Christ each week. I think this would add more value to my time in the sacrament to pick a title. I like the title "Good Shepherd" and I think it is something that can help give added meaning to my long days as a mother of toddlers.
Deny. President Nelson-let God prevail. That's the thought that came to mind when we were discussing the word deny.
Starts at 34:20-who won church? The spirit....which name of Christ will we take upon us this week? Be an advocate, be a Shepard, etc...we take on his character and then become a witness...who do I need Christ to be for me this week..healer...so who do I need Him to be for me or how can I be His character for others!! SOOOO GOOOOD! Never thought of that before!! Thank you so much!!!
I also loved that section, I want to incorporated in my weekly sacrament worshipping time. Thank you. You are My Lord's helpers.
35:50 When you talk about taking one of Christ’s names and focusing on that attribute. This gives me lots to think about ❤️
The part of what “deny” means in Greek. I was told by the spirit that I was “denying myself” which I had never thought of. It is a talent that the Lord has given me that I have pushed off. I was told that the Lord made me this way and when I didn’t pursue this talent I was denying myself...........
I was so touched and shocked. Thank you for the definitions of deny!
I like David's "by which name" segment. It's a good month to review the names of Christ. And pick one to focus on. Really great idea. Thanks so so much
It completely describes Christ. He felt alone, forsaken, and all of those feelings.
Prayer- one spring there were bad storms approaching, a 9 out of 10% chance if damaging tornado. As relief society sisters we all prayed in our homes that the storm would pass us by. It did! Our prayers pushed that storm and weakened it considerably.
I like what was said about praying for each other. During our Elders' Quorum meeting I almost was going to ask the brothers to pray silently for each other to start the meeting... praying for this community
My favorite part of this video is the very beginning. Emily and Dave are constantly looking for ways to improve the instruction and tools they use to share. I love the example they set that we can always improve and make the ways we teach and minister more exceptional.
I keep thinking of this idea of "alone." I had to go to the courthouse downtown last week to file some paperwork on some vandalism done to our home and cars the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The courthouse was literally empty and I could not get anyone to help me file the necessary paperwork to protect my family from further harm. Rarely have I felt so empty and alone. Finally a gentleman from the Law Library of all places saw what was happening and stepped in. He got on a computer, contacted the right person, made sure I got to the right office and met up with the person I needed to hand it off to and get it in front of a judge. That night as I laid in bed pondering the day I wondered, "Where was Jesus?" And then I remembered the young man from the Law Library and his indignation over what was happening, and his determination to help me. It was a reminder that He is always there and will take care of us regardless of the circumstances.
I, Jody, will not deny the Christ.
This lesson is very meaningful to me. I love Moroni. I connected with so many parts of his teachings: the manner in which Christ has set up ordaining callings, offices and blessings. How that circle of people love, protect and minister to those they lay their hands on. The ward family and our DMT family. The one thing that spoke to me on a deep level was the story, Emily, you shared about Stake conference from Moroni 6:9. I had a personal experience recently about how the Spirit leads and directs his meetings. I am in charge of the music in our stake. We were preparing for a virtual Stake Conference and had been unable to meet for a year. I felt prompted to select some hymns for the meetings, although I didn't yet know the theme or the subject of the talks, I had faith the Lord knew. I prayed for guidance and was given the hymns. Our Stake Presidency approved the selections. As I sat and listened to Conference, I was overwhelmed by how those hymns went along with the speakers topics. One of the speakers included in his talk one of the hymns just before we sang it. I know the Lord is at the helm, that the priesthood power is real, that His authority is on the earth again, and I am grateful that the Spirit leads us as we serve in the kingdom.
May I also add I was so touched by 35:00 By Which Name? This year we have not been able to partake of the sacrament very often due to the pandemic. It has become even more precious to us, and taking the sacrament prayer and looking at each part is touching. Our Stake President spoke on the sacred ordinance recently and when he referred to the white cloth covering the trays of bread and water as a representation of our Savior's body, it took on a deeper meaning for me. I love that no matter how long we are members of the church, the Lord can continue to teach us and show us more of his love and understanding of his infinite sacrifice for us.
Partaking of the sacrament has taken on new meaning for me this year. I remember the last sacrament meeting that I attended before the pandemic stopped our weekly meetings. We were on vacation in Seaside, Oregon. As the cute young priest blessed the water, he said: “that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of Thy Son, which was shed...” then he paused slightly and continued with greater emphasis on the next two words, “for them.” It was enlightening! I ponder on that regularly, not just when I partake of the sacrament, but as I study and draw closer to the Savior! I’m so thankful to be one of “them,” who recognizes who He is and what He did for all of us. Following Jesus Christ is a choice. It is my choice!
"let's act like family members" said David "we are family" said Emily. So many people need their ward families so much for support, friendship, spiritual strength and care. Love that part!
Asking me to choose a timestamp is like asking me to decide which child I love the most.
This is my favorite episode. Tender and sweet. Thank you.
This is the year I dive in with you into the Doctrine of Covents you are awesome teachers you give me great Joy
I also LOVE 27:17 - 28:18 talking about the manner of the ordinance to receive the Holy Ghost--beautiful symbolism!
Thank you for all you do! I love and am grateful that @christopherpatch time stamps your videos. It makes it so much easier to use when teaching, he summarizes the different parts so well and he also adds links for anything you refer to. It was even more helpful when you pinned it a couple weeks ago because sometimes it's hard to find him with all the comments. If it is possible to do that every week I think others would find it helpful too and it would make it easier for others to find their favorite part for the Instagram post. :)
Glad the time stamps are helpful! If you ever have trouble finding them, just sort the comments by "Newest First" (not "Top Comments") and then scroll to the bottom of all the comments. My comment with the Time Stamps will be at or near the bottom, since I'm usually one of the first comments each week.
I was a Vietnamese linguist during the war, which is a tonal language. Later I joined the church and served as a missionary to an Asian branch. The Vietnamese really struggled with hymns because melodies going up and down changed the translation of their language. I’m not sure if we really realize how the Tower of Babel confused the world. So I liked you conversation on on language at 18:56, because I look up the Greek, the Hebrew and even the Latin to understand what people are really trying to say...thanks
Right around 34:45 when David talks about which name should I take upon me this week. So so great. Thanks Bishop!
As we partake of the sacramental emblems worthily and WORK to remember, keep commandments and take upon us His name THEN those emblems will be blessed and sanctified to us in our lives which is what the first line of the sacrament prayers request for us....
This is the realization that came to me during a Sunday School lesson a couple of years ago as a gospel truth...now I need to Remember daily this truth to make it a reality in my life!!!
I have not read the D&C so very excited to dig in and see the church history sites!!!
Doc&Cov melts my heart and feeds my soul. It's incredible!
David & Emily, you lift my spirit every week! I loved the idea of thinking of the names of Christ during the Sacrament as what I need the coming week, but also the thought of thinking of a name of Christ for someone in your ward family that needs that attribute this week. Excellent start to my week. I love Moroni who prevailed through his trials.
In minute 20, I love the segment on finding what deny means to you. I am excited to study more this week about what this word deny means to me, but I felt impressed to share a thought that came to me as I was listening this morning on my way to work. Last night the stake presidency shared a talk about light with us (speeches.byu.edu/talks/dennis-l-largey/armour-light-romans-1312/). It is a good talk - you should listen to it, but it made me wake up this morning thinking about light. As I listened to what deny means, I was also thinking about the light of Christ. I always thought when I read "I will not deny Christ" as I simply will believe he is real... but it never crossed my mind that denying Christ is a more ACTIVE approach to stopping him from being a part of our lives. Bringing light into the picture, I love to think of it as having a room full of windows and having the savior fill our lives with his beautiful light. Denying him is to put up blinds and stop that light from coming in, but even more than that, its not a meet me half way partnership. Christ's light WILL enter our lives. He WILL come in if we let him and if we aren't BLINDED by the adversary. He has a vision much more expansive for where he will take us if we will let him shine his light down those paths. His light purifies, sanctifies and lifts us. - Thanks for the awesome thought guys!!
That is such a good talk. Thank you so much for sharing that!
Thank you for sharing your insight! You certainly have caused me to be more aware of when I might be denying the Lord access, closing off my ears, eyes, heart to His voice, His light.
Thank you for your lessons each week. I look forward to them so much!
Thank you both for your time and devotion and Spiritual thoughts regarding 'Come Follow Me' I do look forward to your classes next year and have bought your book 'Dont Miss This in the Doctrine and Covenants' .
Keep up the good work if the Lord.
Love you. 🏴
33:47 - 37:05 teaching about taking upon us the name of Christ--meaning authority and character. Also "but which name?" Wow SO GOOD!
Moroni is "letting God prevail" by choosing not to deny Christ.
He Moroni, also does not make himself known to his enemies his strategy for staying alive is to avoid his enemies ( I see enemies as things that keep you distant from the Lord).
Thanks guys! Love Emily's stake conference story and David's who-won-church story.
We use the term ward family in the East. Ward family is real. We rely on each other. I hope everyone has a chance to experience this family experience and feel the love inside this family circle. We try to create this for our youth so wherever they wander if they come here they're home.
I lived on the east coast for a few years and that’s exactly how I’d describe it. I will forever love my NJ ward family❤️
From Diriamba Nicaragua I just want to said I love don’t miss this
Saludos desde WA! I also love Don’t Miss This!
Saludos desde Indiana!! We love don't miss this too!! ♥️♥️♥️
My goodness, such an amazing lesson. So much to think about. I also do what David does, I take a moment and say a pray before I hit the send button. Prayer moves the hand that moves the world. Thank you to both of you, amazing people.
I just loved your story around 52.20. It gave me chills. I can't honestly say I have felt the spirit in that way, so I love to hear other people's stories.
So many good things but my favorite is around 49 when Emily shared her story about having our meetings be after the manner of the Spirit. I feel this is something we need to learn to do better! How much more could I learn if I let go of my expectations and insecurities if I just let the Spirit guide. Every so often when I have been teaching I have said something that I had never thought of and I knew it was the Spirit speaking through me and I learned from myself.
At 37 minutes talking about taking on the character attributes of Christ as we take on His name, or asking Him to a particular attribute for us
“But which name?” I love it. That idea is life changing! ❤️
My favorite part was at 46:06 when talking about praying for others. I know that I forget to pray for specific people and things at night, but when I pray immediately for those people asking for blessings on FB or otherwise, I don't forget. I'm happy to not be alone in this practice.
I was having a conversation with a couple of my favorite heroic sisters. One of them had been out shopping at Dillard’s, and she had had a conversation with the clerk and the clerk had shared with her, a complete stranger, that she was having a health challenge, and my friend told her that she would pray for her and put her name on the prayer roll at the temple. As we were talking, she told us that she could not remember the woman’s name, and my other friend quickly remarked that the was ok, that the Lord knew who she meant...so “the woman at Dillard’s”went on the
Prayer roll that week. It was such a great reminder that the Lord truly does know who we are! I don’t ever want to forget that!
The past 8-9 months I have really been trying so hard to remember to pray specifically by name for all I have promised to pray for! ❤️
My siblings are also working together to help our 91 year old parents feel not so lonely
Go visit them regularly. There literally is no reason not to.
Did you all know that I'm the cause of the pandemic? Life was too busy and I had all kinds of excuses of why I couldn't strengthen my relationship with my Savior. So Heavenly Father took away all those excuses and here we are. Im at home (most would say ALONE) working on my relationship with my Savior. I'm deep in my scriptures and on my knees and in tune with my family. So even though the pandemic has been hard not only financially, physically and emotionally, it has offered me a sacred opportunity to focus on THIS Jesus!!
I love these videos!! I feel like I'm in Sunday School and if Im being honest- Im ok with it staying like this. It does tend to make me enjoy reclusiveness and I will need to work on that but for now I love being in my sanctuary of virtual learning.
Looking forward to the new year in the D & C.
I once studied "bread" from the topical guide for about 2 weeks and it was so enlightening, one of the best scripture studies ever for me.
You are so right about studying the synonyms. I was thinking about the list you made for the word "deny" and realized how there are so many ways to deny Christ, even without realizing that is what we are doing. Some people full out reject him or refuse him access. But others merely withhold, or hold back, a portion of themselves. This is a much more subtle denial that people may not even be aware they are doing. I found myself asking the question, "Am I holding back a part of myself from Christ?" And I'm afraid I have been. However, I'm grateful to the Spirit for pointing it out to me so I can remedy it. And I'm thankful for this video for getting the "conversation" started. 😁
Great job as usual. Thank so much!
Can my time stamp be from 0:00 to 55:37?
Thanks so much, you both are Awesome!!! Love you both🙏🙏💞💞
I love listening 😍♥️ to the Bible Lesson, don't miss this Moroni Chapter 1_6! Clara Williams
Right around the 35 minute mark!! Mind blowing. I would love a fireside just on that!!
So Grateful for you both!!!!
Love The Tenderness, of how you talk about our Savior ♥️♥️♥️
Love your Humor too, so Funny sometimes Dave😀😀😀
You two are awesome! Thanks for all you do
Good way to start the week.
I love these videos!!
About a year ago while I was reading Moroni, it struck me that he was giving the foreseen restored church its first General Handbook. Moroni seems to be saying, “Joseph, here’s the fundamentals of how the Lord’s Church is run.”
Loved 34:58 "But which name?" Such a cool thought! I love the idea of bringing a different title with us as we partake of the Sacrament. We truly do need/rely on different things each week that only our Savior can provide.
That was super!
Wow
I ordered the journal after watching the clip, and it's already being shipped!
Super excited 😁
Got my study journal and devotional book last week!
Thank you very much. I’m sure enjoyed the lesson 😍👏
Thanks for sharing this class God bless you guys ❤️🙏
Time stamp: 31:13; we could to better at creating ward families. I have been divorced 9 years now and in that time I had been in 4 wards, one was due to a move, the other were boundary re-alignments. Only 1 of those 4 wards did I truly feel they were my family. As singles, we often don't "fit in". In addition, I am from California and now live in Utah. In California I felt more a part of a ward family then I have the whole 22 years I have been in Utah.
Attending church meetings could be a greater impact to all if we embraced each other as family, not just members of a ward.
I truly appreciate your insights. They definitely open new dimensions to the scriptures. However, we should be careful to infer that what Moroni wrote came from him. We should always remember that he was the lens, but the light he shared with us, came from heaven. God used Moroni's experiences, those things that his father and mother taught him to create that lens. And yet, as to what to write, Moroni recorded what Christ dictated. I'm so thankful that he had that time to reflect, seek inspiration and be faithful to the very, end fulfilling his commission on earth while preparing the way for the restoration.
I had that impression for a prayer list too!!!
My favorite part was the discussion on Christ’s names (roughly 33-38 mins). What name should I take upon me? So profound. I got chills all over when Brother Butler said this. 💗
Love thinking about taking upon the names of Christ as part of a character study. It’s been on my mind a lot...so glad you guys talked about all the names we know him by. How about this one: Sanctuary ❤️
I agree I really miss going to church.
Minute 44ish watchful into Prayer 😍
"Practice ground!" Yes!
34:15 or so, you were talking about taking on us the name of Christ, but another word for name was Characteristics, of the Savior. The Spirit touched my heart then to help me understand how I could do this.
So many great moments, but 34:20 where we talk about which name we should take upon us, or which name do we need Christ to be for us at any point in our lives is one for me to ponder deeply.
You have no idea how much I appreciate all the time and effort you two put into to helping me learn the scriptures, and in a fun way. I have a question. You were talking about a weekly scripture relating to the lesson that you post every week on Instagram. Do you have an email list for the scripture for those of us who don't have Instagram? I deleted all social media about a year ago.
I really enjoyed the last couple of minutes when you spoke about Moroni 6:9 and the importance of doing our part and being intentional about bringing the Spirit into our meetings.
A thought, the second comming is waiting for us to be living a Zion community as saints.
I read that somewhere, and I'll find who said it. That it will be the increased righteousness not the wickedness that will bring the Savior back.
"The Savior will not return because the world has ripened in iniquity; but because the saints have increased in righteousness and in hastening the work. " D. Todd Christoffersen
@@christinejohnson3379 I love this! Do you know when/where he said it? I'd love to read the context
I will not deny Jesus Christ!
