Life in Our Alaska Cabin | How Do You Live Like That?

- It has been -25°F for almost a week now and at 7 weeks old, Henry doesn't get to play in it! Therefore, I thought that I could stay inside and answer a question that pops up in our comments often..
"How do you live like that?!"
We honestly think this is a pretty cozy life. Small, but cozy!
With a primitive running water set-up, wifi, a place to do your business, and a place to cook, we definitely make do out here in the Alaskan wilderness. The tiny cabin really isn't much different than our camper living was. The camper was easier to organize and had better running water. But the idea is the same!
Pack only what you need to live in a small space and try not to drive each other insane!
We are off-grid here and off winter road maintenance. That means we are not connected to any city utilities and no one plows for about 5 miles of the road. That doesn't mean that we don't have access to the outside world though!
We do have to snow machine in and out of the cabins and we have solar power. With solar power, we do still have wifi and even a TV! The fancy new snowmachines commute us in and out so we can go to town for groceries and water.
At the end of the day, it all works! We are incredibly grateful for this tiny cabin that is keeping us and our new baby warm this winter. By next winter we will have our own cabin on our own property for the first time in over 2 years. We will be creating a running water system, hopefully we'll have a working well, and so much more space to spread out!
The big reason this all works for us is that it is temporary. We can all do hard things for a short period. We love the little cabin and know that we will smile on even the tough days in it. We will probably also never live in such a small place again!

Hi guys baby is growing fast. I have lived in smaller space than that with a baby. It's doable and you can do it. Stay strong enjoy.
I am 72 so naturally I like the amenities but when I was your age, I would have loved the adventure of it all. We lived in Homer for a couple of years and I loved it. I think Levi is so patient and sweet and supportive. It may be a little inconvenient now but again it is part of the big adventure. Thanks for sharing it with me.

Sometimes there is no way to explain to people why you are happy there. Challenging yes, but what an amazing place and life!! You are doing great!!

Becca, you and Levi and Henry are living a lot better than many.You have water, heat and a means to cook food. As a new mom you are doing great. I am sure living tiny has taught you about organization and what the important needs will be in the home you build. Looking forward to seeing that happen. Give Henry a hug for all of us.

My wife and I lived in a 240sq ft shed in for a good bit of time, deep in the mountains. We had no trim and our children slept on the floor on a mattress. We had to hike to the top of a mountain in deep snow to get to our truck. It was about a 30 - 40min walk with 2 toddlers. We showered outside. We eventually put up 2 solar panels for some lights, and we had NO running water. We cooked and did dishes outside in the winter. It was AWESOME. Our health was amazing because we had purpose and we stayed busy. The plan was to build the place out but we never got the chance to. Long story. Saying that, both my wife and I came from nice homes and had no idea we were capable of living in such a way. We actually now prefer that way of living and want to go back to it.
People these days have truly become weak. To comment on this lady's CZcams channel with any sort of disgust on how they are living, shows that most people have been weakened by this system they are under, and have no clue how to fend for themselves. People have lived this way for thousands of years and thrived. No, you do NOT need a 1500sq ft home and a separate bedroom for every person in the home to be happy. That is actually very wasteful in the long-run. People are going to be surprised when this system they love and live in, collapses. I work in the cybersecurity field for a living, and it's clear that the end goal is to have people living in much smaller homes than they are now, and all bunched up together. This lady and her family here are survivors. They have the skills needed to make it when most won't be able to. They are VERY blessed.

There’s something you’d learn by doing things. The way you are doing things that you cannot learn when everything is just handed to you, you were doing an amazing job, and it’s beautiful in Alaska. My husband & I had a 345' cabin on a lake....went up on week-ends....1 bedroom..1 bathroom & kitchen*living room comb....we winterized it (before we bought it -it was just a summer cabin) Every piece of furniture has to have more than I use...propane heat (we kept it heated even when we weren't there) It was very enjoyable...We each have our own way of life...Your's is temporarily because you were looking for land to build....I could not live in a 3000' home...wasted space * too much cleaning...
First and foremost your baby needs you. Filming should not take precedent over bonding with and nurturing your son. ❤❤ He's only small for such a short time and this time with him is critical.

Living in a small cabin is not easy but Henry is little and in about 12 to 15 months you will be glad to have more space. Until then enjoy and not let others knock it. It really is not a bad thing.

Yes! Once the snow melts we will move into the camper on our own property. Then once the cabin is done, we will move in there and get back to the woodstove! 😍

I am envious of your lifestyle because I wish we had done what your doing with your husband. We had longed to do it but just never did now I am to old and my husband passed away from cancer after 47 years. So i am envious. Lucky u but at least I can enjoy watching vicariously and living the life through u .!!

Honestly I spent my daughter’s first year in her tiny room playing blocks, singing lullabies, changing diapers. If you’re all happy and healthy, that’s what matters.
Becca you look great and Henry is getting so big! I find it funny that people are making these comments. But I get it you are not doing socially accepted things like living in debt and working overtime to pay for that really cool car or truck and the big screen tv and all that other crap that doesn't matter! It is interesting that you sit in peace nestled in your warm tiny cabin with your beautiful baby cradled in your arms with not a care in the world. You have a ginormous dog probably wondering when you are going to get off his couch so he can get comfortable. I just love Gus! All of your needs are met! You are all safe, warm, and fed. Your house just looks a little different then theirs. I actually think those people should be taking notes on your life because when the collapse happens because it will you will still be okay but they probably wont. Just saying. This is why we moved and paid cash for our house. We are planning to turn one of our 100 sq ft outbuildings into a very small livable space with a loft bedroom . My plan includes two porches with french style doors to increase living space in good weather lol. We will collect water from its gutters and have solar for power and a small wood stove for heat. We will also have an outdoor shower and composting toilet. This will be the back up plan to live in or for company or family to stay when they visit. I am excited about it. I guess I am weird! I think your cabin is perfect for what you need right now!

I like and admire your place and lifestyle you have. One thing I’m curious how are you making it financially, do you have jobs, what line of your you are into. Many of us here want to switch to a simpler life but uncertain how to manage the financial aspect of it.
We were lucky enough to sell our home at the height of the market while being debt-free and now do small jobs locally to fill in the gaps. Mainly, we live VERY frugally except for the few big expenses like the snowmachine. Once the garden is producing and we can bring home a moose, we will be that much more frugal! We plan on doing a video on it all down the road.😁

Wow some of those comments are rude! Whats so hard to understand?? You live in a tiny guest cabin on your husband's parents property because your cabin isnt ready yet. It's as simple as that. No big deal. You will be better off in the end with no debt cause you're not high maintenance people!

Cheechako the first year. If we made it and survived we were deemed Alaskans. Our 1st winter was Awesome. We literally started with nothing and had a brillent life there. ENJOY❤❤

We rehomed Fiona (black and white / new to us) because Lucy (orange / had since a kitten) was super mean to her, and it felt unfair to let her be bullied vs letting her be happy with someone else. 😁
You should just ignore peoples comments. You can live however you want to live. People today are too materialistic have lost their ability to enjoy life. If you let people bother you with their comments you wont survive as a CZcamsr.
