      yes I think this should kind of act like the "family" of Crusader Kings without all the bloat. I don't think it should be micromanaged but act as historical examples of events happening like early protestants (hussites, heretical), protestants, historical civil wars, historical rebellions, etcetera. The current rebellion system in EU4 feels little different than the rebels in Medieval 2 Total War as just fighters without a flag. This could give a new element too of funding rebels in a war or something, possibly being able to recruit AI rebels at the start of a war.

    24:43 Padishah as a title was actually not used until Mehmed II the Conqueror, because Padishah is the equivalent of Emperor in the Ottomans. There is a reason Orhan was a 'Ghazi', he was a warlord, not even a Sultan, yet. In his later years he styled himself Sultan and the Ottoman Beylik truly became the Ottoman Sultanate during his heir, Murad I Hüdavendigar's reign. Not until the capture of Constantinople and Murad I's grandson's grandson Mehmed II Fatih styled himself Kayser-î Rûm 'Caesar of Rome' did the Sultanate truly became the Ottoman Empire.

    I don't know if this is a hot take or whatnot, but leaving mana points out of eu5 I think it's a good decision because that means your actions are more chronologically oriented rather than trying to cheese or wait for mana points to do stuff.

    • @bounteh7542
      @bounteh7542 Před 2 měsíci +4

      The alternative to this would be they make a separate gamemode based on the mana point system but then they would have to balance stuff around a lot more so I seriously doubt it

    • @deimiosxxx
      @deimiosxxx Před 2 měsíci +11

      There is a balance to be targeted. Imperator Rome reduced the instant impact mana abilities compared to the release version, but that made the game slower and more boring. It reduced felt player agency. Too many instant abilities makes a game more like a boardgame/cardgame. Too few instant abilities make the game sluggish and passive like a sim.
      I for one liked the EU4 method more than the Imperator Rome one.

    • @loganhowlett01
      @loganhowlett01 Před 2 měsíci +2

      Well they tried this in Imperator but the people didn't like it so they ended up adding mana

    • @csfelfoldi
      @csfelfoldi Před 2 měsíci +8

      I don't really know. Mana was a way to overcome the odds with good management. If you remove it you'll need other options to make stuff like small city states playable. If said options are always available it could prove worse than the mana system. Take population for example, in EU4 you could use your dump military mana to develop manpower, it was a simple system the game developers could control to some extent by adjusting mana rewards and expenses, while in CK3 you had the development option for the Steward, you could simply set him to work on a county from start to the end of the game and have the largest city in the world in the middle of Siberia.
      In EU4 you actually sacrifice something (rebel suppression, tech, money on expensive advisor etc) to gain more in the future while in CK3 it is basically a free "fire and forget" method to become richest nation in the world. Seeing how population will be a major part of the game I can already see issues with replacing limited resources that affect population with stuff like policies. With player knowledge you can just turtle up, take all the population boosting decisions and limit your wars and devestation (or equivalent in EU5) for the first 200 years while the ai keeps banging his head against it's neighbors than just switch to blobbing and release the hordes.

    I read the "Allows Peasants to Migrate" as also them being able to go from one province to another and not being locked down in place like they would have been at the time.
    So if you have them able to move around you may see some provinces loosing population if for example there is high influence of Nobility estate there and they opress the Peasants, and so there are fewer people working the land there and that province is producing less goods. That's at least how I see it possibly working on top of them being able to go to another country if your country sucks to live in, so we may also see waves of migrations to the new world collonies following wars and famines on the continent, like we saw in real life.

    @dangerousavocadoschannel4081 Před 2 měsíci +9

    Ludi, I have a cool idea for EU5 and I want to hear your opinion. I made a comment on Tinto Talks 5 too. Here it is:
    I have an idea for something I would love to see in this game, which I have not seen done well anywhere before. I have 1500+ hours in EU4 and I find it silly that my nation is willing to fight just as hard on the offense as on the defense, for a cleansing of heresy as for a trade conflict, or against the one province minor next to me or the entirety of Europe in a coalition war. I want to introduce the ideas of War Expectations and Existential Threat.
    Existential Threat:
    Existential Threat should produce bonuses for defending countries. Nations should generally fight harder on the defense than on the offense. As an example, in the systems used in EU4 this could manifest in more manpower recovery speed [from a pop more willing to enlist], lower army maintenance [from a pop willing to be paid less to defend their homeland], or even higher supply limit [from a pop more willing to share with local soldiers]. But different war goals will also differently effect the willingness of the population to fight. A population may not be as enthusiastic in its defense of the conquest of a province of a non-accepted culture group whose pops aren't in the cabinet/leadership of the nation. Meanwhile, a theocracy with a powerful Clergy estate may have a population that regards a "cleansing of heresy" CB as an existential threat, allowing rapid mobilization. In another scenario, the population of a country with a nobility estate at odds with its peasantry/countrymen may regard an attack from a member of the same culture group as more of a "change of management" rather than an existential threat to its existence. I think that defenders should always get some bonus, nations when attacked often rally to the flag, but the degree of this bonus should be modified by the attitudes of the population towards their government, the CB, the opposing nation's culture/religion, etc. There is historical precedent for the perception of existential threat being important to defenders, just look at Ukraine for a modern example.
    Existential Threat perception also provides a fantastic opportunity to tie in with Aggressive Expansion. In EU4, AE either matters a lot (Ottomans join your coalition with -51 AE) or not at all (Ottomans don't join your coalition at -49 AE). Players who aggressively expand accumulate much more AE, which would bump up the existential threat calculation of defenders. This provides a mechanism to slow down the feed-forward loop of conquest and expansion. This could be supplemented by feeding in other systems, like making it so taking non-claimed land in a peace deal gives more AE (in addition to current rules about co-belligerents), or how taking land from a nation's primary or accepted cultures dramatically increases their threat perception of your nation in future conflicts.
    War Expectations:
    Whereas existential threat perception is mainly about buffing the defenders, war expectations can provide a scaling debuff to the attackers over time. There have been many times when more powerful nations have considered the act of enforcing their will on a weaker neighbour to be a "mere matter of marching". Whether it was the Americans in the War of 1812, or again Russia in its war on Ukraine. I would like to see the rate at which a "call for peace"-like mechanic accrues to be far greater when declaring war on a tiny nation than when fighting giga Spain. Pops would reasonably have different expectations of how these two conflicts should progress. This also creates an opportunity for skill expression, as experienced players are able to fight wars more efficiently and more in line with the expectations of their populations, thus suffering fewer of the penalties of a call-for-peace-type mechanic.
    Playing into other systems:
    I think that the twin systems of Existential Threat and War Expectations would increase the immersion of players into the game. Pops would feel like real things that have opinions based on their values and what matters to them (culture, religion, nationalism, etc.). The added benefit is that rapid expansion would become more challenging, especially as players accumulate AE, slowing down snowballing and extending the interesting part of the game. Obviously this system would need to be tuned so that, no matter how threatening the two province minor on your border considers you to be, you can still crush them when you control the whole subcontinent, I'm not suggesting that every war should become the defense of Helm's deep. However, this system would provide interesting opportunities for players to make strategic decisions about which CBs they use against which nations, or which provinces they take in a peace deal. Furthermore, you could give players tools to mitigate their perceived threat level. Maybe if you keep your peasantry super happy, when you invade a country where the peasantry is powerful but unhappy then the defenders get fewer bonuses because actually their peasants are convinced they'd be better off if you won. Threat level could even play into a nations' willingness to sign peace. I don't think threat level should affect warscore costs, but to use the EU4 analogy, it should affect the time until a combatant flips to 'low' attitude and is willing to give you 20 more warscore worth of land than you have actually earned.
    Anyway, I think these systems would add to the realism of the game and fill a void that exists in EU4 where going to war is completely disconnected from what your people or your enemies' people think of you and your nation and want for themselves and their country. In EU4, war is completely a top-down decision, and all wars are the same, simply being modified by "75% cost" or "25% AE" for a reconquest. In EU "Project Ceasar", where it seems that the devs are trying to make the wishes of the population manifest throughout the games systems, I would like to see systems like what I have described integrated into warfare beyond the simple ability to levy troops, which is all that has been mentioned thus far.

From what I remember you couldn't travel through the Austrian Empire freely as an Austrian commoner until somwhere in the 1700s. The feudal system back then expected you to live and die in the town you were born at. I think this privilege touches on that. This also explains why the Nobility realllyy hates this privilege (more freedom to choose -> more expectations of good governance).

    It would be cool to have option to enact powerful laws/privileges that help in short term but are difficult to revoke and come to haunt far later on. i like how in eu4 at the start date in some tags there are a lot of horrible debuffs from estate privileges that have to be rooted fast to fix the country. if there was a way to enact similar things in eu5 while getting short term buffs it would be amazing. those things would be a way to survive immediate threats but in return they would develop into problems of their own later on.

    Building a marketplace in a city, has an effect on nearby locations, including foreign locations. Building a cathedral or a mosque brings pilgrims from nearby locations, transferring money, and strengthening your faith in nearby foreign locations,... If Paradox can make this without performance issues I would be very happy.

    35:00 I think the language you're looking for is the ability to own locations within a province, without having to own all the locations of a province.

I think a game like this masterpiece can become more historical with this kind of flavor

    Since it's the last chance, might as well drop my ideas in a very brief format (i'm not a super pro player so some things may not make sense):
    1. Supply lines and supply depots. The further away your army gets from your provinces (where you build military depots) the harder it is to keep supplied. It needs to survive off of the land and also an enemy army may disrupt the supply lines by harrassing the supply trains or occupying the provinces with depots.
    2. Inaccurate information on the ledger based on your spy network equivalent. The smaller your spy network is with a country the less accurate the information about it in the ledger will be. Those were not 10k soldiers, they were actually 50k!
    3. Mercenary companies can be turned mid-war by paying them more than the current employer. Here culture could play a role, maybe mercenaries from your culture will turn only if paid vastly more money by your enemies, instead merenaries from unaccepted cultures will do it at a much lesser cost.

    I think that the estates should be able to have something like a national focus function to it. Where you will be able to cater too/pay extra attention to 1 or 2 different estates. Where you can choose to either increase loyalty or influence or decrease it. It can be simulated by the king just favoring said parties on a daily basis. One can have prime priority the other can be secondary and be less effective.
    I think this will be a good mechanic to give some more direct control for the player to go in a certain direction/counteract too powerful estates.

    When I first played Imperator years back I was stunned by the pops system cos I'd never seen anything like it before. Although it isn't used there anywhere near to full capacity, you could see the power that level of granularity could have on every aspect of a game if you took that as your starting point and connected all the game systems and mechanics around it. I'm genuinely thrilled to see Johan working on this project because this really will be the game where that happens.
    EUV in 2035 after all the dlc will be a thing to behold if they do this right.

    I really think that adding an extra hundred years or so to the game's timeline means sacrificing a lot in terms of midgame fun. With EU4, if you have a decent amount of experience, it can take the full game to fully complete a mission tree or set of goals, and there are things to do the entire time. It also still increases the probability that the endgame map will look nothing like the actual world over half the time. Having the option to defy history sounds fun, but I also just want to see recognizable timelines sometimes.
