Its funny how Saffa fans have been backing the AB's against the Irish and the rest. The arrogance of the Irish, their pundits, and fans. Sure, we're no saints as fans ourselves. I've been a right prat, truth be told. However, SAFFA and NZ pundits are by far the most humble in terms of the world game. The Irish, my God, they have next level, one-eyed fan, dickheadery which rivals the Ozzy pundits. I am of heavy Irish descent, hence, I thought it was fantastic when Ireland became more competitive about a decade ago. With fond memories of the old Irish commentators from the 80-s to the early 2000'sI I started following them, and was put right off within a year or so. Ireland never lost a match, but the other side always cheated. And they were always extra scathing and dismissive of NZ and SA. Sure, we expect this stuff from fans, moreover, from the Welsh and English, but nasty stuff came from all corners of the Irish media before and after every game. It was truly tedious bollocks. Moreover, I remembered how clever, witty and unlike the aforementioned British press the Irish commentators and their pundits used to be. With a bit more of the old school humility and respect towards worthy opponents Ireland might be able to pull finger, quit their overconfident bollocks and finally make it out of the QF's.

You lucky lucky guy. What a game to be at.
Well done New Zealand. That was a phenomenal Rugby game. Ireland messed up some lineouts but apart from that they played their usual game. Fairly flawless, but this NZ team absorbed the Irish attacks, never backed down and showed why they are still the best Rugby Nation in the World. I think that this was an awesome Irish performance also, today it wasn't to be. But Ireland has come a long way in a very short time and they will be back. We are all very proud of you guys, ye did us proud. If things go to form (no dis-respect to the Argies) it looks like the mighty ABs will be back in another final. I will watch it and as most of us have done when we were young, I will look on in awe at how such a small country like NZ can produce such amazing Rugby teams. They are truly the Brazil of Rugby. It's no shame to lose to NZ.
Like all other Irish fans, I'm deflated and very sad tonight. However.... its only Sport and with all of the other things that are happening in the World at the moment, we have to put losing a Rugby game into perspective.

When Ireland play as Ireland rather than the Ire Blacks, then I might regain some of my respect but as long as they actively recruit foreign talent in some twisted exploitation of the residency laws, while pointing a finger at South Africa for taking back one of our own, I will support any team that plays them. Congratulations to the mighty AB's, they were great and cut off Ireland's supply through dominating the breakdown and also with a defensive effort befitting the Boks. (We got NO turnovers) and our lineout let us down under AB pressure too. They stymied our rhythm and fluidity; they did their homework on us and applied it brilliantly. It was a close run thing though made all the more tense in the last five minutes. So proud to have our team and their massive impact on this great tournament. Your question that when did we last play like that? Hard to compare over the more than 50 years I've been supporting the ABs but the defense against this fantastic Irish team made it a performance right up there. 3 very good tries, adversity with yellow cards, holding our own at set piece and the breakdown, yeah, very proud. First time in my life I've felt sorry for the team we beat, Ireland play superb rugby and this whole quarter final thing doesn't reflect their great place as a rugby nation. Just a mention about Sam Cane, he's copped so much flak but the guy is a warrior and there's a chance he could be holding the world cup aloft in a couple of weeks. A long way to go and anything could happen but tonight was immense, will never forget that defensive effort.

A close rival would be your pool test against the Springboks which matched tonight's intensity. From and AB perspective, we had to play on the same kind of level against the Bokke in the 2015 RWC semi. The second tri nations against the Bokke in 2013 was another where both sides left it all on the track. Your youth sides are dominating the world and I see a continued bright future for Irish Rugby. Man that felt like New Zealand vs New Zealand, was confused who to cheer for half the time. Aki, Lowe, Gibson... Absolutly crushing for Ireland, absolutly, purely gutting. The Schmidt legacy is surely over now, the long reset begins. Anyone that truly knows rugby probably knew NZ were going to take this one but that defence down the left flank was gifting them metres. Need to tidy that up. Hard with the 50:20 rule though, I get it. Lots to work on for NZ, mainly our exits and territory game, but most importantly we dominated the set piece and ruck.

Hey Alfie! I agree with your reaction to what was one of the most riveting games of rugby I've ever seen. Two fantastic teams going at it hammer and tongs for 80 minutes is what made this game such a spectacle for me. Great extended phases of hard physical rugby from both sides. Absolutely gutted for fellow Celts (I'm from Scotland) but what a magnificent effort. It's a fool that even dares to discount the New Zealand All Blacks after the trials and tribulations they've been through in the last couple of years or so. They were excellent tonight and completely deserve their win. Are they back? Well they're still in the tournament, aren't they!
Before I finish, I would like to pay tribute to the performance of Wayne Barnes, the match referee. Finally we had a referee who picked up Andrew Porter's tendency to bore in instead of pushing straight at scrum time and punishing it. Porter has done this for several years and at last he had been rumbled. It was a game of such close margins that this was one of the telling aspects of the game. Another turning point was the try-saving tackle in the NZ in-goal area. What a tackle to get under the ball and stop the ball being touched down. We have seen some great games in this World Cup, but this was just so far out there in front of them all. Hard luck to Ireland; well done and congratulations to New Zealand and good luck to them in the semi-final.

You took the words right out of my mouth in terms of your whole analysis. Hard to be honest without coming off a certain way but you nailed it gracefully. In terms of your q “were they building for it”, from a bigger picture perspective yes I’ve observed casually since the start of Henry’s era there was a shift in mindset with regards to supportive environments in competitive settings. This is aligned with certain academical research into sports psychology. You have to remember that in terms of professionalism, rugby is quite new and was fairly amateur up to the 80’s-90’s. We’ve had state-sponsored rugby-specific academies in NZ for awhile now. The program is also tightly joined with immigration to NZ from the islands. It’s an actual machine that is focused on growth-mindset. Henry’s coaching crew were lauded overseas for their approach, and I think it’s paying dividends now. Just my 2c from a now middle-aged nz ex player/fan.

Excellent review. Yes, this was the ABs best performance since they beat the Boks in the 2nd test in SA last year. The key here was the fact they finally got their best side on the paddock. Our forwards battered Ireland at the breakdown and we won the loose forward battle. Frizell
is critical to our balance and Cane played with a chip on his shoulder and showed his hard edge. What can you say about super Ardie?
After the forwards canceled each other out, it was the ABs X factor, and strike plays, that made the difference. Both Barrett’s were immense, as were Lester and Reiko. A word about Ireland - they showed what a class side they are. They have driven the game forward in the NH and deserve massive credit. They just got their strengths attacked tonight and the ABs just played with more freedom and clarity. Fine margins. Great test match.

      @darrenandrews1979 Před 8 měsíci

@@actiaint I don’t put to much on Reiko re that try of Bundee. Our D line was condensed because DeGroot was slightly out of position as the first defender off the ruck and, even though the ABs had the numbers advantage, that condensed the D and meant they had to scramble when Ireland went wide to Bundee, which gave him some weak shoulders to attack and the rest was history. Frizzal probably had the best shot on Bundee but missed him. The ABs defensive structure puts a lot of pressure on our 13 and causes the need for a lot of scramble D and split second reads to be made.

AB's beating SA in SA last year was pretty special, the first half against the Boks in the rugby championship this year was some of the AB's best rugby. This was different, this was staying composed and in control under huge pressure.
On Sam Cane, he's made for games like this. He doesn't shine so much in games we are expected to do well but when things get tight he always puts in huge work on defense and at the breakdown. Maybe the worst mistake the selectors have made is benching him for the England semi last time. He leads the defense and sets the standard, as brilliant as Ardie is he cant touch Sam Cane in that area. Stats show it as well, its maybe the best 7 in the world at stopping ball carriers on or before the advantage line and he gets to an insane number of breakdowns and does work. Honestly his critics are clueless.

Talking to an Irish friend this evening before the game I said that this Irish team looked like the best team I'd seen in world rugby since the ABs world cup squad of 8 years ago. Unluckily for them, the ABs put on their best performance in 8 years tonight and it was just enough to pip them.

I think you needed to mention the refs performance against nz giving away 2 yellow cards a penalty try and then not giving a penalty to nz when the prop came a around the side of the ruck to steal the ball , and not giving Ireland a yellow card for a professional foul blocking a player when chasing a kick.

Wayne Barnes up to his usual disgraceful tricks trying to help ireland win

Fair comment. If Nuggy went off for that, then the Irish guy should have gone off also, definitely a cynical play. And allowing that steal in the side was a howler and had a big impact on the ABs momentum. The boys handled it tho! Never been a Barnes fan, don't know why he is so highly rated.

NZ had two yellow cards: 20 min with 14 players, numerous forward passes from Ireland missed; produced the performance of the year. Ireland had so many opportunities and could not execute. Credit to NZ they deserved it - I hope they go all the way. Unlucky Ireland, that quarterfinal stage remains elusive. I can't recall a better performance given the circumstances and context.

Nice summary with lots of respect mate...we are thrilled to finally beat the best team in the world. The last time we played this well was last year against South Africa on the high Veldt against all the odds, before that the 2015 world cup win (our third) against the Wallabies at Twickers, that was pure joy for us as was putting 60 points on France in the QF that year.

2015 vs France was the highest level a rugby team has ever played

Not the best ABs performance but the best end of game defense ever

I'm an AB Fan have been for 55 years. I'm very Proud that they won, of course I am, but I always knew this would be an extremely hard game & very close. The only thing that tempers my pleasure in a Win, was that it means Ireland now doesn't a shot at the RWC this year. Ireland has been impressive in the last few years, going from strength to strength, building themselves in to a top class outfit. they have put in a huge amount of hard graft to make them into a side that the rest of the World has to sit up & take notice of & who must be treated with the upmost Respect. Not only have they dominated the 6 Nations Northern Hemisphere this Season, but their biggest point of difference is that they have also convincingly the Southern Hemisphere teams of South Africa, Argentina, Australia & NZ, both at home & away, something other teams who've dominated the 6 Nations failed to do. It's a shame they had to lose to the ABs in the Quarter Final, if they'd met any of the other Quarter Finalists playing the way they did against the ABs, I would've expected to see them in the Final. I've said all along since the pool stages, no one has seen the best AB team that NZ could play & been laughed at. It's true though, that's the way that the ABs play in World Cup Competitions, they have a core nuclear of players, but then try out all the combinations of other players in the pool stage, giving all members of the Squad valuable experience of the atmosphere that's unique to RWC games. It's a testimony to how well they rate Ireland, that for the first time we've seen the best AB team that could, take the field today. Ireland was brilliant, to keep the ABs to only a 4 point win, is more than impressive. This has to be the best game the ABs have played, certainly since the 2015 World Cup & the Era of Steve Hansen & Richie McCaw partnership, probably one of NZ's most successful AB teams of all time. The outcome of this game I believe, was due to more to those 50/50 calls that can make or break a team, than any thing else. Both teams bought their best game today & they were very evenly matched, they certainly couldn't have bought anything else to their Game. Watch out for Ireland in 2027.
