Dropping a transmission by yourself, impressive. Even more so was not cracking those rear windows. Great work.
Yes I think everyone was holding their breath for those rear quarter windows
The only window I ever cracked at a beetle was the front one. The laminated version. And I have done a lot of beetles🙄
I just want to say that we all really appreciate all the hard work you do bringing these videos to us. Thanks
@David Handley - agreed.
Yuppers
Sarah is going to have PTSD form the condition of that transaxle, especially if she didn’t clean it first. But we all know it’s going to be cleaner than Mr Cleans toilet.
I feel you could put an oil rig on the underside of that car.
I don't think you get enough credit for the lovely between-day transition shots. Excellent as always.
If you ever get tired of working on cars you definitely have what it takes for comedy. I love this channel Sarah. Your motivation is contiguous. Thank You
Take the transmission crossmember mount, the one with the big bolts, out. Then when you are done cleaning the transaxle, mount it to the transmission using the rubber mounts. Then put the trans into place by sliding it forward to get the front mount and the. Lift up the back side of the trans so the big bolts line up with the back forks on the floor pan.
yeah, but sometimes (oftentimes) the pickle fork bolts are cross-threaded or otherwise damaged...leads to bad times getting them back in. best not to wake the hornets, imho.
@@vintagespeed When I did my last one I bought a tap and recut the threads and the big bolts spun right in.
Love it when those A-10s fly over.
That's the sound of freedom.
@@bdickinson6751 I thought it was BRRRRRRRRRT
@@MrBlackjimrogan It's a beautiful sound from one of the ugliest, but practically built, planes ever.
“Where’s the kaboom!? There was supposed to be an earth shattering kaboom!? Someone has stolen the Q-36 space modulator!!!” Love the shirt you’re rockin Sarah. ❤ the bug ain’t bad either😉. Keeping the stickers…..fire! Someday that bugs gunna be mine! Cheers for your usual 26 hr days
You do way better work than my father & uncles. They have never touched a tool to an engine and not stripped something.
Sarah laying on the new carpet in the fetal position
sniffing the carpet, ....just adorable. Made me smile.
Love your goofiness.
I tend to put my like up at the first funny part of each video. This one was chock full! Love you Sarah! 💕
You are always doing something fun with your story, you are one in million
The only one!
Lol Sarah’s “messy” garage is levels above what my garage thinks is possible for cleanliness… I suppose I’ll need to address that one of these days 🤷♂️😅 if working didn’t take so much time it’d ruin my excuse 🤣
Came here for the car stuff, learnt some joinery whilst I was at it 😂
One thing I’m pretty sure of, the shop won’t ever stay a mess for long. The VW is coming along nicely, not a surprise. Also, almost at that 500k mark. 👍🏻
I never got the appeal of bugs as someone who grew up after their time (and in a country that didn’t get them), but this beetle is becoming very tempting. I can’t imagine driving a car built with the attention to detail Sarah has - it’s gotta be like a brand new beetle in 2022.
I also wish I had your in depth knowledge of car parts and hardware as well as your ability to make do with tools you have on hand. I go out to buy a new tool as soon as I run out of skill and you’re removing transaxles with a floor jack. Oh and if I’m wishing for things - I’d like your work ethic as well…
Ok, now I'm intrigued. What country did VW not take over with the importation of the classic vw beetle.
@@kyledavis4890 Russia, land of Жигули and Mосквичей
I’m sure some beetles have made it there by now
@@Anya-Prime that makes sense. I guess, the closest thing to the classic VW beetle would be the East German Trabant.
@@Anya-Prime so sorry about what's going on over there in your homeland. I hope that leaders finally decide to get along and give peace a chance.
My step dad had nothing but vow’s. He’s a jerk, so I projected that on everything vw. Can’t stand them😆
This has been a really interesting and informative built! I really like how you explain how parts work (the heater exchange) as you put them back together. Whoever wins this Bug will certainly have a quality built vehicle!! Love your work!
pop out windows are a rare thing but worth it in hot weather when you open front wing windows and air flows through the back for rear passengers coolness . i keep them as well
They are so popular in the classic vw beetle world, that there are a few shops that repop them. Again, qc is not at Heinz Nordhoff levels, most are repopped in China.
I’ve owned my bug since I was 12 . I was always told how easy it is to work on one .then they buy one thinking they are fixing over night and I lmao when they realize in the shit they got them selfs in . I’m very impressed with they way you handle the restoration great work . Te esta quedando a toda madre
I have never heard someone say Nonsense in one conversation that much ever! I like it.
OMG that's the first thing I did when they installed new carpet into my house!! LOL
About 40 years ago I temporarily adopted a sad old Karmann Ghia Type 3, now sometimes known as a Razor. I decided to see if I was into restoring cars. I wasn't. More power to the people that are, but watching this confirms my self-evaluation.
If you repack the CV joints, if you can find it as NOS, I highly recommend the old genuine VW CV joint grease that had a very high Molybdenum disulfide content and was made in Germany.
Hi Sarah, you do a remarkable job of restoration by showing all the steps, with a very high quality, you do everything alone in addition. When compared to TV shows or in 1 episode they redo the engine, the interior, the chassis ... by joking every 30 seconds we understand that it is just entertainment, or the real work is not shown unlike you. Don’t kill the spider if you can. Have à good afternoon. 🙏
That’s because 99% TV shows have a crew of people off camera doing the work. Most of it is just staged product placement. What I do is not financially smart since I buy almost all my parts out of pocket, nor is it healthy to work this much.
@@SarahnTuned Yes, you're right, but it's your passion, you just have to find the balance to preserve your health and your personal life
A "can of stupid?" That's the best description of a grimy starter I've ever heard! LOL
In my old bugs that didnt have a back seat , i would put a carpeted wood shelf from the back out to where the heater tube area is , made for a nice big flat area , also , leave the rear tranny mount on the tranny then ya only have the two big bolts to deal with insted of lifting thr tranny over the mount , have fun .
"Maybe I just have strong thumbs?" Always the eternal optimist!
I am so jealous of you having A-10 Warthogs just flying around. My all time favorite aircraft :)
Don’t be, it’s a nuisance when trying to film car reviews.
@@SarahnTuned Lol true, I work at an Airfield and do get sick of the noise sometimes.
@@SarahnTuned I'm still jealous
At least the A-10s are the quietest of the fighters the Air force has. I used to live at the end of the runway and I hardly noticed the A-10s, F-16 with afterburners were one of the worst.
@@wild_lee_coyote Problem is that Davis Monthan doesn't just have A-10s flying around, it gets everything with wings sooner or later flying around. And that doesn't take into account the commercial air traffic flying into TIA which is less than 5 miles away in a straight line.
The bug leaks blood !!!
Nurse Sarah will bring it back to life !! Better than it left the factory !!
My 1st Bug was a '69... 1st year of rear CV joints, Dropped a 1776cc engine with a low-end cam and counter weighted crank, port-n-polished heads, 10 lb flywheel, SCAT 3 puck disc and a VW bus clutch plate, cage, single 44mm Delorto carb, Stinger exhaust, lightened it up and raced it on Saturdays... It would eat Camaro IROCs at an 1/8th of a mile... Wrecked it racing a Nissan mini truck... Thanks for the memories 🙂🙂🙂
Sarah, you can always strap a piece of rubber mat over the top of the battery to protect it from arcing (We used to off road ours and if someone was in the back seat would have issues with the bouncing and the battery, then rubber fixed it nicely). Also the heater does not work very well but you do not get any fumes inside the cabin from it. Ragnar looks awesome and I am enjoying the build.
So much admiration for your ability to do things without a helper. Can't wait to see the clean transaxle when you put your super cleaning powers to work.
How long did you search for that PERFECT piece of plywood?
Charlie picked it up for me, he didn’t notice until dropping it off.
“Piece of wood” … I see what you did there 😉😂
Might need a fire proof membrane coating the wood placed above the battery. Loving this build.
It helps to use the metric side of the tape measure since it makes math much easier, base ten over fractions any day.
Mom had a Bug...a 71 SuperBeetle....Those were the HOTTEST Summers I ever experienced, riding around with 1/4 vent windows for AC.
Awesome video.. hey viewers let's get Sarah -n- Tuned to 500K!!! I know you love this channel as much as I do!!!
Once I finish all the beetle content, I've officially seen all your videos ♥️
This was one of those videos where all I could think was, "That's going to suck to put back in." 🤣
Wood in custom auto interiors is a normal thing, they often will sculpt it to suit the design. Watch Gabe's Custom interiors on CZcams. They use it all the time, and they are some of the best in the business.
Getting close to 500K subscribers! Woot woot 🙌🏼
As always Sarah, a complete and concise view of the things you are working on. I have been impressed with your work since stumbling across your (wait for it,...) channel a couple or more years ago. No other mechanical "how to" channel out there in the wilds of YouTubia works harder, and delivers the correct and superior methods, than you do. Everything you do, especially with car repair/restoration/modification is done to the most exacting standards,...Yours. You are an inspiration and I hope I speak for the majority of your viewers when I say, "Thank-You, Sarah!!" I wouldn't be surprised if big Fabrication Companies haven't tried to steal you away from all the glitz and glamour of the CZcamss, but Please Sarah, Please stay and show us the proper way of doing things!! (No I'm not being facetious, I'm being honest) Yours in grease - Dave
One of your best! I rehabed 3 beetles. Came close to 25% of your quality control and skill level. Never knew what could or SHOULD be done. You are, simply, AWESOME!!!! KUDOS
Instead of fibre board they do make corrugated plastic. Works great for parcel shelves and door pads. Yes, Canadians say door pads, not door cards.
Thanks!
Great work on my Beetle Thank-you
Wow! 599k subscribers! Half a mill by end of September? I vote yes.
😈😈😈 patience and ingenuity is what rebuilds or refurbishments , fix cars 😈😈😈
That 'package self' is meant for a pair of 12s on 1K power. Because well, because to make sure you can hear it up front. It would suck to miss one note from Disturbed, and any other music made loud to be played loud. :)
Negative on the boat anchor speakers.
@@SarahnTuned :( I love my boat anchors. When you drive the heaviest Civic Si ever made, what's a few more lbs?
Congrats on making half a mil subs! You have certainly earned them. I will always be one of your biggest fans.
Gary
Are you rebuilding the transaxle? There should not be fluid running out just from removing a half shaft. Don's Bus Box Donson Performance in Peoria, AZ was only about $350 a few years ago. I'm sure there is few people doing transaxle rebuilds in Tucson. The lock washer should be Schnorr washers, one time use. They look like thin Nord-lock washers
Great progress Sarah. Going to be a cool bug when done.
It's great seeing you discover all the weird quirks of these cars. And not that you'll see this but that transaxle is pretty reasonable, dirty wise. Mine and a lot of others I've seen where in a lot worse shape. Good news is, they clean up really nice.
You have to appreciate those German engineers. Using the exhaust manifolds to provide heat for the passenger compartment. The pioneers of exhaust gas recirculation.
No gas exchange, just heat transfer.
Harsh but funny.
Hey Sarah, I, too, am a Veteran of The Air Force but probably a bit earlier than you. To give you an idea I was Separated ad a Sergeant, to Staff or Tech but a Buck Sgt. I was also an SP and carried a .38 as my sidearm. OK, I know you're done guessing. I was in fro '70 to '74. You do great work, keep it up and Aim High.
You are doing a FANTASTIC JOB! I love how you remind us that you are a veteran Mechanic without telling us you are a veteran Mechanic! :D
I am surprised that you are not pressure washing the undercarriage with a Water / Simple Green degreaser Mix before you hit it with the Dry Ice. But what do I know, Right?
as A suggestion, you should sign the inside of the Glove box. "RAGNAR - Rebuilt by Sarah." Thanks for all these videos, you are actually raising the Bar for people who do restorations you know. (Just Saying) you show people that you CAN do it right.
Use the air gun to blast a lot of the undercoating off. Has worked for me on 1950s Alfas.
I click on this because of the thumbnail ...jk. I always love how Sarah attention to detail. Who ever win this car would keep in the museum.
Wow girl. Can't believe you put those pop out windows in by yourself. I just installed a set on mine. And had to have the wife hold the glass in so I could get it lined up and the screws in.
Aircooled VWs of the USA
After 5 days of pulling my hair out with this 93 4.0L ranger, only getting 5v to the fuel pump no matter what I did. I went hard into testing electrical and learned my ecu was shot. (Im admittedly dumb when it comes to electronics) but yea. learned about ground switching in the ecu, and why that 5v existed and now i'm having a tall drink, watching sarah with my feet propped up... waiting to be disappointed come monday when i put it in and its wrong or I am... either way. Congrats to sarah for almost 500k SUBS!!!
Sarah, you really put a smile on my face with your video's, I guess that's the reason I look forward to them. As for the black widow spider, I would not even go close to the VW until I knew it was gone [ down the vacuum cleaner hose ].
When Sarah breaks out the jigsaw you know things have gotten serious lol
Makes one wonder how they put together such a complicated interior on assembly line. I used to have a 69 1200 Beatle (gutless) and a 72 westfalia raised roof camper van (cool) !!
Carpet Taco's and Hard Woody Knots go well together : ) Awesome work Sarah.
My 1st car was a 72 Bug.. I loved it. Awesome seeing this process
LOL that was fun, who knew that beetle would be so dirty!! I hope the spider gets the hint and makes a clean getaway.
Nice A-10, there are a lot of car shows but only one Sarah -n- Tune great content, girl.
Your workshop is tidy compared to mine!
Mine looks like an untidy person keeps going in there….
first car was a 1971 pale yellow bug. I'm loving this Sarah!!!!!
Great job Sarah! You got this!
Noticed an EMPI logo. Used their exhaust system on my ‘64 Karmann Ghia. Nice sound. Put a tuned extension on it.
Yay! Another appearance of Herr Zwei!! Can't wait for the ice blasting.
Hey Sarah, your construction skills certainly look like they’re improving apparently there’s nothing you can’t do🙂🐧🐧🐧👍
Love the cartoon themed t-shirt.
I always like it when Sarah makes entertaining car videos like this :)
@Miquel Kennedy - agreed. I live for it.
Loved the A-10 flyby at 4:45. Nice work, keep it up.
First time I've seen Nordlock washers used on a car, there used on BT Toyota forklifts & so much better at resisting vibration then either threadlock or nyloc nuts.
Ever consider an AGM battery so you could have the terminals on the side and run a metal plate? I’d still probably run a rubberized mat on the underside though “just-in-case”. The bug is coming along great!!
I received my Ragnar shirt in the mail. It looks great. Nice progress on the Beetle. I am looking forward to the next video. Thanks again! The car is awesome.
Keep doing a great job windows are a pain in the ass your getting things done that a lot of people wouldn't attempt to do by themselves or at all .😁💯👍
Hi Sarah. You're the cleanest mechanic I've ever seen. And I love that. I'm a retired wrench and I've seen many.
I love the smell of new carpet too!
Spider says "have at it Haas"
Sarah, I have an old wood working book from early in the 20th cent.. in the back is a list of different types of wood and their uses. Yea, several were listed with automotive as uses.
How are you planning to celebrate your 1/2 million subscribers milestone? Congrats in advance !!!
Sometimes we all do dumb things. Keep it going young lady, your doing great.
I think that’s the dirtiest I’ve ever seen Sarah get, taking out that transaxle.
"I'm coming for you". Great quote. Love your show. Great sense of humor.
"Stink Pipe Shields" Love it!
You are so flippin cute 😍, and be thankful that you live where you are, because here in North Pole, Alaska, we lose 7 minutes of daylight after the Summer Solstice all the way to the Winter Solstice, and then we gain 7 minutes again. So by the end of December we have about 2 hours of daylight. And on the Winter Solstice we have 1 hour and 45 minutes of daylight, so the Sun barely gets over the horizon and then goes right back down. But at the Summer Solstice, the Sun doesn't set. It goes down to just above the horizon and comes right back up again.
I've been here since 2008 and I'm still not used to it.
I love your video's they are both informative and educational mixed in with some quirky humour. You can accomplish more than I could, I'm impressed with your knowledge and skills. Thanks for sharing Sarah. 🙂👍
I have a funny Beetle heater story my buddy had a brand new 69 Beetle and we install the gas heater who in pirating I know yours is a big snow storm the next day we went over to his house at 2 in the afternoon to see how he's doing there's no snow on his beetle everything else is covered in about a foot of snow we went up to the car you couldn't touch the door handle it was red hot he said he's turned off the gas heater be turned on high guess he was too drunk all classic knobs and the gauge cluster plastic all melted and radio melted is hilarious have a great day you're amazing doing this car I'm too old to work on cars anymore but I still enjoy watching your videos cuz you're smart
No penguins? They flown south for the winter? Equinox changes must affect penguins too lol.. luv ya, Sarah!
I am pretty sure those articulated windows were an option, wow!
Holy crap! 500k! Celebrate!
My tea escaped my mouth when nature was inappropriate...
Love your sense of humour! 😆😅🤣
