  • Translation of the angelic/celestial alphabet present in Drakengard. Not fluent in Japanese so let me know if I made any mistakes. UPDATES BELOW:
    So about the red flag of the Empire, while it resembles a classical form of Etruscan, after a bit more research it also seems to match closely (but not 100%) to Southern Iberian script. Since Cathedral city (the capital of the Empire) is situated in the Iberian Peninsula it seems to be the most likely candidate. Either way neither script matches the flag perfectly so whatever it's saying (if it's saying anything at all) is still up in the air.
    The mysterious line in the Verdelet magic circle I couldn't find in the artbook appears in Magnitute Negative as a chaper heading, "Once the iron in the middle is changed, two things will entrust each other eternal". Since all the chapter headings of the book are quotes from the artbook, the line is probably still from there, I may have just missed it or it may have been cut from the final released version of the artbook.
    The circles that translate to "are you a fool?" might also be a reference to Magnitude Negative, as it's the final line Angelus speaks in said book.

    Caim and Angelus magic being "are you a fool ?" is both bittersweet and funny

      It's possible it might actually be a reference to the final line Angelus says before she dies in the DOD Novel Magnitude Negative, it seems like the novel was being written at the same time as the game was in production but I'm not certain.

      It could also be one aimed at the player, given how much the game chastises Caim/the player for engaging in slaughter after slaughter?

    Seriously, the fact that the sentences on Angelus' body are the ones that appear in the intro is just so cool

    Very good translation work. I did notice something on the script from the Watcher flag, though it doesn't appear to improve the (literal) translations at all; nevertheless, maybe it will help you with other bits.
    First, the image on the flag also appears on the start menu of the game itself and in the Chapter 1 prologue, though the carved stone texture doesn't lend itself to identifying the characters.
    The language you identified as Etruscan/Iberian is likely Elder Futhark or another related runic alphabet. This conclusion is made on the basis that, on the Watcher flag, the third and tenth characters on the top line are near exact matches for the perth (p) and dagaz (d) runes, and their shapes, especially the perth rune, don't have similar shape analogs in the Etruscan/Iberian alphabets; the perth rune is also clearly visible on the start menu image.
    The advantage of assuming it is the Elder Futhark or a related runic system is due to the system having multiple value meanings, since each have associated phonetic values (dagaz phonetically represents the D sound), literal meanings (dagaz has a literal meaning of day or dawn) and various symbolic or divinatory meanings (dagaz can symbolize a spiritual awakening or hope); the fact that the top and bottom lines share their first five characters with each other suggests there may be a longer 'phrase' being told on the flag, with the tail ends of each line being different.
    However it is important to note that the Futhark runic alphabets and the Etruscan/Iberian alphabets share many shapes and even some phonetic assignments due to a common typographical ancestry, so your original conclusion is still likely to be valid, and the sixth character on the top line doesn't appear to easily match any of the proposed alphabets, so it may be a rendering or transcription error.
    The script on Eris's storyboard is also likely to be a runic alphabet, and also appears to be using reversed or transposed characters, which have additional symbolic/divinatory meanings if it's assumed to be runic.

      Thanks for taking the time to write this, I have looked at runic languages as a possibility but my best guess at the moment is on the language being a mix of northern and southern Iberian script. In the DOD 3 world guide there is a flat image of the flag symbol showing all the characters, both the top and bottom row seem to be the same phrase though the bottom row isn't drawn very well, and there are 11 characters total with the last one (which can't be seen in this video) being another "dagaz" symbol.
      Looking at both the northern and southern Iberian scripts, I can find matches (or at least rough matches) for all the characters except the first, which might also have a match if it's reversed. The perth rune you mentioned has a rough match in the Iberian script as a character for the letter "m" and the dagaz rune has a match in southern Iberian as "ko/go". There's also the fact that the Empire is based in the Iberian Peninsula, which would make their use of the language appropriate though not for the time period they're using it in.
      All that said I know very little about languages and there seems to be a lot of runic alphabets with region specific characters, so I wouldn't be surprised to find out I'm wrong. There's also of course always the possibility the designers just looked up cool symbols on the internet and copied them down without much thought, but it's fun to discuss either way.

    This video is awesome. I actually found it because I’m trying to find a translation for the empire/watchers flag. You said it was maybe written in a classical form of Etruscan? That’s cool. Do you maybe have a vague idea of what it might say? Is there anything online anywhere you might know of? Now that I know I’m not the only one trying to figure out what it says, I wanna know even more lol.

    • @iamcaim
      @iamcaim  Před 2 lety

      After making this I decided it was probably a mix of northern and southern Iberian script, which would make sense since the Empire are based in the Iberian peninsula. I tried translating it in a newer video but as far as I can tell it's just random letters.

    Just as a tiny sidenote because I was recently looking through the art in the 10th anniversary books: there also seems to be a design for the writing on Caim's gauntlet and if taken literally it would read "eandsosteelord" so I believe it could either be a part of a sentence "(...) and so steel lord (...)", "(...)e and so steel or d(...)" or potentially something like "ends of steel lord", something to that effect. Not terribly noteworthy, but I thought it was interesting.
    Thank you for putting these videos together and being so thorough in placing each words for each use in-game. I wondered especially what each magic seals in Drakengard said and was intending on ripping the textures and taking a look myself and soon after I saw your video in my recommended lol

    have you realized that in route D the big black thing that spawns is not located in capital city? In the final cutscene when the earth is rotating the thing was suposed to be in iberian peninsula but it is instead in the middle of germany were the map says is the winter forest, is it an error of Taro and the team or the thing moved there? and why would it, i can't remember where Manah lost her mother but i don't think it was there

    • @iamcaim
      @iamcaim  Před 2 lety +6

      I hadn't noticed. I think it's probably just a mistake, there are already other inconsistencies like the size of the Mother Angel which can be twice the size depending on the cutscene. FMV's are made by specific team members and are expensive to replace so a small mistake like that could easily make it's way into the game, especially with how messy the development of Drakengard was. The final battle definitely takes place in the Iberian Peninsula so I can't think of another explanation.

    “The dragon falls from the tower of red thunder” during a fight in that world?!
    I KNEW IT! Time loop!
    The imperial city is a section of shinjuku. It’s in this game, it’s in 3, it’s what is cordoned off in the opening of Replicant…
    The nuke must have sent it back, or (my going theory) a chain reaction from the YoRHa plan (we know who started that…) or future action by 9S (How could he possibly ever be stable, mentally? His box/programming have been bugged since prototype! He can’t separate love/hate/sex/illing! HE KNEW SHE WAS 2E! A 9 model was most stable during the Boys story, and even the. He was fin with a 2 killing him).
    The machine war is designed to never end, the red eye disease adapts to anything with free will (soul), as long as maso is around (it’s only ever been reduced).
    Shinjuku is the beginning and end of the cycle of eternal misery.
