  • This video was originally intended to come out before the release of Nier: Replicant... So yeah it took me a minute. Lots of things happened between then and now and this is no where near the video I originally imagined but I freakin' did it.
Despite being as old as it is, my thoughts on this series have not changed that much from when I originally wrote the script in 2021.

I think that whole edginess is not mainly because of the early 2000s topical but because of a question Yoko Taro wanted to answer: What kind of people would go on a quest, killing thousands of people for their selfish reasons? Turns out: complete monsters. And everywhere they go, things just get worse.
This is also a reaction to games like Dynasty Warriors, which portraits the act of slaughtering entire kingdoms as something heroic. So basically, Drakengard is a game which takes its premise rather seriously and in consequence becomes a transgressive piece of video game art.

THIS! It’s clear the channel hasn’t played a Dynasty Warrior game before since his ground combat complaints were simply the mechanics of the DW genre, but it’s clear Yoko was making a realistic statement on the whole, “single warrior killing thousands of enemies”-video games which the DW franchise revels and glorifies.

Yeah also Taro really liked to write "edgy" stories like that not because it's cool, but because he's kind of messed up and is generally nihilistic and sees humans as monstrous selfish creatures.

There's also not just light novels, mangas, and theatre plays for the lore. There's the brochures for those theatre plays and even the concert that had the voice actors read the script for Automata's endings. They read two endings that were both directly after the events of Ending E of Automata. Yoko Taro will probably put lore in your breakfast if he could.

Drakengard is my favorite video game. I love the insane music, I love how irredeemable the characters are, I love the nonstop bitterness towards fantasy and hack and slash genres. I love the sheer GUMPTION in its existence. I love how it makes me question the enjoyment we get from slaughtering npcs in other games. It's a nasty look at fantasy tropes and at the concept of 'I just killed ten people imma have a seat and enjoy my morning' that other games have.
But then again I'm a person of poor morals who unironically list Ralph Bakshi as his favorite director so maybe the game just has a niche audience.

Thank god I was beginning to think that I was the only person who actually really liked the game. It's not the smoothest game, but stepping into Yoko Taro's take on dark fantasy immersed me as a fan of his since I was like 13. I just hope they make a Drakengard 4. I want to see Drakengard and Nier grow together and potentially branch further into new genres with new series tied together the same ways they tied Drakengard to Nier.

You know that thing called ludonarrative dissonance, where often they make the gameplay to fun and it clashes with the dark story? This game has ludonarrative resonance where the terrible gameplay enhances the terrible story.
Also you should definitely play drakengard 3, which I recommend way more than 1.

Ohhh yes. I remember playing this when I was about 12. Got all the endings. Broke my brain. Was the reason I moved away from gaming for a while. This was the first game I'd played that had anything resembling a new or interesting plotline. I was a completionist, so I figured all games were as difficult and repetitive as this, Super Mario World, or any arcade game. I found the notion of multiple endings depending on your gameplay and a game with such a unique, serious plotline interesting. I LOVED the music and the graphics compared to the PS1. When I heard Indigo Prophecy did something similar, I absolutely to play that shit. Same with Heavy Rain. I'd seen the Final Fantasy games, but we couldn't buy anything unless we rented it first and the FF games were out.

this was one of the absolute gems in my dads game collection. i would legit wake up early somedays just to take turns playing it with him eventually life happened and i ended up with way more time to play without him unfortunately but this game and all the chaos was freaking awesome and is always something im thankful he introduced me too especially since i apparently kept getting lost during my ending A routes and clearing the check marks for ending D and E by accident. it wasnt till i got older that i realized you werent supposed to find all the allies in your first run of the game and had to choose to go against the games plot for caim i just thought i was heading in the right direction and in a way i was just early lol and finding the new missions afterward felt great like i had more reasons to play

As others have mentioned, Drakengard was made to give a different perspective of the musou genre.
Bizarrely, one of the mechanics they put in that I actually ended up liking the idea of was the different weapons.
While you had trouble and impatience in getting all the weapons, I was curious as to what each magic attack, combo, etc looked like and felt to use. Sure, a lot of them were jank or did inadequate DPS, but there was an odd charm. Different designs, different colored effects and elemental visuals... even the weapon stories, as edgy as most of them are. Heck, the writing inspiration behind the characters Devola and Popola came from a weapon in Drakengard.
I think it was because of this "feeling" that the weapon collect-a-thon was carried over into all the other games -- but not with unique movesets and magic like this.
Now, grinding all the weapons to level 4? That's a beast. I did it, but... man, it was only passively while listening/watching other stuff. I wanted to compare each weapon in a tier list or something but... too much work. "Should You Play Drakengard?" No. "Should You Max Level All the Weapons in Drakengard?" *HECK NO.*

A quick correction of what the hearted guy was saying, as well as some other Neat Facts about the first game. You say that Ending D is the only one where the world is Properly Safe, but Ending A does likewise with Angelus becoming the new Goddess Seal. In fact, Drakengard 2 takes place after Ending A in the timeline. (With the plot of that game taking place 18 years after Drakengard E:A).
Where this gets Particularly Fucky is that canonically, Drakengard proper takes place in 1099 AD... With the exception of Ending E transporting Caim, Angelus, and the Grotesquerie Queen to _2003 AD._
In other words, according to the information in the _Drag-on Dragoon World Inside_ book released for the 10th anniversary, it's implied Nier:Replicant takes place in the Ending A timeline's Earth, after Caim from Ending E is blasted through time nearly a millennium into that timeline's future.
The Loop aspect comes in when you realize the Cathedral City from the climax of Drakengard? Is the same one from the distant prequel Drakengard 3. It manifested from the fucking ether in 856 AD, and that's where the timeline shifts from our Earth's.
Oh, and further Drakengard 1 Lore on those seeds of destruction? Dropped as part of the FF14 crossover with Automata.

There's a lot of nuance and story telling that goes into Yoko Taro's work, one of the biggest influences when making this game for him was the idea that people celebrate games when you rack up body counts like it doesn't make you a serial killer. Hence why there are several scenes where people call out Caim for his unending rage and willingness to kill without mercy in the name of saving his sister.
Leonard hated himself for what he recognized as an abhorrent attraction to children and was ashamed when he wasn't home to die with his brothers when the empire slaughtered his family. His character arc is feeling like he was a coward for not going through with his suicide, learning he can CHOOSE to be an honorable person and sacrifices himself while looking in the face of certain death while ignoring the little voice whispering in his ear that he is a waste of life and was too much of a coward to do anything in the most literal sense.
Arioch was horribly tragic and frankly I don't want to state what is implied to have happened to her, she was another victim of the empire's soulless campaign and her mind was broken beyond repair. She wasn't chill with her pact, she was taken advantage of by the spirits and the priest wanted to help her rather than let Caim just put her out of her misery.
And Seere made me genuinely sad, he didn't even know what his pact meant. His mother forced it upon him and he just wanted to tell his sister he loves her and he's sorry.
Ultimately there is a LOT to unpack in Drakengard and translation was a large issue, but Nier echoes it's ties to this game through the very foundation of what drove the plot of Drakengard 1. The White Chlorination virus is the same sickness as the one that infected the empire, the Red Eye Disease that enslaved them to the God of their world and allowed that same God to invade the modern world via time space break in ending E, leading to Nier. Even in Automata, the virus that causes the red glow is a call back and you can get Caim's weapons in every Nier game. Hell, Angeles' body is what created the Gestalt program in Nier.
Caim's story is tragic in the sense of a man who was willing to do anything, and became a monster to save his sister. Ultimately regretting his choices but having gone too far to stop. And in the end, he loses even when he wins. All he can do is live. Live and fight, fight so he can live. He represents humanity's will to go tooth and nail to the bitter end. But in the end all the blood on his hands meant nothing, because he couldn't even save the one person he had left. What's worse is her guilt for loving him romantically is why she died, when he rejected her gaze she realized he was ashamed of her feelings and she plunged a dagger in her heart. That line "Don't look at me" kills me every time I hear it.
Caim's story is like Angeles says in ending B:
"Caim there is no end for us. But still, you battle on..."
Drakengard 2 is non-canon but it explores more deeply what happens even when Caim won and Angeles became the new seal, and how his bitterness and hatred made him a ruthless hunter seeking Manah to fulfill his duty of keeping her from causing trouble again. He didn't know peace until Angeles' insanity of bearing the literal weight of the world on her shoulders was lifted with her death, and together they accepted death.
Drakengard is a product of it's time. It's low budget, and it's a grind. But it birthed a very beautiful dark fantasy scifi universe I love to explore. I wish these nuances weren't as cryptic in the beginning since a lot of the moments where people point out how Caim is going TOO FAR is in those little dialogue moments in missions and unlike in Nier the indirect story telling isn't as refined yet so if you want to be in Drakengard's world you do need to play it. Is it fun? No. Not really no. But it's an experience when you get to see how everything is connected in the end. Even in Drakengard 3, an android is built who's purpose is to witness all simultaneous events at once in all these games to guide the right branch of history. This stuff is nuts.
To sum up, the point of the game itself is in one line of the game, in the very ending of the game that leads to Nier.
"Caim lives hand in hand with good and evil... We too must adapt to this world of chaos..."
If this game has no reason to be played then I don't know what game people played. Despite it's flaws and it's darkness, I love Drakengard 1. No game in this franchise has matched it for me.
If it's not for you, I get it. But it'll always be art to me.

Fun video, but my one real problem is the it's too quiet. So I had to rise my volume up.
But the audio itself was super clean and smooth. With a nice presentation
I've been playing drakengard 1 since I think 2016ish. I haven't beat the game yet. Because I spend too much time grinding in it for fun... yes, I know that makes my an undiagnosed psychopath lol. I've gotten A through D done tho. I didn't like the aerial level, because I didn't know all the controls too.
So the game was originally supposed to be all aerial levels. But with the success of dynasty warriors, made the head of the project (Takamasa Shiba) add ground levels.
Aslo it was supposed to be on two disc, but with a small budget and time restriction. It got brought down to one disc. So, a lot of plot points had to be condensed.
There're four seals: the seal of forest, the seal of desert, the seal of ocean, and the seal 9f the goddesses. The seal of the goddesses is different. Instead of being bound to a place, it's bounded to a maiden. Who is then given the title of the goddesses.
The black dragon was the dragon the killed Caim's parents.
The gaint babies are called watchers (angels in the Japanese) so they're probably based on old renaissance art
Drakengard takes place in an alternate version of earth. You see Italy in Ending D. Also cathedral city has modern buildings in it.
So what probably the original plan for Drakengard was that it would be in a paradoxical time loop. So a man, a dragon, and a monster fall from the sky bringing magic to earth things happen which lead to Drakengard. Which end with a man, a dragon, and a monster going back in time and falling from the sky.
    Also pro tip.
bring seere with you, when fight magic reflecting enemies. His magic attack with his golem. Doesn't actually count as magic so it Doesn't trigger the enemies ability.
In the end I'm glad more people are talking about unironic one of my favorite feel good games. I have a problem and it's grinding exp in games lol. And I will get ending E soon.
I recommend I AM CAIM's channel for more interesting things about drakengard.
I really want Caim to get added to Nier Reincarnation.
Also looking forward to what your making nexts; good luck.

For context everything is pretty much all bad in Drakengard!
Your the strongest warrior - death machine monster - combat becomes simplified to be the most effective at beating enemies
Oh found a new weapon - turns out its really a personified grudge of some brutalized victim that wants to use you to get revenge
Oh you found a new party member - well they're a different kinda monster than you (if not worse)
You trying to save your sister - welp since everything is all bad she wants to bone you but since she can't she decides to make herself the seal so your forced to protect her
Made a dragon best friend - turns out said dragon friend is using you for its own ends (even becoming the seal is technically a way out of the pact since you break the bond of the pact and are then reborn as a younger version of yourself)
Fair point about the last min rhythm game I remember how much my head hurt trying to sync every shot though it does have a few deeper meanings, some even connects to another of the drakengard games
It's a strange but wonderful series

    1) It was always an issue for me... One wanted to play any new release game w/o any context of it? It`s like goting to cinema for Harry Potter 7 (for example). (Oh? There is a whole lifestory before? Who cares right?) And then after watching this movie you`ve decided to give a try to HP 1. It is much likely they wanted them to be watched in that order.
    2) 4:00 You are compearing game that releases at early middle of PS2 lifetime(September 11, 2003 - Drakengard release, March 4, 2000 PS2 release) with game that releases at it`s end (December 22, 2005 - Kingdom Hearts 2 release, November 11, 2006 PS3 release). Good job much objective.
    3) There was no amisions of dev team. Yoko came to Director`s place thanks to a random circumstances. At that time game itself had only good flying sym, whitch was main idea of game. But devs all were so inspired by Dynasty Warriors 2, so decided to implement a land fighting segments. Add here a financial problems which caused him to improvise, and thats where all multiple endings and repetativity of maps came from.
    4) About that "joke" ending, would`ve been really good if you read a Drakengard 2 development history. (I mean going step by step of game series memoirs)
P.s. My first idea when i knew about this whole series and spoiled to myself that humanity extinct because of (Replicant storyline)... I want to go from start. Dont care about gameplay, dont care about problems with emuls, dont care about how old game is. Gimme chronological order exprience, like I played it release by release. And then any mentioning of prev. games in games that came after makes me become :Soyjak: At that time all old games is just a legacy history, no matter of what. They all create foundation / base of games we know today. F.e Resident Evil series, Devil may cry series, Metal Gear, and so on. Nobody never want to play that old games in case there is no remaster or one care none about what world they belong to.

TL;DR if you're interested in it play Drakengard. but go in expecting a low budget PS2 title from a passionate studio that had heavy development issues and time constraints.
Drakengard is easily the greatest experience I've ever had. There's something about how it all comes together that's beautiful and deranged.
The music and combat lead into this hypnotic flow of murder. Weapon levels do not matter. Just use as many weapons as you can, the best part about the combat is how each weapon's magic is different.
    Don't use caim's sword it's WEAK
My main weapons were Fang's glaive (aka sunrise) it's level 1 damage is stronger than caim's sword
Hymer's finger(aka Iron will) it's genuinely the one weapon most agree is really fun
And Nobuyashi (aka Faith) is the weapon that be
A crazed manic dance that pulls you in and it is just the most immersed I've ever been in a game.
The story was just so good and beautiful and unique. I fully suggest reading the light novels as characters are introduced. It provides better insight to how the character's think and what their trauma is.
Caim a prince who potentially feels the guilt of having incestuous feeling for his sister while she's engaged to his best friend. It is also suggested via the canceled manga and the dragon's dialogue that He took his sister's chastity. He also witness the murder of his parents and the loss of his country in one night. He just wants to slaughter the empire. In truth however he is only running from his problems.
Prior to that trauma he was a kind but shy young man. He had had trouble dealing with all the high society life and wasn't confident. Then he found the sword and from dawn till dusk he'd practice. He became obsessed with it and eventually his body grew muscular as a result and in turn he had more confidence.
Furiae has incestuous feelings for her brother. It's fully stated. She also has feelings for inuart but they aren't as strong.
Inuart feels incompetent and lesser than Caim. Growing up he hated his freckle covered body and curly red hair. The only thing he had over Caim was his music.
These insecurities cause him to even form a pact with the same dragon that killed Caim's parents.
Leonard a repressed pedophile that became a hermit to avoid his sick urges he feels guilt for. When his brothers were forced to live him with he was suddenly in charge of 3 Young boys eventually he left to 'relieve' himself so he went so far that his brothers couldn't find him in the act. He saw the smoke and rushed over but it was too late.
Arioch is a mad elf who was a devoted housewife her husband and son were murdered in front of her totally shattering her. She devours children not because she doesn't want kids but because she thinks she's saving them from the empire and that she can give birth to them again. That they're safe in her womb.
Seere feels guilt for not stopping the abuse his sister suffered at the hands of their mother. He escaped into books and feels terrible for it.
*You really didn't do the story justice.*
The babies are literal angels and the giant pregnant lady is thought to be a corrupted Zero from Drakengard 3.
Manah posses the red eye disease the same disease that ends NieR's world. This disease was sent from the gods to end mankind.
The dragons are the true lords of the world chosen by the gods. Which is why it was susceptible to the disease. They are literally weapons of the gods.
It's really not edge for the sake of edge. The characters all have trauma that drives them forward.
The medieval times were also really terrible and that's why it's so fucked up.
It's pretty subtle too I didn't realize Leonard was a pedophile even after reading his novella. I just thought he was gay and after spending years alone only for his brothers to live with him made him well.
Arioch makes sense she's an elf they mate for life and live thousands of years. She was in her 20s when she saw her husband and child murdered. They aren't evolved for that.
The combat was not as bad as people say it is. It's mid genuinely fun if you use more than just Caim's weapon. The dragon dog fights are genuinely good. I wanted the lore so anytime a weapon reached level 4 I swapped it out. The difference in spells genuinely made it fun.
It's kind of a creature collector seeing how the weapons evolve and change was something I really liked. And the weapon stories are really really cool.
I went in expecting the worst thing I'd ever play and I was happily surprised.
Go in with low expectations and you'll be blown away. It was a 2003 PS2 game made on a very tight budget that has to be basically restarted at least once during development. They should've made something way worse.
E is not really a joke ending. It's weird but terrifying and only adds to the lovecraftian horror aspect.
The burn out feeling is very much intentional. Growing wings was originally called "tsukiru" or exhausted. This is something replicant/gestalt does as well. Ashes of dreams is actually very similar to growing wings as it is NieR replicant's version of growing wings in a sense. Similar lyrics
The funnest weapon Hymer's finger is also the only weapon you get for saving a life rather than just taking them. Which is just art.
I found Drakengard because NieR kept mentioning the red dragon. I like Drakengard better than replicant gestalt or automata. It is a unique and beautiful horror game.
Overall I can agree it's mid. I think the story is a masterpiece however.
I don't want a v1.22 remake for it I want a panzer Dragoon style remake. A near 1;1 remaster that polishes the rough edges without cutting as much as v1.22 did. Adding in things like character novellas when it would enhance the story and of course having it's OST.
It's OST is the best OST to ever grace gaming. Perfectly encapsulating the madness of the world.
Drakengard is a mad piece of art it's not meant to be fun all the time. It's a condemnation of war. It's a character piece, and God I could gush about this fucked up series for longer but I don't want to.

Playing drakengard before nier is about as necessary as studying the magna carta before reading about WW2. That said, I still find the world building of it all fascinating. Going from drakengard to where you end up in nier automata is such a fascinating arc for an in game universe, even if the drakengard itself is mid at best.

i have to agree with almost every gameplay opinion... except the aerial combat. it might be my emulation being slow and laggy, but MAN nothing about that experience felt fun or engaging. The ground combat was boring, but at least it didn't feel like wading though tar with inverted vertical controls. it's only one step above your standard early 2000s underwater level, and that's only because the magic attacks sometimes act as a screen clear.

I have this thing on console and believe me the lag is an in game feature, the slim is not powerful enough to make it run correctly

I mean yeah I tell people all the time that Drakengard isn't worth the trouble and is ridiculously expensive (you can barely even get it running through emulators either, least I couldn't) just to get what you can get out of a CZcams video. I think the ending at least is great and Yoko Taro is a good storyteller.
I mean he is a dingus, and I aspire to be that level of dingus myself, but still, I digress.
I'm a big fan of insane endings like this. My favorite anime is Neon Genesis Evangelion which was the inspiration for ending E.
Regardless my point is the game's writing is really good just the gameplay was bad. The people who made the game where originally gonna make it like Ace Combat but at the last second decided it'd be best to make it a hack and slash and it suffered horribly for it.

You've clearly never heard Yoko Taro talk about his reasons for making Drakengard then.

I am at around the 4 minute mark and I just have to say this since you mentioned it...
Kingdom Hearts...the gateway drug to Yoko Taro. (Because most of us played Automata first and I remember someone recommending this game with the tagline, "If you like KH combat you'll like this.")
Gonna watch the rest of the video now. Enjoying it thus far. Thanks for making it and God bless you.💜
EDIT: This is the first video about this game that actually makes me want to play this game. Not because you're advocating it but because you make it clear how insane it is that this game was a starting point and eventually led to a game people still praise now, a game that even has its own anime adaptation. All of that started here. Despite how wildly manic and insane the narrative sounds, the fact that its creators were given the opportunity to make games after this is fascinating to me. As someone who hasn't played Drakengard but knows a lot of what's happened in it, I feel it's incredible that enough people played it and got something meaningful out of it back in 2003 for someone to green-light it's expansion into what eventually became NieR and NieR Automata.
It sparks a lot of curiosity in me even though I'm certain the actual gameplay would drive me insane. XD lol This was a great video though. Enjoyed it! :)

This man was out on the streets handing out copies of this game begging people to play. Personally I use it as a coaster for my Diet Cokes, but I really admired his determination to educate people on this game. Maybe I'll give 2 a try as I hear they made mass improvements in it.

I know that you basically spent 40 minutes shit talking a game in the same series, but even if you didn't like drakengard 1 you should REALLY play drakengard 3 , it is much more similar to NieR in gameplay and story and has much more interesting characters and overall plot, and gameplay wise it's just a thousand times better, it is still simple and a bit braindead sometimes but can be quite engaging with parries and dodges, plus it has an amazing soundtrack done by NieR replicant and automata's composer Keiichi Okabe, which is incredible compared to the first games soundtrack ( it also has a lot of connections to NieR and arguably one of the most important characters in the series) so yea, I agree Drakengard 1 is pretty shit, but trust me when I say drakengard 3 is a lot closer to NieR quality

Japanese theater shows give me secondhand embarrassment. It's like a Broadway play; however, it is rewritten and directed by a nerdy kid who has no seen grass his entire life. That is the vibe I always get. For my sanity, I pretend they don't exist.

good stuff, you put alot of work into this! its greatly appreciated! Also i agree and I never understood games like this or Death stranding. A game which I absolutely hate. • @Gustav_Kuriga
      @Gustav_Kuriga Před 2 měsíci

That's literally the message, that games can create experiences that go beyond "fun". If all you want out of art is "fun", you have a really restrictive view of what art is.

    • @TheCristianalvarez
      @TheCristianalvarez Před 2 měsíci

@Gustav_Kuriga notice I didn't say "art" I said "games". Games are supposed to be fun, I don't care about your stupid message in your story. If the game is not fun, I will not play it. Because I only have a finite supply of money to spend on games, and I want to play a fun game. No one cares about your stupid "war bad" art house projects. Those are for snobs who think too highly of themselves.
