Just played this and being able to carry the journal into the observatory like you’d actually do in real life was amazing!
I played the original Myst with my Dad when I was a kid, and in Stoneship, the dark areas scared me quite a bit (especially since at the time we couldn't figure out the compass puzzle and we just ended up making it cut the lights off and sound the alarm, which freaked kid-me out lol) so honestly it is a bit disappointing to see the dark areas being toned down here, at least for me...
The lighting is the weakest part of this version. Everything is over lit and there’s too much haze.
Now if Cyan ever does Riven VR I will literally sell my organs just to get it and play it, I love that game SO MUCH. Let me go lay on the beach with the honking whale dinosaurs!!!!!!!

I think that there are two 10-year time skips in the Myst series, one between Riven & Myst III, and the second between Myst III & IV. In this game, I think Sirrus and Achenar have only been in Spire and Haven for a few months at most, but by the time of Myst IV, they have both been trapped for 20 years.
19:05 stoneship is probably a red dwarf star, meaning that the temperature is completely fine, but you will casually be receiving 4 times the safe level of radiation a year, so your nuclear Holocaust analogy isn't far off lol.
I tried playing the Myst games when I was a young teen. I was too stupid to solve any of the puzzles. This is my way of getting to experience the game it was meant to without having to use logic. I swear, I'm not an idiot, I just haven't dared to try playing again in fear of humiliation lol

October 11th , I believe ,IS in the original. Yeah, I could check, but I remember that clearly as it is the date of my father's birthday and then my youngest son's. ( not the solar/gregorian year of course, they're not from Gaillifrey)
The eye and the snake were as well; but I think the third symbol was originally the beetle. The dates definitely looked familiar to me.

The three dates that correspond with the constellations in the original Myst are the same. The only thing that’s random is the constellation code to raise the ship.
Damn. Looks like they went with the minimum-possible randomization possible. If it were me, I'd have a few extra marker switches (placed in lore friendly locations) and have alternative versions of notes too 😆
@@generrosity Oh, there are other puzzles that are randomized (just not everything). When I first played this, I had my old notes from the previous versions, so I was able to compare the puzzles of this version from the other versions.
wait really, I thought the third one was different here? I remember the year being 9791 and that number striking me as so weirdly out there.
@@trashpandaqc You’re right, the last one is different. The 7352 date is for the eye constellation (which is not part of the original version code). What I was trying to say is that the dates for the three constellations used in the original Myst are still the same here, they didn’t change them. The new dates are for the other constellations that didn’t get used in the original. So sorry if I confused you there and hopefully this makes more sense.

The way the sun is hitting the rocks and the way some clouds are, this kind of gives me Amateria vibes. Or possibly Haven.
If you feel comfortable enough with VR in this format, I can't recommend Half-Life: Alyx highly enough. It was life changing for me as a rare VR gamer.
I personally use a 24 hour clock and think it should be standard. AM/PM doesn't make any sense in the digital age.
It feels weird to show the clues in 12 hour format, but have you enter it in 24 though?
When you come across a clue my instincts sometimes make me take a screenshot without thinking about.

As far as the clouds go: I couldn't tell if they're moving or not, but they might just be circling in a sort of orbit in the sky, like the fast-moving sun in Uru (Teledhan?); I've seen older games use that trick to simulate moving clouds.

When it was searching for the last constellation I was like please don't be the beetle because that would really undermine randomizing the dates! (Leaf, snake, and beetle being the original game solution)

Maybe the wax for the candles went through the D'ni fusion-compounder, so it's actually 200 times denser than ordinary wax and can continue burning for months.

Stoneship is always my first as well. And probably my favorite in this game. Not 100% sure why, but there's just something about it. :)

Yeah, I noticed the invisible menu glitch on Linux, so I guess it's not a Linux Proton issue. I think I can click another button on my controllers and eventually get it back. Experiment a little and it might work. Definitely a glitch.
What VR set is Sven using? I can't get my Vive to start the game at all

The island is kinda small they should make it more bigger would be cool i know original is the same size but in new game they should do it more wider and bigger
Especially since Myst Island is canonically supposed to be bigger than it is shown in-game (about four times larger than we see, I believe).

You don't talk about it much in the videos but the interface looks very awkward. Perhaps the VR aspect compensates for this somewhat? I just recently played through Real Myst Masterpiece Edition and although this game looks better graphically, the interface in that game was great.
