The Myst lore is SO good, thanks for being familiar enough with it to draw attention to the bits in game that others may not notice, or realize their relevance to the overall story. As for VR, I wouldn't miss it. Mostly the mic quality from the headset picking up too many plosives, and the shaky cam. I enjoyed the playthrough regardless, the audio wasn't a deal breaker.

That’s why I have been an avid binger of every single one of his Myst playthroughs. His voice is so smooth and it is obvious he loves and knows a lot about this universe. I mean just the fact that he doesn’t rush anything but takes his time to pick up minute details in the environment.

The reason Atrus was keeping the prison linking books around is because he was trapped before Sirrus and Achinar used them. He kept them as booby traps for any thieves exploring his library, but didn't tell his sons about them.

By the Maker, there must be a remake of Riven, with the same love that's been given Myst. And may the ending never truly be written.
Riven is my favorite video game of all time. If it does get remade, it had better be every bit as beautiful and epic as the original version. I'm trepidatious of any newer version of the game losing some of the mood and atmosphere that makes the game so special.

Hoping for a Firmament LP. Just rewatched your Riven, Myst III and Obduction LP. Been a fan of your uploads for over 13 years.
Random does give you a random pattern, but it always 158. The pattern you got, I have also gotten, so it is clearly part of a set of codes, and not algorithmically generated. A part of me wishes that they had included voice lines to also allow for 3-4 different locations to add further time wasting for speed runners and discourage skipping the page collecting. Of all the random patterns I've gotten, the D'ni 2 is the only one that I've seen that is also a recognizable symbol.
There's an achievement for finishing the game in under two minutes. They're not trying to discourage speedruns at all.
Perhaps the reason why it’s always page 158 is because the only clue you’re given to it is from Sirrus and Achenar, and I’m sure if the voice actors had to record over 200 lines saying the same thing with different numbers, they’d have Cyan’s heads.

None of their stories entirely add up. According to Atrus, he was lured to D'ni and trapped first, leaving the brothers free on the island... at which point they must have simultaneously entered a different book to become trapped. Otherwise you'd expect one to see the other get trapped first and know not to do it themselves. Or if they did it in secret at different times, chances are whoever went second would look at both books and see that it was a trap.
But leaving that aside, after they did get trapped -- how did Atrus find out about it? He was stuck in D'ni, and his linking book shows the ceiling of the library so he couldn't see what went on inside. It's not surprising that he'd figure out his sons were behind it, and even that one would most likely get trapped, but not that both would. Although I suppose he could assume that both must be trapped if you were able to travel around with impunity. But there could have been a different reason for that.
Also, since he couldn't have done it afterwards, it means that Atrus must have taken the red and blue pages out and hidden them in the other Ages before they were trapped. Buuut, that means he must have hidden them in Sirrus and Achenar's rooms. Their secret rooms that revealed their past. Which means he went to D'ni while already knowing that they betrayed him. Why would he do that? And why did the trap books still work after having so many pages removed, since we know that only losing one page is enough to stop Atrus' Myst book from working?
And why would the brothers choose such an elaborate means to hide the white page, instead of just burning it? I suppose they might have wanted to be able to get their father out eventually, perhaps just to write more Ages for them to plunder. But why hide the page? One couldn't have been hiding it from the other, as they each had a piece of the instructions to get it back.
Story-wise, Myst is definitely a mess. The sequels do a much better job, assuming you can ignore the convenience of the puzzle gating (and nobody destroying the clues, or leaving something unlocked because they needed to use it themselves). Ignoring all of that, though, puzzle-wise it's still a lot of fun, even if it's all nonsense in the end.
@@Mirality I would note that, at least according to later Myst games, Sirrus wanted to learn Atrus's Art. (I'm not sure if Achenar did.) Also, I don't think they had any reasonable expectation that someone else would arrive on Myst to find the page... but, in that case, hiding it didn't make much sense anyway.
Also, the shared, ripped note doesn't make much sense. How are you going to forget the relatively simple mechanism for that chamber (when it was a chamber), or which switch has the chamber?
The whole matter with the pages really makes no sense; really, most of what happens on Myst is, canonically, artistic license taken to make a playable game.
In the case of the brothers' entrapment, there is at least some explanation in Myst IV. Achenar mentions a truce with Sirrus in one of his journals (presumably following a fight mentioned in another journal), so apparently each decided to link to one of Atrus's "dangerous," forbidden Ages while he thought the other brother was otherwise occupied. It's easily possible that the links were separated by a few hours, so each brother was unaware of the other's link.

As for your comment about how the Myst books in the other ages lead to the library, maybe that's why they got covers with the library on them in this version.
Originally, I suppose the making of the first book was made with a slightly different description, leading to being teleported to the dock.

Oooo nooot a big fan of Atrus being a 3D model of a person. I realize how bad it would look if he was just a video file playing in a 3D space, but the model is not the best looking.

Vr is immersion at a loss of everything else. The perfect spawn of the concurrent "mono-design" curse.
The extreme limitations in design and expressions of vr are frankly too steep a price.
Just think, half "game" of URU is literally impossible to have in VR...

On the topic of this game's ending, I replayed the DS port of the original just for fun while watching this playthrough (it's kind if a bad port but it was my first introduction to this franchise, so it has a tiny bit of nostalgic value to me), and I discovered they tacked on Rime at the end. The way they handled it due to limited space on he DS cartridge is that the moment you leave D'ni and head back to Myst, the graphics change to heavily downscaled and compressed screenshots from Real Myst and the Rime linking book is just shoved in your face, and the rest of the game from there is just screenshots from real myst set up to work in the old point and click style.

There are a couple things mentioned in this video that I'm fairly sure don't match canon information. First, I don't believe an Age needs to have a functioning Descriptive Book in order for Linking Books to that Age to function; after all, the Ronay on Garternay were evidently able to write Books back to Garternay, despite the fact that Garternay (where the Art was developed) wouldn't have had a Descriptive Book.
Second, I'm also pretty sure that the Linking Book that Atrus dropped into the Star Fissure was, in fact, the Descriptive Book. In "Myst: The Book of Atrus," Atrus reads the Descriptive Book to Myst prior to linking there (a Linking Book would not contain the full text describing an Age), and he recognizes the Book Catherine gives him at the Fissure as the Myst Book. As his opening monologue indicates, he expected the Book to be destroyed in the Fissure, but his brief time in the star field persuaded him that it was perfectly hospitable, and its survival was an accident. It is that Descriptive Book that we use at the beginning of the game, and it takes us to the original link-in point on the dock. All the other Linking Books to Myst take us to the library because that is where Atrus wrote those Books (we can see in realMyst that Rime's place of protection is the desk Atrus used when writing these Linking Books).
Third, and on a related note, not all Linking Books need to be written in the Age to which they lead; they can be written outside the Age by copying key lines of text from the Descriptive Book, though such Linking Books have the limitation of always leading to the original link-in spot. We see that such Books are possible in "Myst: The Book of D'ni," where the Maintainer Suits are described as using two miniature Linking Books (not the Descriptive Book), one to the Age being visited and one back to D'ni. Since the main purpose of the Maintainer Suits was to verify that new Ages were safe to visit, such Books had to exist, or the initial trip would be impossible.
So sven what i wanted to say about this vid is that in the end they still not changed that crappy computer generated brothers footages in linking books

Just found your content. I enjoyed though terribly failed at playing Myst. It was far too difficult of a game for me when I was growing up...Not sure I would do any better now without looking up guides. Would you ever play: 7th Guest? Which I think would lend itself well amongst your other playthroughs.

Would you possibly consider playing "Veil of Darkness" using the Roland MT-32? It's a criminally underrated game in my opinion, and we're still everyone who does a playthrough of it uses either ad-lib or sound blaster for the music -which unfortunately sounds awful.

I mean we have VR chat so it's not impossible to get a URU online in VR. Just make it not have any jumps or use the controller. Just imagine Riven in VR.

I don't know what it is, but you can look up the D'ni numbers online, and it's definitely not one of those.
First, there's the lack of extensions to the "box" shape at the corners.
Second, even if you ignored that, the shape only remotely resembles the D'ni number three, but it's still very far from that.

Okay, somehow, despite knowing that Sirrus and Achenar were trapped in these books, and that they were trapped in Spire and Haven, I never connected the two.
I didn't realize Myst IV was trying to match up the blank voids in Myst (I think that's what they were in the original, with no swirling colors) to these ages which actually had... stuff.
Or, I did realize that at the time, but forgot it, because it doesn't make any sense.

Rand is getting old, and they couldn’t really re-record him due to looking quite different.
Because of VR letting you freely look at every angle, I can see why they chose to strictly use the 3D models.

I wish they never made the characters into CGI...I'm sorry, but it looks terrible..it takes away that nostalgic feel from the rest of the game. At least the real actor characters options are available..
I guess if you plan to do it again on Firmament, perhaps get a lapel mic? I'm somewhat torn on this game. I don't have a VR headset, so as you say, I'm not experiencing this game in the way it was designed, but nonetheless, it bothers me that again, I get the feeling they got half way through recreating the game with TLC, and then went, "Okay, we need to ship this in a month, just whack some premade assets in here and there and it will be fine". The 3d humans are no where near good enough, the FMV scenes from 1993 are so much better it's laughable, and while there is a lot said about how the FMV wouldn't look right in VR, I mean, this solution looked horrible, we'd be better with cardboard cutout Atrus IMHO. That being said, there were also some beautiful visuals in the game as well, it's just a little disappointing that we still don't seem to have fully caught up to the original game in many aspects. (also, in other news, I see that RAWA isn't in the credits for this version, maybe they didn't get his likeness for the floor in Kaa'veer)
