So, this is an experiment. I realize not everyone will enjoy watching me play in VR, but I wanted to try this out. I've never tried this before, so bear with me as I try out different things with sound etc. over the course of these videos, and please let me know what works and what doesn't.
Like with the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, I just wanted to play the game, and give you my thoughts as I saw it for the first time. Since I wanted to play the game in VR, that's what you're getting. It was either this, or nothing at all, other than maybe a single video taking a quick look at the game.
I also wanted to see if doing this might be an option for other games in the future, like Firmament, which is after all supposed to be designed for VR. I figured it would be better to figure this out now, with a game I've already covered before, than with a big project like Firmament.
If you're not happy with this, I'm sorry, but there's always my original Let's Play of Myst Masterpiece Edition, which is much more thorough anyway: czcams.com/play/PL7C418C087D8998A9.html
I'm here for your content make what you want. If playing it makes you happy, your commentary will be that much more enjoyable.
I just like hearing you talk, so it’s all good to me :)
This sold me on getting a VR headset in about 5 minutes!! lol
Which VR system do you use?
@@yesmaam603 HTC Vive Pro
You could post a "Let's Play: Pong" and if it means I get that sweet Welcome Back, I'll be here every episode. This is a treat, sir.
Now I really want to know what voices he thinks up for the paddles. Here's my vote for a Pong LP! :D
i get the feeling that that would be more entertaining than a lot of things that get made now a day
Yes. The way he says that phrase always sounds kind and reassuring
Agreed :D

"...and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written."
That line always gives me chills. I've read the novels and so I get the context behind the words.
The VR graphics are stunning. I wish I could afford a VR machine.
If they do a VR remake of Myst III I will stay in Amateria for hours, Riven would also be amazing.
I would love to play Myst in a Holodeck.
God, I just wanna live until we invent real Holodecks.
@@SomeKindaSpy they almost have, with the Unreal Engine soundstage thing ILM is using for the Mandalorian and other stuff. Only difference is it needs to track your head instead of a camera and somehow display stereographically... no big deal ;)
Tea, Earl Grey, hot would also be nice :)
Big big big same. MYST III and Amateria left the biggest impact on me of all the places of all MYST games. To feel myself actually there.. yeah, sign me up! :D
The Starry Expanse 3D remake of Riven will support VR. Pretty excited about that endeavour.
Your channel has become intertwined with Myst nostalgia for me. Glad you’re embarking on this LP series!
Now this brings back memories, I remember when I was a little kid and my uncle gave a Nintendo DS port of this game, after being unable to figure out how to play it, I looked it up on CZcams, and who did I find, none other than you. You alone are the reason I've purchased every game in the myst series that is available digitally, minus this version of the original game, as I had no idea there was a VR version. You sir are a childhood hero in my eyes, it's so awesome to see you play Myst again.
Honestly, I still think the original Myst looks better. The island seemed bigger somehow, and the "forest" here seems far too sparse (though, to be fair, the forest in the original Myst was ridiculously dense).
Dilandau3000! Nice to see you're still around.
I've loved your MYST playthroughs for years.
You really got me into the franchise!
Fantastic to see you back, and with Myst no less the game that introduced me to your excellent channel, look forward to the future episodes
I like this format a lot. It is great to see you do a Let’s Play which is not fully planned out once in a while because it means we get to hear a bit more personal insights/anecdotes from you off-the-cuff. If your usual format is the viewer sitting around a storyteller, this is more like having a beer with friends 🙂
This is such a blast to see your reaction even after watching all your LPs of this. The VR really adds a grand element. I hope you continue and I cannot wait to see what is next !
Cant get enough of this channel. Ive been a fan for years and Im so glad youre doing this edition. Looking forward to more of this series.
every time you reached out and hit your mic I laughed so hard I had to rewind
We're professionals here at the Guild of Let's Players! You can't tell, but I assure you we are!
It turns out Cyan did add an option for upscaled original prison book videos in a recent patch.
I wish Cyan had filmed new video sequences and cast Brian Wrench and Guy Sprung as the brothers. This would have been a cool nod to Myst IV: Revelation and the broader non-Rand/Robyn continuity.
My thoughts exactly. Especially since Sirrus here is modeled after the Myst 4 actor.
whoa back to myst, i love this. I really need to buy this series. I played it so much when i was a kid.
I can't believe I just now got the notification for this. 100% here for any and all Myst content.
Hey Sven I'm pretty sure a few days ago (from when I write this of course) Cyan said something about adding in an option to switch it to the original videos if you want (with Rand and Robyn's acting)! So idk if it was a patch or something or if you are able to use it with your particular version, or whatever.
I really like the original videos as well, because how you see Rand and Robyn's facial expressions in their (admittedly probably amateur and maybe slightly over-the-top at times) acting actually really enhanced the mystery for me as a kid, because it made them both feel strange in different ways, and hard to read their intentions, and thus made it harder to decide/determine if I could trust them or not.
Yes, that option was added as a patch last week. I will have it in the final two videos only. The joys of playing a game right after launch. :)
So excited to see this. I *cried* a little when I was first on the dock on Oculus and I know that's not even as good (visually) as PC. Just Being There is...my heart. I was hoping you'd both play this version and do vids of it.
I know, seeing this in VR is so amazing, it's hard to convey to people who've only seen it on a screen. :)
Me too! I first played Myst when I was 8, it's always been one of my favorite games. I remember playing around with the star projector, putting in my birthday and whatnot, and now I have two kids and was doing the same with their birthdays. Had to remind myself not to cry in the headset, haha
@@sidewaysplatypus15 That's so awesome! I first played when I was 10. :) My dad got it for my birthday on the basis I loved games and books, one of the best gifts I've ever gotten. Hope your kids also love it.
@@Dilandau3000 I know it doesn't make for amazing video but also standing in the library "holding" one of the journals, my heart skipped a beat I'm pretty sure.
It really is hard to convey, but feeling like you're actually there is so amazing. And I'm so glad that others feel the same. :)
When I heard a new Myst was coming out, I was hoping you would do a Let's Play again. And here you are! I'm so excited to experience this with the best Myst player out there!
Yeeessss I have loved every myst let's play you have made!! This is such a treat💞
Just so happy to share your 1st experience of Myst VR. So glad you did this. Been an avid watcher of all your Let's Play's. Very nostalgic for me as I played all the Myst games with my brother back in the day. Thank you for this.
I thought the VR was kindof weird gimmicky for this...
Then I thought the VR was kinda neat, maybe some fun perspective walking around some places...
Then I thought it was pretty cool that you could sortof feel around the Myst linking book, compare it to your physical one...
Then I BLEW UP because getting to reach out and touch a linking panel is the COOLEST FREAKING THING *incoherent excited noises* eeeeeee wowowow I hadn't even considered that part but that one thing is entirely 100% worth it :'D
Anyway now I have to rewind the video a bit because I was squealing excitedly over it :'D Thanks lots for your LPs!
7:00 who knew a book would show me just how immersive VR is, god I can see the weight in your hands as it were.
Love the new videos of the bros, especially with the mullet they put on Achenar.
Wow! Thank you for uploading this incredible game in VR. I have been a Myst fan since its inception and played all the Myst games several times over. The magic, wonder and awe the Myst games bring are always new doesn't matter how many times I played the games. Imagine URU in VR!
URU actually had built-in support for nVidia 3D shutter glasses. It is actually possible to make that mode work on a modern VR headset to get real stereoscopic 3D support.
The problem is there is no support for VR controllers and no support for head tracking. It is possible to remap head movements to mouse movements which works reasonably well but mapping other inputs to a VR controller can get a bit tricky.
The software drivers required to make this happen can be a bit finicky but it is doable and I got it working reasonably well a couple of years ago. For the most part being able to actually see the ages of URU in full stereoscopic 3D was amazing.
There are actually a fair number of games that came out around the early to mid 2000s that have stereoscopic support that can be modified to work in VR. NVidia in particular was really pushing game developers to support their glasses at that time.
I tried watching this VR playthrough in VR and I made it ten minutes before I nearly threw up 😂 this version of the game is gorgeous. These are by far the best graphics I've seen with Myst
I kind of grew up on this game as well as the Journeyman Project trilogy. This looks amazing and I really wish a VR version of the Journeyman Project would ever be available. Seems like so many of these point and click adventures could find new life with VR.
It's so nice to have your videos on a regualr basis. Your calm intonation and unhurried progress through the game, taking time to admire the views and interesting insights make your lets plays a one of a kind experience. Thank you for finding time to make these videos, Sven! And, as per usual, I'll be expecting to hear you... in the next video :)
Sven is back with a slightly different Myst Let's Play!? My fingers pressed play before my mind had even processed it.
Also, for future reference, I think I speak for many here when I say that we are interested in watching whatever you're interested in making LPs of. 😊
This is my favorite Myst channel and the VR is fantastic. Thanks so much for posting it.
I think doing a Let's Play in VR is a very cool idea. Personally I am very much looking forward to seeing the game in this format! Should be interesting.
I recently fell in love with VR and I really enjoyed watching you check this out. :) I hope and look forward to seeing how you adapt and grow in your VR experiences :D
My old friend it’s good to see you again in VR it’s been a long time
Since before 2016
Oh my gosh I somehow completely missed this Myst rerelease, those games were my childhood. So excited to watch you play this
THIS IS SO COOL
One of the most impactful and insightful let's players for me, I have been waiting for this :D
so incredibly good to see you back! i’m excited for this style of LP. of course, i love your more polished ones that are overflowing with lore, but there’s something very organic about getting your first hand reactions with this style.
it’s also a relief to know from some other comments that you can switch the sirrus/achenar/atrus clips back to the original. i suppose i understand why cyan switched to cgi models but oh my god. they’re atrocious
This is actually amazing even just watching
Oh I am just so excited for this series :) I've watched all your MYST playthroughs and I love all the insight you've provided. It must be stunning to actually feel like you are on the island itself. Looking forward to all the episodes!
Good lord those new 3D-models of characters are bad though, lol. I'm glad they're re-adding old videos, I feel that it was a very special touch for Cyan's games to have real people in the game.
I specifically waited for you to play this. I just couldn't bring myself to revisit this with anyone else
I played the original Myst while I was on vacation one of these days I need to record an LP of it but I am dreading that musical puzzle.
All you have to do is count the number of keys to each note on the piano
All you have to do is count the number of keys to each note on the piano
Awesome to see your videos again! I watched your videos about the Myst series up to the point where I hadn't played passed. 🤫 I'll get to those.
Love seeing your take on the VR version.
I personally didn't mind the game models of the characters, though I will admit Achenar was hit the hardest by the change. Between the stiff animation and the re-recorded dialogue, it doesn't hold a candle to the insanity of his live-action performance.
This is really, really cool, man. Love your LPs. I’ve watched your Myst and Riven many times. This is a great new wrinkle. Keep it going!
I'm just happy to see a new LP from you Sven
I agree the people look horrible in 3D. They could've made a contest and had cosplayers and impressionists to get a real person version of the videos. Have the people do green screen and wa la. They could've done so much better. And I could barely hear the voices when they spoke.
An option to use the original videos was added in a recent patch, for everything except the end of the game. It looks SOOO much better. The upscaled videos look surprisingly good, actually.
@@Dilandau3000 yay!
I'm so excited Dilandau gets to cover Myst again. ❤

I have watched all your myst LPs and I can't wait to see what happens with this Playthrough. This is going to be fun and interesting. I look forward to more if you decide to continue playing.
Holy hell, I remember watching you play Riven. This will be great!
This is so cool and I'm always so happy to see one of your videos pop up in my notifications ❤ Your Myst series of Let's Plays are my favorites!!
This is a pleasant surprise to come home to from work Sven! I enjoyed playing Myst already, so I can have this "VR" experience. One I can't do with my lack of headset.
Glad to see you hopping on this release.
I like it. With some good settings VR videos look like someone put a GoPro on their head. I'll definitely watch this and i'd watch other VR LPs as well.
11:11 OMG we aren't the height of the railing!! In the OG it made me think the stranger was really short.
I was for sure hoping you would do a Let's Play of this new version of Myst....though maybe not in VR. But it's not too distracting so count me in for the rest of the Let's Play!
Watching this parallel to your original Myst Let's Play. They say of the Acropolis where the Parthenon is...
AIYYO!!! SVEN IS BACK WITH SOME MYST!!!🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Just curious what VR headset you're using for your setup? I've been thinking about getting one for a while to play this, Half Life: Alyx, and Firmament when it arrives.
I have an HTC Vive Pro, though I've swapped the standard Vive controllers with Valve Index controllers.
playing games in VR is one of the coolest and most unique way of experiencing video games, hope you enjoy it!
If I ever bought VR, it would be likely to play this. Until that day, I come to watch the master at work.
Shorah! Well i must say i was expecting that from my favorite explorer of Myst universe :)
thanks so much for the series, I feel like home watching Myst lets plays!
I was having Myst cravings...thank you for posting this! Lol. This is so cool!! Even though we as a viewer are not experiencing the same thing as actually playing it, it's still awesome. Let me just pick up my jaw off the floor...😆
So, I'll see u...in the next video!
Can't wait to see you do Firmament!
"speaking of audio" *hots microphone
well that works
So very thrilled and delighted to see this! I was wondering what your thoughts on this were!
I was really hoping you’d do a let’s play if this!
I beat it flat screen and it was so good. The randomized puzzles kept me from feeling to familiar. Hope you have a good time.
Interesting to see this with you, honestly would never try VR myself because of medical reasons so its good to get a perspective of how its life even though I am not doing it myself.
Welcome Back!!!
So I was really hoping that you would play this edition. So in that I am glad that you are doing it. I am not sure about my ability to watch it, mostly due to the constant motion.
So, my honest opinion, it is fine for this but I wouldn't be able to enjoy something like Firmament with it.
That's fair. It's honestly pretty unlikely I'll do the Let's Play of Firmament like this, unless it turns out the gameplay is hugely different or something.
If you're excited to play the game, I'm excited to be here. You don't need to make excuses imo, this is your channel, your rules. I'm here to have fun, you're here to have fun :)
So glad you're back with this. Not sure if it's my inner ears, or what, but this is "seasick-city" for me. Not sure if there's a way to smooth out the head motion. Love your stuff.
I don’t like the exterior of the Library or the Planetarium in this version. Atrus isn't the type to make such rough joints between stone blocks, he's the type who would make sure everything fits and is sanded smooth. Cyan seems to be under the impression that "realism" means "ramshackle." (We see this on Hunrath, too, where floorboards have wide, uneven gaps between them, despite the fact that the people were clearly capable of building with a higher level of finish.)
wow those remakes of the brothers monologues are kinda bad I agree. I feel kinda the same (maybe not quite as much) with the remakes of the original live acting for Riven. The originals were so good, they really nailed it. I know both Rand and Robyn weren't actors and were reluctant or didn't like doing it but they really did an amazing job.
You know, bumping Your hand into the microphone when trying to flip a marker switch added a bit of realism to the action.
Hi Sven, I really enjoyed your video of Myst VR. I like the full 3d views of Myst Island, and the enhanced graphics, especially the water. I played Myst many moons ago, and I understand the story. So, I don't need further explanation of the story. But I look forward to your videos of the 3d graphics of Myst and the adjoining Books. Cheers from Canada.
Thank you Sven!
I don't know if the option was there when you started this, but the ability to use the original FMVs was added within like, a month of release.
EDIT: Yes, they were added ten days prior to you starting this.
they should have just brought back the Myst 4 actors for sirus and achanar and re-recorded those scenes. those cg faces are super creepy...
This is awesome! Myst might be up there for having the most remakes ever haha. This is what, the 4th or 5th?
Great to see you take on this remake Sven! I just beat it in 2D myself which got me into rewatching all of your old videos. Personally, already in the intro cutscene, I am not a fan of how they changed it to have a controlable camera, and how it looks like the Myst book is falling sideways. One of the cool details in the original, to me, was the book falling in tandrum with the credits, as they appeared. And, as many have pointed out on other forums, not a fan of how you don't get a fullscreen fly by of the age you are traveling to, especially since the linking panels, at least in 2D, since the books are now nailed down for added realism, are very small.
Sweet. I can get used to this walkaround with a new appearance. :) I'll definitely be watching.
Hey! Love to watch this series!
Holy crap the graphics are amazing.
Well, except the characters. They look like mobile game ads.
@@meddlerfilms2585 Yeah, overall i love this remake, but not the new cgi characters.
There's a million Myst redos (exaggeration), but why nothing for Riven? Riven VR would be amazing!
Much like ME, it'd probably be too much trouble to do all the games. Especially since there are six games.
I would have preferred the lower-resolution original videos to being set off on my nostalgic puzzle quest by Hank Hill
Didn't know you could do this in VR. Well let's see...
Hi and 'welcome back', I was wondering what VR set have you got? I have a Oculus but it is very old but still works, The last time i watched your channel you was playing Obduction. Its great to here your voice again!
So, I just found out that in the menu function, there's an option where you can choose to have the original 1993 live-action versions of the brothers from the original version of MYST and the 2000 live-action version of Atrus from realMYST or the CGI versions of all three off them, and I think it can work for VR as well to have the brothers and Atrus in their live-action sequence, since Cyan added this function a few days ago
Soon to be twin telemetry joy sticks and a cellphone head set
Wow!
Myst gas been ported like 6/7 times, but Riven no :(
