MYST 1993-2021 Comparison: Original vs Remaster & Remakes

  • In this video I compare the latest version of Myst with the original game from 1993 and the other remasters/remakes. The current Myst version was exclusively available for Oculus VR systems in December 2020, now it has been released for other VR systems and can also be played without VR. Myst 2020/2021 uses the Unreal engine, while the last remake from 2014 ("realMyst Masterpiece Edition") uses the Unity engine, so again an interesting comparison. I look particularly at the graphics, sound and movement styles in the following five games: Myst (1993), Myst Masterpiece Edition (1999), realMyst (2000), realMyst Masterpiece Edition (2014) and Myst (2020/2021). Which version do you like best?

Much as I like to see realistic graphics, I feel the 2021 version loses something in translation when it uses that grundgy brown color shading and fog. One of the appeals of Myst for me was the surreal vibrance of the world, like exploring a dreamscape. The newest one feels more like a Fallout NV mod than Myst.

as it always will be, the unreal bad engine 4 remake gutters the original art style and changes it for a more generic modern look whit cheap effects and tacked on post processing effecs, completely killing the original graphics intent. Even just looking at the ship sink, where you can't even fuking see the ship inside makes it clear that something went really wrong whit the remake process

While the latest remake has better graphics, I think the other remake from 2014 does the best job of bringing the original to modern graphics while still retaining the art/atmosphere of the original.
Plus, it's much cheaper than MYST 2020/21, so I think I'll go with the 2014 version for my first time ever to play Myst.

It seems to be the case with a lot of remakes; the newer engines seem to have a bias for brighter and hazier visuals. I actually think the 2014 edition looks pretty good, that one passed me by unfortunately. I remember being very unimpressed with the predecessor realMYST. At that time anything not pre-rendered just looked like a downgrade to me. It just needed more time for technology to catch up and be able to provide the same fidelity in real time 3D.

I must say its disappointing to see that in the new release they appear to have replaced the real recording of actors with a new 3d render. I can understand the resolution of the old recordings would not be great but it would have still worked just fine in the small window. Especially when its expected that the image be fuzzy in accordance with the lore.

I feel like every time they remake Myst they tried to go more and more toward photorealism as much as was technically possible at the time - this time however they seem to go for a more "Pixar" or animated movie look. I love the details in the newest version, but the 3D faces and the yellow light on the island are not true to the original game. If they fixed those two things, we would have a winner in the graphics department. However, the 1993 version holds a special place in my heart as I remember playing this game with my dad back then. Great memories.
Edit: also, there was something really great about the old way of moving around, the lower res graphics, and only seeing one picture at a time. You kind of had to use your imagination a lot more to fill out the “blanks” whereas the new 3D versions with free movements makes the whole setting less interesting and less mysterious to me and not much imagination is required from the player.

Agree with all those points. - some of the mystery is gone, - but that clicky motion makes my brain hurt, - even a few seconds & I had to close my eyes, - I found it quite easy to lose my bearings playing the original. - There is supposedly a mod that replaces the new videos with the original - another mod that fixes the colour would be great. - I would much prefer a pre-rendered point & click game, with smooth transitions between frames. - but imagine what level of detail could be rendered these days.

I downloaded the 2021 version expecting to be the original with higher resolution images, and I was blown away to see the game being rendered in real time with free movement! I always felt fascinated by the original, but at same time, the way you move, it was always off putting to me, so I never really played until the end, but it was always on my radar to play it and finish for good. And I was blown away again with your video, never imagined the real time 3d was already achieved in a 2000 version, woah! And at same time, is very strange that so many real time 3d remakes were made, 2000, 2014, 2021...! I feel like I have to finish all the versions just to know each one and drawn comparisons! For now, I'm loving the 2021 version, it has updated graphics, but still feel a product of it's time (which is a good thing on my book!). So I recently bought the 2014 RealMyst MPE as it was on special offer and thoroughly enjoyed playing it with the updated graphics. I never completed the original back in 1993 as my older brother was the owner of the game and console so I as the little brother was demoted to "watching" status. I heard of the 2020/21 version and felt upset that maybe I should have waited for this but now after seeing this very informative video I know I made the right choice! I think the 2014 version is how the game was imagined back in 93 but back then they didn't have the capabilities to pull it off.. It's an absolute classic game and with the improved visuals and sounds its perfect! Thanks for the review it is much appreciated!

That being said, nearly every tweak, change, alteration, change of movement and even improvisation made in Myst 2021 feels like the right choices. It's a weird sensation. Somehow they made a different game that still feels exactly like Myst '93 in what it does to my soul.

That was the most striking to me was 1999 to 2000. Obviously, 2000 to 2014 saw the greatest leap, but that's to be expected. I don't know it just seemed like 2000's version of Myst was a graphical step down (in some spots) from 1999. Like the panning shot of the pillars and the buildings look better to me in 1993/1999 with the pillar's marble texturing versus the texturing in 2000. Or puzzle hunt in this case as you cannot be sure if you are looking at a puzzle or a stage prop. Realism of 2021 only exacerbates the issue. Node movement is a nice compromise for first playthrough while free-roam results in some nice vistas off the beaten path.

The 1993 version was so painful to get through. The low resolution made it harder to understand things like the clues from the page videos, and the cause-and-effect relationships were often harder to pick up on than they were probably intended to be. It looks like future versions have improved that. When we first got it, my dad and I weren't even sure if it was a game that was intended to be beaten. We thought maybe it was just a pretty demonstration of what quicktime/hypercard could do. It wasn't until Myst III: Exile that the plot was straightforward from the beginning. Same here. It will still be difficult but the freedom of movement you get in the 2021 version looks less boring and clearer. I’ll get the 2021 version as soon as I try to ply the original on Steam. At least if that is possible.

I completed the original, but a couple times I had to look in the book to get unstuck. I remember mapping out the underground vehicle part, that won’t happen in video games ever again.
The 2014 version looks truest to the original, but the 2021 version has some great stuff too. Thanks for the memories!

I remember thinking these graphics were amazing in 1993. I later bought realMYST and thought it was a step backwards. The new 2020/2021 version looks good.

Wow, I have them all! I wasn't aware of that fact. The 2021 version is awesome as well. (Maybe despite the animated faces, they are really terrible). I love the MYST series since RIVEN in 1997.

I think I follow the same thoughts as a lot of others. The 2020 version looks great, but it doesn't tickle that nostalgia itch. The 2014 version I think looks great and still looks just like Myst as I remember it.

The "nodes" from the original are special to me. Each is its own slightly unique environment, even if they're supposedly only a few feet apart. It's not necessarily a positive thing that the transitions are smooth. Instead of discovering each new special place with its own special perspective, we discover "the island" as a whole, which makes the island feel smaller, less intricate... to me anyway.

Ι played the atari jaguar CD version back in 1998. The game will always have a special place in my heart. The immersion was unbelievable. Can't wait to play the new remake!

Currently playing realMyst (2014) on PC, and the 2021 version on VR. I absolutely love the PC version (I honestly love the original as well), but the VR is just stunning, I could literally put on that thing to go to Myst and simply relax. There are also some smart improvements in the mechanics, like the fact that you can carry several pages at the same time.

I remember seeing realMyst (2000) in stores and noting that the specs were VERY much higher than the family PC we had at the time. And 2014's node-by-node movement is underrated, fight me. (at least apparently you can still freelook regardless of movement mode)

It's amazing that each version have its own charmes. Since 2000 it's a real more modern version

I've never played MYST but based on these comparisons, the 2014 seems like the one to play, it's basically the closest you get to the original but modernized.

the 2021 version has the original developers of the 1993 version working on it. supported by cyan. they put a lot work into the 2021 version (even supports Virtual reality. 4:41 in my opinion shows how far the tech has advanced). they said to think of the 2021 version more of a re-imigining

@@legendp2011 hmmmmm the plot thickens. I guess we get the best of both worlds, a remake that's basically genuine authentic remaster, and a remake by the original team.

realMyst is the one i will love forever, there is just something special in that slightly gloomy atmosphere of not-too-much-post-processing. New one looks nice, but 3d brothers...

I haven't played Myst, but having played other 3d games realMYST 2000 hits a good note for its age. Comparing to Morrowind 2002, the textures are smoother and colours more vibrant. I think it still has well balanced saturation, it doesn't have the overpowering HDR look of 2014 and 2021

I'm waiting to get a VR headset (hopefully in the near future) to play the new one. Just based on your video, I think the 2014 looks better than the 2021 version. Maybe they were trying to go for photorealistic color tones but it does seem kind of bland. I am curious to see the few changes they made for 2021. Like others here, the 1993 version will always be my favorite for nostalgic reasons. My friend and I would play at his place until 2-3 am on the weekends. It was such a groundbreaking game at the time. I remember I had to upgrade my desktop because my 386 just couldn't run it. I built a 486 system just for the game but my friend just got the "new" Pentium and it ran so much smoother.

I far and away prefer the realMyst 2000 version. Sure it's older and is iffy when running on newer systems and is prone to crashes in the Rime age, but man the atmosphere was so good. And there are day/night cycles in EVERY age, unlike the 2014 remaster and 2021 which has no day/night cycles at all. I used to visit Stoneship and just sit there at the telescope location watching the lightning in the distance during the storm until the sun came up.
