This is a blind playthrough of Myst (2021), the Myst remake by Cyan Worlds. In episode 1, we start our journey by arriving on the island of Myst, exploring, and starting to learn more about the island’s history. I intend to make this a full let’s play Myst (2021) series. I played the original Myst from 1993 and fell in love with the story, world-building, and puzzles. I can’t wait to see how the Myst remake has reimagined the world, explore the secrets of Myst island and the other worlds, and unravel the mysterious history of Myst and its prior inhabitants. Since the game has been remade completely in Unreal engine (the original was a point-and-click adventure), I am very excited. A full playthrough of Myst (2021) is very exciting for me and will focus on exploring the environment, finding snippets of lore, and enjoying the classic puzzles. The old-school Myst gameplay is always compelling and I can’t wait to play more of it. So join me, and let’s play Myst (2021)!
In Myst (and Myst (2021)), we find ourselves transported to the Island of Myst and must piece together the story from scattered clues and puzzles. The world is full of exploration, wonderful sights, and imaginative touches. Myst - both the game and the island - are exceptional, and I can’t wait for the full playthrough.
In Episode 1 of the Myst (2021) blind playthrough, we arrive on the island and must begin solving the puzzles. In this adventure game - the old-school puzzle and adventure game from 1993 - almost everything relates to a puzzle. I’m very curious to see where things go from here, particularly because I don’t exactly remember every puzzle in Myst. So get ready for some interesting times as we play Myst (2021) together!

Welcome to Myst: a starkly beautiful island, eerily tinged with mystery and shrouded in intrigue.
Journey to Myst Island and other stunning, long dormant locations - called “Ages”- and begin to unravel the mystery you have been thrust into. As you learn what happened on the island, you will find that you are playing a key role in an epic story whose ending has not yet been written. Explore deeper connections in these stunning and surreal Ages, uncover a story of ruthless family betrayal, and make choices that will affect both you, and the world of Myst itself.
Cyan, the indie studio that created the beloved classic, has reimagined Myst.
Built from the ground up to play both in VR as well as traditional flatscreen displays, Myst is teeming with new art, new sound, re-imagined interactions, and even optional puzzle randomization. Finally... the highly anticipated Myst 2D/VR experience has arrived!
Now you can explore the Ages of Myst in a new dimension!
Designed and built from the ground up in Unreal Engine, this newly-reimagined version of Myst includes fresh takes on the visuals in every area in the game. Additionally, Myst includes many “comfort level” features for both new and experienced VR users, including the option to enable smooth or snap turning, quick travel up stairs and ladders, vertical height quantization, and more!

Show of hands: who played the original Myst (the one on CD)? Doesn't matter if you didn't play it at release -- although, definitely shoutout if you were there at the beginning!
I used to watch my mum play. It was probably around 98.
I played the original with my dad when it came out, and it was so cool
used to watch my mom play all the myst games when I was younger and I've played them all a couple years ago myself as well
I literally learned to install a CD-ROM drive to play this game
🖐🏻👋🏻🤚🏻🙌🏻
Not QUITE from the beginning, my buddy got me into it prolly a few months or half a year after release
Was anyone else scared of this game when you were a kid? Lol I've always loved the Myst games but I played them for the first time when I was in elementary school and thought they were so creepy, yet I couldn't get enough of them. I remember having this irrational fear that Sirrus knew I wasn't planning to free him and kept thinking he would somehow show up in one of the ages and trap me there. I would click to check behind me periodically while playing, and I always jumped at the sounds since the game was mostly silent and I was so on edge. My parents would look at what I was doing and have no idea why I seemed so spooked. I shared a bunk bed with my older sister and whenever we heard weird sounds at night, she would mess with me and tell me it was Sirrus because she knew I was afraid of him xD By the end of the game, I found both him and Achenar absolutely terrifying. I backed away from my computer in fear when I attempted to free Achenar lol And don't even get me started on Gehn! Riven scared me even more. Ohh the memories haha
Haha, yes! I was about 10 years old when I played this game in my parents dark basement. When the blue guy in the book started asking for help, I turned the game off and just went back upstairs. I decided to play during the daytime :D
Yes! I was always scared there were going to be jumpscares, but no, it's just a puzzle game 😂
This was back in the day when games were not meant for kids - though we certainly played them. The Nintendo was the main kid friendly platform. Everything else was ostensibly for 18+.
No, sorry. Unlike Riven (Sequel) there were NEVER any actual threats. Well, not in "Riven" Either. (No spoilers). No, this game has NO threats whatsoever, it's about following clues and solving puzzles.
Yes! I was too young to really solve the puzzles but the static with Sirrus and Achenar in the books, plus the desertedness of the island with the whistling wind, made it so creepy. This game left its mark in my brain and compelled me to seek it out in adulthood to actually play.
I'm 71 and I remember fondly being totally amazed, stupefied, and stumped by this game when I got it in 1994. I didn't buy this version; I can't play This version on my computer but I can watch in 1080p on CZcams.. Thank you for posting this and please go on. I like that you are "pretending" to go thru blind. So far my only disappointment with the game (not you) is that the Miller Bros. images and voices have been replaced with renderings. Please carry thru to the end.
Well, thank you! It is strange to play this game while knowing the ultimate conclusion of the story, but I'm finding that I like remembering the journey on the way to the end, too (and it's nice that I can't remember the puzzles at all). In some way, it's like my character is back on the island and struggling to remember what happened before; not only is that true in real life, but it also lends an interesting new dimension to my experience of the game (as strange as that may sound).
Agree - I found the original clips and voices much more chilling than these new ones
There is actually an option to include the original voices and video clips from the original game now. Sp that's awesome.
Only thing they need to add is the Age that they added in realMyst.
With xcloud you can play it over your browser with barley any PC specs because it's being streamed to you
I remember watching my parents and oldest brother play the original Myst, Riven and Exile. I was too young at the time to really help with any puzzles but I loved to watch and "help" whenever they played. Now I just bought Myst and Riven for myself and am excited to play them!
This was the first CD-ROM game I ever played back in the day - solved it on my own as well!
Ah! The memories!
Really glad you made this playthrough. I was enamored with this game as a kid and being able to see it in depth with free roam and (more importantly) with respectful commentary is a treasure. Thank you so much.
Thank you for the kind words; happy to your enjoyed the playthrough!
"Quit playing games with my heart" starts playing in the background
🎶...sometimes I wish I could turn back time, impossible as it may seem...🎵
So glad you’re back, and excited for this playthrough. I’ve long enjoyed playing video games with my brothers (especially this genre) but it doesn’t always work out to do that together. This is a way for me to get that nostalgia and I really appreciate your approach and demeanor, you’re a great companion/guide through these games. I don’t have the patience to struggle through these alone without my brothers, so it is great to follow along with you in my own time. Found your channel through your Quern play through after my brother and I completed it. I still watched your whole playthrough because I enjoyed it so much. Long-winded way of saying I have been enjoying your videos for some time now and certainly missed you while you were on hiatus.
Well, thank you for sticking around; glad to have you along for the ride!
jeeze this game creeped me out when i was a kid but i still played it... really bizarre nostalgia watching this.
Awesome! Good to have you back!!!
Thanks; great to be back!
Thank you for sharing this playthrough. I've loved all the Myst games. I'm unable to play right now, but it brings back memories of watching my dad play them.
So happy to see you're back man! Hope life is doing you right and that your family is doing fine. This made my day!
All's good; happy to be back!
HOLY SHIT YOU'RE BACK! I'VE MISSED YOU SO MUCH! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Aw, I missed you all, too! Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things!
@@AfterworkGaming Yeah, I just found your channel about a week ago, and I was a bit sad to see only year-old content - Welcome Back! I'll check this series out with some delay, need to play ahead first 😁 Very nice to replay Myst while waaaaaaaiting for Firmament 😁
"I'VE MYST YOU SO MUCH"
FTFY 😉
I’m watching this for academic purposes. I’m writing a speech about whether or not video games cause violence. There was a study conducted by Craig Andersen where participants played a violent game, Wolfenstein 3D, and a non violent game, this. Hopeful this will help me understand the game better. Also I get to distract myself as I write it. It’s also due tomorrow and I’ve already procrastinated a lot.
2 minutes in and you made it farther than I ever did in this game! I always wanted to keep playing it but I was too young to be good at it
I'm generally not a fan of listening to people talking hours on end, but you are very entertaining and funny! So thank you for that, also you did a very good job on this playthrough. I love the fact that you take your time which to me makes it more fun, and not just running through the whole game. Love the game, great fun! Thank you !
Yeeeeeeeah! Welcome back!
Wooooo! Thank you!
My dad bought this game when it first came out for our new PC. The thing was, was that he bought it for a rainy day, so it sat on the top shelf of my parent's dresser for I don't know how long. When he finally let us open the box and play, it was such a magical experience. I remember loving the desolation and freedom to go at my own pace and wondering where each puzzle would lead. I had a notebook with ally errors and notes lol
After Must I played Riven once, but it was Exile that really brought me back. That was phenomenal.
well well well, look who's back, back again. Gaming of the Afterworker, tell your friends.
🎵 Guess who's back, guess who's back, guess who's back...🎶
Excited for this series!
As am I!
Yup, played this and the sequels religiously back then. I still think it's one of the most immersive games ever, and the whole "where, why, when and who am I"? premise is pure genius.
The original score and sound design still holds up. Thanks for sharing this! 👍🏼😊
riven was AMAZING I cant wait for the vr release!
THANKS so much for the info on where to find the key to each place by looking in the tower. I needed a little help getting INTO channelwood, but I got through it and into the spaceship world all on my own!
OMG YOU'RE BACK!!!! Really missed you!
I AM! Good to be back :)
Glad to see you are still kicking ass bud! And what a nice surprise to wake up to!
Thank you, thank you! (And thank you for sticking with this channel!)
@@AfterworkGaming there is no one even remotely close to your style and setup so it's a no brainer if I want that level of content patience is a must lol. Hope all is well in your world and glad you are back!
Well, thank you for that -- looking forward to getting back into things!
Since I originally played the point and click (along with riven) and read the books….I love being able to play random solutions. This made me jump for joy like a small child
Appreciate the video! I just saw this was released and immediately downloaded it. I haven't been this excited for a game in a long time. Hopefully I remember what the heck I'm doing...
Great; enjoy! Having replayed it now after a long absence, it's still pretty intuitive -- there really isn't an "unfair" puzzle in the game, I think.
So glad to finally see you're back! And with a blast from the past no less. You have been missed.
Thank you; glad to be back!
Oh man, that score brought me back, playing on the old Dell 486 and loving it. Class intro video :)
Nice to count frame-per-second, vs. seconds per frame. Eh?
Welcome back! I've missed you. Looking forward to new stuff.
Thanks; looking forward to putting out new stuff!
My memory was that I quit it. I didn’t get a few things solved but never finished the game. Now 3 decades later, 2022, I installed Myst (1993) and enjoying the puzzles. Lol.
I played the original version 30 or so years ago! That original game was great, but this trip is great as well!
16:48 researching for an escape room and thats a cool idea 💡
Wow this game looks fantastic now! I still remember playing it when I was 15 all those decades ago! Windows 3.1 would crash regularly midgame on my dad's AST company laptop. I had to use the docking station as there was no cd rom in the actual laptop.
Thanks for the playthrough!
You are very welcome; I'm very excited to play Myst (again)!
YOU EXIIIIIISST!!!
again. At least this time it's only been a year ;D
Dunno how I missed you in the feed since I've spent the last week drifting in and out with a sinus infection, but hey we take these. I remember randomly snagging this game for the DS at some point, like 2009 maybe? I didn't have a single gawd damn clue what I was doing, so I mostly just messed around trying to get something to work. I think I got the ship up once and then just quit because I wasn't into puzzle games much back then.
Coito, ergo sum!
It's a game worth getting back into if you want to play along -- and the new remaster has very slick graphics, so a perfect way to fall into the Myst series (though going to the original Riven after this could be a bit jarring).
I have played Myst dozens of times that I basically have every puzzle solution burned in my head.
This version has a "random" setting just for such an occasion -- you can play the game with randomized solutions. It doesn't fix everything (you'll still remember all the steps), but it will at least require you to go through the game in order to finish it.
Wow! I remember playing this when it first came out way back in 1993! I have them all on Steam and GOG. Would love to try this on Oculus someday.
I'll likely give it a shot, as well. This version also runs perfectly well on PC (i.e., not in VR), but I'm curious how some of the more fiddly puzzles will work without the precision of a mouse.
It is great to see games like this getting a makeover. Shivers is another classic puzzle adventure game that needs a full remake
I remember playing Shivers -- would be great to have a remake where I can experience that atmosphere with all the modern tech.
I would love for all the point and click DOS games to get redone like this.
I wonder, do the random solutions include completely remapping the caves under Selentic?
24:32 Oh I see! It's like how the Books in Myst III have special symbols!
This is THE best interactive game. I loved playing it when it was on CD. I was obsessed. I bought all the other games by Cyan like Riven and Uru. Seems like there were some changes to the program. Now that you don't have to click to go forward, I will definitely buy the updated version.
MY GOODNESS LOOK WHO'S BACK
IT BOY DOES IT FEEL GOOD!
ugh, looks so good
Remade with the Obduction Engine!
As someone who grew up with practically every previous version of this game, I gotta say that Atrus animation, while good from a technical standpoint, looks creepy as farce.
Seriously looking forward to this.😁
edit: wondering if Rime will be included?...
Yeah, I don't know about Rime -- I've avoided reviews/discussions about this game, just so I can be surprised by the updates. I'm still torn on the animated faces, but also realize that the original FMVs probably wouldn't have upscaled very well.
@@AfterworkGaming true that. I guess if we hadn't been "spoilt" by the FMV, we wouldn't even notice an issue here.
A moment of silence for Ti’Anna at 3:50 and to those who get choked up remembering why those little blue flowers were so important
So, there is a face on the carpet on Atrus' room. This face belongs to one of the other developers of the original game. He now lives nearby here in Maine and has his own development studio! I've gone by to visit their offices and met him. It was a fun bit of connecting over this game.
Very cool!
Who would think that 30 years later a dream would be realised, the exceptional Unreal engine would bring the magical world of the original Myst to pure 3D reality. From the inspired Hypercard language which in itself was incredible, the ability to explore Myst in physical reality is certainly wonderous.
Played the original and was so frustrated and quit to early. It’s one of those games that has been on my mind for 30years. I’m looking forward to completing it with you!!
Learn to beat it without youtube. Don't be one of those kids who have to watch videos and you just going to copy
@@IhateAlot718 Your name is correct
Nice videos. Found your channel because of this one. Subscribed. 😊
Thank you, and welcome aboard!
I played these as a kid and then my dad blew my mind when he handed me the books. I couldn’t read them fast enough lol
What books were they?
@@OLee82 there’s three you can read! The book of Atrus, the book of Ti’Ana and the book of d’ni! I have the “Myst Reader” which is all three.
I have read some comments below. I found "Myst" back when the Internet was dial-up. "Screech, screech, ETC". Now it's 2023. This game is wholeheartedly solid to teach deductibe reasoning and logic. I an going to BUY the updated version again, even though its been 30 years.
I remember this game very well playing it when I was a kid with my dad took me ages to figure out the safe and when I did open it was a box of matches 😂
This game came with a pc I had. I think it was a compaq. I was like 8 or 9 & had no idea what was happening. Thanks for sharing this
Very interested for this LP! Never played the original, but many people told me it was really good!
In my biased opinion, it's a fantastic game -- and really set the stage for a lot of the exploration games that came after.
The clarity/picture is MUCH clearer on PC! A shiny ship?? Flowers? Blades of grass? Beautiful PC game!
Oh god he's alive
I live! The reports of my death were greatly exaggerated.
Played the original. Played all the sequels. Bought URU when it came out. Kickstarted Obduction.
Also, I watched your entire blind LP of Obduction just recently. Glad I subbed, this is going to be fun.
Excellent! I'm looking forward to it, too!
I just purchased this on Xbox X. I played it as a child but never really got far. So now i can play it in my 30s haha. Like 30 years later
Played the original! So long ago... almost as long as the last Afterwork Gaming video ... 🤭
Glad this isn't a mirage, jazzed that you're back!
Ha! That's fair enough. Glad to be back!
The hero is back
Ha! Definitely not a hero; just in the right place at the right time...or something like that.
Never in my wildest of dreams did I imagine the point and click game “Myst” I played as a child would one day become a virtual reality game.
I used to love this game as a kid. It was so amazing. You really should play through the other games Raven and exile and revelation
this version is amazing in vr!
came here to see what the remake looks like. It's gorgeous! Not sure how I feel about Atrus being a CGI dude though... Anyways, I may have to get this myself.
Myst was and will always be my aut most favorite PC games.. I wish it was on PS4 and PS5..
When there’s only one place of protection left it’s your last trip into the tower.
Glad to see you back walking is thru one of the best puzzle games of the early 90s. I enjoyed your other vids and am sure to love this one. I really hope they remake Riven next. What hardware are you sporting here?
It's a less previous-gen, but:
i9 @ 3.60 GHz
32GB RAM
RTX 2080 Ti
It gets the job done on almost any game, so I have no reason to upgrade at the moment.
@@AfterworkGaming Thanks. It's nice to count FPS than SPF like we did in 1993.
Why didn't I get notified of your glorious return!?
Well, sir, consider yourself notified! :D
seeing you in the library missing something so critical made me cringe so hard lol and I was there at the beginning when I was in elementary school, my dad and I played it, still have some of our original notes on paper!
i was hoping that you would have a part 2 to this one, but couldn't find it.
Turn othe century, I played on (windows 98 version) PC
Total novelist at game play, very very bad at figuring out the puzzles...the whole tower as a key, thing
But so satisfying the first time fighting-out-paper-bag of transporting in a new world!
@7:50 yes it still counts. It's 8.
I luv the LucasArts games back then for the exploration and interaction, but not when the puzzles got annoying to solve. So you see why I never bought Myst since it was all about puzzles, haha.
I hope we get more old school games like Thimbleweed Park again.
I think the puzzles in Myst range from straightforward to slightly obscure, but it never reaches the heights of the old LucasArts games where some of the solutions are pretty obtuse/out of left field.
In the app version you need to light the pilot light with a match. No matter how hard I try I can’t . Suggestion?
Yep, I am an original Myst player....number two on my list of my fav games (Half Life is first).
That's great; welcome aboard!
@@AfterworkGaming I built a PONG game in 1977, so I guess I'm what you would call OG (Old Gamer).
All the more reason to have you along for the ride, sir!
It's not the first 3D version of this. There was RealMyst from about 15-20 years ago.
Oh. Oh no. I don’t like they replaced the real people that were in the original with animation
Is that closing theme by Terry S. Taylor? Has a very Neverhoody vibe.
I don't care for what they did with the characters. The staticky video was always part of the charm for me, like watching a Bakshi cartoon.
Oh man...Bakshi...that takes me back!
We had a Windows 98 PC and playing this game for the first time.
Nice!
I don't have sprint option, spacebar for photo album etc on this game for laptop. Why?
There's 5 books 2 nd shelf to the right it has the code for brick room door
what the heck, how did they turn this into an actual 3d world you can navigate?!! and not just photos !
I was so disappointed that they didn't include the bonus age of Rime in this version. Cyan giveth and Cyan taketh away. :(
I really want to play the randomizer version! But I don't really know how to get it.
btw you should chnage in the settings to make the "videos" the original live actors
I couldn't get into any of the newer versions but that's nothing to do with their quality. I simply played faaaar too many hours in the school library back in 94.
Now I really fell like total idiot. Got totaly confused and lost at start and tottaly missed message on stone for levers...
It's hard to miss, especially in this version where the graphics are more lush. Well, now that you found it; time to start the adventure!
Is Rime (the age) not present in the 2021 version of this game?
I still have the original disk. Somewhere.
This is the only game I ever played. I got pretty far. I think I got stuck in the ship if I remember correctly. I had the wife and kids and a job so I eventually gave up and concentrated on what mattered most. Now that I am retired I would play again but now I have Linux OS and don't know if you can even get a version for it.
I don't know if ANY of this works (since I don't have Linux), but here's a recent reddit thread about just that question: www.reddit.com/r/myst/comments/n3jra6/running_myst_games_on_linux_some_tips_and_quirks/
where can i buy this
Help plz still don’t know what to do
This new game is simply called "Myst" , not "The island of Myst"
Correct!
Is it on ps4 vr?
Someone else can feel free to correct me, but I think right now (August 31, 2021) the only console version is for Xbox.
I played it as a kid and got stuck in the early stages. Not a good return on my Dad's investment.
Never heard of this. And I been trying for 3 hours.... kill me idk what to do
played the original..Riven was good too...
I can fully say, I miss the real video feed... The animated images just don't do it for me and it brings down the realism that once was.
I know someone posted on Steam a way to swap the FMVs our for the computer generated ones. I may look into it, though I think the audio doesn't line up exactly.
hm, the change to things like the holographic message is disappointing, but not unexpected
I still prefer the original real version of Atrus rather then the cartoonish version of him when playing this actual new version of the game.
Yeah same, he looks cartoony as do the brothers, in the original they were scary and sinister, not like disney villians.
I don't like the CGI characters and much prefer the full motion video.
The environment looks amazing.
I think I'll stick to realmyst because the CGI Atrus just takes away from the immersion factor imo
