    My dad played the old school Myst. He had a spiral notebook he kept with notes in it from the game. When I was a kid I remember watching him play it and always being fascinated by how relaxing it looked (of course he never allowed me to see the messed up psychological side of it. Every now and then he would set me on his lap infront if the boxy computer and let me run around the Island of Myst and push buttons and such. Thank you for this elaborate guidance through this lets play. It was cool to solve the puzzles and reffed to these videos to ensure I wasn’t missing anything when I would get doubtful that I was doing things right. Such an amazing game.

    Thank you for your wonderful walkthroughs. I am 69 and many, many years ago I bought Riven for my PC and never really got anywhere and actually gave it up. As that was probably about 25 years ago, there was no community for gamers help. Ive always yearned to play the game and when I recently found MYST for my iPad I bought it immediately. Now I’ve completed the game (with your generous help) I realise that there is a definite way of thinking for these games and Holy of Holies, Riven is now available for my iPad so I can finally play it again and hopefully this time I’ll get somewhere! Thanks again. 😊😊😊

    In the version I played, when I returned to Myst after helping Atrus, there was another book on the floor of the library with a 4 number code which when input into the panel in the hidden room under the walkway to the rocket, caused the panel to rise. On returning to the library, I found the center of the floor had risen up revealing another book. Just wondering if you have played this version.

  • @christopherp1392

    It leaves the question of who placed the pages around. The father says his sons tricked him and trapped him in D'ni and both brothers say that the other brother trapped him, so even if you assume the red and blue books were set in advance from the father being trapped and the brothers fell for it, how did the pages get scattered?

    • @TheTrueAdept
      @TheTrueAdept Před rokem +1

      Probably because the father rewrote the various ages to scatter them around. You can literally rewrite ages, just not used all that often because it tends to get... messy... if you do so with people in them.

    • @robertsilvermyst7325
      @robertsilvermyst7325 Před rokem +1

      I think the pages were removed before the books were ever used. Atrus probably took them and scattered them about before his sons trapped him in the green book and fell into their own book traps. He probably did this to prevent someone from simply walking up and using the books to free whoever was trapped in them.

  • @ghostgetti4310
    @ghostgetti4310 Před rokem

    @28:20 Sure! I just beat it, and I'll tell you what I thought. It was my first time playing through and it took me quite a while! I didn't even know this was a remake of an older game, I'd just heard of Myst through Google recommendations while searching for escape room games.
    I came to watch your video because I'd already saved after getting the switch vault page. (I wanted to see what happens if you don't bring the page into D'ni.) I laughed so hard at Atrus' reaction to the player not bringing the page.
    This might be a long read but, here's my experience with the game:
    Initially I avoided this game because I'd read complaints from other people about some of the puzzles' difficulty and logic. I played The Witness and didn't enjoy it. A gameplay trailer I watched looked like the player would just roam around on an island (aimlessly), so I had my apprehensions... but eventually I was bored enough and thought, why not?
    As you said in this video, I would not have known what to do if I hadn't already played a lot of escape room games before! Thankfully I have, but it still took stumbling around for a good 20-30 minutes, tinkering and looking around, before I managed to get into my first book!
    I wasn't really paying attention to the story at this time because I was still thinking of quitting, like I did for The Witness, but into the forest book I went.
    I managed to beat the forest book pretty quickly... but I missed the lever on the upper floor that unlocks the spiral stairs. This caused me to miss the red and blue page that would cause me pain later on. This game has no way of telling you where your lost red/blue pages are (that I could find), and combing through each of the books' levels gets kind of annoying. It only tells you in save files (if you notice) how many blue/red pages you've acquired, from there it's up to the player to deduce it's 1 blue/red page per book, and good luck if you forgot which books you acquired red/blue pages from.
    Anyways, fast forward and I'm still kind of on the fence about whether or not I want to finish this game. All my other games recently have been really terrible, and this was the least terrible one, so I just kept on going.
    I found a lot of the puzzle solutions to be more "exploratory" rather than logically difficult. Like, "What if I tried this? Or what happens if I did this? This isn't working, instead of trying to screw with it I should look for another way!" Often that would bring me to the solution. This isn't a bad thing per say, but just something I noticed.
    My favorite puzzles were in the Stone Ship Age book. I enjoyed every single puzzle there! I thought the coolest one was telescope flashing light house thingy, then pressing the button that matched the degree on the telescope.
    The majority of the games' other puzzles however, I found to be ok-to-annoying. In particular: the underground train maze, that was a nightmare. You turn soooooooooo slowly. I was trying to beat this game without using guides or spoilers, but I wasn't about to go through 1-2 hours of mapping out that maze on paint/paper, hell no. So I used a guide for that.
    The story really opened up for me when I started listening to the voice actors from the books, after getting my first blue/red pages. Listening and trying to guess the strings of words they were saying, the facial expressions... And slowly understanding the dilemma I was in... It really drew me in! That's when the game became much more enjoyable for me, and I really had to finish it.
    Before this point I was skipping most of the reading + books, so I got stuck in the ship trying to enter the Selenitic Age crystal book. (I didn't realize you could turn the page in a book for the longest time lol) I also had to use a guide again to figure out where I was missing my 2nd last pages once I had finished the 4 books.
    I liked the blue guys' voice acting the most, he convinced me! I was really hoping he was the good guy. I was going to pick him too, but when I listened to both the pre-final page stories and how the two stories didn't add up factually about their fathers' demise, along with the existence of a new green book? Not to mention neither of them told me about the secret page in the vault! I began to distrust both of them, and I just had to know what was in that green book.
    When I opened it, I gasped! A face I'd never seen before, "Was this the father?" he looks so much younger than I thought he would, considering the age of the sons. He spoke with such calmness and repose, (I was freaking out; thinking I could potentially be trapped forever and that I had just made a huge terrible mistake).
    He was so cool though. He's the legend, I've been reading about his adventures this entire game!
    Anyways, I was really happy I got the best ending my first time!
    The bad endings you get from saving the blue or red guy were pretty brutal, I re-watched the ending where Atrus burns their books after just to clean my short-term memory.
    All-in-all, my experience was pretty good! Especially towards the end, but I could see how some people could have a bad experience and quit mid-way. (and wow I just watched some gameplay from the original, the original has a way darker tone, and real people too! Really different vibe!)
    Hope it was a good read, thanks for the video + commentary!

      When you turn all of the marker switches on, and then turn the one on the dock off, I think it opens up a little safe on the dock, and that’s where you find the white page. But first you have to get to the marker switch on the clock tower island to turn it on, which means you have to raise the bridge to that island. In order to do that, you have to follow the clues for the Mechanical Age.

      As for the brothers: I think, really, the suggestion is that they're both guilty. The recording in Channelwood from Sirrus to Achenar tells him to "take just one page," which is a fairly straight-forward reference to trapping Atrus in D'ni.

      I actually didn't reset anything -- I had an earlier save (before we went to Mechanical Age) and just punched in the code to get to Atrus before we picked up the white page. The game doesn't make it mandatory to visit anything, so if you know the solutions to puzzles, you can beat the game without ever hearing from Sirrus, Achenar, or cracking any of the linking books. I know they were trying to stick to the source material but I'm kinda sad they didn't include a nod to MYST IV with the two trapped endings. The books the brothers are trapped in aren't just red and blue voids, they're actually dead-end ages without a functioning MYST book for each brother to leave. Sirius is trapped on an age called Spire, and Achaar in Haven.

    • @biglightbt
      @biglightbt Před 2 lety +3

      They also removed some of the finer details of a lot of the mechanisms. The tower rotation drive used to make an absolute racket when it engaged and the access elevator used to turn 90 degrees half-way up the shaft for no obvious reason. It also looked like they MASSIVELY reduced the scale of the tunnel explorer on selentic. It used to be possible to get absolutely lost in that thing to the point you'd ragequit the game.

      There were four different possible endings, but only one of which was a good ending, proving that you had done everything correctly. I think the moral was that you were supposed to see that Atrus was trustworthy, while his sons were not, so therefore you wanted to give him what he asked for.

      It doesn't look like it. I don't know if there's a plan to introduce it at a later date, but for now the game just covers the original Myst experience.

      @@AfterworkGaming In defense of not having it, I can understand given how Rime was always an after-thought. But I felt it offered something the original experience didn't actually have: Some form of definitive ending. It also awkwardly connects to Riven.
      It's odd that it the age was even ported to the derived DS version of Myst but not here.
      I know Starry Expanse (RealRiven) is running on Unreal and will be VR capable and the entire project is finally now in direct collaboration with Cyan. Maybe we will get something to this version as that project inches closer to completion.
      Which from my estimates will be some-time in 2040. (I kid but I think those guys are hitting Black Mesa levels of fan project completion time.)

    Never played myst before. I've heard and seen it before, but never played it as I never really like the "point and click" mechanics that games used to have. Somehow I missed that there would be a remake of it untill I saw that you started a playthrough of it. I loved their other game 'obduction'. Though hated the maze-puzzle part in obduction (don't get me wrong the puzzle itself wasn't bad, just really hated that there is a loading screen in that puzzle).
    But the puzzle game I would be most waiting for would be 'the talos principle 2', I had a lot of fun with the first game (especially the 'road to gehenna' dlc), but at least I know they are working on it ^^

      I can see how the point-and-click nature can be a turn-off, even back in 1993. The ability to move around was introduced in a prior remaster, but I appreciate the graphical and sound polish they added this time around!

    Well, the missing Ryme Age was a bit disappointing. One has to wonder why it was omitted.
    This version does have some good aspects, and more bad aspects than I would have expected.
    I can't see this being added to my Myst collection, it stops at the Kickstarter edition it would seem.

      @@DavidGreen_au I played the 1993 version when it first came out. I never had any experience with any of the other versions. Seeing this walkthrough of the 2021 version, I noticed two significant improvements over the 1993 version. One was the realistic animation of the bodies of water, and the other was the ability to carry more than one page 📄 at a time.

    I remember finishing the game and being truly disappointed. I did all 3 scenarios with the last one (the Father's book) being a major disappointment. I played on the Sega Saturn.

    I have to say I was getting very frustrated playing this game because like crosswords unless you have played similar games the missions are impossible to even get started. So you're guides gave me a shove then I went solo only coming back to them when I was well and truly stuck. The controls on the Xbox One are horrible to be honest and spoil the game a little. Its obvious this game was built originally for PC and so I switched to the PC version with game pass and bang much better. Thank you for your efforts much appreciated.

      @@AfterworkGaming I loved it. I remember playing text games way back in the early 80's so this was certainly an upgrade on that. I left off playing games while bringing up my kids and then got a lot of pleasure from being a spectator but that was mostly COD and Halo with the ever present FIFA of course. So when I retired I nabbed my sons Xbox One as he bought an Xbox X and a bloody PS5. I tried playing first person shooters but I am terrible my kill ratio would make a blind man blush. I got a free gamepass and imagine my delight to find this game. However I was on the verge of defeat when I came on your video and now I am up for more. Thanks again from an old but happy gamer. PS I am trying to get an Xbox One X but there isn't any so have to wait, in the meantime as an IT engineer I build my own PC's and modify Laptops so I am set.

      @@AfterworkGaming I should also say something else for you. When my kids were young their mother a very conservative person disapproved of them playing video games so much she restricted their time. I would regularly allow them to use my profile on the QT. They have just finished University and to their mothers surprise that gaming time has had a big payoff. My younger son is waiting for his induction date with the RAF to train as a drone pilot and much of his testing was on video games platforms. My eldest took music tech at university and has landed a job with a studio that produces music for the games industry. So all the illicit late night father enabled gaming was actually part of their education, I dodge a bullet there didn't I.
