    It goes dark because the lighthouse is siphoning power from your VR set!

  • @WarthogDemon
    @WarthogDemon Před 2 lety +8

    There was a lighthouse time limit in the original PC game but this feels way faster than it was back then. I'm pretty sure as a kid it lasted at least 5 minutes for me. I know I said the lighting in this age gives me Amateria vibes and you yourself have said it. But for me at least Stoneship feels . . . depressing. I guess knowing the boys on the rocks either died or left, it feels abandoned. Like a person has been living here and this is the first day he or she wakes up alone. They're looking out and realize everyone they knew are gone forever and it's just them now. Which is odd because Amateria's lighting and music felt optimistic. It felt more like you're not alone for much longer, and that people are returning.
    I don't know, that's just the feel I get.
    I won't spoil it for any viewers watching for the first time, but I'm a little concerned what that thing in Achenar's room in Mechanical is going to look like. (Everyone who's played knows exactly what I'm talking about.)

      I spun it a bunch and it didn't deplete by the time I got the pages, turned on the boat power, and left.

    • @Mirality
      @Mirality Před 2 lety +1

      They last about three or four minutes I think, which (using full motion, not teleport) is easily long enough to go up to the telescope, line it up, go down to the compass and hit the button.
      I got it first try so I didn't test if this changed, but in the original version if you hit the wrong button on the compass it will instantly drain as well.
      Edit: looks like Sven tested this one for us, and yes, it still drains when you hit the wrong button. :)

    @Mike14264 Před 2 lety +3

    I think Atrus managed to make the boat appear due to quantum physics.
    No, really. As much as the Descriptive Book cares, if a boat isn't written in there, it might actually exist, similar to how the boys did exist, even though Atrus never wrote them in. It's stuff that's between the lines. The reason the boat's not there is not because it isn't there. It might be, you just don't see it. If you're not looking, there may be a boat in there. That's how this stuff kinda works, when you're not looking at it, it exists and it doesn't exist at the same time. That's how physicists managed to explain how electrons could act like both particles and waves. Difference is, randomness decided that the boys would exist, and that the boat wouldn't, at least for now.
    When Atrus wrote the boat into the Age, then it was clearly stated that the boat was there, and it stopped being only in the quantum realm of existance/non-existance. Problem is, he didn't specify how the boat would appear, and of course, the boat could've existed in many ways, on the water, on top of the rock, or embedded in it. Randomness chose the latter. That's probably one of the main reasons why the Art is so dangerous and so difficult to master.

    Gosh, my Dad and I played the original Myst when I was a kid. We could never figure out the compass puzzle (I did figure it out years later though) and every time we tried pushing a button, it would cut the lights off and sound the alarm, and that SCARED kid-me so much lol, I would ask my Dad, "Dad PLEASE don't push the button, it's scary!" lol

    Whenever you turn on or off the lights in this version, the screen goes blank for a second, which is annoying.
    Also the power does stay on after you turn on the submersible lamps because I did go back to Stoneship after finishing the game and the power was still on (which I believe is the case in realMyst also)
    Lastly, I’m really glad they let you take both red and blue pages here instead of one at a time (though it would have been nice if there was something to show that you have the pages with you after getting them)

      @@rjb1714 I didn't say that to be mean.
      I meant it quite literally.
      I don't understand it.
      I would assume it originates from "would've" sounding like "would of" but I would expect people to grow out of this when they learn what each word means.
      No matter how I phrase this, it's going to sound like I'm criticizing... but I'm not.

    I think the one door that didnt open in the compass room is cause the lever is rusted, at least it looked rather rusted compared to the other one, furthermore I think the reason your view goes black when you touch the crank is cause you get an electric shock, every time the power is out it makes a "zap" sound when you touch the crank to recharge it, so that's the only logical explanation I can come up with.

  • @Johnrl21
    @Johnrl21 Před 2 lety +6

    There’s a lot good about the VR version of this game……but make no mistake…..there’s a lot kinda bad about this version. For me, the straw was the handling of the compass room. The inability to size up the compass as well as the lack of the great music in that moment when you get the puzzle right is really bad.

    • @Pelagon
      @Pelagon Před 2 lety

      Agreed. And there's an additional issue with randomization and the telescope, where large sections of numbers can be obscured by rock. In my game, everything in the area of 0/360 was impossible to read, so I wasn't even sure what the maximum value was, or how to map it to the compass.

    This really lacks any feel. The generator wheel looks effortless to turn, which completely breaks immersion. Also, I think cyan could have reimagined some things in this, as some of the game design is just janky. I have never liked the puzzle in mechanical age as it feels arbitrary and pointless. Due to that there is no intuition in working out what to do, it's just trying stuff. Riven is a far better game, and I'd have really liked to see some of that design philosophy backported.
