    One of the base things I did on my E36 M3 track car was upgrade the power steering line. Those are prone to failure.
    Regarding E36 reliability, I actually specifically bought an E36 M3 as my track car because I wanted a reliable car that was on the cheaper side to maintain. There are known weaknesses, so as long as folks take care of those, these cars are really solid. I got 7 track days in this year with no failures. One issue was cooling issues on a 110°F day. I retrofitted the S54 oil cooler to take care of that.

    The e36 m3 isn't a car you buy to just drive around. It's a car your take care of more then your wife and children.

    Dude my e36 is automatic slap shift, not manual, they only bad thing about the slap shift is that it has a delay in shifting, so you have to learn the delay timing and being a previous stick shift driver this is hard to get used to. The only issue I have with my e36 is is the water pump and ball join (ball joint because the car caught air.)

    I've had a '95 and a '99 M3. I daily drove both to almost 300,000 mi. and never had a single problem with power steering, ever. I had to change lower control arm bushings but other than that I don't know what you did or didn't do to that car. Usually it's the ps lines under the bottom of the reservoir that leak in almost every e36.

    Can you recommend an OBD scanner for pre-96 cars. My 36 doesnt have the OBD2 port. Only the circle thing beside the fuse box
    edit: Finally happy to see you to ditch the amber corners for a clear one!

    The only thing that has left me stranded (but not really, a good hard smack on the seat while starting the car has worked more than once to get me home) where fuel pumps; e30, e36, and e46 all with over 200k on the pump though. If you have an e36, and you don't have a power steering fluid leak, you will (unless you have already fixed it). I have one of those ECS kits sitting in my garage waiting on me to have time to put it on the car.

      They have a lite version on the app. If you install it and play around you should be able to see. At the very least you can read and diagnose any codes, including manufacturer specific codes, monitor love data, clear codes, etc.

      @imnota Před 3 lety

      You got lucky if you didn't damage anything else.
      Everyone I know that did that had to replace their steering rack shortly after because the pump is pretty much sending metal flakes all over the lines and circuit, and those metal pieces will fuck up the rack seals.

    • @zk9964
      @zk9964 Před 3 lety

      @@TreatsOnTheStreets Properly manufactured crimps by Tier 1 suppliers are pretty good, vs some hoses with an AN fitting. Nothing against CB, I have their E30 rear brake line kit. But for a simple PS hose, factory replacement is best imo.

      @@zk9964 people will always assume anything with a name brand or whatever everyone else uses is always better. OEM parts will always top 90% of other brand parts

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  Před 3 lety

      I agree most OEM parts are better, but one big reason my car has been so reliable is because I replaced OEM parts with non OEM ones: plastic radiator with all metal one, plastic water pump with all metal one, electric fan, etc. These cars have been around long enough to find all the OEM weak points, and any BMW shop will tell you the stock power steering lines are prone to failure. Many tracks will not let an e36 on if they have stock lines because they blow so much when pushed and it greases up the track. I've also seen a lot of OEM parts replaced with crappy aftermarket ones so I know where you're coming from.
