  • Today we do another mod to the BMW e36 m3! This is one I was REALLY looking forward to. The slow steering BMW gave to the e36 was focused more towards high speed cruising comfort than the race track. Still the e36 is a great track car as it is, but how much of a difference will it make with 40% faster steering? Today, we find out!

      I notice that on initial turn-in’s especially when cornering at speed, not much happens, but then it gets going once you turn in more. Also just the stock camber setup & weight distribution of E36s cause them feel understeery in sharper corners.

    If you really want to fix the steering you need to do a chase bays steering res and cooler kit and convert to a solid steering coupler. That Quick steer kit is nothing more than an angle kit, just decreases your turn radius but still takes every bit as long to get there at the end of the day.

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets

      It takes less input from the steering wheel to turn the tires the same distance. You get 40% more steering angle in the first 360 degrees of steering. Already have a solid steering coupler from an e34. Definitely still need the chase bays kit before it gets too hot this summer.

    @bcastromusic Před 3 lety

    Did you replace the center ball joints just because they were worn out? The SLR kit comes w/ a bearing to replace the ball joint on the knuckle side so that one has to come out correct?
    I'm replacing w/ new arms so I'm thinking I'll just bring the arms and the SLR bearings to a shop and have them remove those joints and install the bearings for me so most of the hard work is done? I use Turner 80 durometer polyurethane bushings for the lollipops and usually just replace the whole thing (turner sells the lollipop w/ bushing pre-installed). Should make the job much easier I guess.

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  Před 3 lety

      I replaced the inner ball joints because mine were worn out. Even if you don't do that, you will have to have the outer ball joint pressed out so the heim joint from SLR can be pressed in. It is required for the mini kit to work. If you buy the SLR arms for the angle kit instead of the mini kit then all of that is already done for you

    • @bcastromusic
      @bcastromusic Před 3 lety

      @@TreatsOnTheStreets confirmed, so just the outer ball joint will need to be replaced. Do you know if it changed the overall track width - it doesn't say in the kit description. I'm assuming not since still using stock arms.

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  Před 3 lety

      Track width is unchanged if using stock control arms. The longer arms with the angle kit is what gives the wider track width. If your tires already hit your inner fender the mini kit will not provide you with any additional angle, just faster steering, bump steer correction, roll center correction, and adjustable ackerman. If your tires do not already hit the inner fender then the mini kit will allow for some extra angle until you do.

    I'm getting odd front end rattling when turning and going over bumps at high speed as well as stiffening of the steering wheel and slightly turning more into whichever direction the corner goes. All my bushings, endlinks, and ball joints have been recently replaced.

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets

      @@TreatsOnTheStreets UHMW condor bushings. Alignment was done recently, only have 0.05 degrees in on either side (for better turn in feel) for 0.10 total.
      From what I can tell this is stemming from one issue, because the rattle and bumpsteer(?) wasn't there before

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  Před 3 lety +2

      The kit geometry is supposed to correct bump steer geometry. I still have a little but it is not as bad as it was before. I did have a little rattling because the jamb nut came loose on my adjustable lollipops. Also a few of the nuts on the steering kit came loose after I drove for a while. I suggest taking them off and using blue thread locker so they don't back out. Additionally, the bolt that goes through the control arm and attaches to the knuckle is tapered like a ball joint would be. Make sure that is seated properly. I had issues with that as well.

    Nice! Do they make a kit for the E30? I just watched Donut Media install this kit on an E36 earlier today.
