  • Life doesn't always go to plan, and when disaster strikes (as it did for me this week), I found solace in my sketchbook. In this video I share with you the sketch I did to switch off after a stressful and hellish day, and I chat about what a wonderful thing it is that we can turn to art and sketching to take away our troubles. If you'd like to try this sketch yourself, the reference photo and all the sketching gear I used is listed below. The location is Dean Village in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Very good video and sketch, I started sketching because I wanted a form of therapy and it really makes you only think about the sketch and not about anything else. Also, the quote at the beginning was perfect for the theme of the video. 😊

Thank you. You’re right it really does make you switch off for a while, such a good reason to get into sketching. I love the quote too 🙂

This sketch is fabulous M yes, I’ve definitely discovered the therapeutic benefit of sketching, it really takes you to another place. I really really hope you get your disaster sorted!

Thanks Cheryl, appreciate that. It’s all good, no-one came to any harm which is all that matters really, the rest is just stuff I can replace. My collection of colouring pens survived anyway, that was the big concern 😄

Great sketch Donald and what a time you have had😧. Cannot agree more about the benefits of art but for me, I get the benefits of holding off anxiety before it gets too bad. Once it strikes, I cannot do any art as I would just end up making a mess and binning it. I know when to stay away from the pens and paint and when to do it and that is OK for me even if it means I can go days or sometimes weeks without attempting anything. I always know that when I come down again my art stuff will still be waiting for me.

Thanks Graham, it was a right palaver but all will be sorted soon enough. If it works for you to be more selective about when you get the art supplies out then that’s the right approach, there’s no rules to any of this. I find it helps me but strangely I have a lot less time for sketching since I started a channel about sketching, making the videos takes up so much of the week! Cheers, Donald.

Yep, it's a therapy indeed. Sometimes an artist produces their most rewarding work when under stress. We've only got to think of Vincent Van Gogh and how he suffered to produce a gift of art for a friend or loved one or just for himself. He poured his soul into his canvas, in much the same way as we might do when trying to let go of something and see something of beauty grow from a blank page.
I know a few people, including myself, who have discovered that art is a way to heal, or at least come to terms with, some aspect of our lives; be it physical, emotional or mental.

It’s so true, before I got into all of this it never occurred to me that people would do art for any reason other than because they were good at it. It’s a very rewarding thing to discover people like yourself who have found such a big impact from getting into art. Cheers, Donald.

Check out Ian Fennelly for loose watercolour application. The colour tells the story and in many cases is not related to the underlying sketch. He has many free online demos of him applying colour. Try scanning your B&W sketches and trying different approaches on the same sketch. And also have a look at Felix Scheinberger images of his art for inspiration. His loose energetic style of sketching and watercolour is worth a look. All the best in your sketching adventures.

Hi Ronald, thank you for the suggestions. Yes I know Ian and Felix’s work very well, their stuff is pretty wild. You’re right, reproducing the same sketch is a great way to learn and try things. Thanks a lot, Donald.
