  • Batman has a roster full of unique villains. During his time in the DCAU (the DC animated universe) his rogues gallery expanded. The success of characters like Harley Quinn led to an attempt to create even more new baddies for the caped crusader. Over in the tie in comic - The Batman Adventures- Bruce Timm and Paul Dini tried their hand at a new female villain the form of Roxy Rocket. Despite an animated episode (The Ultimate Thrill) and transferring into the DC Comics universe; this thrill seeking stunt woman never quite took off. Why was that? Did/does she have potential? The thing about Roxy as a stuntwoman being an adrenaline junkie could have been dived into more for the fact that there is a legitimate brain chemistry phenomenon with a lot, if not all ‘career’ daredevils. It’s been found with fMRIs that in the daredevils studied their insula is more active than your the average joe you’d pull off the street’s brain during risky behavior.
The insula being a key neurological location in habit forming as well as physiological addiction.
Along with this, daredevils, and active high risk takers have been shown to consistently have issues with their dopamine receptors. The parts of our brain that signal that we’re getting enough stimulation, and assist in executive function. For these risk takers it’s taking risks that makes their brain feel BASELINE. Everything else in comparison is painful(fellow Adhd brains out there know just how tortuous being under-stimulated and dopamine deficient can be)
So if they’d taken a chance to look into just how destructive needing to take more and more risks was on her and the toll that agonizing mundanity has, and her showing she actually is wanting some normalcy… yeah, that could have actually made for a legitimate “Batman” villain.
But that wasn’t what we got, and that’s not the direction we took. I still think she’s an alright villain
I’m glad you bring Scarecrow’s “Study Hall” comic up. It’s my absolute favorite

    • @msf2399
      @msf2399 Před 2 lety +42

Consider also the extremes taking risks can be pushed to in a superhero setting; not just crime, but the methods of doing them. Magic. Experimental tech. Genetic modification. Roxy still wanting that safety net & not wanting anyone to get hurt makes for a great push-and-pull. Like, the moment Sasha said “Green Lantern,” my brain went “Have her steal a ring.” The rocket might be iconic for her, but it’d be so much more of a thrill to really, truly *fly* out there. The disregard for her own safety could also very easily lead her into a sympathetic henchman role, like if a more science-y villain gave her superpowers but they’d become dangerously unstable without a certain medication; not wanting anyone else to be hurt by her, Roxy would be forced to go along with that villain’s schemes. We could see some moments of grounded reality setting back in with moments like the Catwoman fight, with Roxy hootin’ & hollerin’ over her victory only to look at the wreckage where her opponent landed as the smile slips off her face, she cautiously calls out a few times, and then runs over in a panic trying to dig them out. Alternatively, a moment when she decides to cut & run because a job’s gotten out of hand (either her boss has become a danger to *her* or someone is going to get legitimately hurt,) and we see just how scared she is under the mask; the hero leans out of their cell saying if she’s leaving anyway she should free them, while Roxy’s all “That’s your thing. Me? I don’t wanna wake up dead over this,” but also having a serious internal debate over whether to risk her own neck to help someone while she has the chance.
She’d never be a good vigilante because she wouldn’t want to be picking fights with people-seems more of a practical “get out while I can” type, even if she’d normally realize it was time to bail after getting a few miles in too deep-but she could work really well in the shades of grey.

Any character can be made interesting by a good writer. Grant Morrison is notorious for taking second-rate, nearly-forgotten characters and building entire series and mythologies around them, like Animal Man and Doom Patrol. Hell, sie took a minor joke character from Doom Patrol, Flex Mentallo, and created an entire limited series around him to construct a deep analysis of comic books as the modernized archetypes of the gods. And the Ostrander run of the original Suicide Squad turned minor, totally inconsequential supervillains like Deadshot into cultural phenomena.

Why make Deadshot a Batman villain when he fits way better with Green Arrow, being a marksman and a hire assassin. Why make Mad Hatter a Batman villain when he would fit better as a Wonder Woman or Black Canary villain, being an incel using mind control on women. You have to keep in mind that Batman's original rogues gallery was filled mostly with joke characters until recently, most of them have become completely different characters by the '80s: Joker, Mr Freeze, Riddler and Penguin are the best examples. At that same time you had a few new characters that have now become just as prominent as the original cast like Bane and Ra's but Spider-Man doesn't really have that.
Spider-Man has a lot more new characters and ones that stick out more but they don't tend to stay around or become as prominent. After the Clone Saga, his most prominent rogues are still the same ones he had in the '60s. The biggest villains he had from the '80s to early 2000s would probably have to be Hobgoblin, Venom, Carnage and Morlun. All of which weren't doing too well in the early 2000s. Hobgoblin became second rate after the Macendale era, Venom had the Lethal Protector arc but the writers weren't too sure what to do with him and bonded him with random people, Carnage would've been known mostly from Maximum Carnage and wouldn't have a big event until 2015 and Morlun wasn't exactly seen as an interesting villain so much as something that got the plot moving and added magic to Spider-Man. In the early 2000s, everyone except for maybe Venom would've been considered relatively obscure. In that time, the original rogues gallery had been revived and most of the new characters, which hadn't really done well outside of their own events, were sidelined.
Technically speaking, most of Batman's rogues gallery haven't been around before the '80s whereas most of Spider-Man's tends to be the same exact people he originally fought. The fact DC has rebooted also means that the characters and writers have a fresh start on established characters whereas Marvel writers can play it safe and work with a character that has been around since the '60s who's largely unchanged.

There’s also the Red Rockets (from JLI), Blue Beetle Ted Kord (who’d try to upgrade the Bug to keep up with Roxy), Fire, Enemy Ace (if you don’t mind a little time traveling), and maybe a Looney Tunes crossover with the Road Runner. (Where do you think that rocket came from?)

I think Roxy is in a good/bad place right now, let me elaborate. I feel like a character like shouldn't be a near-constant, like Cat-woman, her showing up here, there and everywhere I feel really works for her character, being a thrill-seeker you don't know where or when she'll show up, but she does she will always be loud and trying to take all the attention as she seeks higher levels of danger.
That said I do agree that having her tied to batman is a big mistake and the near-constant sexual jokes would get a little grating, but I think making her a 'cosmic' villain makes a lot more sense, but also, creates a problem. As it does mean there are few characters she can interact with, the Green Lantern core is one, Super Man and Co is another, Lobo maybe baby? But I don't really see her like racing gods and the such.
As for her backstory, you could have that she was a stunt woman who got fired after tampering with her own stunts to increase the danger, feeling like it was never enough of a thrill for her, so after getting fired, she kept amping up the danger which leads to super heroes getting involved and having to serve jail time when she was eventually approached by a company to send a human into space on an experimental rocket. The rocket launches her into a worm hole and she's never seen again, so the company asks a Lantern to go looking for her, when you basically find out she's become a villain in a space city, because she believes the rules don't apply to her as she is an unknown to this world.
Just a general idea, but I feel like it sticks to her character, as for the 'fear' aspected, rather than being scared of stunts, maybe she 'flying away' from something, something she doesn't want to come to terms with so she's literally trying to out run it, her own mortality perhaps?

I also think Green Arrow could work too, both can be very flirtatious and sassy, and it would be cool to see them have a competitive sassy dynamic, maybe Black Canary gets a little jealous and Oliver feels like he’s in hot water in a 40s romcom kind of way, it could be a lot of fun
Basically I really like Roxy rocket, I think she’s very underrated so the more or we can get her the better I say, but I totally agree with you Sasha, I want her to be bad.

Roxy being a green lantern villian is actually brilliant holy shit, especially love the idea of linking her w Hal since they both have the pilot angle as a corner stone of their characterization, I was originally thinking it’d be interesting to pit her against mr miracle to try and play up the acting/stage performance that goes into stunt work and giving them a bit of a rivalry. Like it’d be cool to have their motivations clash with Scott being someone who escapes danger as a result of his traumatic upbringing and Roxy being this selfish thrill seeker who sees the danger she puts herself and others in as a ride for her amusement. You could even just have them have a mutual respect for each other as performers but I do love the idea of Scott being petty as fuck towards his competition like when he called Zatana a hack in justice league action

She could probably work as a villain to multiple heroes with the joke being that "she gets around", she just seems like such a petty nuisance cause she's not Joker evil. i feel like the biggest problem with her is that she's too one note and her design is kind of boring. Harley Quinn was a success because she had a bomb ass design, she was a hench-woman which wasn't really a thing to my knowledge and she played well off of a pre-established character like The Joker to boost her up in the spotlight. Roxy lacks all of that.

This would keep her in the grounded section of the DCU, plus with his background as an acrobat and hers as a stunt woman it could be similarly fitting. As far as supergirl? Have her keep pushing the limit knowing that she'll get bailed out by Supergirl, or you could even give her to Shazam, same thing... Only Billy wouldn't know how to handle the flirty nature. 😂 Either way if she goes against someone with super powers have her keep pushing the edge. Push that adrenaline junkie mentally to extremes. Part of the reason why Roxy was created was because Bruce Timm and Paul Dini found out that due to the way their contract worked, they didn't get any residuals for characters they created for Batman: TAS. So even though Harley Quinn became super popular, they don't get any money from merchandise or shows/movies Harley appeared in.
But their contract with DC Comics allowed them to get residuals from characters they created for the comics. So they decided to create characters for the comics before putting them in the shows so that they'd get paid if the character became super popular like Harley and gets bunch of merchandise and used in other shows/movies.

Counter point, Roxy Rocket "redemption" is pretty much self written. She isn't really evil as a concept, and often isn't even shown doing something even technically criminal (like essentially trolling Batman). Not a great candidate for villain who stays a villain, on account of already barely being one.
I see your point about having her paired as a villain or at least antagonistic with Hal but, counter point to that too, it involves thinking about the existence and currently living status of Hal Jordan. Not pleasant, pass. Though having her becoming one of the ring bearers could lead something really interesting. The major problem imo is finding writers who could properly write some with her creative showpersonship and having a tool that creates anything you can imagine. She could work as a GL, because of the will power to overcoming fear, but i think also as a yellow one, and imo that is the closest she can be to a permanent villain status (other than she probably would just be an antagonist yellow lantern). With her acting and stunts, be it the traditional type or the later "live action" ones, she can create gut wrenching fear in an audience. Heck, in a way you can even say she made Batman fear (the lamer sense), as in fear that the batmobile was trashed. Now what kind of terrifying fearful stunts she couldn't cause with that yellow baby. But again, finding a writer who could actually write that well in all the levels it would have to work for it to be really good, now that is the trick.

I'm definitely biased in this regard, but I would want to give her superpowers: luck, reflexes, endurance, and some kind of flight ability fueled by the heights of her thrill-seeking. Like Longshot + Cannonball, sorta.

I think it might have been a Kevin smith podcast. Also I think she’d work well as a flash villain, because they’re both fast, but she’s got the verticality which would make it hard for flash to catch her, also you could do some stuff with how flash realizes he needs to take it slow every once in a while or something, anyways great vid!
