- "The Ultimate Thrill" is a fun romp that doesn't take itself too seriously, and while that may not always work for this series, it worked in this case. Join Walter as he continues his deep dive into The New Batman Adventures.

I'd argue that the sexy henchwomen thing works for Penguin, at least more so than Mr. Freeze. Having a high-end club an running it as he does, it'd help to have a force of competent 'eye candy' that can serve as eyes and ears keeping tabs on Gotham's elite while being able to serve as security as needed, really fits in this case.
Agreed, it was weird for Freeze but it fits right in for Penguin
Not to mention Bruce Timm's art gallery has a naughty section
Exactly! I came to the comments section to say the same thing, lol 😅.
Roxy Rocket: "Oh, baby! You're the best! The Ultimate Thrill! The final stunt! Me and you! Yeah. . . Yeah. .! YE-AH!"
She had a climax at the episode's climax.
I'll have what she's having.
A champagne cork pops
You know, for kids!
A faaaamily picture!
the 'sexy minions' thing actually works for Cobblepot , its very much on brand while the Ice Maidens were NOT on theme for Victor....i'd have loved if he had a bunch of Ice cannon armed robots or something.
The only way I can see the ice maidens thing working is if they were groupies that fell for Freeze when they heard his story but even then I doubt he’d actually use them
Yea. They work with most villains except freeze, and someone like clay face.
The robots you mentioned would make sense.
A group of scientist, or disaffected people in general. People who could identify with his misanthropy.
Or like ice villains, some minor ones.
Maybe one girl who's dressed like it's really cold. Like the Joker mostly just had Harley.
The ones in the freeze episode were more like a Halloween costume of people dressed for a cold theme.
Maybe it's a unionized group of henchgirls who just hench for whoever's got a scheme running this week.
@@adamloga3788 Crime rate in Gotham falls by 5% as Henchwench local number 333 goes on strike demanding employer provided medical care for on injuries sustained while on the job….
@@adamloga3788 Maybe it's the same union as the women in that Phineas and Ferb episode who sang "Impress My Professor."
Hilary J.Bader: "How many dirty jokes do you want for the Roxy episode, Bruce?"
Bruce Timm: "YES"
I mean this is work if either had written this episode.
Don't you mean, "YEAAAAAH!"

The scene with Batman and Penguin in the penthouse still hits hard.
"What say we have a little talk? Just like old times..."
Yeah…that was intense. It showed a level of anger and hatred.
While Cobblepot seems to enjoy his new position as head of the Iceberg Lounge, it can't be fun getting violently interrogated whenever Batman needs info on another criminal. At best, you make an enemy of that criminal. At worst...
I was surprised Penguin used an ordinary Tommy Gun instead of a trick umbrella in that scene
Batman: "And you're sure your sources are good?"
Batgirl: "Depends on your definition of good, but I trust them"
Roxy Rocket is a fascinating character, for a number of reasons, and if she'd debuted earlier in the series she could have become almost as popular as Harley Quinn. What I like about her isn't just the fact that her rocket fits right in with the steampunk/neo-Deco style of the animated series (though if she really existed she'd probably be something less fanciful and risky, such as a skydiver). There's also the fact that, unlike most of the other members of the Rogues' Gallery, she isn't afraid to die, and in fact would prefer to be dead than have her inhibitions restrained. This gives her a modern edge, even if her tastes are a little old-fashioned.
“Try not to get too excited watching it.”
I make no promises!
Penguin’s henchwomen actually make sense for a guy running a nightclub.
Mr. Freeze’s seem a tad suspect since he’s the more utilitarian type.
I still think Freeze's were robots.
Not to mention that he really loves his wife.
Roxie Rocket was one of the most criminally underrated criminals in Gotham. She only appeared once in this series, once in the Superman Animated Series and, I think, a spinoff series focusing on the Birds of Prey that never aired. Pity she never had a chance to shine or become as popular like Harley Quinn did.
I meant she did make appearance in the main DC Comics but was heavily used much like Harley. She only appear in minor cameos.
I’m honestly shocked she never took off (no pun intended) she really feels like a character that fans would go gaga over. Especially nowadays.
@@zacharybartolo5111 Hey , never apologize for a good pun.
Didn’t she make an appearance in a JLU episode as a pilot of a spaceship? I remember that she wasn’t committing any crimes in the episode and giving a few JL members a lift to a distant planet as a taxi driver.
@@kenthuang436 Wrong Justice League cartoon. You're thinking of Justice League Action, not Justice League Unlimited.
Roxy was able to outrun the censors but still couldn't escape Batman.
Roxy Rocket would've made for a fun villain to have seen appear in Batman Arkham Knight. Imagine chasing her around Gotham in the Batmobile.
All while making you do some serious stunts while *ahem* getting off on seeing you stick the landing. 😏
Oh that would be fun! Maybe like a little mini racing game.
You mean like firefly?
Definitely would have fit Roxy better than Firefly
That Penguin interrogation scene is my favorite. Having that tommy gun pop out of that umbrella holder was epic and Batman threatening Penguin over the balcony was chef's kiss. Love it!
💯
I like how Batman through every interaction with Roxxie, he's like, "God damn it, not another female villain that wants my bat pole"
"Must be Tuesday."
But you know he's thinking to himself "Eh, who can blame them?".
Also, I don't mind that Penguin was given Playboy Bunnies as minions. It works for this character since he's basically Hugh Hefner if he was an arms dealer. Besides, at least they aren't ninja geishas with Lady Deathstrike claws. Seriously, what was up with that?
Omg that’s the best way to describe Penguin.
Roxy: OH YES! YES!
Estelle Reiner: I'll have what she's having.
Batman: "What say we have a little talk? Just like old times"
This episode hits differently when you watch as an adult😂😂😂
Also the only reason the farmer brown truck appeared was because the director was given the script for "Critters" at the same time
Batgirl's "sources" were reused in the Return of the Joker flashback
Didn't "Batgirl's 'sources'" have to be redrawn when they edited Return of the Joker for its original release?
It's not uncommon for characters to be attracted to Batman but Roxie was down horrendous!
I felt that Penguin's Waitress Henchgirls actually fitted his character very well. Underneath his charming facade, he's kind of a dirty bird, so of course he'd want minions he can oogle at leisure. Mr Freeze's Ice Maidens, though, were completely out of character for a man who only had eyes for Nora, and was well past having a libido by Cold Comfort.
It's true your honor, this man has no dick.
Batgirl: "And you that she a had a taste of you, she's not gonna settle for anything less"
Roxy Rocket manages to crank the innuendos up to 11. Even in a series that's known for female characters that the fans really get excited for. In more ways than one!
we need a tierlist of whos the best female baddie
@@aestheticswim3397 Roxy would probably be the most fun in bed.
@@aestheticswim3397 number 1: Poison Ivy
@@IamaPERSON solid b tier
@@aestheticswim3397 well, at least she’s in a higher tier. Who’s your favorite?
First, penguins interrogation is really iconic. Second, roxy is probably the most thirsty villain that it took 2 shows to contain her
Penguin: "Ever been pursued by a bird of prey?"
The action sequences in this episode are breathtaking. I love the exciting dynamic between Batman and Roxy Rocket, especially in the third act. Cool little nod to Farmer Brown as well.
*Fun fact:* The Farmer Brown logo was designed by the great Darwyn Cooke, the artist who wrote and drew the iconic miniseries "JLA: The New Frontier" and "Before Watchmen: Minutemen"
😃 And the Batman Beyond intro.
Wish we got more of Roxy. A fun character and episode with thrilling action.
This character does a cameo in one of my favorite animated Superman episodes. The one where Superman has to cosplay as Batman and beats the crap out of Bane.
The last act saves this one for me. Nice seeing the new Penguin is still dangerous (I wish the movie Iceberg Lounge looked like this instead of just a regular club). But before that, it's similar to the Firefly instalment in that there just isn't anything more to the new villain besides their gimmick. What made the original series great was how they were able to show us who these villains were as people, but the New Adventures doesn't do that as much. Still, once this episode really leans into Roxy's kink at the end, it gets fun. For consistency, I wish they maintained that level of fetishization in all her appearances, but they toned it down.
Roxie is that wild fling that reminds you that your heart still works. Selina is the other broken soul who’s jagged edges somehow somehow fit perfectly in your own and make you feel whole. Unless we’re Talking JLU, in which case Diana all the way
I always like that the Penguin has henchwomen as it not only sets him apart from most of the other villains but as many others pointed out it fits for him being a rich nightclub owner and an underground crime kingpin as no one (for the most part at least) will suspect him of doing anything shady if he’s got a bunch of sexy women around.
Also this is actually something he does in most properties that have him as a nightclub owner such as the comics and video games. Arkham City and Arkham Origins are a very good example of him employing women to do his dirty work behind the scenes.
Plus as you pointed out it is a change of pace from all the guy goons we get. It can be a bit stale and tiring to see a bunch of macho like guys (especially dumb ones which appears to be the common thing for many of these henchmen) always working for the villains. Having a bunch of women is a breath of fresh air in a sea of testosterones.
Poor Roxy. The girl just wanted to get Batman's attention with life-threatening skills, receiving only a pair of handcuffs from him. At least it's possible that Nightwing decided to visit her on Bruce's behalf to comfort her...
One of my top 10 favorite episodes, plus Roxy Rocket is such an underrated and fun villain, with a unique motivation of “looking for the ultimate thrill”, especially compared to all of the other Batman‘s villains
3:10 Roxy, if you really find TNBA Penguin's appearance "scary", then you'd better never know about his original series' design...
I know right, his design here looks much tamer compared to the old design of the classic series and the live-action movie.
He doesn't even look that frightening. Really, the only thing that'd be unusual would be the nose.
Quoting from Love Is A Croc: "I don't want to think about it"
I've been watching each episode right before these vids comes out. A Tradition I started with the first "Bat-May"😅 I have to say that these videos are a great companion piece to the series. Great Stuff Channel Awesome 🦇
I hate that I didn't think this back then. Having episode fully fresh in the mind would be great and even helpfull
Thus begins the long introduction of weird ass new villains. Firefly doesnt count, hes in a league of his own
3:10
C’MON, IT WAS RIGHT THERE.
“Sorry Honey, Penguins can’t fly.”
every one talks about Harley and Livewire but Roxie gets forgotten about. Even Baby Doll gets more attention.
Yeah, I guess the risque elements of this episode were hard to ignore, but I like the Roxy Rocket character is spite of that. When I first heard the name, I imagined a sci-fi circus performer getup with a giant jetpack, but the aviator design and rideable rocket work better for her anyway. Plus, the idea of a former stuntwoman turned adrenaline junkie thief is a fun concept on its own
Not really sure what the complaint is about Penguin having a few henchwomen is. With Mr. Freeze, you had a point with it being odd, not entirely fitting Freeze's earlier appearances (again, neither did the episode itself). With Penguin, though, it makes perfect sense since he has some muscle hiding in plain sight and fits his goal of being outwardly legitimate while not having to have two separate staffs, one for each kind of operation (legal and illegal).
I like the idea that Mr. Freeze's henchwomen and Penguins henchwomen are the same people, just going through a henchmen temp agency.
Roxy Rocket was a REALLY fun and underrated character, and I was psyched to see her pop up again in Justice League Action.
"Need I say more?" 😂
I never really understood this stuff when I was a kid, although I guess I did chuckle at how she's always straddling a long, phallic object. As an adult...I actually think that Roxy Rocket is kind of hot
Of all the useless suddenly appearing female henchmen, I will admit that the penguin girls had my favorite design. Cute and kinda silly in a very comic book way. I could have seen them becoming more interesting as, maybe, working girls who have a job with way too many benefits to walk away from and so end up as a 9-to-5 recurring henchwoman deal. Even working with batgirl because they're not evil, just good employees.
Roxy Rocket hits differently as an adult than watching this as a kid. Even though all the inuendo flew over my head I'm still a little surprised this got past network censors.
Love this episode and loving this month more by the day!😊😊🎉🎉
The ending to the episode was pretty good, that line from Kevin gets me every time.
-Roxy: “w-what’s this?”
-Batman: “My kind of game, and you lost.”
Taking a trip down memory lane with these segments from TNBSA . I remember the hour long block and the crossovers …….You ARE gonna do the crossovers right?😊🤔
Man, I miss those days... 📺
World's finest already happened at this point so no
Oh yes the episode where the bad guy orgasms before the big climatic explosion
Batman on the Never Fear gas and Roxy Rocket would be a crazy match
Ah, the episode that featured a scene or two that raised a few eyebrows....along with some other things depending on your tastes.
Damn, even though the DCAU is already full of s*xual innuendo, Bruce Timm really went nutty with this episode, especially the part where Roxy screams numerous times "YEAH" with absolute excitement as her phallic-shaped rocket explodes. I bet this episode is one of the biggest examples that Rorschach gives while explaining how morally cursed society is.
yeah well maybe it's just me but I think that Roxy Rocket was Timm's version for Xenia Onnatop from Goldeneye, then again maybe I'm reading too much into this.
As a certain critic in a black hat, suit jacket and red neck tie would say...
czcams.com/video/clgfRkyGqrc/video.html
I got no problem with innuendos.
Wasn't there an episode with the Birds of Prey as lounge signers and they use a lyric about Penguin's _little fish_ and _another episode of Harley covered in _white cream?_
And to think ... this is actually Tame these days lol
Man I remember the first time I saw this and that awkward moment when I realised how happy and satisfied Roxy was getting!
Walter is just knocking it out of the park each episode like every damn time! Thought I wouldn’t enjoy this season as much once were outside of the original run…but the insights he’s bringing to the table make it worth it. Great job man. A lot of hard work for our benefit!!
Bat-May Day 18.
Man bruce timm must have had a LOT OF FUN with Roxy
This episode definitely raised a lot of questions from parents.
The most memorable henchwomen for the Penguin are the Kabuki Twins from The Batman (2004). Hell, they even appeared in The Lego Batman Movie !
They did?
@@radim279 Yes.
When I was a kid, my parents got box sets for all of the DCAU series for all our various road trips. We watched this episode once, and I never understood why they forbade me from watching this particular episode afterward. Guess I understand now. 😂
Really nothing compared to Jessica Rabbit.
Penguin's Henchgirls work better than Mr. Freeze's snow/ice Maidens.
I remember when I first started watching TnBS, it was my old teacher of all people who told me about this episode. “I swear to god. There’s an episode of Batman TAS where the villainess has an orgasm on screen”
Penguin has the best excuse for his redesign, IMHO. I can see him getting plastic surgery on his hands and slimming fown to better sell his "reformed" self, while keeping the nose to hint he's still not ashamed to be who he is.
Roxy in TNBA: “Yeah! Yeah! YEAHHH!!”
Jean Grey in X-Men: “Hold my ‘AHNNN!!’s”
Underrated comment.
“Off to jail for you……and can we get a mop?”
Thanks for "The Ultimate Thrill" to review this episode on my birthday, thank you so much Walter.
Now here is an episode I absolute adore! XD
I picture her more as a 30s futurism themed villain for Superman.
She did fight Superman once
The innuedos that roxy saids in this episode is so double entendre it kind of makes you wonder if batman was getting off on this as well too since he was so used to it by the Gotham sirens Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and Catwoman.
I think Roxy's a fun character that should be used more. Then again, I suppose her character already had a, ah, pretty satisfying climax.
Roxy was one of the best and funniest villains from this series
Obviously it was Bruce Timm behind all the sexy henchmen. This is the same guy who had every woman including batgirl in love with Batman.
Man, batman be gettin' all the ladies.
Here's some food for thought: Bombshell Harley Quinn rides a rocket and has a bomber jacket. Both have that classic pin-up model style paying homage to the classics and both are in theme given BTAS's Gothdeco vibe and Bombshell being set during WW2. To this day I swear this is a nod to Roxie Rocket. This is honestly one of the absolute favorite episodes in the DCAU, from the music to the pacing, and honestly just how fun it is. Roxie herself is absolutely infectious and in an alternate timeline could've easily taken the place of Catwoman. To this point in the series, there was never really another female villain that could keep up with Batman, let alone take him down a peg (in Roxie's case TWO).
Both Selina and Roxie gave Batman the rush, the chase that we find he's always looking for, and although Selina and Roxie could resort to violence, I wouldn't call them "murderers" or on the level of other characters like Poison Ivy or Harley even. I think Roxie brings out a different side of Bruce, something that I feel like Selina doesn't, it's not the same kind of "thrill". Selina is the "safe" option in a lot of ways, where as Roxie is the.. dare I say it.. "risky" option.
But I think that's what's so enjoyable about the dichotomy between these two characters, it's Batman being put in an uncomfortable position, having to bring out parts of him that literally no other woman has brought out in the ENTIRE series up until this point.
Now I wish her original story was adapted into the show because more Selina Kyle? Count me in. Also roxy has black red shaded hair and a dimple. She's basically Mary Jane Watson lol.
Wow. They actually managed to sneak in an 'ending' for a cartoon character on this show...Damn BTAMS, legendary.~
Lets gooo new episode!!
You also have to remember when this show was on and how the execs wanted to tie as much as possible to the movies and so given Two-Face’s hench women in Batman Forever it made sense they would want to replicate that.
Now I want to see what would happen if Roxy had a run in with Scarecrow!
Huh... just noticed the transition into henchwomen, it gives the rogues a rockstar appeal with all the chicks with guns n suits😂
But I do miss the lovable goons of yesteryear, great analysis as always
Great…. And I just finally got the scene from “When Harry met Sally” from my head. I wonder how many others will quote the line.😂😂🎉😂😂
"I'll have what she's having."
Last I ever saw of Roxy was in Curse of the White Knight, where she was slaughtered among all of Bat's other rogues by Azrael.
This episode. . .this episode taught me some things about myself very early on in life XD
Penguin with hench-girls make sense (with a double up on waitress jobs). They should have had men with them dressed as security guards, showing that the people on his pay-roll double work.
I had no idea that Firefly and Roxy were original Batman characters before now.
I also forgot that they existed until now. Been too long since I watched New Batman. All I remembered about it were the villain redesigns, Mr. Freeze's and Harley's redemptions each doing a 180, and a random episode featuring a literal demon.
I like Roxy a lot! Great episode! The bat glider is really cool too! This is another good episode where you don’t have to think too hard, just sit back and enjoy it! Definitely enjoying Bat May!
5:04 - 5:28 & 7:32 - 7:36 Cinema Snob: "🙄🤷♂️And *then,* they banged!"
All joking aside, there is potential for Roxy Rocket as a rogue or maybe anti-hero.
I've never seen this ep, going to check it out
6:48 oh this was definitely a Bruce Timm thing.
Penguin Thungs nether bothered me cause it fits the who aspects of Penguin running iceberg lounge.
Mr freeze henchwomen dosnt work cause Freeze sometimes work alone and use hench people for help.
Mentioning this episode is the most screen time Penguin has in this version of Batman the Animated Series, it got me wondering, will Mystery of the Batwoman be included in this Bat-May, as that was even more time for Penguin.
Also, that movie's Mystery really was a mystery for me because I watched the movie for the first time AFTER having seen season 1 of CW's Batwoman, so while I thought I knew who Batwoman was going to be, that foreknowledge actually allowed the movie to throw me off several times and keep me guessing, which made it even better
Well I never liked that they recast the Penguin in that animated movie and prefer the original design because he feels like a supervillain and also stands out more and another thing is that this Penguin has so much potential like say he was in Justice league and Batman Beyond
I don’t what your talking about. 205x is a perfectly healthy amount of times to replay the last 5 minutes of this episode…
The Roxy Rocket theme was great. It has a definite John Williams Star Wars vibe to it.
I think penguin having female thugs works really well, and is a lot better than Mr.Freeze inexplicably having them.
The villains are equal opportunity employers
One thing I remember here is how Batman remained unfazed while her rocket speeds its way to the cliff. Just like Roxxy, I did feel a rush thinking how will he get them out of that mess? I was young back then so I'm easily impressionable.
"Penguin turns on Roxy."
I doubt it.
As others have said, for how much of a flirt Penguin is and portrayed as part of the elite, it makes sense for him to surround himself with beautiful women as a sort of status symbol. Heck, Bruce used to play up his persona the same way maybe having a date on each arm at a fancy gathering.
But Mr. Freeze? That makes no sense. For one, even if we're supposed to believe he's trying to move on from Nora, you'd think having all these girls around would be rubbing salt in the wound and the fact he can't touch them even if there was supposed to be some appeal there. Who are they dressing up for? Secondly, pun probably intended, but a big part of his character is just how isolated he is. He has speeches how no one could understand the suffering he has from being unable to be part of the world. Unable to take part in its small pleasures like the feel of the sun and being somewhat ageless means watching those around him grow up and move on in their lives in ways he can't. It's part of why he works so well is he can do a LOT of damage while working alone. He's a villain who doesn't need lackeys. Buuuut given the twist they gave him that he's barely functioning anymore, it would make sense he'd have some hired help, like maybe a scientist or engineer (maybe multiple ) back at his base to help maintain his armor, which kinda went with the plot? But it still doesn't suit him to have hired muscles with guns helping him in his field activities.
I actually didn't remember anything about this episode and now uou have me wondering if I honestly never caught this ine as a kid. Its funny though because i didn't think i ever watched the TNBA series much as a kid, but I've recognized every episode so far.
