When we go to the pool, I like to carry around my husband. He's about twice my size, and I have no problem carrying him around. So Gabe is in the water with Tina, and he can't hold her, even though they both have buoyancy vests? I call BS.
What a horrific way to die. Poor Tina.

When I was a green diver there was a man twice my weight that had a seizure right next to me. It was my 4th ever dive. I grabbed him, dropped my weights and inflated BC. It was easy to get us both to surface and I was in no way trained to do that.
Karma will get you Gabe you awful beast

Wow, that's awesome and you're amazing in an emergency! What does the "BC" stand for in "inflated BC"? I have never dove and don't understand all of this technical detail being provided, but the narrator is so good I can almost understand it, lol. I've never been a big water person - too big of a sissy I suppose. I hit pause at exactly the 40 minute mark - this is right after the older gentleman told Gabe "Please tell me you didn't leave her - you never leave your buddy!" - and I am thinking to myself, based on what Gabe said about Tina having knocked his mouth piece or regulator out, that by the time he readjusted himself/got himself properly situated, she was too far down, feet first" - does a buddy have to stick with a buddy even if it means 2 people could/would die instead of just the one person who got into trouble? Sorry if my question doesn't make sense.

Absolutely terrific research! Excellent! I'm a driver and his story made zero sense. I remember when this happened. Poor Ms. Watson. 😭 My hubs is a big guy and I'm 4'11" and I guarantee you I could get us both to the surface. Drop all weights, inflate the BC's and up you'll go with some kicking. Also I have an integrated BC and it's really easy to drop weights. The would-be rescuer should have pulled both of their weights, but he was at least strong enough to get them both up. That detail has always bothered me too. I once had an issue at 60' with my regulator. Fought panic for most of the dive. Ended up signaling that I wanted to go up early. Bought new BC and reg the VERY NEXT DAY. Pretty sure though if the reg had stopped working I would have just grabbed hub's spare and he would have known instantly something was wrong and pulled us both to surface. Better possible bends than certain drowning.

I scuba dive and it can be a dangerous activity. That is, if you don't have the proper training, are dishonest about your training and Gabe's your diving buddy.
I've dived with just myself and my buddy and groups... no one ever leaves their buddy. Especially if you're more experienced.
Unfortunately, Tina was in an emotionally abusive relationship and he made her feel lucky to have him.
Had she just said what her dad told her to say about Gabe's engagement ring, she would be alive today.

In many states lesser included offenses are automatically on the table. Thus, if this were the case in Alabama the judge would have had to determine that the proof didn't support any lesser included charge. As I understood it the only charges that could be considered would have had to involve intentional acts ie a kidnapping and intent to cause her death in Australia so something like a second degree murder or manslaughter which usually involve more immediate causation but not premeditation, wouldn't have been possible to prosecute in Alabama. What nobody seems to recognize is just how sharp and courageous the Alabama judge was. He understood and followed the law rather than succumb to political and public sentiment pressure. Yes, no doubt sometimes the end result may be egregious if in fact this guy was a murderer but history is repeat with prosecutions where the innocent have been railroaded by prosecutions only later exposed as erroneous. For every DNA reversed conviction there are probably a dozen bad ones that will never be exposed. If the Dive company had followed their required protocols this guy could have never pulled off a premeditated murder. They were fined 6500 dollars. Testimony from anyone employed by that company, like the oft quoted Cruise director ( or whatever his title was) must be considered in that light. Likewise, damning statements from fellow divers taken years later, following less damaging statements given immediately after the incident need to be scrutinized. Anyone who thinks those witnesses weren't poisoned by investigators before giving those statements the second time around is naive. after the incident of

I was certified as a scuba diver when I was in 8th grade. It is a dangerous activity, but pretty basic. It has been 35 years since I dived, but helping yourself or you buddy is pretty straight forward. Never separate from your dive buddy. Keep your regulator in your mouth (air source). If you get in trouble, safety ascend by slowly inflating your BC (buoyancy control device) and steadily exhaling, keeping in mind the expanding air in your lungs. Drop weight if you have to. Last ditch strategy, if your equipment fails: buddy breathing and ascend to the surface with the help of your dive partner. You have to demonstrate this knowledge and mastery of these skills to be certified, so I am not sure what broke down here.
Definitely some strangeness happening. I don't buy it. Pre-existing heart issue did not contribute, and there was nothing wrong with her equipment. Just weird. Why did he add more weight? How did she drown with the regulator in her mouth? Why didn't she inflate her BC? Why did he leave his buddy? He could have gotten to her - swim down, deflate BC. Also, why such a slow ascent? Dude was in no hurry. Makes absolutely no sense. And he had rescue training, too?! There is definitely more to this story...

@@valkyriesardo278 You called it. Being a coward or a jerk doesn't equal being a murderer. Obviously he wasn't as experienced a diver as he claimed. The bottom line in cases like this is that we either stick to a rule of law that distinguishes us as having the best legal system in the world insofar as protection of personal rights and freedoms or we start bending the rules to convict those that may, if all was fair in the world, rightly deserve it even when guilt beyond a reasonable doubt can't be established. Who knows whether or not this guy's acts were intended to end her life or whether they were criminally negligent or just the acts or omissions of a panicked, cowardly or inept dive partner. But when you start stringing together innuendo and stories that make someone out to be an ass but not directly relevant it's a very slippery slope. Especially when so many cops and prosecutors are more attuned to getting a conviction than getting to the truth of the matter.

You don't go 50/50 on a honeymoon. Find some activity that both of you would enjoy. If you can't make that happen for a mere week or two, you have no business getting married for life. The foundation of a marriage is built on common ground. If you are doing trade offs right out of the gate, it does not bode well. Tina was out of her depth with scuba (pardon the expression). Gabe knew that and pushed her anyway and she allowed herself to be coerced. They both lied to the team leads. Do team leads verify the claims of their guests or is that not feasible?

A woman should never accept being with a controlling man in order to not be alone.
It's better to be safe and alone, as opposed to being in dangerous company.
    RIP Tina 🙏🏾

I think she really wanted to marry someone, because her friends all got married. So she married Gabe, because he proposed to her. I think she was a nice person, more quiet and that's why Gabe and her other boyfriend before him were so toxic towards her, because she let them (not saying it's her fault, I'm saying if you're a quiet person toxic people act arrogant towards you and you let them, because you're quiet so they become even more aggressive, because they're assholes). That's the reason she didn't tell him she doesn't want to dive and that ultimately let to her death. I think Gabe was full of shit and an asshole and he should be held accountable for involuntary manslaughter.

Such a fascinating and terrible crime story. Gabe clearly had issues and shows signatory signs of being a narcissistic type personality. He obviously thought that the insurance had been made to make him the beneficiary, and if that is the motive one can assume this was planned before the honeymoon. One can only imagine the horror Tina felt when she realized what he was doing. I really feel for Tina's family. .their dislike for Gabe was well founded. With narcissistic types the family and friends can see something is wrong . Those in a relationship with them are so confused by the charm, the gaslight ing and the lies they find it difficult to justify any gut instinct.

He didn't. The defense case was never heard because the States proof sucked. The real crime is to have publicized juror statements that they would have convicted when they never heard any of the defenses case. You can be sure they would have produced a qualified expert witness ( like the one in Australia who had a completely different opinion and was retained by the Crown, not the defendant early in the investigation. If there is any plausible alternative explanation then a jury as a matter of law cannot convict. This is a specific instruction given to juries. This being the case how could any jury convict someone of kidnapping and premeditation in Alabama before the trip. This judge did the taxpayers a favor by not permitting some grandstanding prosecutor to pursue a ridiculous case. It's pretty embarrassing for a case to be thrown out at that stage for a prosecutor but shame on him. I'm not saying this guy couldn't have been guilty but everyone needs to play by the rules.

Neither of them really knew what they were doing (apparently he needed help putting his diving gear on), and she had a heart condition that she didn’t disclose to the diving company. It seems like what happened is that she had a medical emergency, or some other sudden problem with her equipment. And instead of trying to help her or bring her to the surface, he panicked and abandoned her to save himself. He still could have planned this and done it on purpose, but the other scenario seems more likely to me.

Excellent podcast. I would hold Wade Singleton entirely responsible for her death, but he not just got away... but looked like a hero... thanks to Tina's dad hellbent on being vindictive in his grief, playing a strong PR game to woo public opinion! Which is as always hungry for a dramatic gossip filled story about a bride being killed by her groom... goodness and on her honeymoon... As against a death due to negligence during an adventure activity! There's no movie in that story!
Her dad sounded like a control freak who couldn't bear to give up his parental control even before the marriage. The reverend talks about Tina having to deal with that. Her mother's response to Gabe's mother's invitation at the time of the wedding was unnecessarily harsh and bitter. What was the family dynamic that Tina was trying to get away from? Her Dad lost the ability to control her but appears to have controlled the narrative.
This is high risk adventure sport... that normal insurance doesn't cover!! Safety protocol is defined and MUST ALWAYS be stricly adhered to... FOR A REASON! She had demonstrated being uncomfortable under water to the point of panic in previous, much safer conditions. The protocol would have saved her life... instead they literally let her life slip thru the cracks, and then Wade swims in for accolades for bringing her body up!
If the investigation hadn't gone hunting for evidence that didn't exist, attempting to pin the blame on the callous cowardly groom... there was ample evidence that the dive team, lead by Wade was solely responsible for her safety, had taken her money for it... and they failed her! The fine they had to pay for their criminal negligence was a joke!

  • @michaelmedicworldoftanks33fps

I don't think he wanted to take her on that dive to specifically drown her and for the people that say so or claim that "something wasn't right" all they have to do is pretend that they plan to drown someone deliberately on a dive trip like that and say to themselves does that sound right as a plan and of course it doesn't because you don't know how many divers gonna be involved, how far divers are going to be away from you, above you, behind you and all that, will the victim fight back, will the victim escape to surface before you, will you have to strangle them to achieve this, will they scratch your neck and head, or will they willingly just slowly sink just like that helping you 99% to drown them, this absurd thinking similar to witchunts of the innocent without any rational or slightest of evidence. As for any insurance I suppose anyone involved in high risk activity would wanna fill out a policy or two just in case anything bad happens. And as for the smart Alec that said "dead people sink" can he explain to me how hundreds of people are found unconcious on bottom of 3m deep public swimming pools all over the world every summer? How all those people sink and drown or lose consciousness driving in 3m pools? The answer is it's happening all the time and people are not supermen to think that everyone is stronger than nature if "trained" to do some crazy dangerous stuff.
