    I wanted to take a minute and extend a BIG thank you to you and the other folks at JayzTwoCents for all your helpful videos. I've been wanting to build my own PC for about 15 years now, but as a single-income family, I didn't want to commit and potentially waste any of our precious budget. Your videos gave me the insight and the confidence to finally take the plunge. 51 is probably a bit along to start in the PC build area, but better late than never. With an old but basically unused Antec Nine Hundred case and 650W power supply I already had, I was able to build a respectable rig for under $1000 even having room in the budget to take advantage of a Be Quiet fan sale and replace all the 120mm fans ( the 200mm had an unusual mount that prevented replacement). Your "what to do after you've built your PC" video was a particular lifesaver as I was way out of my element there. Thanks and high fives all around. Have an awesome day.

      First of all - Congrats on your new PC!
      There's no age limit to start a new hobby and enjoy what life has to offer. Some people discover new interests long after their retirement just because they suddenly have the time.
      Technology made such huge leap not only in the past decades, but even just in the past years, that people who have been building PCs for just 10 years work with completely different technological abilities compared to what we have today. Even though the typical consumer doesn't really *need* the latest products, there are still constant improvements and new things coming out.

      I‘d disagree. 6 cores just won‘t cut it anymore until next gen. I‘d always consider buying a 8 core or more if you‘re building now. Or you‘ll have to upgrade sooner as you wanted. And if you aren‘t short on money or don‘t have money issues, hell buy the best off the shelf.

    I would do a hybrid build: A Ryzen 5600(X), with a cheaper but solid motherboard, the MSI B550-A Pro, the rest of the build would be more or less the same with some small savings here and there, in which case there should be just about enough cash left to upgrade the 3060 Ti to a 3070.

    3060ti is on average 2% slower than the 6700xt at 1080p.
    Same performance at 1440p.
    And 3% faster at 4k.
    According to Hardware Unboxed 50 game average benchmark.
    Choices should consist mostly of DLSS vs having more vram for 4k.

Not sure where you got the information about needing an i7 to stream but that is just wrong. The same goes for the ryzen build. A 5600x is more than capable for a streaming rig. Hopefully I can save you or someone else some money in the future.

    • @doabrad1850
      @doabrad1850 Před 2 lety +1

      @@nattylightbro Yup. As an example, from what I've seen from GamersNexus and other places, despite having two fewer cores and four fewer threads, an i5-12400 gets impressively close to an i9-9900K in core heavy applications. Gaming wise, the 12400 usually takes the win due to its much better IPC and higher L3 cache (18Mb versus the 16Mb of the 9900K). It goes to show that there's more to CPU performance than just how many cores and threads it has. I mean, a Xeon E5-2690 v3 has 12 cores and 24 threads, yet, despite that, because it's a CPU from 2014 and processor IPC wasn't nearly as good back then, the E5-2690 v3 gets absolutely demolished by the i5-12400. A strong six-core/twelve-thread CPU is more than enough for streaming. Also, in terms of live streaming, considering that nowadays most modern Nvidia and AMD GPUs come built-in with streaming encoders, it makes the performance of the CPU far less important since, at least with most modern AMD GPUs, it's possible to live stream directly from the Radeon Adrenaline software. Additionally, from what I've tested, streaming and recording through Radeon Adrenaline is much less demanding than doing those things via OBS, so having a mega powerful processor for streaming isn't nearly as crucial as it was in say, 2014. Over the last few years, so much misinformation has been spread in that anything less than eight cores and sixteen threads is absolute garbage, when in reality, that couldn't be further from the truth since the performance of a CPU is dependent on many more factors than just the number of cores and threads it has.

    Jay, about your criticism of VAT: it's just a different name for what you call sales tax.
    Well, there are a few differences:
    1. It's included in the price; the price you see is the price you pay - the whole tax thing happens between the seller & the government (Inland Revenue in our case 🇬🇧).
    2. Sure, prices can vary from 1 part of the country to another in different stores, but if it's the same company then it'll *usually* be the same price. If you're ordering online, the only difference (from the same site) between 1 part of the country & another is usually postage, & even then it's probably only if you live on some island or whatever that isn't connected with a road bridge.
    3. Unless we run our own business, or earn *significantly* more than average, then we don't have to keep all our receipts for a yearly grovelling for approval before the tax overlords.

    Jay.. nice build lists. I guess the step would be to get them, build them, and then have them go head to head to see if paper performance matches real life. What would be an interesting test would be to do a blind gaming test where you or one of your crew gamed on each not knowing which was which. Then see if they could tell the difference.. You mentioned this about the NVME I believe, that while there is a difference on paper, actually noticing that difference is a completely different scenario.

      @:D yeah but paring a highend gpu, like the 6800xt, doesnt feel right for me. i have heard that only 6 normal cores can be a bottle neck too. not that it does that often but sometimes you can have weird frame drops and if the game can make use of more threads, then it could be a smoother experience overall. of course, future proofing stuff is kind of a complicated topic but having those 4 extra efficency cores, plus more single core power on those 6 normal cores, will benefit you, in the long run, i think. but yeah, a 5600 or 12400f isnt a bad cpu. you could go for b660 gaming x and a 12400f insead of a ryzen 5600. the intel is cheaper and you could still upgrade to 12600k/kf or 12700k/kf in the future. i would suggest the b660 gaming x for ddr4 motherboard. it has a real nice build quality, vrms, features in general. it doesnt have wifi though.

    I kinda disagree with the choice of the 11th Gen Intel. If you get a 12th Gen Intel, you'll be able to upgrade the CPU once 13th Gen comes out because Intel isn't changing the socket type. And if you buy a MOBO that supports DDR4, you can still make use of the better processor. Also, the i5-12400 is better that the i7-11700 isn't it? And almost $100 less. Another thing too is the 3060 Ti. The new 6650 XT is virtually identical, performance wise, in 1080p and can be had for just over $400. So basically, you can do better, for less, with the 12th gen Intel and 6650 XT.

      plus z590 only supports 1 gen 4 drive. Z690 can give you like 4 to 5 gen 4 drive options. 12600k would be like 200-250 dollars so cheaper than 11700k and faster in both single threaded and multi threaded. And 200 bucks will get you a solid msi z690 a pro motherboard. And like you said you can upgrade to raptor lake which will have up to 24 core and 32 threads. Plus you get gen 5 pcie and much more pcie lanes from the chipset.

The Supernova GA is one of those units that can't deal with the transient spikes of higher end Ampere cards, so any headroom you have is more or less wasted.

    Well, Jay's 2020 build guide is what got me into custom building, but even back then I didn't take it as gospel. Do your homework and don't be afraid to tweak for your preferences
    I can find a 5800X3D for $470; not sure where Jay is pulling that $600 tag from. $300 is a weird price point for a CPU; you're spending more than you "need," but not enough to go premium. Also, AMD's "official" spec for their CPUs lists 3200 RAM speed, so I would stick with that (tighten timings if you're willing to spend more). 99.99% chance the 3600 runs just fine, but if you go to expand with a second kit later, higher clockspeed kits are less likely to play nice with each other.

I only stuck the Vetroo in there because I was RMA'ing the Arctic Liquid freezer due to a little VRM fan squeal, the Vetroo isn't even close to the LF II 280mm performance, but it's good enough that I still haven't had the motivation to swap the CLC back in.
      I admit that the 5900x has the advantage of only having six cores per CCX vs the 8 core CCX in the 5800x, and I also have a ton of airflow with a P500A with six 140mm fans, but I also run an RTX 3080 which is like a mini-nuke.

  • @SlamTF2
    @SlamTF2 Před rokem +21

    This is a great and informative video, but there are a couple of disagreements I have with the philosophy of these builds, especially the AMD build:
    1) There seems to be a bit too much of a focus on RGB. RGB is great, but if you're going $1500 there's a lot more to be had by saving even $75-100 by not focusing on RGB things. Now granted RGB is really fun and cool, and if it's something that makes a person happy then it can be worth it, but you don't need to spend $25-$50 extra for a motherboard with fancy RGB effects or etc if your tower is just gonna be under your desk never being looked at.
    2) There is absolutely no reason to get a 5800x over a 5600x or 5600 non-X if you're just doing gaming and don't care about streaming/video editing (so 95%+ of PC gamers) and don't plan on playing only extremely CPU-demanding games like Cities Skylines. In most non-cpu-intensive games the framerate difference, including 1% lows, is within 1-2%, and if you give the 5600 a modest overclock it'll match the 5800x in almost anything that isn't CPU-bottlenecked. The $100+ saved there gets you super close or right at the budget room to upgrade the GPU to the next step up, which will be a far, far greater FPS bump than the 1% at best the 5800x will give. (Yes, 6 cores will still cut it for a LONG time. There's no reason to believe that 6 cores will become a bottleneck when even brand new AAA non-console-port releases can't use more than 6-8 threads efficiently. Even if it ends up at a 5% performance loss from not having an 8 core, the performance gains from the upgraded GPU will more than offset that.)
    3) Unless there's a big enough sale to bring the price difference within 20-30 dollars, there is very little reason to get a X570 motherboard over a good quality B550 motherboard for the average gamer. At least in my mind there isn't. The average gamer doesn't need multiple gen 4 NVMe drives, they don't need ultra extreme overclocking potential, they don't really care if their motherboard runs 5 degrees hotter, and this is a $1500 budget build so nobody's thinking of SLI/X-Fire (not that anyone actually would with how few games support it anymore.)
    4) 1 TB of storage is NOT enough for modern gaming due to most modern AAA games being 50-100 GB in size, and heck if you're gonna do older games like Skyrim and mod them, you can easily rack up 75-100 GB of space used for just that. I'd try to save 50-100 bucks on the other components and get a second 1TB SSD. Totally fine for MOBA/FPS pros who only play 3 games, but not good enough for people with a large Steam library.
    Please let me know if my thinking is wrong in any of these points, but I definitely feel it's worth saving on some of those components, especially the CPU, to have either a higher GPU budget, or more money left over for games.
