  • With its tropical origins, it’s no surprise that Peperomia obtusifolia is popular. Often grown as a prized houseplant, the baby rubber plant loves its humidity, but can’t take cold temps. It’s surprisingly self-sufficient, and makes for a perfect green addition to your home.
Slender stems support fleshy, almost succulent-looking leaves. Whether it’s one of the multicolored varieties or all green, it’s quite a sight to behold. A perennial, it’s capable of living for years in the right environment. Inviting one of these beauties into your home is a joy!
So let’s talk about the “pepper face”, this sweet little gem amongst the varied peperomia species. We’ve collected all the tips you’ll need to grow your own. You’ll love the lush foliage it provides for you every year.

I actually did propagate mine in 3 ways.
      1. I cut a 4 inch piece off one stem, took off a number of the lower leaves and put remaining cutting in water. The cutting did root in a few weeks and I then added it to the same pot as the ‘mother plant’. Grew fine.
      2. I cut a 3 inch piece off another branch, removed a couple of bottom leaves and stuck the cutting directly into the same pot as mother plant. It rooted and eventually started growing new variegated leaves but it took about a year to do so.
      3. I took 4 of the cut leaves and plopped them into a small separate pot of soil and waited, and waited, and waited. Took over a year before I saw a new completely green baby leaf pop up thru the soil about an inch from one of the variegated leaves. When that baby leaf finally had 3 leaves, I dug it out , cut it off from the connected variegated leaf and planted the baby in a small pot of soil. Eventually all 4 of those variegated leaves had baby green leaves come up from the soil. So interesting that the variegated leaves reproduced all green babies where as the stem cuttings kept their variegation just fine. So now I have a nice full pot of variegated plant and a small pot of solid green plants.Nature is a wonder.

Please make a propagation video, I cut some branches of a beautiful plant when I realised I was losing it to root rot, and now you mention it, perhaps it didn't have enough light as well. So the cuttings were successful, and I've potted them from water, but every day, I'm anxiously looking at them bcos should the propagation fail, I will have lost the whole plant :( meanwhile, I've seen from your soil that mine may not have enough coco coir or peat in it. Thank you very, very much for your houseplant videos they are very informative and helpful. :)

What about leaves curly under? Mine is 1 foot from a north facing window, I'm in the southern hemisphere so it's strong indirect light. It has a well planter, where an inner pot sits inside a well and slowly soaks water in, that well water is replaced every week. The planter is porcelain. Top leaves are perfect, bottom leaves and new growth has it's leaves just on the edge curling under. To me this plant is getting enough light for sure and enough moisture around it without being wet. Top inch or so usually stay dry. Why is it doing this? No leaf drop or browning at all.
