My mother in law planted a rubber tree she received when her mother passed away. Today that rubber tree is 65+ yrs old and massive! It shades us and three neighbors, it’s a beauty🙌
I have had mine for 2.5 years 6 ft away from a south window, I rotate it once a week and only water it when it is dry, I clean the leaves once a month, it never seems to stop growining and the colours are amazing, it is one of my favourites and it is so easy.
Never seen a tiny rubber plant.. Only seen them super large.. My granddad might have seen them tiny when he planted them in our plantation. Lovely to see it tiny.. Feel kinda nostalgic.. Rubber trees.. Narrow twisty village roads ..mossy walls.. River to jump in when it got too hot.. Which was always. Some days I wish I could take people to that place I learnt so much.
@@epicgardening Hi. I bought a burgundy version. Grew very well for a couple weeks of buying. Then replotted it. Sprayed with water. Plant got white mildew and had to report again as the original mix just was holding water. Let's see how it recovers now in a dryer coir mix with perlite. Will get back to you with positive results 🤞🏼
My grandmothers rubber tree is about 29 years old, she had it as a house plant for the longest time and when we moved to Texas in 2004 we planted it in the bank yard and that thing has grown like crazy!
Brilliant. I just lost 70% of my leaves through overwatering and those that remain aren’t overly pretty. I think it’s time to try your rooting technique AND take out/change/refresh the soil to check for any stagnant water. My rubber plant and I thank you. 👩🏻🌾🇬🇧
I apologise if you have already covered this in a video, but if not, what is the difference between watering plants from the bottom or the top and which do you think is best? 😊
Seems to me like bottom watering is kinda advanced. For us dingus house plant owners, we should just get well draining soil so we don't water-log our plants. In other words let it drain out the bottom and let that be the end of it.
Thanks for the helpful info, great video! On propogation, I've found success just leaving a cutting in a vase of water mixed with rooting hormone for a week, removing excess leaves, and then planting.
I have two (variegated) tineke rubber tree plants; one directly in front of my east facing window and one directly in front of my west and neither is losing variegation. The one in front of the west window is just developing lovely medium pink in the leaves.
I was in the supermarket and they had a Burgundy , a Tineke and a Ruby for $5 each . When I got to the checkout they’d put it as a non taxable item and they only had the 3 of them. I bought the Ruby immediately and the following Friday, I purchased to other 2 . That was about 10 years ago . The Tineke died but the other 2 are over 3 feet tall (1 meter) . I found another Tineke recently but it’s only 1 foot tall . I wanted the old fashioned green variety because my grandmother had 2 that were huge , but I can’t find that one.
This particular species as well as all other indoor varieties are actually not used for their white rubber sap in any commercial way because there are other (outdoor only as far as I know) species that grow faster, produce more of the white sap or regenerate faster after sap has been withdrawn.
I live in Florida I see a lot of the black rubber trees planted in people's yards. You would be amazed how tall they are! I also just recently got the Tineke for 14 dollars at my local nursery. It's a very nice size. Really hoping to find a black one 😊🤞
My daughter recently gave me a beautiful variegated Rubber Tree. I’ve got some browning on my leaves. It’s not light so must be water. I didn’t repot it but I will tomorrow. Thank you for the information in your video!
I love that you use clay pots. Coming back to houseplant love after a long hiatus and I used to use clay pots , but many people today use plastic pots. Can you tell me about your preference.
Clay pots dry out better than plastic ones, plastic pots retain moisture more than clay ones, so depending on the type of plant and soil needs you could go either way.
I have the dark green one is growing like a monster. After hearing vídeo run to my plant to check on water logging since I had watered plenty few days ago. Full panic. Lol! Great video! Thank you!
If it is pests in the soil bake it. I got pests in my metal pot and I put it in the oven on 200° F for 30 minutes and then 300° F for and other 30 minutes. I have also put my clay pots in the oven. Just be aware and watch your pot.
Okay, so I recently watched another one of your videos when you dispelled the myth of the rocks at the bottom of the pot... I take it this video was made before that one?
I just purchased a burgundy rubber plant. I love it. My question is there are string like tendrils?? or something coming from the plant is this normal. Thank you. You are my favorite gardening video guy 🤣🤣
brought mine for £2.50 back in march before lockdown and since its grown 4 leafs just put a drainage hole in the bottom and feeding it and wipe down the leafs and yet i didnt know i was doing ok XD
I was told by other people as well as you to keep my veragated trees out of the window, but I'm.gurssing that's less true when I live in England and summer weather is everyone else's normal weather?

QUESTION My need rubber plant has some leaves that are curling inwards. What does this mean and how can I counteract it? Or is this completely normal and not a problem?
I thought the layer of rocks or gravels at the bottom of a pot actually do more harm than good to the roots. At least that's what you said in another video of yours..
I have had my plant for 5 years now. It is now to tall to bring in the house for the winter. How do I trim it down to bring it in. I can send you a pick of it so you will know just what it looks like if you need me to.
I had one last fall that would drop a leaf every week, no color change to the leaves or drooping. I haven't had the courage to buy one ever since. Too this day I still don't understand what happened
Very nice video! :) I was just surprised to hear the advice with rotating the pot. Recently I was reading that most ficus trees, especially benjamin ficus doesn't like being rotated or having their stand changed because they are very sensitive to the direction of the light reaching them. Doesn't it apply to ficus elastica as well? Btw. I would love to see a video about care, propagating and using Oregano cubano (Plectranthus amboinicus), it's very useful plant to grow at home as it has many applications.
I haven't noticed any ill effects by rotating! we must remember in the wild they are subject to MUCH more extreme conditions than indoors - will put plectranthus on the list!
My mother was given one as a gift to her when she was in the hospital. I am not good with growing trees- especially not indoors. How do we tell if we water it too much? Can solid green versions become variegated?
Mine is starting to have what looks like scratches, like a trail of a bug or something. Over time, the trail dries, splitting the leaf. Please advice :(

Got myself the same one you have in the video. Had it for two months now, lost 2 leaves and some others are going brown at the edges. I've only watered it when the soil was dry.
My rubber tree has started getting similar brown edges to the leaves, but instead of being dried and crispy like I'd expect a burn to be, they're sort of soft. I water a little less than once a week and the soil still feels fluffy even after watering. Could this still be over watering?
it could be, but I've noticed that rubber trees are also quite sensitive to environmental changes, so I would do an audit and see if anything has changed in your growing environment as well
I have two small red-brown rubber plants but one plant top broken I put the top one is in the water of a bottle and hope to get some roots. When will I report 4 inches to 6 inches? But still, get more new yellow leaves Nosun just light in the room from the windows. Not shades but?
I know this video is older, but I rescued a rubber tree plant from my office and it had two trees planted in one larger pot. Should i separate them? They're not looking so hot right now but I can't tell if that's just because they're mad that I moved them, or if they're killing each other in the one pot ):
I recently switched to making my own potting mix and I use coir, perlite, and worm castings. I add sand, orchid mix and sphagnum depending on the plant. I’m not really going to go out and buy peat moss for one plant, so do you have any advice for how to amend the coir in order to prevent sogginess? I haven’t repotted my burgundy yet and it’s still in the nursery pot. Thanks!
I got a Burgundy that hasn't grown in months and is losing lower leaves after they turn orange. I had it inside, my windows face west but there's a large building that blocks any bright light from reaching my rooms. I usually water only when soil is dry and is in well-draining soil mix. I recently put it outside on the balcony and I think the leaves are growing larger but it's drafty and so it's now loosing leaves at a quicker cadence without any new leaf growth. For context, I'm in San Diego, so the climate is usually pretty friendly for these ie not too cold. Any tips? Am I just not meant to have this plant if I can't get bright indirect light indoors?
hi! recently i bought a very small ficus tineke and i want a tree but I bought one with a lot of different small stems? will each of them grow into their own tree? or will it just be a bush
Thanks for the video! I have a baby Ficus Elastica Tineke in a 4inch pot. I thought it wasn’t going to survive because it’s lower leaves edges were browning, then falling off. I decided to wait for soil to dry out a lot before my next watering and it seems to like it. I have it about a foot away from an east facing window and it’s grown five more leaves. When is a good time to repot? Also the pinkish colour that some of the leaves have start to fade. Is that normal?
I picked up a Tineke as well as a Ruby. For my calatheas I use bottled spring water, along with a couple other plants.....would you say Elasticas are tap safe?
When I purchased mine about one month ago. I have it outside in bright shade. No direct sun. When I got it it green, white variegated but now its pink and green. Looks awsome but didnt know the white can go pink? Have you seen that before?
Hi, I have a rubber plant tineke with beautiful varigations like yours however it has brown spots on the edges just like the fourth leaf from the bottom Of yours. I was wondering if you knew the cause of this? I’m concerned it’s root rot. Any thoughts?
I forgot to ask someone to water my rubber plant while I was traveling for 2 months. It has lost all its leaves and the stem is dark brown. Is it possible to revive it? I thought it was completely dead and went to throw it out and noticed that the roots seem to look ok. What do you think?
Ok I'm curious about the red spike things on the tip of the plant. Mine dont seem to be growing much or putting out new leaves. I've had the plant a couple months and it may have put out one leaf and it's like a half leaf. The red spikes are also shriveled looking. Can I do anything to help out where the plant grows?
Can someone please tell me what are they putting in the soil to keep it from absorbing water? It seems to go well for a couple weeks then it stops absorbing water causing the dirt to harden and the water to run out the bottom.
Try mixing around or disturbing the surface of the soil. About once a week I stir the top of the soil on my pots and that allows the water to go through easily without pouring over the sides.
Add mulch either pebbles or natural broken down mulch, it’ll keep those microbes healthy then the microbes will keep your soil healthy. If you let it dry out and it has no mulch the soil literally dies and becomes water-proof.
Of you take the whole plant, pot and all and dunk it for a minute into a large bucket of water with wetting agent and fish emulsion it will Thankyou. Make sure when you dunk it no air bubbles are coming out and let it drain well but don't do it too often.
Hi.. I have the dark green variety that I purchased in Jan 2019. It hasn't grown since then but lost 2 of its lower leaves. It was placed in indirect light with watering once a week. Being concerned about this, we shifted it to direct light on the windowsill with watering to maintain a moist soil based on some recommendations we read online. But now the remaining leaves are turning leathery and curling inwards with small white spots appearing along the leaf edges. Can you pls suggest a remedy or explain what's happening to our plant??
I just got this plant the dark solid green leaf one cause its so beautiful. Its in my bedroom on the opposite side from the window which gets light all day. I noticed that there are dents in the leaves appearing.. I did mix the potting soil with peat moss cause i kept reading how good that is.. Should i re-pot it in just regualr soil, could the retention of water be causing some of the leaves to dent and slight curl inward?? :(
I bought a pink variegated version for $7 as well with 4 stems. Such a steal!

Could they thrive near or in a north-facing window? I just moved and I'm planning where to put my plants 😅
I got my varigatet one für 3.99. Still cant belive it

Yeah, that's very likely the problem. It can do OK with peat moss but you'll need to water a bit less to compensate
