- In this video, we will address how to fix the common issues that most people face when it comes to their variegated Ficus Elastica like browning of the leaves. I highlight how I care for mine in detail and then compare it to an example on how Ashly (subscriber/follower) cares for her Tineke Rubber Plant and how I would change a few things to minimize the common issues she is facing. We also cover and address droopy leaves, no growth or small leaves, small white dots on the leaves and losing the variegated colors.
Thanks @PeggysPlants for helping me with the intro

Amazing! So I bought my ficus in 2020, and it did well for a while but never grew. All of a sudden (6mos later) my leaves were drooping, the tiny sprout that never grew was curling up, and it had not grown a centimeter 🥲 I revisited this video took some action - 1 WEEK LATER all leaves are perky AND a new leaf is sprouting!!! Thank you!!!
Awesome, this gives me all the feels reading this. Glad to read your Ficus is doing a lot better and showing new growth. 😁
@@CrazyPlantGuy 🥰🥰🥰🥰🌱🌱🌱🌱
A friend gave me a ficus elástica cutting with a couple of leaves I cut her in 4 pieces put her in water to root, it took about 5 months to root. When it did I potted each piece in a pot, some I put on my porch, and one I put next to a south facing window inside. She was taking a long time to open the one closed leaf it had, so input her on porch also. Immediately she started opening the leaf now she has 5. I’m afraid to bring her in for winter. I’m going to buy plant lights for inside. Love her don’t wAnt her to die after all my hard work.
I got so fed up of my first ficas doing nothing but still looking healthy I got the cutters out for propagating from it and now I have 7 successful plantings out of 9 cuttings and cheated a little well a lot really by purchasing a grow light
That’s why it popped up in your feed because you were researching it the night before😏
So now you spill the beans and tell us all of your ficus secrets. Thanks. Now hopefully I can get mine looking better. It's always a pleasure working with my #1 Crazy Plant Guy.
My ficus looks like yours before my fathers pigeons poked holes on its leaves. Now,I call it ficus adansonii and it is now my own plant hybrid.😂
haha I love that
hahahahahahhahahahahahahahhaha
Bahaha!
Wahahaha that’s hilarious. It really does put a smile on my face 😄
Bahahaha.... 🤣😂🤣😂
You’re so right in stating that you have to adjust the plants’ requirements to your own environment . My apartment’s dry dark atmosphere has a deadly effect on most of the plants I have ever tried to maintain , but I found that succulents and cactus do great with a grow light. I have a thriving ficus on my patio because it’s loves the diffused sunshine , humidity , and fresh air.
everything does good with grow lights man. windows are overrated. don't even bother with them lmao. I got two crotons petra and mammy 4 ft tall and bushy off cheap grow lights. a parlor palm 5 ft tall and wide literally in the dark with some cheap grow lights. all my plants. snake plants, peace lilly, some anthuriums, fiddle leaf bambino, zz plants, monstera deliciosa, pothos and philodendron vines. 90% of my plants are on grow lights. Only ones that aren't are the ones in my east facing bay window like a 8 ft tall and 4 ft wide yucca plant lol. although even that gets grow lights for 30 days out of the year when my christmas tree takes its spot.
@@cooloutac I love your inventory of plants! I do agree with grow lights being more than enough or even great for supplemental. Question for you though if you don’t mind… How many hours do you leave the lights on? What is your best schedule? Some people like to leave their hours on overnight or during the day just wanted to see what works best for you and your opinion. 😊 thank you 🙏🏼
@@tiffanyrobbins7590 I leave them on 12 hours a day. any time of day of night it really doesn't matter. I coordinate with the sunlight since I open my windows too.
I actually told my mom that I really wanted this plant and I showed her yours and she decided to get me a very ugly but very cheap one🥴I ended up cutting the top that grew in my care(three leaves), propaganated it and waited almost a whole year for a new leaf that is opening right now so imma be taking notes from this one hopefully my tiny one will grow
If you can give it the right growing conditions your Tineke will grow and take off. Good luck. 😁
Very interested in an update on your cutting. I clipped part of one before my ex took it, with her consent, and have it in soil for about 2 months now. Going to repot into final container this spring.
@@notasleanstillasmean3593 It's doing great, since making this comment it got a bunch of new leaves and I didn't lose any old ones, in my experience it always rests during winter and does nothing until late spring
Best of luck to you and your cutting
Mine is still in the same pot, depending on how the roots are looking I might move it to a bigger one in the spring as well
@@jovanaslobodahow's it looking now??
That intro w/ Peggy’s Plants was hilarious 🙌🏾
Two of my favorite plant CZcamsrs, I really enjoyed this video!
Why am I cackling at this intro?! "I can hear you fine Peggy." 🤣🤣🤣
Christian!!! “My ficus is perfect and yours looks like crap.” 😭😭🤣 I’m choked on my cookie from laughter....then I really cried. 🥺😢 I bought four and three are DEAD! (Ruby & Tineke)
Keisha just give them plenty of light (they don't mind some direct sun) and follow Christian's instruction for watering. Here in Southern California, I put them outside in partial sun during the warmer months and they actually grow fast!
@@sunnyjozani8421 I have North facing windows and I live in the Northeast. The one I have sitting in the window is the one I have left. It’s slow growing but it’s holding on. 😁
Your thumb is as green as mine! Lol
I keep all my ficus varieties on my veranda because they just love the light so much
I feel this about Maidenhair ferns😂
The intro was EVERYTHING!!! I love Peggy's plants. She is so knowledgeable and chill!
Agree, she’s the best and so chill. Love her. ☺️

Good video Christian. Wasn't prepared for the swift decapitation though lol 😬😁
Haha, sometimes you just have to rip off the bandaid off, less painful 😥
I actually ordered two Tineke in 4" pots since I've always done well with my regular ficus elastic plants. They are being delivered tomorrow. So this is super timely! Thanks, Christian :-)
Wooot woot. Congrats, I love ficus plants
I'm here for the collab intro! I hope to see many more!
Beautiful plant! I got my ficus tineke about 5 months ago and I love it! Easy care in my opinion. I live in Houston so warm and humid most of the time. She sits inside by a south facing window and has been doing great with 2 new growths so far. I water maybe every 2-3 weeks and wipe down the leaves once a week or in passing.
Always love your intros, can't wait to see updates on your ficus ruby as it grows after its hair cut 😄
I so genuinely appreciate the lil skits you incorporate in your videos. Nice to see a some humor in the planty world🌱
I have a ficus tineke and it’s doing great, and it’s definitely one of my most neglected plants! I’ve found that if I let the soil dry through it’s the happiest. Gets a lot of light as well and I always water all my plants super thoroughly like you do, but I find the leaves point up almost allllll the time. It is smaller than yours, I’ve only had it for about 6 months so curious to see if that changes as it grows! Thanks for confirming how I’m taking care of this plant!
This video is excellent, filled with good information and excellent explanations on his thorough advise. One of Christian’s best videos and he has had a lot of excellent videos. Loved the guest shot from Peggy wit Peggy’s Plants in Florida. Too funny. Great job, Christian! 👌👏🥰
Thank you so much. Really wanted to make sure I cover a lot of the common issues and questions everyone had about their ficus elastica ☺️
Loooved the intro! I've always wanted a ficus tineke and your general care video was really what sold it for me. Mine ended up with black edges, dropping leaves, and no growth in months! So glad you made this video! I was suspecting it was me potentially overwatering even though I have only watered it once or twice since I gotten mine in 2 months. It's reassuring to know that humidity was not the issue! I will absolutely take all your new tips in this video and fingers crossed mine will start growing again!
Two days ago I asked in a plant group about my Ruby reverting to more like the Tineke and nobody had any idea so I am super glad it's not just me having this issue!
In Italy, I remember seeing A LOT of ficus elastica (various different types) outside and they all looked great, very tall. This helped me understand that they love/need a lot of light, and they're pretty resistant to underwatering.
Yes, I was so excited when I was walking through Napa, CA, and saw a HUGE Tineke growing outside. Sooooooo gorgeous!
I’ve seen lots of videos about the red/pink variegation of plants reverting back after it gets older and usually the ‘cure’ for this is to simply prune or cut it quite vigorously and that usually gets the variegation back. Not sure why this works but pruning is always good for plants anyway…😀👍
Best intro with Peggy. I love colabs with my favorite !!!
Thank you for taking your time and making such an in depth video with so many helpful tips 🙏🏼
I also let my Tineke completely dry out between waterings, provide plenty of bright indirect light and because I’m in Canada and we get no sun for six months I expect mine to go dormant for the winter even with grow lights. Thank you for this tip on soil mixture you use she needs to be repotted so I’ll definitely be doing that ! I’ve had mine for three and a half years now she’s pushing four feet tall 😁❤️
Love this video! I have a little baby Ruby and a slightly more mature Burgundy, both doing great so far! I’m hoping my Ruby doesn’t start to revert but honestly the tineke looks gorgeous, so if it reverts I won’t be too upset! Also I think you have the right idea about why some of the leaves stay looking droopy even though it’s fully watered! I have a massive peace lily I’ve had for over 2 years now and some of her leaves are longer than my forearm! Her leaves have such thick stems that a month or so ago she was very droopy, and spent a couple days being droopy, those leaves perked up a little to be bouncy but they stayed facing down more than before! I actually kind of like the look, because now she looks very full with some leaves falling lower than others rather than all standing tall. So I think you have the right idea, the steams are so thick that when they droop the stems basically conform to the position now and want to stay there. My peace lily wasn’t affected negatively, she’s bouncy as ever and pushing out so much new growth, but now some of her thicker stems have a slight curve to them, where the leaf meets the stem. They’re not soft either, they feel very firm and healthy, just now curved more than they were before.
My husband and I literally laughed out loud at your thumbnail. I love your sense of humor and your tastes in plants. Your ficus tineke inspired me to get mine. Keep the videos coming, please!
Hahha glad you two got a laugh and enjoyed it. 😁
💖 The intro! Your Ficus plant is Beautiful!😉👍🏽
Thanks Lisa. 😁
My tineke is inexplicably my easiest plant 🤣 She's little, but I have her in a northern window next to my cactus grow light and she gives me new leaves constantly. I hope she stays that way long enough to get big.
So you have yours and you’re a grow light and it’s doing good
@@dannettesavas3269 any plant can grow off a grow light. problem with rubber trees is they can get 10 feet tall so you will need to make sure you get light on all the leaves lol. I started my burgundy one with grow lights. it was under an west facing bed room window. eventurally it got like 4 or 5 ft tall to get light from the window. So I still have the grow lights just giving light to the bottom leaves and the top leaves get the light from the window. Its almost to the ceiling now. branched out on its own underneath the window filling in the space between the wall and bureau that its in.
I’d love to see a video on how you prep your plants for when you travel.
Omg I was doing everything right almost under watering really and I just looked at the root ball it was so tight C thank you thank you thank you so much! I had had browning and now the new growth is looking lovely and healthy. Thank you thank you 😊
I loved your collab with Peggy!! Your tineke is a brand of its own! 😍
Love the intro! Thanks for the tips. My plant started going down by loosing the leaves. Couldn’t stop it until it finally went home to be with the Lawds. I have no issue with the Ruby though 🤷🏻♀️
As is, it’s so beautiful. I was driving along the city park, and pointed out that the tree in front of us, looked stunning. Turns out it was a ficus.
Thanks you so much for making this video. I’ve searched the information about rubber tree on the internet, none of them is comprehensive as you do. You just answer all the questions I have, i feel like I’m more ready to take care of my Ruby ficus elástica now. Thank you!
So true. Individual plant genetics also makes a difference. Even cuttings from the same plant have grown and look different. Thank you for all the vids. I really enjoy watching your content.
Best collab ever
This was so helpful! Thank you!
I have a ruby. The red does seem to fade. There’s now just a tint on the lower more mature part of the plant. The new leaves are always more red. But not as red as when I first got it.
I have a tiny burgundy that I keep to the right of my south window. It's gets direct morning light and then bright indirect light in the afternoon. It loves it there. It's not a fast grower but it grew steadily throughout the winter. The comments about slight underwatering were so helpful. I let mine dry out too and it shows with a slight droop or curl on some leaves but the plant looks great! I'm excited to see how it does in the spring/summer.
Thank you for making such a fun and informative video! I have been waiting for an update on your tieneke! 😊
I really love this in-depth look at caring for each plant! Really excited to see more of these videos for your other plant babies 🥺❤️
Thank you. I will definitely be doing a lot more. I’ll post in my community page in the next plant asking some of the common questions and issues people are having, similar to what I did with this one. Just posted about my string of hearts. 😁
@@CrazyPlantGuy That is one I don't have yet, but I'll be watching because when I do get one (yes, when, I know myself), I would like to have the lowest chance possible at killing it LOL. Thank you for all the work you do for this community!
I bought this plant a few months ago and it got 1 new leaf and it looks like it will get a branch(?) by itself without me doing anything special. This video has helped me a lot. Thank youuuu
That’s awesome. If the plant is happy in the current environment it will just take off with very little effort. 😁
Love the intro and name of the video haha love the blunt honesty and the plug for someone else’s channel too!!
OMG! Love the entrance 🤣🤣 classic! We love you both!! ❤️❤️
people ask me how I grow mine so pretty-it’s bc I live in a subtropical climate, tbh 😂
))) I have to say, i live in Ukraine, and my variegated elastica shows pretty good growth even at winter times.
I've trained all my ficus elastica to tolerate my west facing window, when it gets to a heat wave or above 35C I draw the curtains until the sun has set. I also found this helped my ficus Ruby stay pink/sun kissed and it still pushes out lovely big leaves, so that may be a factor- from nurseries or growers they may be able to sell that Ruby fabric because they are under intense grow lights (that's my theory)
As for half the leaves pointing downwards I agree that after a certain time drooped they will not correct but they are perfectly healthy and that's more important. My burgundy was a half rescue job so I inherited the really thin stem and the half drooped leaves, so now I just water correctly and push it right up against my East facing window, fertilize and keep it away from wind because of the thin stems. Hopefully I can rehabilitate it a little more and get it growing a thick trunk and new leaves that fan out better.
Thanks for this video xx
I have fans running in my house as I sell plants to help the cost of the animals I rescue. Everytime you walk buy it or think of it or when you water it sway it back and forth or give it a soft shake
That is what builds strength in the trunk my fan takes care if that for me here. Lol
I’ve been waiting for you to post another ficus elastica video for so long 😍
This was so helpful ! Thank you! I just received a ficus triangularis variegata as a gift and have never had one before.
I live in Florida, and mine lives in front of my home, full Florida sun ..and is very big....4 years and she loves the sun. Thanks for the video.
I saw one in Animal Kingdom in full sun over by the rear exit of pandora on the way to lion king. And across from it was some of the biggest whale fin I have seen too. Mine is shivering in my bathroom infront of a small south facing window and it feels cruel to have it there after seeing the one in FL. Lol.
@@amy_soucy LOL
I've found, to bring more light in from a north facing window, place mirrors on the shelf the plants are on. A lot of mirrors, not just a few. Also, use terracotta pots. I was forever killing my philodendrons and my Tineke was losing leafs. With terracotta being porous though, it helps the roots to dry out faster if you are over-watering. Now I can successfully keep philodendrons alive, and my Ficus Elastica doesn't look half naked. If you're going to put terracotta pots, on mirror though, sit it in a plastic base, first.
God idea! And/ or use white panels of some sort to reflect the light back. ( Your principal is similar to what photographers do - position reflectors in such a way to bring on light onto the side that a subject's side is a little too dark.)
Great intro and kudos to Peggy!
Great tips Christian!
Thanks for the great tips! I’ve always wondered about those spots on the leaves so that was very informative too.
Glad you found the video helpful and informative. ☺️🪴
I literally don't do anything special with my ficus elastica tineke, just water them and prolly fertilize them and they look pretty. I even put them in direct sunlight lmao but I do live in a tropical country.
Haha tropical climate definitely helps.
Same.
Pink plants like ruby tend to bleached out or revert if they get too much light same with pink syngoniums, peperomias and begonias, hope It helps! We love youu
Thank you! I just noticed my Ruby reverting & was really confused since it's in a South window
@@Elizas09 they really love very very bright light but not too much or they become white haha
Ah makes sense... can you make a white variegated turn ruby?
@@jobertviva2503 well this is a no sir haha, because of its genes
Does this theory apply to tineke? Mine is getting a lot of direct sun light and now the leaves are getting greener, only white border left on new leaf 🤣
Loved the intro w/ Peggy! 🌿
Very helpful! My ruby is tiny and didn't know it might revert. I always love your intros. I had my sneakerhead whatch your recent video of your collection. He is now a huge fan of yours. I figured it couldn't hurt to get him a little more on board with my plant obsession.
Yes, let’s convert them all into plant people buwahaha bwhahaha (evil laugh) 🧛♂️ 😁

BUT pretty sure it was you who put the triangularis on my wishlist 👀, now waiting for it to come to austria.. ☘️

Props on the intro, well done! Oh, and thanks for the ficus tips too 🙂
Just purchased a "small" Ficus Elastica and didn't know where to begin. Your video was a plant saver! Thank you.
Perfect timing, my ficus burgundy was doing so well until a couple weeks ago. Thanks to your tips I am going to repot and see if the root ball is too compacted.
From my experience, red/pink plants tend to get that color from ample lighting. I think maybe your ficus reverted because it was getting lower light than when it was growing in the greenhouse. That's just my theory, though! Anyway, great video! Always love your content :D
Extremely informative!!! Christian is so so good!!! Thanks for the video dude!
This video is so helpful!! I just got a ficus elastica and she’s been getting brown spots and dropping bottom leaves. I’m now realizing that it’s most likely a soil issue!
I stayed at a middle of nowhere hotel in Arizona once and they had the most beautiful tineke in the lobby about 20 feet away from the door. Pretty much no light, just lobby lighting and that thing was also bone dry. I couldn’t understand how it looked so pretty. Maybe they had it near a window and moved it, but wow I was blown away at how gorgeous it was.
They probably just bought it for the season. Rubber plants are tropical trees. Most ficus can tolerate low light, but don't thrive without full sun.
@@mrscotchguy I just got back from the same road trip, bringing my stepson back home from college. Stayed in the same hotel, they moved it, but wasn’t in any better of a location than before.
I know this was video was posted "way back" in 2021, but I want to give props to Crazy Plant Guy for being so informative and helpful. Most videos I've seen on YT about care of ficus elastica (and most houseplants, to be quite frank) are too general and don't delve into troubleshooting or much of anything at all. So thanks for taking the time to provide quality information! And your F. Elasticae are gorgeous!

I have NEVER been able to keep these beauties alive for more than a couple of weeks, no matter size or placement in my apartment.
I'm so looking for how to learn how to care for them!
Lots of info in this video. Important to understand what they prefer and then make the adjustments in your home or your plant care style that will work for them. 😁
Always repot new plants!! And flush the soil of salts and such. If the site/store you bought it from has hard water, all those salts and minerals are in your plants soil. That can damage or kill your plants as well. Hope this helps!
please do this for every plant
Thank you so much for this video!!! I just got a rubber plant and now I know how to properly care for it! Thanks 😊

Terra cotta RULES!
Oh the intro😄 .... Once again you nailed it
Oh Peggy.....that intro was fantastic 💚🌿🌱🪴
My ficus is so sad lately...I thought I was underwatering it so I started watering it more and it's still so droopy
Try more sun, give it fresh soil in a bigger terra cotta pot and tray. And rub it’s leaves.
Love your intros! I do blame you but for being plant crazy too!
Haha oh no 😅

Good to hear they’re growing well and happy you found the video helpful ☺️
I live in FL and my burgundy is outside and growing wonderfully, it's huge!! My apt is small and the only place to I could put it was near the front door where my dog's tail and ppl kept hitting it so I moved it outside. It's in a very large terracotta pot. it gets direct light early part of the day and indirect during the later part of the day. Now I have to get help to repot it again and I'm going to propagate it. Hi Christian! I really needed to hear the different watering habits. Now I have an idea to what my bad habit is..Loving the creative intros!
Thanks Elizabeth, glad you found the information useful. Watering habits is a big factor and can make a difference in how our plants react or look, and make adjustments base in what they prefer.
Thanks for all of this loaded information! I have a pretty variegated baby that's about 3&1/2 feet tall now. She's honestly about 15 feet from a west window straight in front & a north to the side. She's popping big beautiful leaves. I keep her on the dry side but I'm going to start to water more heavily on watering days, after watching your video I think she needs the super sized water & not the medium 🙃 thanks again!
This was so cute! I love both of you!!!!! I want this plant nowwww!!!!! So pretty!!!
Great. I was hoping to learn a lil more about how to care for mine. I had been ckn in on ur channel I'm glad I didn't miss it today.
Yay. Hope you found this video helpful. 😁
Wow thank you for that video! Help me a lot with my Ficus 🤗
Wow thanks so much I
Just added these plants to my collection, this knowledge has come on time 👌🏽 👍🏾
I 100% agree with you. my varigated ficus was struggling and developing brown edges. I repotted it to a plastic pot with lot of drainage holes and a very porous soil mixute and moved it very close to south facing window and the problem was solved
that stick -check for dry soil is a great idea, I'll use that right away! Most of my plants have recently been repotted, but the two biggest pots are just too big to drain or bottom-water, so I'm always doubting whether those plants are needy or not. Thanks you for your tips and advice, great video and funny too :) keep it up! cheers from NL
