I review some qualities of the two flocks I use for my own terrain. I discuss some of the differences between Woodland Scenics and Scenic Express Green Turf Blends, and share why I blend them to get a different result. - Hry
like your mini review a lot, nice one again mike
Thanks. :)
Thank you, Mike! :-) I really appreciate the reference. I was wondering why my accounts were getting so much activity today; I figured it had to be something of yours generating it... And remember: it's not stalking until I catch you rummaging through my trash ;-)
**grin**
I greatly appreciate these little videos. And more so I appreciate getting to see what materials that you use for your terrain as well how you use them.
I will have to give Scenic Express a try. I have been using the Woodland Scenics, and I try adding in some variation with the coarser flock with little success. I have been looking back and forth between yourself and Greenleaf terrain and trying to get that almost soft rolling look that your tree bases have with no luck.
Kindest regards,
David
I find the coarser flocks hard to use myself. They can often have too much texture. In the past I have run it through a coffee grinder just a bit to knock it down in size. It can make a big difference.
I use the same Woodland Scenics flock you showed and agree about it looking too "flat" for grass. I really liked how the blend turned out so I might have to give it a try.
I often try out blends my mixing a tablespoon or so. Keeps you from committing and you can track ratios that way. :)
The old footage showed the material much more clearly and I can see what you mean about the yellow. Nice blend though. It looks much better your way.
Scenic Express has so many items on their site that it frightens my wallet. :)
I understand. When ever I need to order something from them, I always end up ordering something extra to try out. I'm running out of shelf space. ;)
I just wanted to share my method of "blending". I base flock with the Woodland Scenics green blend and then when my flock is still wet from spraying glue on it I sprinkle some Scenic Texture Grass turf blend on it here and there and also a variation of colors of fine turf from Woodland Scenics. I seem to get a quite realistic grass texture like that :)
That is a great tip. Sprinkling over wet areas like that really helps to produce gradual transitions between colors that really improves its realism. Sometimes I let the first layer dry, and then sprinkle and reseal.
great review, the scenic textures flock does seem to have a bit more variety in different structures :)
I agree. For a more overgrown area, the rougher texture might work very well.
Perhaps part of the reason for the bright yellow is dandelions...I know my yard has more than a couple of them in it.
Funny. :) I could see that being a reason for the yellows. Tiny flowers scattered amongst the grass.
We have about a 4 acre yard beyond the dandelions we have large patches of tiny bright purple flowers. In some circles I imagine that there are people who whisper about all of the 'weeds' in my yard, I think it adds a bit of character to it. :-)

Nice. I have left the back of my yard (1/2 acre) go to meadow and scattered it with wild flower seeds. I think my neighbors think I'm crazy. ;) It's way more attractive and easier to maintain. However, after 14 years it has become totally overgrown with invasives. I didn't realize how bad it was until I started trying to remove them. I've been working on it all summer and some areas look like a wasteland where it was only problem plants. But... next year I will reseed them and it should get back to a wild flower meadow. I need to be more vigilante in the future.

His clump flock tutorial is very nice. I should be doing it myself for some color variations, but I have so much on the shelf I wouldn't know where to put it. ;)
The video was helpful ! But can someone tell me what's the song from Kevin Macleod at 4:30ish ?
It's called 'All This'. :)

Mixing static grasses is a great idea. It can give a much more natural feel.
