My favorite part was Scott in that last solo part; such power in his voice. You will hear this numerous times, but please wear headphones because it will open up a whole new appreciation for just how talented they truly are at their craft.
Scott also took the bass part while Matt was singing lead.
And I love that Scott has the range to be a wonderful bass singer and still got up into baritone and even a low tenor area depending on what the song calls for. It feels sometimes like we talk about Mitch-slaps, and how amazing Avi and now Matt are, and Kirstie as the only girl in the group is holding her own, and Kevin does an amazing job with the beatboxing -- all very true. But then we forget to talk about Scott who leads this group SO WELL, and has this wonderful voice with such range. I could listen to him all day long.
There are so many Pentatonix videos to choose from, and you’ll be disappointed by none of them. They are Masters of their craft. But please please don’t let Run To You go by. Avi mentioned it at the end of Daft Punk. Many others have covered that song (an original by Pentatonix). It’s not only my favorite PTX song, it’s my favorite song of all time. No beatboxing. No lead singer. Just perfect five-part harmony from start to finish. The words will break your heart and uplift at the same time! (“I will break down the gates of Heaven. A thousand Angels stand waiting for me.”)

5:54 I'm so glad you stated this. It's for some reason still a debate in the PTX community that needs to change. It's been like years now (I exaggerate of course). And people still compare the two instead of giving Matt his own individual merits.

You don't exaggerate: it has been FOUR years! As much as I like Avi and follow his solo career, it drives me nuts when four years after he left, people still write comments like "I miss Avi". Matt Sallee has come in and has done an outstanding job for this group! And as I have written before and I admit it is likely just a coincidence, but anyone noticed how Kirstin has soared since Avi left? Anyway, long live Pentatonix, they never stop to amaze us!

YES!! This is exactly what I love in a reaction when it comes to this song specifically! I’m SO GLAD you picked up on Scott doing the bass because most times people react to this song so early on (because it’s amazing!) and they miss stuff like that! Scott is absolutely the 🌟 of this one for me! I just love that he’s so versatile and can go really high or low. He’s my personal favorite of the group! I recently heard someone in a reaction say “wherever Scott needs to be is where Scott is” and I think I’m going to start using it, describes him perfectly! LOVE your reactions and I can’t wait for more! I would suggest their cover of Shallow, you get a Scott and Kirstin duet and they sound amazing together. With everyone else being absolutely amazing in it as well AND you get to see Kevin’s amazing cello-boxing skills! Also their Evolutions really showcase everyone also, my favs are Evolution of Ariana Grande and Evolution of Rihanna! 💙 (sorry for such a long comment I just love Scott and PTX, and if you read this whole thing ily! 🤣)

Scott did the bass part in the beginning and when Matt took the lead only. Matt did the bass for the rest of the song. They both did an amazing job as always. I love PTX and I want to hear them on the radio!
Kirstin is the little power house of the group.
While Matt sang, Scott took over bass duty.
Kirstin really shows her strength in this one. And Matt really has a wonderful singing voice as well as doing the bass.

If you want to hear some amazing harmonizing between Matt and Mitch, try Mad World. Very beautiful. I also think you'd really enjoy their original song Run to You. It's haunting. Both suggestions I've made are 5-part harmonies and just so beautifully executed.

@Gabbsi, you will note that PTX doesn't repeat things stylistically if they can help it. Each song IS different. If you want to REALLY blow your mind over those differences, check out their Christmas music selections. Their versatility is beyond belief.
Next: Havanna or Amazing Grace (Or Shallow). Or if you want not Avi: Say Something. Love your reactions! Open mouth, disbelief in your look, hand gestures... all very authentic and fully relatable!
One of Avi's best moments with PTX happened in their original song, "Run to You". Incredible!
Another great video. I was in junior high school when this song came out by Simon and Garfunkel, I loved it then but.....oh my gosh I cried like a baby when I heard PTX’ version. I think I can safely say that “we all miss Avi, and of course wish him well. For me? It’s taken some time to warm up to Matt, but he’s got great talent as well. Please keep them coming!
Nobody puts more passion into a performance than PTX. Matt has an, almost, identical range as Avi . Note that the timbre of Matt's voiice is so much more soft and mellow. He brings a whole new dimension to the band - all good!

i also love Avi and miss him in Pentatonix, but the song that completely won me over to Matt as the new member? Their cover of 'You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch.' Matt takes the lead vocals in that one, and oh my god, he OWNS it! It showcases everything he brings to the group - and also gives us a chance to hear Scott doing a stellar job with the bass in his stead. I also love how much Matt enjoys himself in Pentatonix's more lighthearted numbers - he always looks like he's just living his best life, doing his thing. 😁
You want to hear a fun one you should listen to Voiceplay's Boy Bands in 5 minutes and their version of "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" and "Oogie Boogie Song"; you would be surprised by the harmonies and the incredible range of the bass singer who has the deepest voice of all so far an E1 and F1

I know it’s not pentatonix, but you should slash check out “no tears to cry” by Citizen Queen. It’s an all female acapella group founded by Scott. But a good pentatonix song is their cover of “shallow” Kirstin shines bright in that...again. 😋

Here's the funny thing about classifying voices...it not always about how high or low you can go, it's about what _register_ you sing a given set of notes in, where one's "breaks" are to shift registers. This affects the timbre, the _quality,_ the resonance and overtones, that one singer has even when singing in unison with another. Even though Matt & Scott's overall ranges pretty much overlap (more so than Scott & Avi), the _sound_ that Matt produces is (dare I say) darker, broader, more resonant; Scott's is cleaner and more airy. That is why I would classify Matt as a lyrical bass and Scott as a lyrical baritone..."lyrical" in this context meaning "having a range broader than the basic voice classification". Of course, some notes will always be in a particular register, at the extreme ends (chest & whistle). Avi was a specific type of lyrical bass, the _basso profundo,_ meaning that he could go considerably lower than the average "true" bass.

There are so many to choose from! (I love all your reactions...just saying.) There is Mad World, La La Latch, Havana, New Rules X Are You That Somebody: mash-up, to give you a little variation. They have a different genre individually but meld so well! Pure talent by all! Amazing to see 5 people, all talented together in a group. They can each stand alone and make it...but man I'm so glad they work together! Avi does have his own YT channel and you should check out Change On The Rise, he wrote the song. Thanks!

From 10 to 2? It's called dynamics, aka variations in volume, a lost art in the raucous rock&roll era. "ppp" _pianissi-issi-mo_ (barely whispering) "pp" _pianissimo_ (very soft) "p" _piano_ (soft) "mp" _mezzopiano_ (medium soft) "mf" _mezzoforte_ (medium loud) "f" _forte_ (loud) "ff" _fortissimo_ (very loud) "fff" _fortissi-issi-mo_ (full blast). PTX went from, I'd say, pp to fff. Composers may choose to use pppp and ffff, but they are nonstandard notation, and _generally_ only applied to instruments that can be used with more finesse or greater power than a human voice. I have seen pppp in vocal scores at least once, though.

When I introduce people to PTX, I always list Sound of Silence, Hallelujah, Imagine, Amazing Grace before Bohemian Rhapsody. That way they are used to the beatboxing before seeing Mitch show off!! :)

Not enough reactors give Scott his due on that last verse. It’s one of my favorite parts (of many, including Matt and Kirstin’s verses) and makes me ugly face every time.

Liking Matt now, huh? Matt has been with the group for three years now and has been a fantastic addition to the group (plus, Avi helped select him too). Matt brought a new and different dynamic to the group as soon as he arrived, and they haven't lost a step with him onboard. He came from a musical theater background just like Kirstie, Scott & Mitch, so in some ways his personality fits in even better than Avi's did. I know you have just started your Pentatonix journey, but the more you get a chance to listen to their entire catalog, you'll realize that the group has just continued to get better and better. Their latest album The Lucky Ones (made up entirely of original songs) is a masterpiece, and the new single they put out last week, 90s Dance Medley, is amazing too.
May I suggest "New Rules" cover - really showcases Matt's bass lines.
Kirstin is amazing, but the queen in this group is Mitch.
Also, please, watch Bohemian Rhapsody, they are beyond amazing in this one!
Imagine is a great one not only for the video and the message in it, but you can hear Kevin singing, and he sings like an angel.
He also graduated in cello at Yale, pre med, speaks Mandarin, and has great solo work, I think all of them have.

For a Matt lead, try You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch. He's killing it, and Scott sings the bass line. Christmas-y, but you can listen to PTX's Christmas music year round.
Scott is known for his riffs and runs. Try Cracked (an original). There's no official video so try this live performance: czcams.com/video/brnC5BOgcHs/video.html. For his upper register (he can go quite high), try Problem (Ariana Grande cover).
In case you didn't know yet: Mitch and Scott have a side project called Superfruit. It started as a humorous vlogging channel, interspaced with musical episodes, and culminated in an album full of original songs. It's not a capella but nonetheless great to listen to. For starters, you could check out their Empire Medley, their Evolution of Lady Gaga and Evolution of Miley Cyrus, and Beyonce (a medley of all songs on Beyonce's self-titled album) and Defying Gravity (though this one is more of a showcase of Mitch's vocal abilities but you get to hear Scott's upper range). They also have a fun spoof with Kirsty in the Frozen Medley. Just keep in mind for all Superfruit videos to always watch until the end; they have bloopers.
