- Hello Singderellos,
In this video, I react for the first time to Disturbed performing ‘The Sound Of Silence’. In this video, I analyse the magnificent performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and i'll tell you what I think made it so great.

They Autotuned this .... because He had a Heavy Cold ..
The original sound was Better ..
HEY Ho
You are gorgeous girl. Wander what 🫚 hair would look like 😊
not a cold. he actually had a lesion that was bleeding on his vocal cords.@@christendomdefenderbeready3251
I must be the only one that thinks this sounds like garbage. His enunciation makes my ears bleed. To me, it sounds like he's trying to sing with a mouth full of marbles.
Draiman was trained as a Cantor and has been a heavy metal singer for years. During this performance, he had the flu and was sitting on the stool because the production team thought he might fall over if he tried to stand during the performance. He said that he spent about three hours in the vocal booth working out how to sing this song. Paul Simon promoted this performance on his social media, which he has never done for any cover of one of his songs.
Thanks for knowing and sharing. Seems to take a lot of work to be a master performer.
you know nothing
in one of the recent interviews he revealed that at that time he had a problem with his vocal cords, and had a surgery on them later. so he was not really in a good vocal state. yet nailed it. here's the link: czcams.com/video/osBbQLhOp8A/video.htmlsi=Q5ir3NndGI8CAK4x .
Draining was actually singing with a bleeding lesion on his vocal cord that night in addition to the fever. He did not have the flu, his fever was caused by the injury to his vocal cord. He refused to cancel his performance that evening because he had given his word that he would be there that night.
@@jaycooper2812 When I saw them in 2019, he sat during this song...After hearing him talk about this, I rewatched it, and could see him struggling. SO glad the damage was able to be repaired.
Respect to Draiman for going out there sick and sitting right in front of the timpani. That's hard enough if you're going to just scream the whole song, but for something that requires such dynamic range it flabbers all kinds of gast. What a monster performance.
The timpani in this performance drive me absolutely crazy. I am a percussionist, and believe me, those drums are certainly not what you are hearing in this track. Props to the performer for trying to sell it, though.
Why does everyone have to mention he was sick in every reaction.. it sounds like an excuse.. the performance was outstanding as is.. just leave well enough alone
@@timliscum2861 the reason in my opinion is because it makes the performance that much more amazing
Another great singer of recent years is Myles Kennedy who also sang this song together live with Draiman and they synergies together awesomely.
And also, he can put up quite a performance even when sick.
Love them both! I have been listening to their bands for years and they never seem to release a bad album.
"flabbers all kinds of gast." My new favorite expression....totally plagiarizing this!
i watch an embarrassingly high number of vocal reaction channels, and ran across yours just recently. i think yours has instantly become my favorite. Your descriptions of the techniques are done in a way i understand them better than ever before, and your demonstrations of said techniques are, truth be told, really kind of astounding. We love to see it!
You’re not alone ....🙈
😂
Agreed I love reactions to this song as this one is really creative
That's actually why I started watching "vocal coach reacts to (x)" videos and then I never really saw good technique discussion, but found them entertaining so I kept watching them...
Then the algorithm introduced me to this treasure, simultaneously educational and entertaining.
Me too!
Agreed
"Do you know what...that was f%&king amazing!" The passion in your voice made the review a special one.
I agree! As an older female, I’ll just say her analysis was delightful! ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊
I find the fact that he's able to combine vibrato and distortion at the same time is mind blowing
You are the only reviewer that has picked up on the tongue technique that David employs to produce those overtones. Every other reviewer, that I’ve watched, thought the engineer had kicked the Autotune in. You certainly know your stuff. Great review
on here they actually did kick in autotune, after David expressly didn't want it, hence the glare to the stage crew. They did it because he was sick and didn't think he could pull it off on his own. For that reason, it's why I prefer the original video to this version.
true, he was f ing pissed they autotuned him @@mmoore2006
David has actually said that this was one of his worst performances because of how ill he was.
Just shows how incredible he is ❤
"If this guy isn't going to scream or growl at me"
Oh fairy child. Oh sweet fairy. Prepare to get down with the sickness.
This comment is gold. You're all just cowards.
OH WHA AHH AHH AHH!!!
Yes, David Draiman is a very good singer. You, on the other hand, are INSANELY good. It is quite mindblowing how you can analyze, illustrate and emulate any vocal technique out there - and be hugely funny, quirky and entertaining at the same time. Thank you!
Have a look at FVM other channel Lolli Wren to hear her version of lilac wine
I get chills every time I hear this song. Best cover in history.
Valid argument, but may I recommend a song called hurt, covered by the man in black.
I literally go through that journey EVERY time I hear Disturbed's version. As you said "he knows what I want better than I do" - so very true. I appreciate your explanations and genuineness.
One of my favorite analysis of Disturbed sound of silence. Clear explanation of the techniques he used.
I didn't even notice that he was selectively leaving notes un-distorted when he got to that part of the song. Your analysis of performances like this is ridiculously impressive! Thanks for all the hard work you put into these videos!
Agreed! I replayed it multiple times to hear the un-distortion (if that's a word...🤔) and really appreciate his use of vocal cords. Fantastic.
This version sucks,
Simon &Garfunkel does such a beautiful rension,it'll make you cry.
I love when you said something to the effect of "If this man doesnt scream at me or growl at me...." Brilliant.
His vocal performance on this is staggering. The orchestra builds with him but he controls the mood of the song perfectly. When he really lets loose it injects emotion too even with the distrortion. Just screams passion. Still brings a tear because of the song but the performance adds so much too. One of the few times when a cover performance surpasses the original
Simon and Garfunkel were born to write this song and to carry it to be finally completed with David and his haunting powerful vocals delivering the song to us just the way it should’ve always been heard. The universe can be pretty serendipitous now then 😊
@OliveWhisperingEye although this is 1 year later 😂 I have to say you worded this so wonderfully I couldn't help but reply ❤
@@celianorris7042 Ty🙂
I've watched "most" reaction video's to this live version of Disturbed Sound of Silence, and this is possibly the best! Love hearing the technique behind the amazing voices.
I love how you can mimic almost any technique! That high growl scream thing scared the crap out of me lol
I was looking at comments and kind of listening to her towards the end of the video and when she did this I thought, "WTF was that!"
"I'm not 'Disturbed' yet." I see what you did there! 🤣😂 I Love your reactions. You explain vocal techniques so well to those of us that know nothing about singing. 😁
Not listened to Disturbed in a decade or more. Nice to know he can sing really nicely. Great vocal dissection too. No other vocal coaches come close.
Darkness. Last song, second album. 2002.
Absolutely love his version of this song. I think his interpretation gives the words the gravitas they deserve. David Draiman is a trained cantor, which I think shows, but you still have to have the voice. If you'd like to experience his full power, you might enjoy "Down With The Sickness" They also do another beautiful song called "Hold On To Memories". The live version always leaves me in tears.
Happy New Year to you.
Hold on to Memories always has me bawling. That and The Light.
I agree on the "Down with the sickness" but make sure you listen to the whole uncut version.
The S&G version is beautiful, but they take it in a more "pleading" direction. Draiman brings a note of anger in his performance. It's a perfect way to take the exact same song, but emphasize something slightly different to make it your own. It speaks to the power of the song that there are multiple, valid ways to perform it.
Hold onto memories definitely
What a great song, I love it! I put it into my "Shellshocked Radio - Recommendations" List: czcams.com/video/P-KdPsT-9UU/video.html Very well done!
As impressive as this performance is, once you know he was sick and running a fever at the time makes all the more amazing.
I've watched hundreds of reactions..you floored me by pointing out he was holding back early to build later.
Only the top vocal coaches mention that; your reaction was spot on with the "odd" and "true"!
Every time I watch one of your reaction videos I get amazed on the way you explain in details a very simplistic way for dummies like me to understand the art of singing! Thank you my kindred spirit over in Australia
I hope you also watch the official music video of this song, even if you don't react to it, so you can see the difference. The visuals are haunting. Sound of Silence was the first time I heard of Disturbed so I was shocked when I listened to another song of theirs, Down With the Sickness, and realized they are a metal band. Totally different sound. Take a listen if you haven't already. I always appreciate what I learn when I watch your reactions. Thanks!
David Draiman has unbelievable vocal control....amazing!! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before........just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent. Loved your reaction and your take on the performance.
I am SO trying not to be creepy, but I'm spending an inordinate amount of my free time watching your reaction videos. You are simply amazing. Thanks for all that you do. ❤
Not sure if youre a Disturbed fan or a hard rock fan for that matter, but if you EVER EVER EVER get a chance to see them in concert, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you see them !!! I've seen them 7 times and David's voice (and the rest of the band) gets better every time. Rock on.
OMG! That demonstration of the “tongue manipulation” was fantastic. The overtones popped - it was almost Throat-Singing-esque.
The great thing about watching vocal coach reactions to masterpieces such as this one is that each of you picks out a different aspect of the song/technique to focus on. I've learned so much just watching Disturbed and Jinjer reaction videos! Great reaction! But you haven't truly experienced Disturbed until you get to "Down with the Sickness!"
Davey Draiman's talents are completely underused in Disturbed. I'd love to see him do more stuff like this.
What I truly love about your videos in contrast to other vocal coaches is that I always end up learning something every time, where most reviewers don’t bother with the detailed analysis and explanations you include in your videos. BTW, when you said you were going to listen to it another 50 times, you paused for just long enough for me to join in, and somehow I literally said 50 times in unison with you. Your talent and knowledge are extremely impressive and I am enjoying learning from you. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos!
If you have not seen the official video it is a must. I love the energy you put into your reactions
I didn't start liking this cover until I heard this live performance. It's so damn impressive that his live performance is actually a bit better than the studio version.
Singing with rage and maintaining crystal clear control was fascinating and haunting and brought me right in front of God. What power!😊
A True Masterclass of vocal range and seamless switches between teqnuics
Your analysis is so unique and spot on, you explain phonemes and technique so well that i actually know exactly what you are saying without having any real education on vocals
David Draiman has one of the coolest voices in rock from the early 2000s. I got to see Disturbed in small auditorium and it was amazingly intimate and kicked ass! They took several 70/80s tunes and rocked them out. They did this one that was originally Simon and Garfunkel. They did Shout by Tears of Fears. And they did Land of Confusion by Genesis. And they did them justice.
🤘🕊❤️🤘 You’re wonderful. So is the song ✨
Your EYES will haunt my dreams for all eternity your a precious stone to say the least loved your video.
I’ve seen a lot of reaction videos to this song. Yours is one of my favorite. You’re so excited, and you explain singing so well.
Fun fact. His aunt made him take voice lessons as a child. That's how he did "scream" music (I LOVE old school disturbed btw). When I first head this song (original by Simon n Garfunkel) I teared up. This is the calmest he EVER sang n it brought chills and tears. I felt this song touched me in a way music is meant to but doesn't really do anymore today. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING cover and def on my everyday playlist!
Every time I listen to this song I get CHILLS!!!!
Times like this I want to gently caress the like button continuously. Thank you you so much for being on the Earth at this time Mother.
You provide bar none the best reaction videos I've ever watched. They are in depth yet accessible, authentic, informative, and enlightening. Thank You.
I was so happy to stumble across this tonight. This is my favorite cover of all time and I still get goosebumps after the thousandth time listening to it. Best of all was hearing it on your channel, as you are by far the most interesting, knowledgeable, and talented expert out there. Thank you!!
I’ve listened to many reviews of this song by many different CZcams reactors - this one is the best. And you have a great voice yourself
Oh ... my ... god, you're bonkers when you explain how the different sounds are made. I love it. And the red hair ...
You have to check out the live version they did in Houston with Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge) as a guest vocalist. The two of them combined is astounding
My favorite vocal coach reaction channel. You combine great explanations with stunning demonstration. There are definitely some vocal coaches who never sing in their videos, or when they sing it's not that impressive. Your voice blows me away. I've watched a bunch of your other videos and didn't know you could do distortion like that until today.
Slight confession I’m becoming addicted to reaction videos and yours are the best, love for you to check out James - Moving on, living room sessions, such a tough song for him to get through, much slower than the original and sadly not long after he lost a family member, gets me every time I hear it!
I’ve just found your channel. I’m a 55 yr old Nana in the US and for me music is life (and no, I can’t sing a lick). I love your weirdness! I encourage my grandkids (7 and 10) to be weird. If someone calls you weird, say Thank you. If we lived in the same side of the pond I’d want us to be best friends because people also call me weird and I’m fine with it. If you want to marinade in this song, go watch the official video. Holy crap I could watch it over and over. So powerful! I look forward to seeing more of your reactions, and let that WEIRD flag fly!!!
"I'm going to watch this at least fifty more times!" Hahahahaha! I've listened and watched so many times I've almost made a career out of it. Mr. David Draiman is flawless here - at least for me, though I'm no expert by any means. I really enjoyed your honest reaction and the pointers you gave. This is the best cover ever, for me!
Not even flawless I’m this performance as he was incredibly sick before this performance
@@jasondamrau9147 Yep! I too have heard he was extremely sick during this performance. Saying that, it's amazing to me that he was flawless. No flaws whatsoever.
I'm obsessed too. The video for this song is also a must see.
I've watched a lot of reactions to this rather fabulous performance, and yours is my favourite.. you're really good at what you do. You get it and feel it and that's lovely to see, and your analysis and explanation is so astute and erudite.. You're clearly very skilled and knowledgeable in your craft. I will watch more. Thank you.
Oh I agree absolutely 🙂
What’s amazing about this particular performance is that he had a really bad chest infection/flu thing at the time. He was sitting on a stool because he needed every bit of support. As someone who is very familiar with his voice and this cover, I can hear the parts where he’s just struggling slightly, where the deliberate distortion slips slightly on the higher notes as he’s not quite got his usual amazing power. Having said that, this is an insanely amazing performance for the rest of us mere mortals who aren’t the incredible David.
The thing to take away from this is that he was very sick and STILL managed to sound this good.
I'm not sure if your playful analogy of these reaction videos is what keeps me coming back or the songs themselves. LOL, Your awesome!
My God you truly are the best Vocal Reaction Lady Person on the Internet. Seriously you are fantastic. 👍👍
David is one of the best metal singers at the moment, he can manipulate his voice as he needs to, glad you loved it
Thanks for making me smile. Can always count on you. Know what you're talking about and funny as hell.
I love how often you see vocal coaches having full on stim reactions to these impressive performances
One of the things i like about this live stage version was the artistry. The song is basically in 5 parts, 1st is just david and the piano, 2nd verse they add in the acoustic guitar, 3rd verse they add in the entire string section, 4rt those big drums, 5th david really adds in the power and distorion for the crescendo. Each time the lighting brings those instrucments in when, also each time David raises the power of his voice. Just amazing.
One of my all time favorite covers of any song, period. It had been a while since I listened to it but got goosebumps as always. Just incredible.
He makes his audience fall in love with him :)
FINALLY HAVE FOUND THE BEST VOICE REACTOR ON CZcams much love from SOUTH AFRICA baie dankie
Happy new year Lolli🌹. This is a favourite song of mine and reacted to by my favourite reactor lady person
Happy new year gorgeous 💜 it is my great honour to be your favourite reactor lady person. I wish you the best of everything xo
I rarely laugh at CZcams videos, but you are so goofy 🤣🥳 Also, you are really knowledgeable and I love your imitations. You seem to be able to copy any sound right away. That is impressive! 😊
Hard to believe he was sick and still did such an amazing job.
Your excitement at the size of his neck, totally made my night! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have absolutely subscribed. LOL. I adore you already.
The live performance will leave you in wow 😮. The video will leave you in tears 😭. Both are truly amazing!
I have been reacting to your reactions for quite some time and, I must confess, they keep getting better each time. Aside from your spot on assessments of vocal techniques, laryngeal gymnastics and breath controls, your passionate enthusiasm of your craft is contagious. At times I have more fun watching the awe and excitement you project as you truly enjoy yourself than I do listening to the song itself. I find that unique and refreshing and I look forward to your next video. Please keep doing what you do best and have yourself a fantastic new year, Cheers.
Well said, I feel the same way.
I really enjoy videos of professionals experience and explanations, as an ignorant music listener it helps me realize why im enjoying it aswell as adding onto the experience
First time I've noticed the definition of overtones expressed so clearly. Lovely. Great example on your part as well. Too many forget the use of overtones.
I've been a huge Disturbed fan for a long while now, but when I heard David sing this song... omgoodness! I get chills every time. Not only is his voice so powerful in this, but he is gorgeous to feast me eyes upon. Just an fyi - David is trained as a hazzan (cantor). So yes, he has a lot of control over his vocals.
Totally agree with everything u said❤
I've been a huge fan of Disturbed and their front man David Draiman for quite a while. I truly believe this is one of the greatest covers of a song ever. Even Paul Siman, the writer of the original song, has publicly said the song now belongs to Disturbed. If you're interested in hearing the band in all its glory, "Down with the Sickness" is an amazing journey of not only how David has mastered the vocal fry, but how quickly he can change between his singing voices. The band also does a song called "Hold on to Memories". It displays David's very pure voice. Thanks for the amazing video.
Paul Simon even said that Disturbed own the song now, because of David's performence - which is is the greatest honour one could get
he had the flu and a bleeding leison on a vocal cord doing this simon phoned him after this show and said this was the best cover he had ever heard which makes this even more awesome
HELLO GORGEOUS!! 💜 I do so hope you enjoyed my analysis of Disturbed!

Love your vocal analysis, reactions and passion for amazing voices! Time for me to find my way to your Patreon I think :)
Love your videos! If you're down to listen to something special and different, you should check out Tyler Childers (I suggest the song Lady May, he has a really good live version here czcams.com/video/tiwJadn-Nso/video.html).
Love your reactions. Very insightful and very entertaining!
You should also react to the music video of this song. The production is phenomenal and the video they created adds a beautiful component to the rendition
Hellooooooo!!! :)
Spiritbox just released 3 new ones, please, please react to Hysteria!!
😍💐😘
Happy New Year to my fav youtube reactor lady person! This arrangement and version of Sound of Silence always gives me a shiver by the end. I think it brings home the lyrics even better than the original arrangement by S&G (which is lovely but less dynamic). Excellent neck girth discussion, too! Glad you didn't have to walk around with a pine cone on your head.
The way he creates suspense by slowly "building" as you said... its like the musical version of a Quentin Tarantino movie
Now you know why this has been watched hundreds of millions of times maybe a billion by now
Excelent reaction video : funny, geeky and emotionnal. I love it. I was told he was very very sick for this performance, which give him even more credit. I just checked and their official music video has 773 millions vues! Now you're kinda bound to react to "down with the sickness", which is more of their usual music style... if you don't know it already. Otherwise, let me tell that nightwish and floor jansen have a little surprise for you in "yours is an empty hope".
All other youtubers who do musical reaction/analysis videos should aspire to be as good as you, as you are truly knowledgeable about what goes on in these videos and are insanely entertaining to watch as well. You also have a gorgeous voice as well to back up what you say! Please keep making more content!
As a car guy I am impressed with the clutch comparison.
He was sick during the performance too. The official video is amazing
I'm actually dying right now "That is a lot of tissue just waiting to be flapped"
You have so many quotable lines that just kill me!
I stumbled onto your channel recently and immediately knew that we should be friends!
Also I absolutely love hearing your analysis of all music. More Dimash (Ogni Pietra or Tired Love of Swans) and Pentatonix would always be
appreciated!
This is, by far, the most beautiful rendition!!!!
The visuals in the music video takes his performance even further. A must see.
Truth. I hadn't heard of Disturbed. They were the concert headliners for Harley Davidson 123rd anniversary in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Harleys are made here). The crowd was rough, but David had them, and I mesmerized. He expressed his anger and dispare with just his voice. Live. I cried. Go see them.
I've watched way too many of these, and this is by far my favorite reaction to this song. Your explanations make sense - and I know absolutely nothing about singing. Your enthusiasm is so entertaining. I'm so glad I ran across this!
This versions is absolutely amazing - watched it so many times. And your input is so good - keep up the good work 😀
I'm not sure I've ever seen someone have a simultaneous eargasm and nerdgasm at the same time. Until today.
I'm a big fan of this music and my favourite bands are Disturbed, SOAD and many others. I came across your channel by chance and since then I've been watching your videos with total enthusiasm. Your explanations are just great and so easy to understand. This has given me a much better connection to these bands and I now listen to the songs on a completely different level. Thank you so much
So happy you reacted to this. Disturbed has been my favorite for many years. David was trained as a cantor in his youth, and it really gives him a very unique sound. The fact that he did this performance while sitting, and while sick, is just amazing.
My favorite song by Disturbed is 'Prayer' of their second album 'Believe'. Definitely worth a listen to get an idea of what his rasp and growl can really do when cut loose!
Paul Simon wrote some great stories - it takes a good deal of talent to deliver it as it should be done - here is a really good example. Also, I must add, it takes as much to be able to dissect the performance and explain so clearly explain the techniques used, and the reason for the effects. Informative and entertaining - you have nailed this reaction!
The Man has a great deal of training in that voice.
I go on a binge and watch reaction videos to this song. I love watching people react to this performance for the first time. I get emotional everytime I watch this performance.
Informative and entertaining as always, thank you! I'd love to hear your reaction to Aurora's live recording of It Happened Quiet. Her connection to her music and her emotion is right up your alley, and there is also incredible backing vocals. Also a couple of fun vocal technique Easter eggs in that performance - watch for her hand placements helping her mouth shape, straight out of vocal coach drills. :)
There are a few different live performances of that song, but I think you probably mean the one she did live at The Current?
@@revangerang Yes, that's the one. One of my favorite live performances by any artist. czcams.com/video/9U-N6LqzdIM/video.html
@@gfloyd2002 Hell yeah. It’s sooo good 😌👌👌👌
You’re such a fun and knowledgeable reactor. For another interesting up and coming vocalist in the clean/distortion game I would have to recommend Spiritbox // Circle With Me (Live vocal one take). Courtney is an animal.
6:07 oh my god that B5 is so clear i love it
