Draiman was trained as a Cantor and has been a heavy metal singer for years. During this performance, he had the flu and was sitting on the stool because the production team thought he might fall over if he tried to stand during the performance. He said that he spent about three hours in the vocal booth working out how to sing this song. Paul Simon promoted this performance on his social media, which he has never done for any cover of one of his songs.

Draining was actually singing with a bleeding lesion on his vocal cord that night in addition to the fever. He did not have the flu, his fever was caused by the injury to his vocal cord. He refused to cancel his performance that evening because he had given his word that he would be there that night.

Respect to Draiman for going out there sick and sitting right in front of the timpani. That's hard enough if you're going to just scream the whole song, but for something that requires such dynamic range it flabbers all kinds of gast. What a monster performance.

The S&G version is beautiful, but they take it in a more "pleading" direction. Draiman brings a note of anger in his performance. What’s amazing about this particular performance is that he had a really bad chest infection/flu thing at the time. He was sitting on a stool because he needed every bit of support. As someone who is very familiar with his voice and this cover, I can hear the parts where he’s just struggling slightly, where the deliberate distortion slips slightly on the higher notes as he’s not quite got his usual amazing power. Having said that, this is an insanely amazing performance for the rest of us mere mortals who aren’t the incredible David.
The thing to take away from this is that he was very sick and STILL managed to sound this good.

One of the things i like about this live stage version was the artistry. The song is basically in 5 parts, 1st is just david and the piano, 2nd verse they add in the acoustic guitar, 3rd verse they add in the entire string section, 4rt those big drums, 5th david really adds in the power and distorion for the crescendo. Each time the lighting brings those instrucments in when, also each time David raises the power of his voice. Just amazing.

I have been reacting to your reactions for quite some time and, I must confess, they keep getting better each time. Aside from your spot on assessments of vocal techniques, laryngeal gymnastics and breath controls, your passionate enthusiasm of your craft is contagious. At times I have more fun watching the awe and excitement you project as you truly enjoy yourself than I do listening to the song itself. I find that unique and refreshing and I look forward to your next video. Please keep doing what you do best and have yourself a fantastic new year, Cheers.

I've been a huge Disturbed fan for a long while now, but when I heard David sing this song... omgoodness! I get chills every time. Not only is his voice so powerful in this, but he is gorgeous to feast me eyes upon. Just an fyi - David is trained as a hazzan (cantor). So yes, he has a lot of control over his vocals.

I've been a huge fan of Disturbed and their front man David Draiman for quite a while. I truly believe this is one of the greatest covers of a song ever. Even Paul Siman, the writer of the original song, has publicly said the song now belongs to Disturbed. If you're interested in hearing the band in all its glory, "Down with the Sickness" is an amazing journey of not only how David has mastered the vocal fry, but how quickly he can change between his singing voices. The band also does a song called "Hold on to Memories". It displays David's very pure voice. Thanks for the amazing video.

Happy New Year to my fav youtube reactor lady person! This arrangement and version of Sound of Silence always gives me a shiver by the end. I think it brings home the lyrics even better than the original arrangement by S&G (which is lovely but less dynamic). Excellent neck girth discussion, too! I just checked and their official music video has 773 millions vues! Now you're kinda bound to react to "down with the sickness", which is more of their usual music style... if you don't know it already. Truth. I hadn't heard of Disturbed. They were the concert headliners for Harley Davidson 123rd anniversary in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Harleys are made here). The crowd was rough, but David had them, and I mesmerized. He expressed his anger and dispare with just his voice. Live. I cried. Go see them.

So happy you reacted to this. Disturbed has been my favorite for many years. David was trained as a cantor in his youth, and it really gives him a very unique sound. The fact that he did this performance while sitting, and while sick, is just amazing.
My favorite song by Disturbed is 'Prayer' of their second album 'Believe'. Definitely worth a listen to get an idea of what his rasp and growl can really do when cut loose!

Paul Simon wrote some great stories - it takes a good deal of talent to deliver it as it should be done - here is a really good example. Also, I must add, it takes as much to be able to dissect the performance and explain so clearly explain the techniques used, and the reason for the effects. Informative and entertaining - you have nailed this reaction!
