  • Yes, we've listened to Draiman singing "The Sound of Silence" in his music video last year. But I wanted to hear a version live that's closely similar to the Simon and Garfunkel version. Enter Myles Kennedy. I was so impressed listening to "Watch Over You" that I wanted to bring this version of both Disturbed and Myles together.
    Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Disturbed featuring Myles Kennedy performing "The Sound of Silence” live.

Myles himself says he is pushing 4 octaves but seen a few breakdown analysis videos showing he has sang across 5+. Cant wait to go see him again in a few weeks now that concerts are coming back. #RockOnMyFriendsV

    The first time I had heard the Disturbed version of this song, it came on the radio while I was driving and I had to pull into a parking lot somewhere to just sit and cry. At the time, I was losing both my mom & my wife to cancer. Disturbed’s performance with the building crescendo, combined with the sadness, anger and despair of David’s vocals carried, in a few brief moments, all of the emotions that I was feeling. With the addition of Miles’ voice in this version adding a new layer, and yet resonating with David’s vocals, it creates an extra layer of sadness, or like you said, almost an auditory teardrop, to the song at one point. But oddly, it almost made me feel a hint of hope with that addition as well.
    As you’ve said before, a song and especially a voice, can tell a story and make you feel what the vocalist is feeling. A performance can touch a heart and can maybe change the world, even if it’s the world of just one person when they hear it in the right place and at the right time. I’m still going to “ugly cry” every time I hear this song, but now with this version, there is a little bit of hope mixed in with those tears as well.
    So an enormous “Thank You” to Disturbed & Miles Kennedy for doing this video, and to you for taking us along on the journey with you as you watched it!

  • @johnballance1971

    Wow. So, for me, the S&G version feels like a hopeful warning... the Disturbed version feels like anger, bordering on rage that the warning is being ignored... but THIS, with Miles? His voice, brings a desperate frustration. So amazing. Thank you.

    • @clairethompson5549
      @clairethompson5549 Před rokem +5

      I totally agree with your tonal descriptions! This one somehow feels like a combination of both hope and anger - like they’re passing along a warning they ignored, and are desperately trying to convey it to others before it’s too late. It’s so moving. Simultaneously hopeful and tinged with deep regret.

    I was at this concert in Houston. I am a huge Alter Bridge fan and they opened for Breaking Ben and Disturbed for this one. The fact that Myles hit those notes a hour after his 8 song set is absurd to me. I had heard the disturbed cover a few times before this and was blown out of the water during this performance. I had no idea how electric, memorable and moving that performance would be. Its the best performance I have ever seen live and sent chills throughout my body almost the entire song. You don't have to point out you are a manly man just because you shed a few tears. Read through history and you will find great conquerors mention shedding tears during certain moments. Only a psychopath lacks enough empathy and emotion to remain dry eyed in all circumstances.
      A strong willed man is one who feels those emotions but carries on doing whatever he must do. That is not to say we should devolve into floods every time something upsets us of course. Most things should be be experienced with stoic calm, but we are not inhuman pieces of marble and we shouldn't think the occasional wet check means we are not men.

      I don't know many men who cry, at least not in front of others lol. If one of my friends did that in front of me then it would likely be something truly awful had happened and I wouldn't mock them for it. The last time it happened was when a friends wife had a late term miscarriage, which I think is a more than reasonable time for a man to shed some tears.
      There is also a difference between tearing up when witnessing something incredible and full on crying like a child over it. For example I find myself tear up whenever I watch testimonies of men who fought in WW2 and recount the loss of their friends. It doesn't cause me to weep because I control myself, but the heroism and honour of such men is very moving.

    I can’t recommend enough, Alter Bridge: Words Darker Than Their Wings, LIVE! There’s a note at the end that only Myles can hit. They never played the song live before, because it’s so hard to pull off, but anybody who watches it and hears that note has a strong reaction. Trust me, you can thank me later haha.

    • @elevown
      @elevown Před 2 lety +5

      Why wouldnt other singers be able to hit that note? (I've heard it) its not THAT high that there are not a few male singers out there who can sing higher and longer notes- (Ive heard them) so they could sing it too.
      p.s not that he isnt a great singer - and its a great song/performance- but claiming nobody else can sing it is over the top- its not like its a G8 or something lol.

    • @dknollRX7
      @dknollRX7 Před 2 lety +13

      @@elevown it’s a saying; you don’t have to take it so literally. There may be a small select few with the ability to hit that note, but that doesn’t mean they can pull it off in the same manner. A guitarist can look up the tablature of a song and learn to hit the right notes at the right time, but it won’t have the same sound, emotion or impact as when (let’s say) Steve Vai plays the same notes in the song.
      Myles was also sick during that performance, which makes it that much more impressive.

    Anybody notice after a few missed timings that Dave began subtly using his arm gestures to help direct? The first one was on "narrow streets of cobblestone" where he goes from open hand to closed fist where he wanted the plosive from the word "stone" to be. 5:25 another at 7:33 on "split the night." Very subtle, very smooth way of bringing them into sync. By 8:20 both are dead on.

That's what I feel would happen to me. What I love about this they knew how David was going to perform the song and Myles just had to weave above, below and within what David already does. He clearly tried to make them match Simon and Garfunkle at times and then at other times they 'make it their own' but they do so while still in reverence of the original.

    The cover by Disturbed brought the same emotion to this song, that I have said it needed when I first heard the original. I felt Simon and Garfunkel seemed to rush through it and lacked the intensity and emotional connection the lyrics demanded. Also, watching the tympani player and hearing him was great. Without him, the song would have been missing the foundation it deserves and I would argue requires. Great video. I stumbled on your channel recently and enjoy it. I was once studying opera performance as a bass. Under the teaching of great vocal coach who won many Chicago Met and New York Met competitions going on to sing with the US Army Chorus in the 70s. I married his Alto/Soprano 2 singing daughter 25 years ago! I still enjoy singing with him and my wife. I love how you bring your trained ear and voice to the world of metal. As always, I love Elizabeth's analysis of performances and I learn so much in the process. She hears things that I would never notice. In this video, however, I thought the Myles Kennedy harmonies where significantly different from the Art Garfunkel harmonies. To my ears, Myles was exploring different harmonic intervals from the beginning, as opposed to the constant intervals used by Art. It would be interesting to play the Myles harmony and the Art harmony together on a keyboard. I would be surprised if they were all that similar. If you deviate from the melody of a song very much, you are no longer singing the same song, but there is more freedom with the harmonic notes, and I think Myles took that freedom and ran with it, which is perfect for the Disturbed rendition of the song.
