Not sure if anyone mentioned this, Disturbed does not use autotune, ever! Draiman was really upset when he found out his performance on Conan had been autotuned! I guess the producers of the show use it for all live performances. The band had no clue ahead of time. Still love the original video more!

Yeah, I'd heard he was quite angry about it being there, at all. And yet? I only heard it a couple of times, and only used barely. I'm not sure if his performance would have been as solid without it honestly. But as Peter pointed out, it's just stunning to hear the amount of control over his sound in this for him having a triple digit fever.

This was a fantastic performance by this metal artist. I think he trained as a Cantor. It is so complex. It sounds so different from the fast, folk style song sung by Simon and Garfunkel in 1964, and different from the Pentatonix version. You, as a professionally trained opera singer, hear very differently than I do, and have the language to describe it. Very educational. Thanks. This viewing on Conan has 139 million views. I think I have watched it 10 times.

If you ever get the chance to go to see them live, please do, it will be something you've never experienced before.
My one gripe for this performance is that they autotuned him a few times. It's barely noticeable, but I can hear it on a couple of transitions. Even sick as he was, he didn't need the help. Thanks Peter! I’d love to see you react to Australia’s legendary Voice, John Farnham (Elisabeth has also looked at a couple of his songs and swooned 😜). Always do his live versions, never his recorded performances, and if you want a hot tip, start with his performances with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - notably his cover of the Beatles “Help” and “You’re the Voice”. If you enjoy his stuff, he’s known as the man who can sing anything, and even dabbles with opera ‘just for fun’ sometimes and freakin’ nails it! And no matter how much he moves, he hits nearly every note with perfection. See what you make of him 🙂

Excellent analysis of an unusual version of a well known song. I followed what you were saying and couldn't agree more with your comments. Well done, sir and keep up the good work.

Love it! I think you would also enjoy the band Iron Maiden. Bruce Dickinson is one of the best metal vocalist ever. Hallowed Be Thy Name would be a great song to check out.

An especially good suggestion considering how Bruce sings while running and jumping all over the place. "Vocal stability" with a twist.

Listened to an interview he gave, he was really sick. Yet most of the people in the audience probably didn't have a clue. He is an incredible artist and performer.

My best explanation is that Disturbed's version speaks to the modern culture, whereas Simon & Garfunkel spoke to their generation.

I think you nailed it on why many like this version more than the original. For me it is absolutely the structure/arrangement and the way it builds and climaxes. The use of orchestral instruments also makes it feel more emotional IMO. But they definitely utilized stellar writing give it a poignancy that the original lacks.

I've had this argument with friends several times and another factor is the emotional tone of the song. My sorrow is rage, so of course I'm more tied in to this version. Others are more melancholy and Simon and Garfunkel resonates more. For consolation, Pentatonix, and so on.

Really interesting, thanks! (I was going to make the Down With The Sickness joke too, so you needn't be too embarrassed 😛) One thing this makes me think is, I would love to see you and Elizabeth do an analysis together. You have very compatible styles (e.g. lots of pausing and rewinding) while still focusing on different details so I think it would work well.

QUESTION....Peter, do you have the gift of Perfect Pitch. I am always amazed how you can hear a note and tell what it is and the key it is in.

I’m so glad you knew he was sick during this performance. There were many who judged him on this performance alone, and they were not kind.
As always, I always appreciate your insights. I always learn something new from you. Thank you!
