Growing Up With A Killer Dad | Dad's In Death Row | Real Stories True Crime Documentary

- John Battaglia was due to be picked up by the police in the morning, for violating his parole again. He was granted one last visit with his daughters, Faith, aged 9, and Liberty, 6 years old. When the girls’ mother talked with them on the phone, they were frightened. All she heard was them pleading ‘no, daddy, don’t!’ - followed by the sound of a gunshot. She screamed down the phone ‘Run girls, run!’
This documentary explores two horrific stories. With haunting interviews with the killers, plus emotional exchanges with the daughters, this brand new film presents two extraordinary crimes and their criminals in a open, revealing and honest light. Beautifully shot and with extraordinary access and co-operation from the murderers, Texan prison and staff, and even some protesters fighting for the life of one of the convicts, this film is a captivating look at true crime, and the families left behind.

I can't believe John Battaglia is a real human being. It's scary to know we have people like that out in the world.
That's what I thought, he's so detached from what he did it's frightening. But I also think he's extremely manipulative, doesn't acknowledge the fact that he killed them to spite thier mother.
I bet he wouldn't be like that around real men, because he'll get put in his place, they must've had him jailed with weirdos like himself. It's sad it took so long to put him down.
Yeah, he was nuts, but not in a he-shouldn’t-be-executed kind of way. And it’s clear he didn’t have any real remorse for killing his daughters. It was clearly done just to her his wife.
He's a psychopath, not fully human; he has no real feelings.
A cartoon character...too stupid to pull it off, though.

Judge's finding that Battaglia was competent even in light of 3 out of 4 examiners finding him incompetent was a stellar move. Dude was a downright diabolical sociopath. Those examiners were bamboozled by this guy. He's obviously vengeful and deceitful.
Im baffled too - there was ample footage of him indicating he knew what was going to happen to him and why. Fortunately the judge saw through his bullshit. Frankly if my dad killed my brother and sister I would want to stick a knife in his heart so I dont understand the daughter.

I almost appreciate the way he spoke about it. Like it’s disgusting, but the fact that he just owned up to it fact for fact, while most abusers try to make excuses and lie and hide it, my thoughts are well if you’re an abuser and you own it 100% I’ll take that over someone trying to pretend they aren’t. I worked on Texas Death Row for several years and I worked on Westbrook's pod regularly. That man was not developmentaley disabled. True colors shine when they are behind prison walls, when they think no one is watching. And, that's all I can really say about that.
Can you give some examples, instead of an opinion? Because there would be much more to say about that, that would be informative.
@@tonirose6776 sure, I'll give facts. I am also a trained medical professional, so hopefully my overall assessment is sufficient. Based on the time I associated with him, he was always alert and oriented to person, place and thing. He was able to perform day to day activities, without assistance or instructions. He was able to sufficiently communicate with staff, and inmates. Although, it would not have been my job, or would I have had the ability to administer a written exam, he functioned at least at a regular or average level, in comparison to hundreds of other inmates that live in the same conditions and environment. I have witnessed a small percentage of inmates that I feel were developmentally disabled. These disabilities are supposed to affect a person and be visible, no later than 22 years of age. For this reason, if a person was charged and arrested before the age of 22, and claims a developmental disability years past that age, and after receiving a death sentence, it should be extremely suspicious. Especially if a positive finding commutes the death sentence to a life sentence. If that happens, they go to a specialized unit in Rusk Texas. The Hodge unit was created for the developmentally disabled inmates in the Texas prison system. I also worked at this unit for years. I witnessed three death row inmates that I was familiar with, transfer from Polunsky death row, to Hodge. Two of the three did not belong at this unit. And one admitted to me, in confidence, that he had a really good lawyer, that was able to make the transfer happen. You must remember that these people commit unspeakable acts during the commission of a capital murder. And that these people took someone's or many someone's existence. Most of them would kill again, under certain conditions. But most of all, justice is important. If not to anyone living, then to the victim or victims that don't have a voice. The argument that seems to be present today more than ever, is that if your not certified expert, with a master's degree, with 20 years of experience, then you should have no voice on a topic in question. People should really try to listen to the average Joe in the trenches. Regular contact with these people day to day, is so much more accurate and truthful than a interview and written exam conducted by an "expert". The inmates start to see the officers as a piece of furniture. They speak freely, and act "normally". What ever an individuals normal is. That's why I wrote "true colors shine when they are behind prison walls, when they think no one is watching." Anyway, I hope I was able to pass on some interesting information. I have considered writing a digital book about my experiences. The entire system is so secretive and should be brought to the publics eye.

@@pup9892 do you believe in the death penalty, Do you think any of the men in death row are innocent
@@traceygriffiths8594 Good questions. I do believe that the death penalty is necessary. However, only for the true monsters. The monsters that killed for pleasure, and or for greed, and take a human life with no remorse. The monsters that kill their children, so the wife can't have them. The people that can not be rehabilitated. They will always be a danger society, or correctional staff. Now, that I have said all that, at least half of the people on death row are not monsters. I do believe that many of them could be a productive member of the prison society, serving a life sentence. And yes, I believe that innocent people are on death row. I only say that because the justice system is not perfect. And mistakes are made. But I have never reviewed an inmates information and felt that they were wrongfully convicted. That's just my opinion. I do wish the death penalty was not needed. Unfortunately, at times, it may be the only course of action for true justice, and to protect the public.

When a person with history of domestic violence and who breaks his parole asks you “let me spend one more day with my daughters” . Doesn’t that make you suspicious and fearful of what he may do for that day????
I don't think the court and prison staff would find that statement alone suspicious but the girl's reaction, having to be physically forced to in order to be in compliance with the court order sure should have. Unfortunately the Parents that lie in family court in order to withhold visitation have ruined the trust of the courts that it's not just another Parental Alienation case. He mocked his victims pleading for their lives and seemed to relish in their suffering. people with low IQs have notoriously bad impulse control. it is likely that he knew what he was doing was wrong, but lacked impulse control. also, my grandfather was murdered and if his murderer had been sentenced to death, i would be fighting it. we don’t all crave revenge. it doesn’t do anything to restore my loved one’s life.
I was bullied in school and I feel bad killing bugs. It’s normal to be angry at the people who bullied you, but not to the level of choosing violence.

That was a smile of embarrassment. She doesn't condone her dads actions and nobody k ows how they'd feel in that situation. M sure he really was a sweet dad. That's her version of who he was without condoning his one act of horrific violence
John Battaglia definitely scored the full 40 on the psychopath scale. Part of their charm is how they repulse and attract victims in the same moment with the same smile. It was creepy how he did that.

For a moment there, Battaglia shows remorse because of the suffering his actions brought to his daughter. However, it doesn't seem to be enough to regret what he actually did. My experience in the field based on observations of his oldest daughter is that if she hasn’t been involved in drug related activities I would be very surprised. There is no justification for what he did to her mother, step mother, or her 6 and 9 year old sisters. He may have never touched her physically but the mental and emotional scars will forever be with her. The way he talks about their death sickening. I hope I never come into contact with someone like John Battiglia.
Well, then it will be a surprise for you that she's not an addict or has a history of abusing drugs. And by the way, her having problems with controlling her movements is due to a medical condition.
The eldest daughter has Friedrichs Ataxia, which causes slurred speech

I feel for Christie because you can tell she’s trying everything to cope with this situation but she needs to come to terms that her dad did kill her sisters, he didn’t have any remorse, it was a giant joke to him, and he’s a narcissistic terrible person who deserved it.
I feel for Christine also - I suspect he didn’t invite her over that night and kill all the sisters at the same time is that he wanted someone to grieve for him.
So glad Christine described her dad as a narcissist, to me this indicates she is seeing the real person through adult eyes, not just through her child’s eyes where she was not aware of what was really going on
For Christine, I suspect her dad “died” the day he tried to murder her mom, the time he beat her stepmom in front of her, and the day he murdered her step sisters - after that the monster was revealed and her dad was a person in her memory

It killed me to see her so upset. Not only did she lose her sisters, but she also lost her dad. I can't imagine how she felt knowing her dad murdered her sisters. It's obvious she still loves her dad and she loved her sisters too. Such a hard situation to be in.
If my Dad had beaten my Mum and killed my younger siblings, I'd have flipped the switch personally.
The nonchalant way he's talking about what he did and the total lack of remorse is sickening.
That is what you say now.
The ultimate disloyalty is to provide comfort to the killer of your loved one(s). Forgiving them is a spiritual matter. Visiting them, calling them, providing care packages, prison visits, commissary funds, excuses for their behavior, etc., is a different story and frankly, disgusting. My sympathy will always, without shame, lie with the victims and NOT their killers or their killers' families. The children of these murdering scum bags can go get some therapy; none of their fathers' victims have that luxury.
“I wouldn’t really call it attack” then described breaking her nose and knocking her out…that’s the definition of attack
It wasn’t an attack- according to him, it was a ‘correction’. Wtf????? I’d hate to see what a real attack would be to him… oh, that’s right, I guess a real attack would be to kill his own children! Or, in his mind was that just another ‘correction’ towards the ex wife? Probably. What a monster!

Hard to imagine 2 people who deserved the DP more than these monsters. Cracks me up that so many who spoke just blindly took the killer's word for what happened as the truth. Especially with "Elvis". He made sure he didn't leave anyone behind to provide any other version of what happened. These were both small, impotent men who needed a weapon to feel power and control. Justice was ultimately served in both cases, but it took way too long for both of them.
As a Canadian I’m not a proponent of the death penalty. Having said that, when I see a person like this I can understand why it’s used. As I get older I’ve come to believe there are people who are born without souls, that’s the only way I can understand their behaviour.
Canadian here, too. I am adamantly opposed to the death penalty and so glad and relieved we don't have it in our country. It was interesting to hear in the doc how one person said how bloodthirsty (my characterization) the population and the justice system was in Texas. Texans do not have a good reputation of being civilized due to attitudes like many of those expressed in these comments today; because of the prevalence - not to mention legality -of guns; and because of the death penalty so often being carried out, when more rational and compassionate other states, and many other countries ,have outlawed this state crime.
@@tonirose6776 as a fellow Canadian I am appalled by the idiocy of the Anti-capital punishment activists. You obviously have no knowledge of the number of innocent victims that have died at the hands of "rehabilitated" killers. Killers that are constantly being paroled by bleeding hearts that don't give a damn about the dead victims. A former coworker of mine in B.C. was convicted of first degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 25 years. He was released after serving eight years and six months. Free to kill again. You say that the death penalty is not a deterrent. Well, I can guarantee that it will deter the executed killer from ever killing again! You and your kind bear the responsibility and guilt for the deaths of everyone killed by a paroled murderer. But, you don't care because you are to self righteous to acknowledge the harm that you condone by denying that some people need to be executed to protect the innocent people that will die in the future. You call execution a "crime". It is a crime only if the law forbids it. Since the law in many states upholds it, it is NOT a crime. But, then you don't seem to be concerned about mere trifles like what crime truly is. I used to be surprised that people like you could be so uncaring for the victims of the killers past and the potential victims of the future. You are more concerned with protecting the killer. You are mentally ill. Please seek psychiatric help.
As a fellow Canadian, I TOTALLY support the death penalty for these losers. I wish Canada would bring it back.
Why is it relevant that you're a Canadian? Nobody cares where you are from.

Christie needs help herself... Her father almost killed her own mother.. tried to kill her stepmother and did kill her sisters yet she's like " that's my dad"
Yes. She needs help . Her dad is the biggest narcissist ever.
She’s traumatised from the events so of course she needs help. There’s definitely an attitude that you have to stick by your family no matter what, I think she struggles to look at her dad and see the man who murdered her sisters rather than the dad he was to her growing up.
Being raised by a malignant narcissist I know first hand what it’s like to feel empathy for someone who absolutely does not deserve it. It took decades of abuse for me to try and see the evil my mother embodies, and sometimes I still struggle with it.
Not quite: she's not championing him or calling him innocent. She's in pain because of conflicting emotions of love they experienced together when she was a child. It's difficult to let go of those powerful feelings. (Not saying he's lovable.)
That IS her dad
It's incredibly insane how Battaglia's mother said that his manhood was insulted and that he wasn't sane when he "walked to his truck and grabbed the gun..." wtf?? She mentions flashbacks of being bullied.

I think she has a bit of mental disability herself. I mean, she laughed when she said “he killed five people!” But she’s not as angry as Battaglia’s daughter. I think she may have experienced childhood jealousy over Faith and Liberty, having been an only child for quite a while. She cannot possibly mean those two little beauties are “better off” dead, instead of “suffering what I’ve had to go through.”
And I hope she’s receiving counseling - she’s got a teeny bit of her father in her, just a smidge, but it needs to go.

It amazes me John’s lack of any remorse or decency. I agree with the death penalty. Not to punish the inmates, but to try and offer some peace in the hearts and souls of those they hurt.

I don’t care what he said, John Battaglia was scared to die. The way he approaches the answers to those questions, like some edgelord angsty teenage boy, the bravado he emits, and the shock factor he’s trying to elicit, all belies someone who is insecure and scared and wants you to be angry that he’s not angry. But he is angry, and he’s scared, and the more he doubles down the more obvious it is. The more he tries to make you feel something, the more you can believe that he’s feeling those things himself and projecting them. I’m glad the guy’s dead.
Me too. What a POS he was
One person that evaluated his last interview stated it is in his belief that he was intelligent enough to continue with the ruse for years he wasn't aware he killed his daughters. Exactly! Trying to play it off with grandiose narcissistic comments, he was projecting.
Congratulations Edwn you are part of the elect, those who can see the truth. In this particular case

He wasn’t capable of being rehabilitated and he deserved the punishment he got.
I think it’s interesting that in the opening lines of this documentary, the daughter says “nobody says what about the kids?“, But her own father didn’t ask himself the same question when he committed his crime. He victimized his own children.

Texas has the best death penalty policies in the USA.
This lady that wants to stop the death penalty, should pay his way in prison until he drops dead. No tax payer should have to pay to keep these killers alive!
I think keeping them alive in a cell for the rest of their lives is more of a punishment than the death penalty. Death is too quick.
The death penalty costs more than life in prison. The taxpayer's are paying for both sides of all the appeals. Also, the initial trial costs about 50% more because of all the experts that are needed.
However, the bigger reason to abolish the death penalty is that minorities, the poor, and those with mental issues are way more likely to be executed.
Also, it isn't always as cut and dry as these 2 cases. Lots of innocent people have been executed and will be executed if we don't stop this barbaric practice. There is a reason most of the rest of the world has stopped executing people.
@@jimmyh6579 It shouldn't matter, but even though minorities make up a small percentage of those that commit crimes that are eligible for the death penalty they make up the majority of those on death row.
