Growing Up With A Killer Dad | Dad's In Death Row | Real Stories True Crime Documentary

  • John Battaglia was due to be picked up by the police in the morning, for violating his parole again. He was granted one last visit with his daughters, Faith, aged 9, and Liberty, 6 years old. When the girls’ mother talked with them on the phone, they were frightened. All she heard was them pleading ‘no, daddy, don’t!’ - followed by the sound of a gunshot. She screamed down the phone ‘Run girls, run!’
    This documentary explores two horrific stories. With haunting interviews with the killers, plus emotional exchanges with the daughters, this brand new film presents two extraordinary crimes and their criminals in a open, revealing and honest light. Beautifully shot and with extraordinary access and co-operation from the murderers, Texan prison and staff, and even some protesters fighting for the life of one of the convicts, this film is a captivating look at true crime, and the families left behind.

    • @pup9892
      @pup9892 Před rokem +50

      @@tonirose6776 sure, I'll give facts. I am also a trained medical professional, so hopefully my overall assessment is sufficient. Based on the time I associated with him, he was always alert and oriented to person, place and thing. He was able to perform day to day activities, without assistance or instructions. He was able to sufficiently communicate with staff, and inmates. Although, it would not have been my job, or would I have had the ability to administer a written exam, he functioned at least at a regular or average level, in comparison to hundreds of other inmates that live in the same conditions and environment. I have witnessed a small percentage of inmates that I feel were developmentally disabled. These disabilities are supposed to affect a person and be visible, no later than 22 years of age. For this reason, if a person was charged and arrested before the age of 22, and claims a developmental disability years past that age, and after receiving a death sentence, it should be extremely suspicious. Especially if a positive finding commutes the death sentence to a life sentence. If that happens, they go to a specialized unit in Rusk Texas. The Hodge unit was created for the developmentally disabled inmates in the Texas prison system. I also worked at this unit for years. I witnessed three death row inmates that I was familiar with, transfer from Polunsky death row, to Hodge. Two of the three did not belong at this unit. And one admitted to me, in confidence, that he had a really good lawyer, that was able to make the transfer happen. You must remember that these people commit unspeakable acts during the commission of a capital murder. And that these people took someone's or many someone's existence. Most of them would kill again, under certain conditions. But most of all, justice is important. If not to anyone living, then to the victim or victims that don't have a voice. The argument that seems to be present today more than ever, is that if your not certified expert, with a master's degree, with 20 years of experience, then you should have no voice on a topic in question. People should really try to listen to the average Joe in the trenches. Regular contact with these people day to day, is so much more accurate and truthful than a interview and written exam conducted by an "expert". The inmates start to see the officers as a piece of furniture. They speak freely, and act "normally". What ever an individuals normal is. That's why I wrote "true colors shine when they are behind prison walls, when they think no one is watching." Anyway, I hope I was able to pass on some interesting information. I have considered writing a digital book about my experiences. The entire system is so secretive and should be brought to the publics eye.

      @@traceygriffiths8594 Good questions. I do believe that the death penalty is necessary. However, only for the true monsters. The monsters that killed for pleasure, and or for greed, and take a human life with no remorse. The monsters that kill their children, so the wife can't have them. The people that can not be rehabilitated. They will always be a danger society, or correctional staff. Now, that I have said all that, at least half of the people on death row are not monsters. I do believe that many of them could be a productive member of the prison society, serving a life sentence. And yes, I believe that innocent people are on death row. I only say that because the justice system is not perfect. And mistakes are made. But I have never reviewed an inmates information and felt that they were wrongfully convicted. That's just my opinion. I do wish the death penalty was not needed. Unfortunately, at times, it may be the only course of action for true justice, and to protect the public.

      I don't think the court and prison staff would find that statement alone suspicious but the girl's reaction, having to be physically forced to in order to be in compliance with the court order sure should have. Unfortunately the Parents that lie in family court in order to withhold visitation have ruined the trust of the courts that it's not just another Parental Alienation case. Eileen Campos is a good example but it sure seems the wrong Parents get all the rights while good Parents lose theirs :-(

It was interesting to hear in the doc how one person said how bloodthirsty (my characterization) the population and the justice system was in Texas. Texans do not have a good reputation of being civilized due to attitudes like many of those expressed in these comments today; because of the prevalence - not to mention legality -of guns; and because of the death penalty so often being carried out, when more rational and compassionate other states, and many other countries ,have outlawed this state crime.

He was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 25 years. He was released after serving eight years and six months. Free to kill again. You say that the death penalty is not a deterrent. Well, I can guarantee that it will deter the executed killer from ever killing again! You and your kind bear the responsibility and guilt for the deaths of everyone killed by a paroled murderer. But, you don't care because you are to self righteous to acknowledge the harm that you condone by denying that some people need to be executed to protect the innocent people that will die in the future. You call execution a "crime". It is a crime only if the law forbids it. Since the law in many states upholds it, it is NOT a crime. But, then you don't seem to be concerned about mere trifles like what crime truly is. The death penalty costs more than life in prison. The taxpayer's are paying for both sides of all the appeals. Also, the initial trial costs about 50% more because of all the experts that are needed.
      However, the bigger reason to abolish the death penalty is that minorities, the poor, and those with mental issues are way more likely to be executed.
      Also, it isn't always as cut and dry as these 2 cases. Lots of innocent people have been executed and will be executed if we don't stop this barbaric practice. There is a reason most of the rest of the world has stopped executing people.

    The depiction of the old lady validating and approving his actions despite the protagonist's history of abuse is not only unrealistic but also concerning. While it's crucial to acknowledge the trauma of abuse, it's equally important to recognize that resorting to violence against others is never an acceptable solution. It's essential to depict more nuanced responses to such complex situations in order to foster a more realistic and responsible narrative.
