I did 2 1/2 years in a woman’s prison in Massachusetts. I got out in 2012 and haven’t been in any trouble/arrested since the day I walked out of there. My charges weren’t drug related but I committed them because I was addicted to drugs. I’m 31 now, have two beautiful children, a loving husband, a townhouse that we own and a truly amazing life. The cell mate I had the longest was doing life. She had murdered a man who had abused her child. So many people are amazed that I still send her money and letters and cards. But she is truly one of the nicest and one of the most kind hearted people I’ve ever met. She’s getting older these days and I’m really trying to visit her, but I now live in Maryland and just don’t have enough money to travel up there but I’m determined to find a way. I don’t think she’ll ever know what a great impact she has made on me and how I live my life now.

I really understand and relate to this comment!!! I did 2 years in Indiana, spent some of that time at the prison from this documentary. My charge was of a financial nature, no substance abuse, so I felt sort of like a tropical bird thrown off course during hurricane season because I had never been in trouble before and came from a "normal" life and now was suddenly in this strange underworld of prison. I met the occasional unsavory character, but also the best friends I have ever had! One of them just got released after 11 years! And one passed away from breast cancer and I have a memorial tattoo for her. Life is truly crazy.

Cindy White deserves to be paroled. She was 16 and has served 38 years. She is no threat to society. Kiana looked like she was proud of shooting a man in the face, yet she will get set free. It doesn't make sense.
A fire bug has a compulsion to light fires....Would you want Cindy to live next door to you?? ...I would Pass if I were you......Not Sure?...Try lighting a match and hold it under YOUR finger for say 8 seconds ,...Then tell us if you want her next door??

I love the interviewer. He listens, asks in a respectful manner, doesn’t interrupt, his voice is very calm and his gestures are very gentle!

Her partner was sentenced to 50 years. But she was sentenced to 30 but only had to serve15 in prison... She has absolutely no idea what she did wrong, other than getting caught.
She should never lay eyes on her kids. I'm glad her victim lived. Hate the smirk and light hearted way she talks about a attempted murder as if it was a day at church.May she rot.

They are all so nice behind bars. Post pregnancy issues I had for a while. Very hard. No support. But yet my son is doing well he is now 24. I raised him through it all. If people can't there are agency's that could help. Unlike 24 years ago. 16 years? I think I would let the firebug out first.
i disagree, reality is perception, if they are percived as kind then they are in that moemnt, crimes are done in the moment to, for reasons, does not reflect on decades of life, people aren't doing the crime on repeat 24/7 after all.
This man is a fantastic interviewer. He's able to ask very hard and serious questions while still being totally respectful.

I really find it humbling that even though these women did horrific things, Trevor still speaks with them with such a level tone. I really enjoy his documentaries.
I guess at the end of the day, they are humans
One thing you have to remember is that an interviewer can't be overly critical or harsh to the people interviewed. Otherwise they would most likely refuse to talk to Trevor or give him the bare minimum as far as personal details go. If they don't talk, there's no show. So Trevor has to speak with them with tact and neutrality. That doesn't mean he has to like or be friends with them.
I am so touched by how sweetly decorated the baby’s wing is. Obviously the babies didn’t choose to be born in these circumstances, I love the alphabet painted onto the wall and that their needs are well met. It’s not ideal for the baby but I hope that the mothers find purpose caring for their children. I’m sure that helps them stay straight in prison & after they get out of there.
your post is absolutely void of any understanding of right and wrong fran. the mothers made vicious decisions that ignored all levels of respect for others and the sacredness of parenthood. now caught, they just want to be treated like ordinary mothers who "didn't do nothin" to deserve this. do their victims or an intelligent society believe they are remorseful and unlikely to destroy the lives of others if released? sweet decorations and wall paintings show these women are meeting their infants' needs - wake up fran ...
@@iancaldwell3850 These are humans and not wild monsters. They need to truly understand what they did and being sorry about that and the lost freedom is their punishment.
But at the same time they need to be resocialised. They need perspectives for their lives. The us justice system for pure punishment doesnt work: isolation is breaking the peoples minds. Because of the aim for punishment most of the imprisoned people will get back in prison.
On top of that the us has the death sentence which makes them as bad as a murder themselfes.

I really like this interviewer. He’s not condescending but also asks great questions. He asks the questions in the best way possible.

Smiling during such an interview generally can also be a sign of understanding, of looking forward and being loving and respectful to the person one is talking to and to the persons surrounding oneself. But if there are no remorse, no regretful feelings and compassion towards the persons one has damaged that severely, trying to see the consequences it has in the life of that persons until the end, feeling and suffering for it very deeply, than something very fundamental is lacking and evilness is still present. On the other side, as harsh and disturbing it may be concerning to what I have stated before, she is being very honest and not lying about the reality of here feelings or lack of thereon.

You're falling for her act. During her original trial and for years there wasn't a peep about abuse, she just magically started claiming it after parole hearings with zero evidence.
@@ironwolf56 I dug around in her case and my position is shes a skilled manipulator that's had decades to finely tune a story that makes her the victim and not the 6 people she murdered. Granted, 16 year olds arent smart but they can be more dangerous than any adult because they have the physical ability to inflict adult damage but they have the faculties and maturity of a teenager. Sorry, I feel bad for her...truly. but I don't believe her.
I think the state would rather Hang her than let her out...Did You ever burn your finger? Think how it would feel to be burned to death while YOU scream for help and NONE is coming???
Think it's strange that she got out , but yet was trying to help the other's and 6 people died. Why was she so lucky ? Maybe if some of the 6 survived her story would make more sense .
This is the 2nd one I watched with this interviewer. He is so polite and calm while interviewing. Never a hint of judgement in his voice, which may be why inmates find it so easy to spill their guts and staff so easily explain things. Good going Sir McDonald!!

People like her should have been sterilized, if you abuse your children you shouldn't be able to have more. She said she made a promise to her boy before he was born to keep him safe. All I could think was, age probably made that same promise to her other 2 kids as well.
That would not work because it's about power!!
But still it's so bad for her to go out: she will loose the one hour, monday to friday, ping-pong session. :(

Oh knock it off. She is a master of manipulation. She lit 6 kids on fire and then acts so innocent for the camera..she on purpose burnt herself a little bit to sell the story of she "ran in" after she lit it to "get away" She's just lying.
16 years for murdering a 3-month-old? That people like that are walking around us is horrifying.
The people that are behind her getting out after 16 years should all be behind bars, that baby did not get justice.
Maybe someone else will do some justice in jail. Hopefully.

You know. It never ceases to amaze me how much of a professional reporter and investigative journast Trevor is. He never openly expresses judgment or opinion and never tries to make connections to wider agendas. He simply presents the reality of the situation, the un distorted facts of the matter to the viewer and leaves it to the individual viewer to form their own opinions and judgements. If every so called "professional journalist" was like him I would actually watch the news and investigative reports. Trevor is what the words Educated and Professional were supposed to reflect. This is accurate and professional reporting and because of that it has immense educational value and is enjoyable to watch.
What a lovely man, Sir Trevor McDonald, and such a gracious interviewer.
Now I know why he was knighted to "sir". His way of interviewing people is just something you don't see a lot of these days. He has respect for others, even though he might not agree with what they have done. He doesn't let his emotions take over. It's great journalism.
The focus of the documentary is to put these women in the best light possible. He didn't let his emotions take over, but don't be fooled that he doesn't understand his job is to NOT say anything that makes them look bad. He did his job of shaping people's opinions, and he's good at it - but that's not journalism, which is reporting facts without any spin. What he's doing is definitely spin.

Cindy has served her time! My god, that lady was only 16, and her brains cognitive ability wasn't even fully developed yet at that age, and that's why she thought setting a fire would be her escape. The moment she knew she had made a huge mistake, she ran back into that fire to save her abusers and their children. How was a 16yr old suppose to know without experience how that fire would spread?
Yet the baby killer is excitedly waiting her near release? Nah, now that's truly unfair!!! Especially that baby killer is not old enough for metapause, so what if she conceives again? Jesus. 😮
One girl answered questions about blinding a man like she was a beauty pageant contestant...big smile, happy nods...gave me chills.
Yes I don't know about the others but I think she shouldn't come out. She explained first that everything got out of control accidently but then speaks about not having any feelings at all after destroying a man's life.

This prison so clean compared to other documentaries i have watched.
Anyone whom is interested in pursuing a career in journalism or media please watch how Sir Trevor McDonald operates. He is non judgemental and unimposing as an interview. He remains calm and almost stoic in his responses. He allows the interviewee to reply and only interrupts for the purpose of clarification. He is genuine and sincere in his approach. His skill allows people to open up and be forthcoming willingly.

My friend is a new dad and his fiance is seriously agitated and agressive, he doesn't know what to do and I suggested that she may have PPD, I hope she doesn't do anything to the child
That Tabby Cat if she does she needs to go see a dr immediately. Women do crazy things when they have PPD. Some women are even told not to have anymore kids when it’s super severe!

Amy M I love really good documentaries as well. Have you ever seen "The Bridge"? It's about people who commit suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco (I used to live in the Bay Area). It is a fascinating documentary ... maybe because the subject matter itself is so emotional. Anyway, I hope there is another part to this prison doc ..? I didn't know there was a part 2! So this was a nice surprise. Is there a part 3? I hope so! :-)

It's a doc about a guy who works for a tv news show and he documents hours and hours of footage of his private life as he spins down into addiction and how it (life, love, family) falls apart and he just can't _stop_ himself (he's really likable too -- and his wife is this little Southern girl). It's from 2006 and is very well done. Here's a link, because it is not on CZcams.

Also, "Troublesome Creek," which is about grown children of aging farmers (their parents) and how the family has to auction off their farm to pay off debt (this is around the time of the American "farm crisis"). What makes me sick is that Cindy will spend the rest of her life in prison for making a horrific choice when she was 16, but the baby killer who laughed throughout her interview, abused her first two children and then shook her 3 month old son until he died, gets to go home. No of dead people (six), and the the visual horror of their deaths by fire. Also depends on the prosecutor, judge and quality of lawyer(s).

If she did have burns trying to save those people then i believe it really was just an accident. Regardless it still really is tbh. Her target was mainly the abuser not the innocent people that had nothing to do with her
I see it the same way. Or have a look at Ronald Sanford on death row. Terrible. He was 13 by the time he comitted the crime. So sad. And there is no justice in the system itself.

did you know some people laugh while they were in the midst of 9/11 right next to the towers, watching bodies? and also when interviewed about it they have a very specific thousand yard smile? sometimes it comes from internal bafflement to what they feel it is they are dealing with seeing or talking about, not always enjoyment of pain

So a woman who kills an innocent child. Gets out after 16 years. But a woman who has served 40 years for an accidental fire, will die in prison? Disgusting.
The fire wasn’t accidental and it killed 2 adults and 2 children, I agree with you that it’s horrible but it’s justifiable. Also, regarding the lady who killed her child was sentenced due to “shaken baby syndrome” and there’s about 1000 of those a year, the difference in her case is that she called for help through 911/paramedics which shows that it wasn’t malicious. It’s a lot harder to fight a case of malicious intent when you burned down a house with her whole family in it the way she did.

You can't tell the guilt a person might feel by a smirk on their face at first impression it might seem arrogant but that could also be a coping mechanism to not show how truly broken you are or how the guilt engulfs you it could either way you can't tell

He is a classy man, you can tell by his eyes and some moments of silence he is taking it all in and how shocked he really is by it all.
When I first saw him doing these prison documentaries, I rolled my eyes a bit because it seemed to me like he was just taking everything they said at face value. I've since come to really appreciate his approach. He does a masterful job of connecting with people and getting them to talk relatively freely, while still managing to make it very clear what they've done, and expose the lies and manipulation by some of them - all in the same level, soothing voice.

These stories, juxtaposed, show how incredibly disorganized our system is, it is almost laughable. The 23 yo woman who murdered her child (after losing custody if two others because of abuse) is let out after 16 years. The 16 year old child who desperately tried to escape abuse and ended up starting a fire killing 6 spends her life in jail. In my eyes, the punishments should be reversed.

I can hardly comprehend how a 16 year-old suffering from constant abuse who involuntarily murdered people would get life in prison. People change. She didn’t mean to do it and after all of these years, keeping her in prison is a waste. She could’ve had a perfectly fine life after a few years incarcerated, but the system is completely unfair and messed up so she’s stuck there while someone who has purposely killed a child is getting out.
Exactly and if we put ourselves in her shoes, we will feel so bad. Like when she was younger, she faced sexual abuse from her own family and when she tried to escape that life, she ended up in prison. She even burnt herself trying to protect those people in the house who abused her. She didn't mean to kill them.It's been so long, she should be released now.
I hope there is someone out there who reads these and will look into helping the girl who’s been locked up since she was 16, because it’s not right!! The baby murderer should be in there for life!!! I swear Indiana has the worst laws!!!

At 16 there is no one who can make rational decisions. I believe here in Belgium you can't get a life sentence at that age
My dad was a probation and parole officer. He had to listen to cases everyday. He was the type that if children were involved in anyway, he would just close the folder. The sad thing is, he would have in front of the board in Columbia when someone was up for parole, so whatever my dad said then mean anything.
