  • "I know the cost! Last night, gazing into that hearth, I saw things in the flames as well. I saw a king, a crown of fire on his brows, burning… burning, Davos. His own crown consumed his flesh and turned him into ash. Do you think I need Melisandre to tell me what that means? Or you?" - Stannis Baratheon
At the forefront of each Baratheon bannerman’s mind is the knowledge they serve one of the greatest tacticians of all Westeros, Stannis Baratheon. Not only a great leader on land, every fibre of Stannis is wrought with superior generalship. Even beating the Ironborn at sea during the Greyjoy rebellion, crushing Victarion Greyjoy at his own game.
Where the Tyrell bolstered ranks of the Renly loyalty faction are very much the anvil, the Rhllor inspired ranks of Stannis loyalty are very much the flame wreathed hammer, here to bludgeon the non believers into ash. Bringing with them, their own faith mechanic and self sacrificial playstyle.
Im much the same way as his brother, Stannis loyalty will give you access to three versions of the man himself. Stannis the rightful heir, the Rhllor fanatical Stannis - One True King and the mounted behemoth that is Stannis - King on the wall. But behind every good man is a powerful woman, and Stannis is no exception being able to call support from the Red Priestess Melisandre to baptise her foes with flame, not to mention his Queen and daughter Selyse and Shireen.
And who better to guide us through the choices and characters than our very own faction expert Szewster!!

Great Stuff as usual. Szewster has completely sold me on Justin Massey as a commander, completely misjudged his qualities. Keep up the great work and thanks to all of the faction experts for bringing these insights alongside Brett.

Great timing, just today I was thinking what to add to the Stannis list. I wish they would release a R'hllor heavy cavalry to replace Flayed Men (plus a cavalry with fire flails, fire swords or something like that would be pretty kick ass).

Haha! Glad to hear it, there isn't a rubbish day that can't solved with a suit of plate mail and a sledge hammer ;)

Not a tournament player, but I've had fun with Devan in Stag Knights. It helps mitigate wily opponents who steer clear of them, suddenly getting that long range charge off or just simply keeping an area clear of enemy by the threat of it happening. And due to their 7/7/7 attack profile they care a bit less about the loss of wounds, and the rerolls from conviction does some real work when they're powered up.
That said, the total of 9 points is really hard to justify, so best suited for casual play. But there is a lot of satisfaction when you slam them into an opponent late game and they just wreck face.

Hey Marc. Nothing wrong with enjoying casual play. Finding the combos you enjoy and running the miniatures and characters you enjoy is also a very good reason to play the game. How do you feel about the new attack profile and cost reduction on Stag Knights?

Thx a lot for this nice podcast.
Alester : I always thought that it was important to counter other armies (Lannister, Martell, ...) and that it was quite different from Petyr. But as every one says he is crappy, I am surely wrong :D
Mel Bomb: NPE is quite important and even if you can mitigate the effect of the Bomb with Weirwoods and high morale lists, this gameplay is probably one of the dumbest proposed by the game. It is not "too dicy", it it just "skill and funless" :)

Hey, thanks for the comment and for checking out the content. This game is so variable depending on your local meta. If Alester is working for you, keep running him, especially if you enjoy using him. Mel is a powerhouse, but the update may calm her down a bit?

I have found surprising value for Stannis King at the Wall in a double Hedge Knights list, with Alester Florent you can always guarantee bags and putting Bronn on archers to gain even more value from bags control whilst shooting into Stannis to gain value from Stubborn Tenacity + Sylese and Shireen. they have a much better offense than other cav options available to Baratheons, still as casual list but I think the attachments and card work much better on Hedge Knights than champions. I also think people often under estimate Alester NCU as he is rarely used, very nice to have into Martell to deny swords.

Incite sucks, thats why no one uses Andrew Attachment, and mounted Stannis is a let down. Cots had their dice dropped so getting max dice back is negligible, and vicious makes cots trying to play into panic but less effectively than FM. Incite on mounted Stannis was an order no players wanted nor does it do much to make Cots better. Stubborn Tenacity is ok. Mounted stannis really feels like he was designed around cots when they were at their peak, and since the nerf, he just doesn't bring enough to the table. He's a worse attachment than a glory seeker. I wouldn't even pay 1 pt for his attachment.

I like to put Davos commander on stag knights. keep them safe for a few rounds then they jump a unit that stayed too far to a flank with critical blow and vicious and davos giving them pathfinder to ignore that pesky terrain movement debuffs. And thats not using davos's tactics cards to get them a free pivot march pivot to set up another charge. It's like giving them rocket boots! haha

Hey! thanks for the comment. Sounds like you're getting a good load of work from Davos. Keep it up! Outflank is so much better now.

With Justin Massey, if you are bringing Kings Men and Queensmen that gives you 4 cards in your deck you don't care about discarding.
