Researchers working on Covid-19 vaccines have smashed speed records, bringing new vaccines from development to distribution in less than a year. They did this with the help of billions of dollars of unprecedented global investment -- but also, in some cases, with a new type of vaccine technology.
There are four traditional types of vaccines, and they all require the growing and handling of live pathogens in a lab, a time-consuming process than can add months or years to development. But two new types of vaccines skip that step altogether by moving that work from the lab to our bodies. mRNA vaccines, like the ones from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna; and Adenovirus vaccines, like those from Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca; do this by sending genetic instructions directly into our cells, which then produce the harmless protein the body needs to learn to fight Covid-19. Because these proteins are produced from within cells rather than injected from the outside, they may be less likely to provoke adverse reactions in the recipient.
The result has been a host of vaccines developed faster than ever. But it's also ushered us into a new age of vaccine technology, one in which we can send our own bodies the instructions on how to protect themselves. That technology is already being used to drive research on vaccines for HIV and cancer. These new types of vaccines are weapons we developed to fight the coronavirus - but their real impact is just beginning.

Current vaccines work against known new variants too. But if you son't want the vaccine, don't get vaccinated. You can always treat "China Virus" with hydroxychloroquine, bleach and internal UV treatment as suggested by The Great Orange.

I just got my first Pfizer shot and as I'm sitting here with a slightly sore arm (utterly normal), I am enjoying understanding what is happening in my body as I type this comment.

Strangely, even though I loved learning this and find it fascinating, it makes me a little nauseated to think of what is happening in my body from this. Even though I understand that itâs just using my bodyâs natural mechanisms to help me. Itâs weird, I get like that when I think too much about some things happening inside me. From what I hear the risk of complications from certain vaccines are higher for younger people and the risk from Covid-19 is lower for younger people. As I think my risk of getting serious complications from Covid-19 is about as close to 0 as you can get, I will not get the vaccine, but I can respect if people in risk groups determine it's safer to get vaccinated.

Nice video, however you didn't mention arguably best adenovirus vaccine - Sputnik V (Lancet already showed that it has better efficiency than JJ and Astra and can be compared with Pfizer and Moderna ). And they use a different platform to overcome a drawback that you mentioned.

I had one dose of Pfizer so far. Good to see actual explanation of what the vaccine does.
I hope Iâm able to take one as more are getting distributed in the days to come. My dad was tested positive. Hopefully itâs not a big deal as long as heâs doing the quarantine thing and drinking lots of water. The best I can do is eat raw garlic and water whenever I have the time. Maybe because science is evolution? It isn't because the Mumps vaccine was developed in 1961 and it took 4 years that the same should happen now. Just think how you no longer need to buy that band cd or wait for your favorite song to play in the radio anymore because everything is one touch away.

If spike proteins attach to the exterior of cells to excite the immune system, what is to stop the immune system from turning on these cells? Can we expect autoimmune problems down the line?
Why is nobody answering this question? This is what needs to be studied and asked. The company won't even be held liable for and side effects, people are literally guinea pigs right now.

I agree, I am normally not afraid to get other vaccines but I am so on the fence on this one. I was hoping they would explain the side effects and what happens when people have a bad reaction. I just want to know all of the facts before I decide and I donât think thereâs anything wrong with that.

This is a nice explanation. I'd love to have an open talk about what we don't know about the vaccines yet. Do the researchers themselves have any open questions or doubts, for now and for the future / durability of this approach? I would like to know that. Seems interesting to me to learn more about what's going on in research land.

Proteins do not self-replicate - while your circulatory system is chock full of various proteins....... Thus introducing an protein into the body which causes cells to generate a segment of protein will simply set up a corresponding immunogenic reaction consistent with what happens anyways when a pathogenic organism invades the body. Anytime a virus invades your cells then proteins etc. are produced by said cells.
The difference is that unlike a virus or bacteria the protein segment as noted can not reproduce itself while otherwise inert proteins are far less immunogenetic than microorganisms. So the generated spike protein is as far as the replicative process goes. Unlike producing new viruses which then infect other cells the "protein spike" does nothing beyond attracting the attention of immunoglobulins so as to cause them to generate a corresponding IgG specific antibody and destroy any impacted cells via apoptosis. đ€

Personally I'm a bit skeptical of these new methods since there was a period in Sweden where there was a major outbreak which caused rapid developement of a vaccine which ended up having huge side effects discovered a couple years later, I think I'll wait and see if any side effects show up before getting it myself

Super helpful and informative. I've read articles about the difference between AstraZeneca vaccine and Jassen, only to realize they function the same. Several online news websites still deem, or at least make it sounds like, AstraZeneca uses the traditional harmless weakened version of common flu in chimps, as opposed to using Covid's spike DNA in a chimp-derived adenoviral vector.
