  • Although not as heralded as the Oranje teams from the 1970s or even 1980s, the Netherlands side that went to the semi-finals of France 98 and only fell on penalties to Brazil had some amazing highs.

The Dutch always seem to have good players all over Europe, in the 70s Cryuff was the standout and in the 90s you had Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard, and others. It's amazing that the Dutch have never won the World Cup given how many strong teams they've had in the past.

SO much talent and beautiful football. Berkamp was one of my favorite players. Pure genious. '98 will always be in my heart 'cause Croatia won the Bronze in our first World Cup, but beside Croatia, my favorite team was Holland. I think since '94, but this team in '98 was something else. And what a World Cup...France, Holland, Italy, Germany, Brazil, Croatia, Argentina...SO many great teams. For me, Netherland/Holland playied the best football. Even tho we lost against France in semi finals 1-2 with only 2 goals from Thuram in his whole career for France and we won the Bronze against Netherland 2-1...I still think they were ina many ways the beat team on that World Cup. Loved your football and those players back then. My heart was broken when we lost semi finals against France and of course I was extatic when we won the Bronze against Netherland, but our goal keeper Ladić was at his apsolute best in that game. It's shame that you didn't do more or a lot more with that team in those years. France became super power with Zidane, Henry ect., but penalties....you lost against Brasil on penalties, but if I'am corect...you lost Euro 2000. on penalties too. Home coart, playied amazing again and then again game that you lost by missing one in game and them few of them in penalty shootout. Shame. It's like you just missed something...something to get on the top and then after that stay on the top for few more years. Always played ISS PRO with Netherland on playstation 1 and 2 back in the day :) Much respect from Croatia. Berkamp is one in a life time player

THE GREAT FORGOTTEN DUTCH TEAM OF 1998.... This title is so apt because until I click on the link, I really had forgotten just how good this team was. As it says in the video, player for player it was as good as the 1974 Dutch team and probably as good [if not better than] than any squad in the world at that time. In the video I couldn't find any players that I don't know or admire. So I did the Litmus test, and of the 22 Dutch players that went to France 98, I could name 21 of the 22 and I could even tell you what clubs they were playing for at the time. Dam!!! I don't think I could say that about any other squad at France 98 or at any other world cup tournament before or since.

YES! How was dirty dennis not sent off?? It was right in front of the lino and no call. Sinisa had to leave the game. I was at the QF and SF matches in Marseilles. I was hoping to see Jugoslavija. Serbia got cheated this World Cup when no penalty was called for wrestling Mitrovic to the ground. Srecno Serbija in the future. Brate from Greece.

Nice video, i can not agree on the title tho.
This team is even known under the youngsters of today.
Some real legends amongst that team.

That was the last great Dutch team in 1998, although i'd have to say i liked the 1988 team better. That's not to take away from the 2010 World cup team of Robben, Sneijder, and Kuyt but i think Bergkamp,Kluivert, De Boer's , Davids were more talented.

we can all say that Brazil VS Holland in that semi final is one of the best match in all the World Cup.

Their Euro 2000 team looked very strong. Also they were playing at home so they really should've won that one.

Not to take anything away from the 1988 team, but to say Robben was better, but not Sneijder and Kuyt, is nonsense! First of all, Robben may be incredibly talented, he also doesn't see his fellow players in the field enough. Sneijder is definitely a multi talent with an incredible decision speed, and always finding the offensive solution, which is a rare gift. Kuyt may not be a technical genius, but with his incredible effort and drive he would have been an asset for any team.

Definitely one of the strongest team at the world cup. So much quality . World players like Dennis Bergkamp, Jaap Stam and Marc Overmars. Talented players from Ajax 1995 like Patrick Kluivert ,Seedorf and Edgar Davids. It was really a pity that they missed the final like that.... On the other hand we played against top class Ronaldo and Rivaldo....

Holland vs France 1998 would have been a much better Final. France kicked the crap out of Brazil :) But Holland in my opnion would have matched up better with France. Holland should have won the semi and should have won 2010 also.

Based on the final in 2010 neither Spain or Netherlands deserved to win that final, both teams displayed their most frustrating style of playing... they were really scared of each other. And in 1998 they should've been in the final for sure, that was an amazing team... one of the best teams in a WC ever.

In 2010, there were three good teams: Spain, the Netherlands, and Germany. Sure, Uruguay and Brazil and some others were not terrible, but these three were the ones who should have won the most. I personally think any of the three were fitting winners, although I was cheering for Germany, my team. Spain played a very boring (yet effective) style of football, while Germany and the Netherlands focused on dazzling offense. Spain won because good defense usually beats good offense. An exception to this is the 2014 World Cup, when the world's best offense won, or in 2002, when Brazil (the best offense of the tournament) won.

I remember how afraid I was was at the prospect of facing holland in the final. As a french man I am sorry to all the dutch out there but I was happy when brazil won as I knew we could win against them. What this video doesnt show is how good this dutch midifeld and possession was. They were so accurate and fast. when they played, you expected them to trash their opponent. Good memories
