I don't blame any kid being scared of this movie back in the day! It was animated with motion-capture tech for its time, which can be uncanny valley-looking (though that's something that works well for this movie, imo), and the concept art had kind of a "Norman Rockwell listening to Goth rock and death metal" vibes.

I have a feeling that none of the kids in this world are safe, since the adults have literally zero sense of danger.

I think the idea they decided to go for was better. Having the house look like the insides of a human with real body organs would have been too over the top and would have kinda detracted from the horror. I think the fact that the house uses it's environment to assimilate the insides of a human body made it creepier.
It's funny how they made that Steve Buscemi joke when they don't even realize that Mr Nebercracker was played by Steve Buscemi himself.
They missed the best joke of the movie talking about male genitalia even though the joke was “so this is a girl house.” They would’ve had a field day with that one.

Monster House really caught me off guard as a kid. I would be looking sideways at all the houses in my neighbourhood if it was dark and I would have nightmares about the house chasing me through my own house. (Physically impossible, I know.) But now its one of my favourite comfort films.

I remember being a wee lil babey in the movie theatre watching this. Almost half the kids got fuckin spooked in the first 10 minutes and left. I stayed for just over half of the movie and cried. That was the only time i went to the movies with my dad.
this is what i mean when i say i like dark comedy. they make jokes that are sometimes just absolutely terrible, but it's never punching down, and they often use shock comedy in positive ways as well, like the cop jokes. idk i just love these videos sm.

This used to be one of my sister and I's favorite Halloween movies as kids. I think the only part I ever found truly disturbing was her getting covered in cement in the flashback to them building the house. That'll always be a bit of a disturbing thought of something that could happen on accident if you were maybe alone or enough cement to not be able to help.
