Returning to this in 2021 and it's just classic. Rudy's older videos hold up better with age and the message stays the same. Taco King knows where it's at.
"I'm not going to go into taxes in this video because quite frankly, most of you guys are going to turn the video off and you're going to fall asleep and then you're going to wander around the internet looking for top ten lists of stupid crap." Hahaha. I would love a video on taxation aspects of investing in magic.
Hello Rudy, Awesome video! To sum it up: Long term investing requires a time frame of five years. With an estimated value increase of 10-15% every year for magic product. Starting up, eBay and PayPal will reduce profit by ~12% (net profit) Natural Attrition will ensure that supply gradually decreases and as long as the set you invested in is in demand, the price will go up. Pro's of sealed product: 1. Lower shipping costs compared to singles 2. Gamblers bait, i.e., the premium price for unopened product and the chance of opening more than what the client paid for/opening and feel of opening booster packs 3. Gem Mint quality Pro's of singles: 1. You can play with them until you sell them 2. Take up less storage space Let me know if I forgot anything important! A few questions, I would love to hear more about the taxes associated with your investment strategies as well as the shipping methods you employ. I was also wondering what vendor you sell under on eBay and what formats you most enjoy in magic. Cheers for the great video! - Jace
I like that you are straightforward and how you throw those cards and boxes around. I mean they may or do have great value but you show that they are just materials, no need to be too attached. Keep this channel up - hobby and investing tips in general on a same channel!
There are sooo sooo many videos that you could make now in 2021 about how he called it back in the day. Crazy thing is, you just keep making good videos and talking about the truth. Good on you for following your own advice and staying the course!
OMFG you are the best MTg youtuber that has ever LIVED!!!!! You are a blessing to this world! Thanks for being so real and thanks for just being yourself!!!!
It is refreshing to get someone with a business education to talk about investments. So many times I grit my teeth, remind everyone that singles are a game, not a retirement plan. You on the other hand actually make it sound possible.
The Educational Value itself in these videos are absolutely to die for. Keep these coming- You're incredibly intelligent to even think about this. Thank those that you believed in when attacking this!!!!
You would be a fantastic teacher since you speak with so much confidence and keep the content engaging. I'm happy I subscribed after Deriums gave you a shout out.
its amazing to see how the bookshelf has evolved over the years. Starting with his accounting degree stuff and of course Marilyn to the return to return to return ravinca, box of hope and dreams, the pokemon, the collectable video games its wild
Nobody told me that you have been an expert at keeping a straight face during your shenanigans from the very beginning lol. Glad you are still here bud.
Damn. I don't play MTG but good god man, that was interesting as hell. I probably understand about 70% of whatever you are talking about but it's like watching a badly dubbed 90s Mexican soap just without all the perfect people and boobs at every other frame. You can't just look away. Good on you man.
you must be earning alot of money to be able to cracking 200+boxes and still have that huge amount of boxes left. your garage must be full o display boxes. really enjoy your videos man. you're an intelligent, well spoken and funny to watch. keep it up.
New to the channel and new to collecting/investing. Starting wayyyy back as you can see. I don't know very much at all so seems like the best place to start.
0:20 Managic xD (good one, regardless if pun intended or not) Great vids! Sealed product rocks for investment. But I am allergic to sealed product... so I always open every single booster like a mad dog to avoid the symptoms. Symptoms of sealed product allergy are yet unknown, because nobody with the allergy ever lasted long enough before opening said sealed product. Your detachment to the boxes and cards as you throw them around is a clear indicator that you hold no affection towards the crackling sound of a booster pack, or the smell of freshly opened most-of-the-time junk cards that should have otherwise been drafted.
Working for a Bank as a Investment advisor, i like how you look at magic from the investment side. Never tought about Magic like that. For me it has just been a game ... Great Video ! :)
way to strip the fun outa the game Rudy! great video #10 i really appreciate the wealth of knowledge and givin it to us straight (giggity) about the money side. keep up the good work...oh wait you do.... for a few more years anyway
First video I’ve watched of yours.....I like it. You’ve got yourself a subscriber. Got into Magic when I was a teenager (‘93-‘95). Went and got my old cards from my parents house a few months back, and was curious about the newer sets. Some of my collection is Unlimited, less is Revised, but most of it is 4th edition, and I guess some promos from 1994? (NOT Summer Magic, it has a copyright date like 4th edition but says 1994 instead of 1995). I’ve seen videos that say they’re worthless. Anyway, I’m gonna keep watching, thanks for the solid video.
just found this one Rudy. The things you know. Seems like we are kindred spirits. I was a stock broker, life insurance agent and financial planner. Studied Economics at the Post Grad level....Maybe I can be the Canadian Rudy....dreams of glory....
Good video, thanks for sharing these insights. I know a lot of people knock booster boxes as investments when the goal is to open everything and come out ahead, but buy and hold does seem to be a strong strategy. Is there much data out there on the changes in price on individual cards vs sealed booster boxes? Ie. whether individuals or boxes tend to have more price volatility, higher or lower yearly change in value, etc.?
How did I miss this video? Am I an idiot? Thanks for taking it back to the basics Rudy. I'm just gonna blaim my lack of common Sense on greed. Good day sir
So, I bought Xx boxes of Return to Ravnica at the time for an average of 85 dollars. Considering the minimum 5 year window has almost hit the home stretch, how much do you expect it to grow in the near future? It hasn't really grown, and I feel like turning into other product at this point might be a good idea.
Hey Rudy, where is a safe place to keep these investments? Is diversifying my storage locations the best way to mitigate my risk here? Also how do you protect them (what kind of insurance do you have for them)?
I like the cards that are bulk that might slowly creep up. That is a sort of "budget basket" for those who want to invest in a set, but don't have enough money for lots of sealed product.
when you get a chance can you rate the last 10 or so magic expansions in value long term im looking at fate kahns and oath at 75 a box buy point and buying a case of each a month for the long haul did origins but its crept up so im on hold unless i find it sub 95 a box thoughts ? and any box exept gatecrash and dragonssmaze at below 65
I don't even sell Magic cards by any means, but between the mtg investing insight and the mtg card porn, I am hooked. Plus Rudy is right, as everyone knows, opening boosters is a lot of fun.
Antiquities, Unlimited, Alliances, and all 3 URZA's blocks are what I collect!! I've bought mostly reserve list singles from Card Kingdom, only in NM condition, and then booster packs of Alliance's and URZA's from only established sellers. Ive been on ebay for over a decade. I know how to choose the right sellers. So far every pack passes the eye test. If they were repacked all this time when I go to sell them in 20 years, so be it. People want the sealed product. Ill have it. LONG LIVE THE RESERVE LIST!! Quit MTG in 2000 bc i was too young to understand the game. Just getting back into it since the summer at age 29 as of 12/15/18 GIGGITY!
Rudy quick question... I see most online stores charge me for the actual shipping. So are they incurring in this loss? Or are they passing the loss to the customer, by making the customer pay for the shipping?
I think you are 100% right about sealed product but looking at your collection is so much fun. Another plus of singles is you don't need a lot of space to store.
Why do you get hate, this is all good practices that actually help stabilize a product with love and produces a way to give yourself free product. Whats to hate? It cost me nothing to watch these videos and I am saving money from the advice. ❤
Can't imagine investing in any Zendikar Fat Packs was a bad idea. And I can't imagine investing in fat packs is a bad idea now either considering they're "technically" leaving. Although we're really just getting a modified version of a fat pack. Although I would assume that the "gambler's premium" as Rudy calls it is much smaller for Fat Packs so if you're gonna invest in sealed product.. why not just invest in booster boxes? Even if you don't have that much capital to invest I think it'd be wiser to invest in 1 box than 2 or 3 fat packs from the same set. (generally speaking. obviously some fat packs are a whole different story)
+Adam Schiedler just my two cents, but I'm not as well learned in economics as Rudy is. So, i'd still like to see what he has to say about it! But yeah, my thought process is this: Some fat packs do better than others: any fat pack related to zendikar (for the full arts) Fat packs are "technically" disappearing so they will be desired Eventually i suppose for their antiquity. Downside: the majority of a fat pack is known. The less packs, the less "sealed" that product really is when you think about it, cause you know what you're getting.
This also assumes you are not playing the cards (pure investment in large quanitites). I will almost ALWAYS say singles are a better investment because 90+% of the Magic I play is constructed buying the singles and keeping them in as good condition as possible makes it possible to 1)play 2)get prize packs then 3)sell the money singles as they go up in time for maximum return on investment. This is also why I believe standard is a bad investment; you can play, and get prize packs but the card's value will expire except in rare cases.
I love how on 4 years, Rudy is the same person. The consistency is fantastic. Keep it up taco king.
I see I wasn't the only one who got recommended this video out of the blues.
5.5 year and still yes!
You ever see him in a damn tie nowadays?!
"if you have less than $20,000 in paypal sales per year, paypal will not report it to the IRS"
boy these were the good ol days
I honestly love how you just keep chucking those booster boxes around. hahahaha. Good times!
Watching these archived vids, and man your advice was still underappreciated and underrated!!!
Returning to this in 2021 and it's just classic. Rudy's older videos hold up better with age and the message stays the same. Taco King knows where it's at.
Rudy should just reupload this video every 3 months. :P
"I'm not going to go into taxes in this video because quite frankly, most of you guys are going to turn the video off and you're going to fall asleep and then you're going to wander around the internet looking for top ten lists of stupid crap." Hahaha. I would love a video on taxation aspects of investing in magic.
1. You don't pay taxes
I vote too

Damn Rudy, your channel is blowing up! Good job, man.
Great video by the way!

Great video. It'd be great to revisit this 101 material again with more recent examples.
Nobody told me that you have been an expert at keeping a straight face during your shenanigans from the very beginning lol. Glad you are still here bud.
The "gamblers experience" or as I like to call it the "nostalgia effect" and yes it's real!
I really appreciate this kind of video!
These are the videos that I loved
Damn. I don't play MTG but good god man, that was interesting as hell. I probably understand about 70% of whatever you are talking about but it's like watching a badly dubbed 90s Mexican soap just without all the perfect people and boobs at every other frame. You can't just look away.

Hey John, Just remember. Just because someone online says they are worthless does not mean they are worthless to you.
@@mccraeday5809 Very true!
Great video thanks
Rudy! Does opening the box of a case of booster boxes impact the value if you plan on selling a case later?
Great video Rudy! Honest advice from a guy who has done it. Hope people take away and start making some money!
Thank you Sir, best MTG Vintage dealer in the country!

How did I miss this video? Am I an idiot? Thanks for taking it back to the basics Rudy. I'm just gonna blaim my lack of common Sense on greed. Good day sir
Rudy!! you are da real MVP!!!!
Would you still recommend this for specialty reprint boxes like M25? Will those be better to sit on or to crack packs for?
Good stuff bro!
Good ole' Rudy shipping Media Mail.
So, even though fast flipping for profit is discouraged, what way would you do it if you had to? Product? Quantity? Maximum time frame?
Would you consider doing the same but from a "collector's perspective"?
So, I bought Xx boxes of Return to Ravnica at the time for an average of 85 dollars. Considering the minimum 5 year window has almost hit the home stretch, how much do you expect it to grow in the near future? What are other ways to ship things other than the post office?

Hello from 2021, you could say things haven´t changed all that much.

Quit MTG in 2000 bc i was too young to understand the game. Just getting back into it since the summer at age 29 as of 12/15/18
GIGGITY!
You must be happy with your investment now :)

I think you are 100% right about sealed product but looking at your collection is so much fun. Another plus of singles is you don't need a lot of space to store.
all about risk management when it comes to choosing what direction to go
But if you're doing it for an investment with the sole purpose of investing and making money in the long-run, looking at your cards is irrelevant.
Why do you get hate, this is all good practices that actually help stabilize a product with love and produces a way to give yourself free product. Whats to hate? It cost me nothing to watch these videos and I am saving money from the advice. ❤
Great suggestions! Would love more videos on this topic. What about investing in products such as duel decks, event decks, fat packs, etc?
