We took apart a Hayabusa engine to find out how this tiny engine is capable of deadly speeds… and then tried to put it back together. Easy, right?

It has to be done.

Jerry out here sabotaging the bike to have an excuse to make it better. We on to you bruh and we appreciate it.😂
it was probably already cracked and thats probably why they initialy disassembled it
No from the looks on his face he didn’t do that on purpose lol 😂
@@jamesfair9751 its call TV. The face of the actor on CornHub are also fake! if you think this is real... poor you🤦♂️
@@1nicube I think they already knew because I didn't see them putting in all the gaskets. It's mostly theatre in this episode. Why pull a motor apart and then do zero work on it, and just put it back together?
@@andoletube exactly!
It is a fast bike because of how it looks, that was Suzukis entire goal. The body fairings were extremely aerodynamic.
As someone who made connecting rods for motorcycles for a good while, I think it's VERY important to look at that bushing in the rod/wrist pin and see if there's wear marks. On a motor putting out as much power as a friggin BUSA, revving as high as it does, I wouldn't be surprised if they were toast (depending on mileage/abuse), and that will blow a motor. I'm not sure how many bikes have bushings in the top end of the rods, but it's a very nice touch for very well engineered bike. ALSO 9:01 is why you tape a cloth to the top of your rods when assembling a motor like this. Any ding on the case could break a seal.
busa dont rev high i think max rpm would be 11500rpm ?
Did you notice how the engine is or was? Frequent oil changes with the right oil. Coolant etc.
I put over 100,000 Km on my Busa, she still purred like a Kitten. Granted, she was my daily ride and I didn't do track days or a lot of hard riding (a lot of filtering in heavy traffic) but I still liked to twist the wrist and have some fun now and again.
true...also they didnt check bearings on con rods and crank....and lots of more things.i have just posted a comment on their sloppy work

THIS WAS MY BIKE!! Can’t believe you guys got your hands on it! I have video proof on my channel. I had so much fun on it, it was my first “super sport” motorcycle. *EDIT* ALOT of Time & Money spent rebuilding that bike cosmetically and mechanically.
It was very run down when I purchased it from its original owner.
can’t wait to see what you guys do with my old girl! 🤞🏻🤟🏻
Can confirm he is telling the truth
Daaang! Ur lucky u get to watch ur own build dude.
they cracked that motor tho. Good think they’re rich and can make it a beast again
Wow you weren’t lying
@@fafscape9961 I’m shocked, I sold it to an older gentlemen, was sure he’d keep it, and now it’s on donut media. Mind blown! Lol

Jerry’s talent as a 2 wheel operator is always impressive
smoooooth operator
Thats his bread and butter. When he first joined Donut he was there for nerd talk and never really showed love for cars like he did for bikes. Then he got his own episodes with bike themes and his spark showed.
During coronavirus these two were put together to make tool comparison videos and they became close there. Warching that series you can see the chemistry grow and now these two make for a great host pair.
Less impressive is not knowing the name for a crankcase and calling the block 'the cylinder'
@@mycosys when you work on bikes and cars things get mixed sometimes. Such a minuscule detail to bitch ab
hell no! he does NOT have a clue of what he is doing, on the other hand, Jobe is a good mechanic with brains.
I think the ad for Valvoline was about as professional and good as it couldve possibly been.
Hats off to the Donut team
i gotta say guys, these teardown videos are gold. ive been back to this one 4 or 5 times to help me workout a project im planning
It is technically a fast bike due to how it looks as well. Not only did it have the power but it had the areo designed specifically for top speed that other bikes lacked at the time.
This!! Thank you! The sheer amount of aerodynamic engineering and testing behind this bodywork cannot simply be glossed over in “..but its not fast because of how it looks” when it quite literally is a huge factor.
@@zorikos_the aerodynamics were also designed to make it comfortable for the rider which many sports bike of the times were not. The hayabusa is truly a marvel of engineering.
Yup, it was performance 1st over looks 🆚 better looks with poorer performance.
💯
The ZX12r (the younger sister bike to my ZX9r, although mine is a Y2k bike), was a better bike all round as it could also go over 200mph unrestricted, but looked a lot nicer than the Hayabusa, subjective, but not really 🤣🤣
A maintenance manual and bagging and tagging techniques would be massively helpful with stuff like this.
I *usually* bad & tag big jobs.. especially at work. However I recently shot myself in the foot on a person project. Oh well; I’ll get it but I wish I had.
New jobs never done b4 and/or new mechanics adhere to this advice! Ziplocks and a sharpie do the trick.
When they said we should be looking at the manual not trying to remember how it went, I felt that. Reminded me of a rebuild with my dad, but with a lot less swearing, mumbling and busted knuckles.
I have a whole civic engine torn down and labeled in zip locks. Works great for keeping all the internal parts clean and rust free if you need to store them.
Erin approved this advice
Bagging and tagging is a big help
I love it guys! Finally someone making the same mistakes I make. This is usually how my builds go too.
I used to build injectors (massive hydraulic machines for coil tubing) and the brake system is literally the same as a hyabusa clutch. A bunch of clutch & metals plates between plates, 8 screws and springs that get released by a hydraulic ram. I am a millwright and always wanted to work on cars more and bikes. Good to know that some things translate between my job as a millwright and my wanting to work on cars n bikes more
These boys are scary good at creating ads.
I genuinely end up smiling after watching them.
Because Donut Media as a brand supports Valvoline which supports Israel, I will no longer recommend a single video from your company. Think of your decisions!!!
I still skip them 🤣
it's so far beyond CZcams channel ads. Some good real broadcast, TV, commercial scale now.
they reimind me of late 2000s adds that youd see on tv
Shaboingboing riding SO hard right now
We neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed more bike content on Dounut please
I love motorcycles but they're boring. You can't drift the motorcycle "competitively". The modifications are super easy. You can make a whole video about it.
Bro we just wanna see cool bikes..
@barouqa there are competitive drift events for motorcycles though💀 nvm I lied I'm thinking of something else
Wrong channel
Would be cool if they learned what a crankcase and block are, tho
im planning to open my own bike repair shop but i never repair a bike at all not even my own bike so this channel is perfect for me to learn while im saving money to do what i love the most to the point where i get crazy when i see an old unique bike's engine😂
Watching you take the engine out reminded me of doing that on my Honda CB900F back in the '80s...
Having only a very bare set of tools, I removed the fairing and all the engine bolts, laid the bike on its side, on a duvet on the grass...
And lifted the BIKE off the ENGINE!
Oh, the terrible things we do when we're young and broke!!!
Finally a motorcycle video! I’ve been waiting for it for years. As someone who’s rebuilt quite a few single and twin cylinder bikes I actually really appreciate you all showing the work that goes into it. It’s very cool to see the insides of the hayabusa and Jerry did a great job explaining and showing everything. Please let him do more bike videos in the future! I’m so glad it finally happened.

My old GSX-R 1000 K6 blew my mind when I found it had 8 throttle body plates, independent throttles, 8 fuel injectors and it never went wrong as opposed to my new bikes that had constant issues. Suzuki are so underrated ❤️
Was starting to wonder why you guys didn't remove the bucket and shims from the valves or mic out the cylinder out of round amongst other things. Great set up video for a full power sports engine tear down and rebuild.
If you have to get the rods through the holes again in the future, tie some decently long strings onto each. Thread the strings through the hole then drop the top back on. You can use the strings from above to pull them straight up with no hands getting sandwiched inside. Edit: Exactly like you ended up doing with the chain.
'ave ya got a tutorial on how to suck eggs too , geremie?
Or built the engine up upside down like its meant to... but they are just fucking around and will rebuild it the proper way for sure

I went to school to work on motorcycles. I studied the 4 big japanese bikes but never got too far when it was time to work at a dealership. Better hobby than a career if that makes sense. Whenever I fail at car related mechanics I'm going to remember this video and feel a little bit better about my technical prowess. Love you boys
Pity you werent there to tell them what a crankcase and block are
@@mycosys Lmao it's understandable. Car engine terms and motorcycle engine terms always trip me up and I mix them up from time to time lol. Lowering the cylinders over the pistons and conrods practically killed me lmao. I got shit at my dealership because I didn't debur new piston rings OR use a sleeve tool to install new pistons and scratched the cylinder on my first engine rebuild there. Shit was so embarrassing man lol.
@@PastelBlackBunnyI went to school for bikes also. Harley Davidson early and late model, Yamaha and Suzuki. I never went to work for a dealer either. I love working on engines, transmissions are fun too. Mostly I just build bikes at home. Sometimes repairs and flip, other times full custom builds. It keeps me from ripping up my personal bikes to often. Passing my 87 sporty down to my son. We are finalizing how he wants it then we will do a ground up build on it. Already rebuilt the engine and converted the trans to a 5 speed.

Just FYI. Stay away from the Harley-Davidson 1970s American bowling company production line when they purchased Harley-Davidson and no offense to anyone. But it was a very difficult motorcycle to work on with the American bowling company and even now trying to find parts for those years of Harley's. Good luck

I’ve wanted to do a Suzuki Carry Hayabusa build for a long time. Engine on display in the bed with an LSD chain drive. Rocket bunny kit, and you get to keep it in the Suzuki family. Pretty much a sequential shifting jdm monster go kart. Would love to see it.

Donuts media creation team is nothing short of amazing. The creative ads they come up non stop are fantastic.
Watching donut is one channel that taught me the parts and how it works of an engine, shi i dont even have a car or motorcycle
I have a GSX1100ef 16v. Which is the grandaddy of this engine. Vance and Hines hit the first 200mph pass using this engine. The Suzukis have always been special. A turbocharged Busa is a weapon beyond belief but can be reliable. Mental engines.
So stoked to see bikes more often here. Such cool machines
Same I really hope they keep making more of them
couldn't agree more
FYI on most sport bikes like the busa. The transmission is designed to be shifted without the clutch. Even without a quick shifter. It's the same design as those sequential dog boxes that you car guys use. Only need to clutch when taking off or stopping. Shifting you can just blip the throttle and rip into the next gear.
Most motorcycles in general
In general you're right, but in experienced hands, a slip of the clutch can often assist shifting under full throttle. Principally we need to create an " unloading " of the gear dogs momentarily to allow shift drum and fork to push the gear into the next gears dog. Either cutting fuel, cutting ignition or in this case slipping the clutch at full throttle creates that unloading and bam our sequential gearbox shifts !
Much love from Alberta Canada 🇨🇦
Jerry with the deep sea, bold move in the shop, I love it
Sick! cant wait for part 2
I had one in the early 2000's and it was so hard to ride at low speeds. But in a straight line it was second to none! Very fun and scary bike. I ended up with a RF900 instead
Yes!! More motorcycle content please! I need this on real mechanic stuff
2:36 that way of describing throttle response is so accurate (and unusual) ...

Busa engine is either going in the Chang li mini truck or the mini bike. Either way I’m stoked!
My older brother had Hayabusa with a new exhaust and small turo setup. A Normal law abiding drive from muskogee Oklahoma to Tulsa is about 30-40 minutes.. He made it back before me in 18 minutes and was waiting at the turnpike exit for awhile until I showed up. This bike is unnecessarily fast but I'm not complaining 😅.
the hartley V8's using the cylinder heads of hayabusas are nutty.....its crazy how a small turbo and this engine can put so much power into a small package.

I love how I get a valvoline add with the donut crew before a donut video
1:07 the looks are one of the big reasons the bike is fast! it's fairings are more aerodynamic than the more angular design of other bikes that existed at that time. they were inspired by bullet trains in part
OMG, I actually paid attention through the ad. That was funny and timely.

The upsidedown cylinder block got me... 😂😂

Build the world's fastest go kart using a Hayabusa engine!
Will definitely want a part 2 ❤
Excited to see the swap, I just got a 79 fiat x1/9 and have been looking at engine swap options for the (probably far) future. They only make 70 hp or so stock so a Hayabusa would be a night and day difference
You've got a golden engine in the x1/9, you just need to put some work in it to make out the potential it has
A busa motor in that little thing would be sick bro
If you’re looking at an engine swap, Honda K-Series, the Fiat Multi-Jet or Five Cylinder Turbo from the Fiat Coupe might work.
Donut never disappoints when it comes to ads, original 🙌

The timing chain tension struggle reminds me of setting temkin bearing In-play.. just kind of guessing at first and seeing what you get lol
Watching you struggle with the camshafts was so funny because it had the literal same problems when I did a rebuild on a 2007 model last week
Btw you can google up a pdf on how to assemble the whole engine. As I work for Radical, I have access to a pdf guide that’s 663 pages long

Love your content 👌
A little tip for when you put the bottom end and cylinders together, tie strings to the rods that goes thru the cylinders and tie them to a engine hoist or something above, it keeps them always centered and makes that whole thing a lot easier.
I was thinking one person alone could get the cyl block on the pistons the same way using strings.
@@michaelbrinks8089 that's how I always did it

It kinda looks like an Oni mask, if you think about it 🤔 hence the grotesque look
If I get a biking license, I would definitely love to experience one of these behemoths.
Yeah, i though the same, very 3 eyed Oni
Put it in an old bug or Cooper. Interestingly, there are some folks out there that make a chain differential with a selector that can run both directions. You don't have to worry about a drive shaft. Everything will run directly from the busa transmission. Also, because there's a selector for which direction the differential turns, you have a reverse directly out of the box. As an added bonus you can go full Fast and Furious and shift through multiple reverse gears.
Those are insane motorcycles. I still love how they look.
I am so damn happy for more motorcycle content
I want a bike so badly. My dream bike is an R1M, but I’ve always liked Hayabusas. Something that small and that fast just seems so wild. I’d have a lot of fun on something like that
This is awesome, can you bring back Sci-garage? Keep dropping that knowledge one the folks.
I too didn’t like the look of the Busa at first. But now that im older, i absolutely love the look of the 2nd gen busa and still want one. Maybe when im done with my 1K it’ll be next
I’ve got the 2003 GSXR 1000 it’s not the Hayabusa but the engine is similar they are so easy to work on anyone with a bit of mechanical knowledge, can pull the engine apart, put it back together
Well that was anti-climactic! I wanted to see it run and before I knew it, it was the end of the video 😢 looking forward to seeing the next installment of this project! Hopefully soon!!! 😂❤
I love the idea at the end. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Also, not to piss in anyone's cheerios, but whoever told you that a 'busa would go "well over" 200mph with the limiter removed was wrong. That first gen might INDICATE over 200mph on the speedometer but you won't be going as fast as indicated. It takes modification on any busa to hit an honest 200mph. Once you complete your build, I'd love for you guys to use GPS or radar and show your new top speed. 😁 Please?.... I've had a couple of Busas and I really want to see this.
After googling I see like most experts you might be sort of correct, depending on where you move your goalpost. Looks like its not getting it to 200MPH in the mile, but plenty seem to think that if you gave her a little more room to stretch you can touch it.
@@gmailisaretard I disagree, and have owned and ridden Busas for years. A Gen 1 would top out at around 192 and a Gen 2 at about 195, maybe 196.
There used to be a company on Vancouver Island in BC that imported Caterham 7's and put Hayabusa engines in them. They were reportedly absolutely srupid fast. Wish I had got one but the owner, David Saville Peck, passed away a couple years ago and no more are being made.
Still waiting for part II. Jobe and Jerry together make the best duo.
