We bought a $500 motorcycle and compared it to a brand new $50,000 Harley-Davidson to see if it's really worth 100x the price.

That new Road Glide is ugly as a mofo, and I could never see spending $50k for a motorcycle let alone for a Harley and that’s coming from someone who’s owned several.

That new HD is something else. Not to mention if you get it for msrp you’ll be able to sell it next year and at least recoup your money, after all the riding. That Goldwing is definitely a good buy for $500, which I’m seriously doubting.
That Goldwing looks super-comfy especially if you're planning on having someone ride with you regularly... And with that price there's more than enough money left to fix it up to turn it into a real treat.

@@shblairI usually attribute it to more that people who buy them usually can afford to buy them new. These large cruisers are very common in the used market and drop in price quick. Still some of the best buys as they're usually the best maintained

@@shblairthey were all expensive when new, and they were seen as dorky and for old guys, so a lot of them were bought by dorky old guys with money to spend who took really good care of them. You don’t have to settle for a busted or mistreated GW because you can either save up another $200-$500, or just wait, and get one that was babied
I had a 2014 Goldwing Valkyrie which is the muscle cruiser. 118 HP, 124 lb/ft of torque, shaft drive, and a single sided swing arm. It was a VERY fast bike for its weight and should not be underestimated. The flat six engine is amazing and smooth as silk.
I owned 2 valks 99 interstate and a 2001 touring loved them both ,never a problem smooth ride and tons of power.

My buddy had one of the first Valkyries and it was like a spaceship compared to a Harley.
Was going to say the Valkyrie was the only other bike with the flat 6 if I'm not mistaken. They used to advertise it's smoothness by placing a quarter on the engine 👌🏾

My grandfather was a Goldwing guy. After he retired, he’d stick my grandmother on the back and they’d take off on insanely long road trips. They drove that thing all the way from TX to Alaska, then followed that up with a trip from TX to Central America.
Our grandparents should hang out..Mine road theirs from SoCal down through Mexico and down into Chile...they're crazy. I'll ride mine all over the State but through parts of Mexico and Central America can be a bit risky.

Do a series where you put $49,500 into it and make it 10x what the Harley is. Similar to your old vs new Honda series. Gullwings are the Cadillac of motorcycles, big boats that have the best seats for long drives and more options than you need. I've seen custom bikes that upgraded everything and added air ride suspension and look amazing.
I want a whole episode of Jerry and Jobe giving that Goldwing some TLC.
A Hi/Low motorcycle series would be amazing!

I have owned several new Gold Wings in the 80s and 90s.
I currently own the CVO Road Glide in Whiskey Neat.
I agree with y’all’s assessment of the two bikes overall.
With 2 ½ million miles behind me, I feel a touch qualified to make a judgement.
1. The HD suspension absolutely sucks - that’s why many owners are replacing it with far superior aftermarket brands.
2. The price of the HD is astronomical - everything with the Bar & Shield emblem is jacked up too high,
3. The accouterments are a definite plus on the RG.
Only a few things to aggravate the owner:
a. The saddle is a dud. I replaced mine with a custom rebuild which gave me copious amounts of joy,
b. Electronics challenges (constant code alerts),
c. All handlebar switches were swapped between left and right (takes a while to relearn),
d. Nothing from the past Road Glides fit this new one.
e. The four Wings that I owned and rode for over 300K, NEVER had a wrench turned on them,
f. Among the twenty-two HDs that I had, EVERY ONE except two had maintenance issues ranging from drive belts to blown engines!!
All of that being said, I’ll still keep my HD!

It seems no matter how much you pay for a harley, you have to customize it to make it right. Goldwing doesn't have the "harley status," but it's aimed for a different crowd and more complete from the factory
I mean, Harleys are worlds most expensive semi-finished products. And as a Harley owner I really do confirm this.
Yeah and believe me when I say GOOD..... Harley is geriatric highway riders and “tough” guys who want to be told where to be by a club.
never forget that harley had to lobby the US government to make foreign motorcycles more expensive...then they still went bankrupt like 5 times. Harley's are garbage motorcycles that exist solely on reputation because of geriatric old people who have a retirement fund to spend.
50K and you still have to add stuff to make it capable of doing what is meant to do? Go figure their market share is shrinking.

Sonny Barger once said he hated the rule about having to own a Harley as a Hells Angel because he later grew to love the bikes that were coming out of Japan, and other parts of the world.
However, he also said that it had originated as a way to support American manufacturing, as the club started post WWII when a lot of soldiers were coming back and working in factories. Not to mention Japan had been the enemy in the war.
I love that we get motorcycle content now. And these two as a duo rock!

Fun video. The low center of gravity on the Goldwing sold me. I'm not a big guy, so it's easy to ride, and the DCT is even more so. I had a Road Glide some time ago and love the shark nose fairing's style. Ride what makes you happy.

Love the bike content. I do wish you would have compared the Goldwing to a Harley Davidson Ultra classic. The Ultra Classic has a huge passenger seat with a comfortable backrest, just like the Gold Wing. I think that would have been a more far comparison

One thing though, that Harley is not a CVO Limited. The Limited for this new model is not out yet and Limiteds usually come with the tour pack and backrest for the passenger like the Goldwing. Also comes with taller suspension in the rear (13" vs 12" on that bike)
I traded my 2020 Road Glide Limited for a 2018 Goldwing Tour DCT and have never been happier. The HD was like straddling a slow, heavy oven. Too hot to enjoy beyond 60 degrees. The Goldwing is all day easy and comfortable to ride and will run circles around the heavy American. I noticed you weren't able to put the Harley in reverse... Also, I had to spend an extra $1,200 for the HD heated seat, which in retrospect wasn't needed thanks to the rear cylinder crotch cooking feature it comes with.
I wish more Harley owners would just give it up and switch to better brands. HD really is an embarrassing line of transportation.
@kincaid9134 as a harley owner who also owns and has owned several Hondas, kawasaki, and Ducati bikes over the years, I will say this.
It's a matter of preference. No honda will ever sound like a harley, and for many, that's what the big draw is. My 2013 harley ultra just sounds and rides amazing. I also currently own a 99 Honda valkyrie. They are pretty close in creature comforts, but the valk has a lot more performance.
@@Mount56 My super tenere with an aftermarket slip on and new headers sounds way better than any Harley I've heard. But then again, you're definitely right. It is preference. Some people like the sound of their engine rattling apart and gaskets leaking everywhere.

Us motorcyclist are strange bunch, we don't really care which is better, we just go by what appeals to us as we walk away from it. I ride a Tuono Factory and 1290SDR. Those bikes aren't what many would call good bikes let alone reliable lol.

When Willie G davidson and Vaugh Beals got a bunch other investors to buy back harley things started to change, Namely with the development of the Evo engine and today with the Milwaukee 8. The twin cam engine was one of the best performing and most reliable ever created.
So rather than just regurgitating the same played out forum posts from others that dont really have much in the way of interest to understand, educate yourself.

Northern states. Old guys don’t ride em for awhile and I think it’s 6 carbs and they just don’t wanna deal with it. Maybe not $500 but I’ve seen a few “good”condition older goldwings for under a grand

If anyone hasn't seen a Goldwing ripping up The Dragon's Tail, make sure to take time and watch the videos. It's a big bike, but it can really rip through trails. Most importantly, you are comfortable while doing so. We had a guy with a ~2015 Goldwing that would ride with us on sport bikes and I was always impressed how well he could keep up. It did help he did amateur sport bike racing, but it's impressive seeing that big bagger on it's side scraping through corners.
Harley Davidson seems so lost. I never really understood Goldwings when I was younger, but now I totally see how it could be amazing! I just think you cannot be stressed when you're on that thing, life just rolls by comfortably.

Harley-Davidson is running out of old men to pay as much as a decent new car for their 1950s bikes. Their electric bike is a failure because you can't hear it coming from the next county. I'd rather have the Goldwing. Quiet, runs like a sewing machine, lasts forever, comfortable, reliable, doesn't shake. It's a two-wheeled car. Just get on and cruise.
HD has more people then ever and I love how all of you that have never ridden a day in your life talk like you know anything about motorcycles or HD. Maybe you kids should try and get on a bike instead of running your mouths
Goldwings are fantastic bikes. My dad has had various versions of them for the past 40 years. He's been across the country on them more than once.
I've also known a couple people who have stripped them down and made them into killer cafe racer-style bikes. That's what I'd like to do.

I love that the donut crew is here in LA. I drive like 100k miles a year and I know every building. Every sign and every pothole where they are driving
I bought a 89 Goldwing when i was 19 years old. To this day one of my favorite bikes. I have had 16 motorcycles from sport bikes to naked bikes to duel sports ect. My last bike was my favorite 2020 Yamaha MT09. But that old ass goldwing is my 2nd favorite bike. It had 100k miles when i bought it. I literally would get friends to sit on the back and we could do a wheelie. If nobody was on the back it would do a rolling burnout. Bike was only a beast for its size and age. I drove tf out of it for a little over a year. Nothing ever broke on the bike it was fantastic to drive.

We made fun of Goldwings in high school (early 90s) as the ultimate passenger's bike for having cushy seats and air conditioning. 30 years later it's crazy that's still true, but as a middle ager I now see that as a good thing!
Here in Canada I did a quick look. Depending on the year, condition, extras, $1000 - $2500 on 80's bikes. Newest 2022 one starts at $32,000.
I run Continental innertubes in my bicycle tires. Ive tried 6+ brands of innertubes and the continentals are the longest lasting so far. If their tires are as good as their innertubes they gotta be worth the money. Glad to see ya'll got a good sponsor like them.
No offense, but you're probably not riding much if you are noticing a difference in bicycle tube quality. I've had the same experiences between them all, as I just end up with a fat thorn or nail or something. But I'm also riding over 10,000 miles a year.
Finally going tubeless with my new roadie.
Currently running Conti DH tires on my enduro bike. They are on par with the other high end brands.

Through the touring Package on that cvo, and you're ready to do an ironbut. I have a custom Motorcycle shop in Chattanooga Tennessee, and you're on two of the best selling motorcycles in my part of the country. The harley-davidson keeps the best resale value, but whenever you pay over 50 grand from the start. I just can't see how they're going to keep, anywhere near a decent resale price! But I've never bought a brand new cvo Road Glide ,and probably never will. The older twin cam bike's is what I deal with, but eventually I'll have to work on those Milwaukie 8's if I am going to stay competitive with other used harley-davidson shops around the area.

My dad has a new Goldwing. Thing's a beast. Shape is still similar, has plenty of power and torque, comfy and, yes, still has reverse. The bike weighs a LOT, so the reverse is there to help you move it. Would recommend.
I love the motorcycle content. Please keep it going. Jerry and Nolan are one of my favorites to watch on CZcams but I find myself watching other channels with motorcycle content instead. As that other guy said a moneypit series on it would be awesome and probably significantly cheaper than a car as well. I feel like Nolan would do very good up to speeds on them as well and there’s quite a few he could make. Or even more history focused would would be cool. Either way more motorcycles please.

I’d love to see y’all’s take on a newer Goldwing vs a Harley. The newer wings are apparently even better than the GL1500. And I mean newer as in any GL1800 so about 2002 and up 😂😂😂
Keep in mind there are three generations named GL1800 now! The '02-'09 got refreshed heavily for '10-17 and the 2018+ model shares basically nothing with the previous generations. I'd like to see the current bagger 'wing vs this Harley for sure.

@um_fu1326 I actually bought 2. One is just a nonrunning donor I got for 350. But I have seen a few going in the thousands. Honestly if I had the money to burn I'd buy one. It's a pain restoring these things 😅

BTW - the Honda flat-6 engine also appears in their Valkyrie bikes - which are less "rolling easy chair" bikes than the GoldWings. (I love both, but the earlier Valkyrie models (90s-ish) are pretty amazing looking bikes.
Living in Australia the most amazing part of this episode for me was getting a Goldwing of any age for $500.

Here in the EU, I haven't seen one in good condition for less than 4k
Pakistan here, the most you could get for 500$ is a 150CC motorcycle, A Suzuki GS150.
I would sell my 150 in a heartbeat if someone offered me a Goldwing for 500$.

It's not a CVO Roadglide Limited though. The Limited has a Tour Pack/Topcase on the back and the old fairing/engine/screen/etc.
