Who knows? None of us know how many days we have left on this earth. And things can change in the blink of an eye, no matter how healthy we are. Can't worry about the time we have left... Just need to live life to the fullest and not squander the time we do have left. So sorry your friend in California had to go through all that but glad she can still enjoy the wind therapy.

This is like hurdling cats ! Realistically it is hard to say as the end of our riding journey can occur when we become 75 or 25. I honestly don’t have a age in mind but rather accept the fact that when my physical, mental and reflexes acuteness are compromised it will be it. This is not only about me but also for the safety of others. Great convo my friend. Cheers, Eddie

If I started with $100 and had to give $2 every year, I would already be done. I started when I was 8, and am now 66, as of last August. The thought of how much longer I have to ride never really crosses my mind. I will continue to ride until I am either posing a danger to others, or myself. Then, if switching to three wheels will still allow me to ride, so be it. But I cannot imagine a day where I think, "I'm too old for this stuff." Good topic, Eric.

My best guess, I've got a "bunch" of seasons left...🤔😏🤫... no matter how many more seasons there may be, but who knows. You know my back story, I stopped worrying about the future about 10 years ago... but I finally came around and began planning to have some fun, in whatever remaining years I have left. And, just like your California, friend, I too missed the dance, so what the heck, I fixed that, and now I get to enjoy the best of both the 3 wheel and 2 wheel worlds, and why not, you only live once. Yeah, I've been preparing for my retirement for last couple of years, and it's about to happen, and it's going to be fun.
I really enjoyed listening to this video, the older the viewer, the more appreciative they will be with your thoughts and commentary in this video' Eric, very thought provoking, and perhaps soul searching 🤔😁👍

Another great video! I feel like I have many riding seasons left since I made a few changes lately. I may have mentioned my story, but 12 years ago I was in a motorcycle accident where I broke three vertebrae in my back. The accident was not my fault, but I still suffered greatly (and had to pay for everything). I took 10 years off from riding. I promised my children I would be around to see them grow up, and when they were all gone, I couldn't take it anymore, I bought my Can-Am Spyder. I was going to get a Goldwing when my wife suggested I could probably not pick up the Goldwing too many more years if I dropped it, but I could probably ride the spyder another five years longer than a Goldwing. She also said she would ride with me if I got the spyder. She loves our rides together. I joke that we talk on the intercoms (helmet to helmet) more than we do at home. I also spent this year getting back in shape lost a bunch of weight started lifting weights, because (like you) I'm fighting for the number of seasons I have left. The wife and I took a five hour ride today looking at fall leaves, and then did a four hour hike up a mountain that is 1 mile high. I am trying to be a better motorcycle rider and the spyder makes it easier. I'm not quite 60 but I needed to get into shape so that I could stay active as long as possible and I feel awesome these days. I honestly do not miss two wheel riding. Today, on the Cherohala Skyway, I was deep into sweeping turns that turned out to have large amounts of water and debris well into the turn (not visible at the start of the turn). Had I been on two wheels, I would be sweating my lean angle, my speed, trail braking options, etc. I would wonder if I was going to be on the ground 1 second later with a torn up bike and body. A wise man once told me, "Go riding because it is good for you"! 🙂 You are 100% correct. Riding is good for you and I plan to do it as long as I am not a danger to myself and others.

Thanks, Jody. I really like this topic because it hits so close to home for me. That is why I shared my long story. It speaks to how I did give up riding for health reasons. I am so glad to have another chance to ride. It was hard to "retire" because of something that was not my fault. Now, I hope to give up riding when it is my choice whether it is 1 season from now or 10. I also hope to take some journeys like you and Tommy have.@@PurpleOnThree

How many riding seasons left for me? I’ll give you the same answer I would have half a lifetime ago-Not Enough. Motorcycling is inherently dangerous. Every rider should come to terms with the fact that the next ride could be your last. At the age of 72, I know my rides are running out, one way or another. My antidote for this toxic melancholy is to make bloody sure my next ride is my best, even if I’m just going to get bread. Cheers!

In 2018, at age 75, I sold my Triumph Bonneville and bought my first scooter, a Yamaha Smax. I am now 81 and the Smax has 8500 miles. Despite some health problems in the past seven years I remain in good health. This is thanks to good doctors, continually advancing medical technology, exercise and taking care of myself. I don’t ride as much as I used to and stick mainly to back roads. Beyond that I don’t think about my final season much. I don’t see myself ever going to three wheels but that is just me. When my health inevitably starts downhill I believe I will know the time.

  • @douganderson771
    @douganderson771 Před 9 měsíci +2

Interesting topic and certainly worth discussing , but I recommend we not dwell on it. I was lucky to have a solid 50 years of riding . Heard all the old guy stories and all the moan and groan ones too. At 73 I had a stroke that left me paralyzed , fought like hell to get better and got back way more than the Dr's ever imagined. Tried riding again ,but much of the joy was gone and the pain made me a danger to myself and the public. Thought about a trike , tried a few but the investment was more than I could justify. So my take on the subject is, when you feel it's time to stop . Do it on your terms and maybe you will get lucky and enjoy the grand kids and tell them all your stories.

After my near fatal accident this summer this is the topic that I still think about because I had 3 months of not moving much and nothing to do but heal and dwell on what ifs….
I knew my affairs were in order upon my death because I took care of all that years ago with my attorney. I urge others to do that because it gives your loved ones less to stress over during that sad time. My biggest concern was my kids after my accident. I wasn’t worried about money for them if I had passed…it was more of I want to see them grow and become strong women and hopefully see some grand babies. I also felt guilty for screwing up and having an accident. I guess seeing them cry and feel helpless as they looked at me all cut up and swollen with that neck collar on scared them and it hurt me to see them hurt. My youngest is 10 years old. She was a surprise baby but man I feel blessed to experience seeing her grow up into a beautiful young lady at my age. Many people think she is my granddaughter 😂😂
Let’s face it as a 20 or 30 year old father some/many don’t think about the final years of their lives or take the time to enjoy the baby growing up because they are working to build their future and it can be tough. My oldest who is in her 20’s helped me a lot and again I was blessed to have her around when I was down.
Anyway, I am a pretty healthy 60 year old man. I have stayed the course for 25 years now of eating right and doing functional fitness activities like BootCamps and CrossFit along with other hobbies like golf and boxing. I did this so I would enjoy life for as long as I can with a strong body and mind. God willing I think I have 20 more years of riding and living how I like to live which is staying very active.
I have a large bucket list and try and take one item off a year and I did one this summer with my youngest daughter.
Next year it’s a ride to Sturgis with a buddy about my age that missed this year due to a health issue but he always goes so I get a full service guide😇 when I go. Of course the 2021 CVO I am looking at will be my ride of choice. My Fatboy doesn’t have a 6th gear and it’s just not what I want for a ride like that.
I love to travel and have seen many countries through my life of being a military dependent and serving myself. So I have a few countries left I would like to visit but there is so much here in this great country that I want to see on my motorcycle. Out west is huge on my bucket list. Those massive open expanses of desert with pillars of rock and mountains around you or on the horizon would be epic to see.
I’m in Kentucky and I will hit the dragons tail next year since it’s not that far but it’s another item I want to do. I did put it off last year and this year but not next year! It’s getting checked off the list! The other roads in that area are better to actually ride and enjoy but I have to hit the dragons tail.
I could type paragraphs about what I want to do but I know we don’t get to choose when we go so I live life as full as I can. I adopted a new saying “YOLO” after my accident. You Only Live Once. So even though I always grabbed life by the horns and pushed to succeed in work I do it from that viewpoint of living a good life with no regrets now. I’m more kind in stressful situations than before, I let my loved ones know I do love them instead of just thinking they know, I realize that my work and the world will carry on without me so why carry their weight on my shoulders all the time.
Like I said….YOLO. There are no do overs and tomorrow never comes.😊

Ooof. Yeah, I know. I often think it's kinda sad that I'll only experience 80 to 100 rotations of the seasons. It's so magnificent to watch a winter come in, or magpies building nests and raising little birds, or watch the leaves of the trees change to golden and red. I want to see that more than 100 times. It's true for everything really, not just annual things.
I like to think that we're lucky to have won the "born lottery" in the first place, and as far as all the prizes we could get, this life in this time is a pretty good deal. I couldn't complain about not getting more than this, but I sure want more.
I'm sorry to hear about your friend, that's a sad and unnecessary incident but I'm glad she still gets to ride and loves it.

    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭23:1‭-‬6‬ ‭
[1] The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. [2] He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. [3] He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. [4] Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. [5] You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. [6] Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

No doubt that as we get older we wonder how long our future is going to be and what it will hold. I will be 65 in January and my best friend will soon be 69, we still ride 2 up with our wives on 900lb bikes and can still scrape the exhaust in the twisties. Very good topic for us experienced riders (notice I didn’t say old). I’ve been thinking of this a lot the past year. I retired in January of this year and am 67 yrs old. I have noticed the changes the last couple of years that have been creeping up on me thanks to Father Time so I recently sold my heavier Harley-Davidson motorcycle that I loved but realized was getting to big for me and bought a lighter BMW F750 GS. It’s been a great change of pace and I could see myself downsizing further as time goes along. I am definitely thinking that these tours I’ve always wanted to take better be sooner than later. Thanks for a great video. Ride safe.

Hence the taking a month off to ride across Italy at 35, while I'm young enough its relatively easy and old enough I can afford to take the cost in the chin. If I do make it past 55, holy cow that'll be a full life. Nothing is promised. We'll see.
