I've taken three MSF classes since I began riding back in 1987... The most recent one was my three-wheeler class in 2021.. and Tommy G has lined up an advanced course for us here soon. Looking forward to that one because advanced three-wheeler courses are not easy to come by. Great reminder! I actually think riding courses should be mandated, but that is my opinion. Good on Virginia!
Somehow, I knew this. I knew you had taken a few as you're very safety conscious. You lead by example, Jody! 😎
Been riding 45 years and still could have an accident any time. Less traffic and cell phones back when I first started riding. 👍👍
Cell phone have been a riders nemesis for many years now. Thank for stopping by.
listening to you say Old Man Winter is on his way out as I look out my window and watch the snow fall lol Great tips man!
Man, I feel for you. It will warm up very soon!
I’m so glad riding season is back upon us. These 50 degree Louisiana winters are brutal.
Ha! Bonus points for riding in the south. Remember that winter you picked up your bike? That's what most of us have to deal with. Ride safe, ride swift!
lucky duck hahaha
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures Yeah aged 10 years that week. Lol
This fall will be 2 years on my brake and hydraulic fluids.
Change my oil every 1,000 miles, and the transmission and primary every 3,000 miles and I do that myself. Much cheaper when you do it yourself. 😎👍👍
Wow, you sure are on top of your maintenance. I'm glad to hear it's working well for you.
Git Krakin !! Got the Mule all ready for the season...
Tires, Bearings ,Plugs, Brakes.
Let's freak'n go, Flip!!! I'm glad to hear you're on top of it. Ride swift, ride safe!
Cool! I had no idea there is a tool out there to check the water in the brake fluid... I learned something new today. Thank you, Eric!
It's super easy and I bet your Spyder riders would like to know about it. :)
All good points. Us all year riders need to do a yearly check list too but most of us don’t.
This is true. I'm envious of your all year riding. There's just not too many curvy roads down your way. :)
Great advice man. The first time I had my brakes flushed, my rear brake fluid looked like a pond sample. When I bought my bike I had ZERO maintenance experience!
There's no time like the present to jump in and tackle some of there maintenance chores now. The bug smasher needs some love too! :)
We can always learn something new! Here in PA, riders do not have to pay out of pocket for the MSF course.
Nice!
Here in VA, it seems to have turned into a profit center. The average fee is $300 to $400.
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures Wow, yikes. I think it was around $125 when I took it here in MA, and for $15 additional the RMV would mail you your new license with the Motorcycle endorsement as long as you passed the course, which was a MAJOR perk! Anytime we get to skip the torture of the RMV is worth a few extra bucks
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures yikes!!
My Slingshot is in for a MIL light which was caused by a recalled brake switch. They are running two weeks out. They promise it won’t be there that long.
Brake fluid - even if you don’t open the reservoir moisture seeps by the seals at the calipers from normal wear. I will NOT change brake pads without the calipers to be rebuilt. Once the seals have been tweaked to where they need to be replaced.
Never thought about the shield replacement but good to note.
Gas, I would never park a bike in the winter w/o a full tank. Less moisture that way.
Very helpful video
You are 100% correct. Moisture gets in there though the seals. I should also have mentioned that your open bottle of brake fluid you didn't use had moisture in it too. As always, my thoughts are aimed at trying to keep folks safe and accident free.
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures if only people would heed your warnings then you’re accomplishing your mission.
I chuckled at the state inspection one as my Harley wouldn't pass one but thankfully we don't have an inspection. Not that it's a hazard to ride but it's an outlaw bike without turn signals, one mirror currently and really loud exhaust. All are great tips non the less.
As always, I try to get folks to look at the big picture so they can have a smooth riding season. I sure appreciate the support.
All good points, Eric. In Queensland, there's no annual inspection required. A safety inspection is only required when the bike is sold. I keep my battery on a battery maintainer. I also carry a lithium ion battery booster in case of a flat battery issue. Will be seen on my upcoming video on Sunday evening (Aus time). Ride well. Cheets
I look forward to seeing it. I will always be an advocate for safe and trouble-free riding. The question is, does my content help folks? 😂
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures YES. Many of us look forward to your content and are greatly helped by your experience and advice!
@KrakensGarageandAdventures I always get something new from your vids. I didn't know a brake fluid moisture check tool was available. I looked it up, and it is available in Aus through Ebay. I'm definitely getting one of those. Thanks again Eric. Cheers
Great tips Eric ! Checking the brake fluid is actually something I just started doing last season (I bought the same gizmo) and as you noted it, good brakes is what stops your bucket from hitting a wall. As far as bleeding the system …. Touche ! I managed to get air into the system and it was a biatch so I ended up taking it to the dealership. Cheers amigo
I'm glad flushing the brakes system is on your regular agenda now. I would argue, it's the second most overlooked item on bike care behind tire pressure.
For me riding season is year round and so is maintenance. And Pennsylvania has an annual inspection requirement which provides an opportunity to have service done if I don't feel like doing something myself. I pay attention to brake fluid and make sure it doesn't get much more than two years old. My Himalayan and Vespa ET4 will be up for a flush in a few months.
I don't change my face shield until I notice an issue. And since I almost never ride at night anymore I get by with some imperfections that would be an issue at night.
Training. Absolutely a good thing. MSF works. Or just routine practice of things like emergency braking, swerving, and low speed figure eights and u-turns. And there are some great CZcams channels that deal with riding strategies -- something I feel is really important.
Great video Eric. Lots of good ideas. But I'll tell you, when I have to take care of five machines, scooters and motorcycles, now it can be a lot of work. Oh the simpler days of just one Vespa in the garage...
It's a mess for sure to maintain five vehicles. But! Look at the quality of life since you came to the dark side and became a bike horder. 😁😂
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures Oh no, something else I have to deal with!!!
I need a ton of stuff done 😢. Can’t do anything right now while I’m recovering from oral surgery. Good advice 🤘
We all sure hope you heal up quickly.
Hope you feel better, Greg!
Thankfully we didn’t get snow the other day, but a few of these on my list 🤘🏼
I feel for you good folks up north. You need to move your family to VA! 😉
All good stuff Eric!! Hubby is the HD mechanic so I am most fortunate with anything on my ride!!!!
All good tips and accidents any time any where!
I am fortunate to have a friend who is an instructor she likes to challenge us in opening season!
We just never know when we need to use them and of course one has to train the brain to respond accordingly not react!!
You have the best of both worlds being married to a tech and a friend that is an instructor! Thanks for stopping by, Gloria.
We just had another 3 inches of snow. hoping the roads are dry for the weekend, thanks Eric for another informative video, cheers Dave
Oh my word! I sure hope the snow stops soon for many of you. We've had very cold weather here in the last week. My thoughts in these type of videos are nothing epic. I'm just trying to get folks to think about some maintenance items that may be off their radar.
Great tips Eric. Thanks for sharing. Ride safe and enjoy. 👊✌️👍
This video is not the most gripping topic. It is my wishes that it moves a few to start scheduling their chores to ensure a great riding season. Thanks for stopping by, Rick.
Good video. So glad I don't live in a place where you need to do an annual inspection especially with all of the different bikes I have that would be such a huge pain in the ass!
It is a huge PITA when you have multiple vehicles. Thanks for stopping by, Adrian.
Thanks for the tips, Eric. Great advice.
It's kind of a boring topic, much like herding cats. Lol I'm trying to get folks to pull some lead time on a few things. Thanks for commenting, Richard.
All great tips. I always recommend for someone to take the MSF course. I've taken it three times myself.
The MSF should be mandatory in my opinion as a part of licensing…
I agree!
Over the years I've taken it many times. When a friend is getting into riding, I try to join them in the class. It's comforting for them to have someone to talk things through. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Nore.
Good Moto morning to you Eric
All great points and yes I need to remember the brake flush too.
Hopefully it will help folks have a smooth riding season. :)
GREAT TIPS man!! Now let's get KRACKEN!!
Let's go‼️🏍💨🦑
Super tips , thanks for twigging me on the face sheild replacement idea .I'm typically up to speed with most of the mechanical stuff but man its been way tool long since I've installed a fresh visor .You just saved me some greif , Cheers my friend ,you are the goods .
In this video, I tried to touch upon some of the more frequently overlooked items in a rider's life. I will always be an advocate for safe, trouble-free riding. 🏍💨🦑
LOL, I was in a snowstorm in Staunton yesterday! Every time I start thinking winter is over Ole Man Winter says "hold my beer" 🤣
LMAO! Okay, you comment made me laugh out loud. I hope to ride up your way and get a motel for good ride with you this season. Be well, Tom.
I think we should team up and do Skyline Drive, they have small cabins you could stay at in a couple of the campgrounds.
@UncleVoodoo I'm 100% in. Question is, mini moto or Café racer?
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures the only bike I have now is the Cafe Racer, you can bring what ever you want.
I'll let you decide when, as you'll have to reserve a cabin. Me and Jobu will just camp nearby.
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures I was just looking into this and the cabins run $50- $175 depending on the day, but I cant reserve a campsite... so it'd be a bit of a gamble.
Absolutely great advice! DC gets no inspection requirements yay!(?)
Taxation without representation! The VA inspections are a PITA when you multiple vehicles. But, I would like to think that it helps keep a few folks safe. Thanks for stopping by, Walter.
All excellent tips and easy to overlook. I'd love to see mandatory driver and rider training and testing every 5 years - and no free passes either, a real proper test at the end. Good advice and looking forward to your riding season opening up again mate!
I have to agree on the 5 year test. After all these years, I've seen too many folks scraped off the road. I hope this video jars a few noggins.
I missed this video😵💫🤪, and the points made are so important. The last time I had a bike that was overdue for a brake flush, I traded it in. And now, I see that I'll have 3 brake flushes due pretty much at the same time next spring. As for state inspections, NY also reqires them annually, at a mere cost of $6, which is peanuts to ride legally and have a little more peace of mind, but the inspection requirements are very minimal visual inspections, still better than nothing. I'm way overdue for an MSF refresher. Very useful tips, Eric 😁👍👍
Hopefully, this video gave you a few things to ponder. 🤔😂
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures Most definitely 😁
Some great tips there mate.
A good battery is so important (especially with modern bikes).
Arguably, flushing your brake fluid is second to tire pressure for being overlooked. I have zero doubts, your bikes are very well maintained. Thanks for stopping by, Matt.
Great pointers Eric! I wrecked a face shield last year. Just replaced mine.
As always, I try to get folks to look at the big picture for a smooth riding season.
Another great video by “Old winter”🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🫡🇺🇸🌵
Glad you said something about the HD brake flush. I was going to try it myself. I do not think I will now. My Dash has an indicator that lights up every 2 years to get that done. I guess the new bikes with the cool dash will do the same thing. Just ordered my new faceshield. I'm so glad you did not metion sit ups. I stay away from those lists. Great list and keep Kracken my friend!
I had no idea the Pan America had a sevice reminder for brake fluid. That's awesome! It's probably on of the most overlooked maintenance items on bikes. This riding season, if you're hitting up any bike meets in Fredericksburg, hit my up. I have a guest room with your name on it.
Thanks for the tips Eric. Haven’t been out riding yet. We had great weather today and tomorrow but can’t get out because of a medical procedure I had ☹️. But I will. Waiting on my part to come in on my recall from Honda.
I'm so sorry to hear you had medical issues. Cheers to a speedy recovery.
Good stuff sir! Riding season? Down here it’s all year round!
Big Smitty in da house! I sure do envy your year round riding weather. So when are you taking delivery of the copper HD?😂
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures I’ll take delivery as soon as my benevolent Uncle Eric sends the funds to Harley Davidson. 😂
Good pro tips for us all. Thanks for sharing.
I will forever be an advocate to motivate folks to have a safe riding career. The question is, Do I make a difference?😂
nice tis here, now we just need to wait for second winter to end up here.
I sure hope you folks up north transition to spring in the very near future. Thanks for stopping by, Ryan.
Great list. Some things I haven't really thought about. I didn't have to put my bike away for winter this year. Being a 2020 it is probably a good idea that I check the brake fluid and battery. Texas does require an annual inspection and I had that done last weekend.
Definitely flush your brake fluid. It's four years old. Thank for stopping by!
So, I hear that you came from a land down under.
Welcome back Eric, take care, ride safe.
We've been back since last fall. I took a month off from YT as I was burned out. I'm getting back to my usual content with minimal views. 😂
No wait for me out here Eric. Lol. Good points though.😎
Yeah, yeah, you had to rub it in! 😂 Enjoy that great SoCal weather. I hope you and Greg get a few rides in this year. Be well, Robert.
Excellent tips, Eric!
Learned a few bits in this video 👍
I'll be looking into that brake fluid test pen.
The last time I took an MSF course was over 10 years ago. It's a good idea to refresh.
Let's get Kraken!
It sure a cheap tool that verifies your brakes need flushed. I continue to advocate safe riding and maintenance for riders. Not sure I'm making a difference. 🤔😂
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures 😃 you've most definitely made a difference 😉
Really good info, thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful! Hopefully it helps a few folks for a smooth riding season.
Great tips Eric, as always. It saddens me that you are getting ready to ride as it means our riding season is coming to an end 😥 Well warm comfortable riding anyways
I was thinking about that the other day. I have had to live vicariously through you and our friends on your side of the world riding while it's been cold here. Thanks for stopping by, BB.
Thanks for the tips - I need to schedule a service for the Harley [and I already know it needs the brake fluid flush... which a mechanic friend of mine *highly* recommended that I have the dealer do] AND clean my visor... maybe I can source a new one for my Harley half helmet.
You certainly keep up on the maintenance of your bike. Ride safe, ride swift.
@KrakensGarageandAdventures I rake bike maintenance quite seriously. If a car breaks down, you could be stranded, or slide to a stop... if a bike breaks down, it could mean injury or worse!
Great tips Eric
Thank you, Larry!
great tips brother !!!
Thanks for stopping by. Keep posting the trail rides.
Great tips ....👍👍🏍️✌️👋
Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Moe.
some great advise Eris👍👍
sorry Eric fat finger
Thank you! I sure hope this reminds a few folks about some of the more overlooked items a rider deal with.
Uncle Eric ❤️
In the house! 🏍💨🦑
Good morning Eric.
Good moto morning King 👑 OO!
You're first. Winner, winner, chicken 🐓 dinner‼️
Yes, it’s getting close. My little asphalt-lovin’ heart is going putter-pat! Good tips. Thanks!
Im taking a motorcycle saftey course this May :)
Awesome! It will be interesting to hear your take on it.
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures I'll definitely try and record while there. We'll see how well received that will be with the instructors
👍👍👍
Ohhh you hippies with riding season etc🤣🤣🤣
All jokes aside MY tip would be also make sure YOU the rider is in shape also… It will take a little time for the old bones to adjust as well and please dont ask me how I know🙄
That's a good point. Exercise your mind and your body helps keep your wits about you while riding. Ride safe, ride swift!
Good tips but man what is that on your head
Oh, you didn't know! 😂😂😂
They are definitely some good tips Eric!!! After having my MC license for about 35 years now, looks like I’ll be taking my first MSF course if it all works out. Great video Eric!!
The beginner MSF course will be a little boring but help some. The advanced is definitely a good choice if you have the time. It will be interesting to hear your thoughts after the course.
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures I totally agree with you on that but I will be taking it with my son so that will make it exciting for ne
