The chart you showed which gives an indication of Hydration reminded me of a story. When I was the General Manager of a Mine site, my Safety Officer placed these charts in the Lavatories, just above the Urinals. When he saw me on site he mentioned that he placed the chats up. I said I saw that, but there was a slight problem. He said , "Oh, what's the problem?" I said " No matter how much I tried, I couldn't urinate high enough to do a comparison" 🤣🤣 I got him! True story. Cheers

If you wait until you're thirsty to drink, then you're already behind in the amount of water you need. I've been dehydrated before on the spyder and it's no joke and I learned my lesson.... It can cause AFib symptoms...

I don't care for the sports drinks myself.... But sometimes I will add some to my water and dilute the sports drink.Luckily I have my bottle holder on the side of the spyder so I can take drinks pretty frequently... usually just water.

Monday morning will be about 60F here and up to 75F by lunchtime. Still warm enough to need a lot of water. I can stomach lemon-lime Gatorade if it's cold. Horrible warm. Dehydration is easy to get on a motorcycle. Especially with mesh jackets. I always wondered why desert riders wear full jackets with only vents. Keeps more moisture in. Wicks slower. And you feel the cooling better. I guess there are lots of tricks.
I just drink a lot of water. Freeze a couple bottles to always have something cold. Stop a lot.
Good reminders Eric. Thanks for sharing them.

People don't realize how much dehydration slows down your mental functions like ability to recognize and react quickly to changing circumstances. It really is a silent killer. And caffeine is also dehydrating so if people are stopping for caffeinated drinks on long rides they should also be hydrating with that. Good on ya for sharing this.

Really good topic at the right time of the year. Because my fuel ranges are only 125-150 miles I am normally stopping for gas and i'll usually drink water, sports drink, or even body armor. Like today I road around 380 miles in about 6 hours and I pounded 28 oz of body armor, 16 oz of water, 16 oz of power aid and topped it off 10 miles from the house with a monster. LOL.. I normally like the grape or berry flavors but good idea on the tablets you mentioned. BTW one thing to mention isn't just the temperature outside people need to be concerned with...they also need to factor in the humidity as a very humid day will drain the liquids you intake faster than on a dry heat any day!!!

Key point is being hydrated BEFORE the ride like the night before… What helps me is veggies like cucumber, green bell peppers with some seasoning etc Also Electrolytes Electrolytes Electrolytes!!! And these are coming from a previous Heat casualty as we call it in the Service… Also some kind of nuts(almonds, pecans, peanuts) all salted of course. Salt helps with water retention and thats why Saudis(mostly) carry salt with them when travelling with camels similar to sugar cubes… Great video Eric Last Wednesday we hit 114 here and today we got our first rain as far as monsoon season… Absolutely no riding for me in the heat… Also the water has to be in room temp to quench you NOT cold.

This is great info Eric!!! Most people are dehydrated or starting to dehydrate most of the time. I've found ensuring I am well hydrated a few days before a trip or prolonged heat exposure helps too. 2 or 3 days before the trip start ensuing you are drinking the recommended amount of water daily and staying away from alcohol (or keeping it to a minimum) and other known things that can lead to dehydration. Starting at a deficit is not good and you will be playing catchup all day. Ride safe!!!!

What a great topic. Something very prevalent to us as you know. Pottsy only having one kidney we have to be very equipped with hydration. In Australia we have Hydralite - same sort of product as you shown here. It gives instant hydration to the body. We have had many circumstances on the bike where Pottsy is ok one minute then instantly weak, light headed and sleepy - almost like a morphine drugged effect. Now that , on a road two up is dangerous. Like you said, it’s good to know the signs of hydration for your body.

Great points. I made the decision not to ride yesterday just because it was too hot (riding just to ride, no errands involved or anything pressing). I’m also worried about other drivers who just get in their cars and are focused on getting it cooled down and not always on what’s ahead of them on the road, or those who refuse to turn on their car’s AC because of the extra consumption of gas. Distractions and short tempers get mixed together.
I’m sure that doesn’t happen a lot, but if my gut tells me it’s not a good time to ride, I try to listen to it. Is there an expiration date for the electrolyte tablets?

To my knowledge, there's no expedition on the brand I chose. I like these because they stow easy on the bike. Thanks for stopping by.

Great info here, Eric - dehydration was a big factor in me just about falling out at VAMM23. Won't happen this year - I know better. Those tablets are a GREAT idea, gonna pick some of those up! I wonder if you can use a pill cutter or knife to cut them to fit a regular water bottle?

I'm sure you could. They also make powdered versions. The tablets are easy for me to stow on a bike.

Top topic. I usually have a 2L camel pack on my back. And it’s amazing how much of it I will consume in summer on rides longer than 1hr.
