Completely useless video though if you ignore most of the important background information. Özil posed in the picture at the moment where Erdogan was about to be elected, where they killed oppositional people and threatened Turkish politicians like Özdemir in Germany. Özil also had the great idea to choose the headline "my president" for this picture. Even the relationship with Turkey was quite bad because of Erdogan and then posting a picture like that before the World Cup and elections is completely dumb especially with that headline. Then they wanted to kick out Özil since he has never said anything about that and just then he decided to withdraw to take the opportunity and let his manager blame everything on racism. No matter what you say but do your research better because his behaviour was trash.

Calling a leader autocrat does not mean anything. Many can call Orban or Trump the same. Germany can support military dictatorship in turkey as long they do whatever Germany desires of them and it has done so in the past. No one would have criticized ozil if he photographed with the turkish president who allowed for hijab ban in parliament of of muslim majority country. That is not autocratic from western europe's perspective. Does not mean it has to be perspective of everyone. Ozil is allowed to have Turkish family, connections, respect for elected turkish leaders. He is a celebrity sports star who people want to have photos with. He is not ambassador of german foreign ministry. It is only natural for him to have desire to be on good terms with the highest leader of his ancestral country as a footballer and wanting to support football in turkey. The guy played his heart out always for germany and created chances against south korea that were missed. Hypocritical and shameful of german football association to make him scape goat. So called champions of freedom and free speech did not have tolerance for an openly muslim player.

That's wrong! You Özil Fanboy! It's fact: Mesut Özil wasn't even a key player at winning the World Cup 2014. 2014 he was one of the weakest German players. 80 % of the games he plays a big shit. That started in even in his last period at Real Mardid. That is why Real sold him to Arsenal. At Arsenal he had good games, but most of the games he was invisible. The managers/trainers gave him 1 Mio chances. But Özil was lazy all the time. There is no connection to his turkish roots at all. And the criticism had nothing to do with his Turkish heritage, but with the kind of person Recep Erdogan is.
When Hertha BSC Berlin won against Borussia Dortmund, many people wanted to take a picture with white Berlin Player Marvin Plattenhart. Among them was AfD (a right wing German party) politician Frank Scheermesser.
Plattenhart, who had no idea who this guy was took a photo with him and when the AfD posted this photo on their social media, Plattenhart got immediately confronted with it.
But unlike Özil, he did not defend that picture with a far right politician, he immediately distanced himself from it and actually fought in court to get the photo taken down from every AfD social media channel.

germany has a very simple and blunt culture. u have to show passion will and fight for everything u do especially in football. there are not many german footballer who had talent in form of playing skills. german players mostly all came through passion fighting and will. özil was one of the best if not the best german footballer as playmaker but his passion wasnt recognized, at least visually. i can remember my grandparents getting upset when german players didnt sing along with the national anthem - not just özil - and slumped their shoulders during the game and meanwhile you hear the Italians screaming their national anthem and you can feel they are proud and love to play for their country. many dont understand why the players dont show the german mentality, especially when they earn millions from the sport, which is loved in germany. u can see the same phenomenon with gnabry and sane for example. the combination of "migrant", who doesnt work and show bad body language, and the thing with erdogan were like a godsend for the media and society and unfortunately led to how the germans think about özil today. no question, being close to erdogan wasnt the best idea, but what we made of it wasnt fair to özil, who has done a lot to date.
i think that nowadays for many germans the admiration of özil stops where the football field ends. geniuses always come with a flaw and mesut was a genius on the field who sadly will not get any recognition.
