The sad reality, as a Barca fan, is that this is the Messi we've seen in big games for the past half decade. And this does not mean that everyone is blaming Messi for the entire meltdown against Madrid, since I know a lot of fans are so hyper-sensitive about any criticism he receives that they turn to hyperbole. We saw this against Atleti in the second leg in 15'. We saw this against Juventus in 16'. We saw this against Roma in the second leg in 17'. We saw this against Liverpool in the second leg in 18. We saw this against Bayern in 19'. In big UCL games later in his career, when it gets tough, he hangs his head and stops working completely. Against Bayern, he was the Captain, and he literally lost possession 2 or 3 times late in that match and didn't even bother to try and retrieve it. Just gave up. We would never see that from Puyol when he was Captain or Xavi when he was Captain. Lose? Yes. Lose bad? Yes. Lose like that? No. 36 year old Modric literally put in more effort than him in the last half hour of that match, which was the biggest match for PSG and the entire reason he was brought in.

Yeah, i agree because PSG doesn't have any structure in the system everybody knows one thing pass the ball to Mbappe and he will save us that is not how it works. during the whole game how many times was Messi left unmarked and he was begging for the ball and never got it PSG kept searching for the crowded spaces no room and forcing to play where there is no free space even at 45+ i saw Verratti coming in the same that Jordi Alba used to do and guess what Messi at the penalty spot totally alone unmarked begging for the ball and didn't get it from Verratti that was the moment that Messi stopped playing and gave up there is so much a player can do before getting frustrated.
The moral of the story is nobody gives him the ball Messi is a totally different player in Argentina than he is in this PSG in Argentina he is more alive more like Barcelona type and watch him in the next WQ qualifiers do exact that and then people start asking questions why doesn't he play like that for PSG because you don't include him you ignore him It's a shame that he ended up here in PSG instead of Man City with his best friend Pep. Pep would know how to play him and get the best out of him just like he did in Barcelona.

In my opinion, a big fault of this mess is Marquinhos. He has been the captain of this PSG team for a while now, it’s up to him to get everyone calm and collected. The back line crumbled after the first goal and as the captain and leader of the back line, it’s your job to to calm your teammates down and organize yourselves. A great example is someone like Van Dijk, Puyol, and even Ramos. These guys are true leaders at the back. Marquinhos failed to do his job. Also, it has been very clear for years that Messi is NOT a leader. Messi is not expressive or vocal at all, but that’s okay because it can be someone else’s job. I think it’s very ignorant to solely blame Messi for the loss.

You can't expect players to just turn it on like that when there is a huge game if they aren't being prepared for it and tested on a regular basis. And for PSG there is absolutely no pressure for them until around February/March when CL knockouts begin. Because they usually breeze through the league and group stages. But their problems go deeper than that. Look at Bayern. They're in a similar position. A super talented team in a "weaker" league. Yet come CL knockouts they usually perform well and go deep in the tournament. PSG's problem is they invested in the wrong players. They only went after the sexiest names for marketing purposes. I’m probably one of the biggest Messi fans out there, I’ve seen all his individual highlights in basically every single one of his games since 2009 and I can tell you I’m quite disappointed. And it’s true, this isn’t the first or second time we see Messi do this. I’ve seen this attitude in many important games. Trust me it’s not age, bc yes Messi isn’t as fast, doesn’t have the same acceleration as before, so yes he is slowly aging but as a decent soccer player myself, I know when a player is hungry and passionate. It’s evident, the sense of urgency, the desire to want the ball at your feet, the desire to run at players and turn them left and right, and that’s what Messi does best. Messi has never been a player who is extraordinarily fast, Messi has always depended more on his low center of gravity, his unparalleled ball control at such great speeds, and his perfect timing body feints, so he could honestly still be doing that all that at 34. If Modric can run and hustle at 36 then Messi is definitely still physically capable of doing the same. Messi has never been a vocal leader so I obviously would never expect that from him, but there’s so much he could have done, especially in the second half after the goals came, but honestly it doesn’t matter bc he has done this other times as well so I honestly question his passion and hunger for the game.

Messi is not quite motivated at PSG right now because of the coach and some players who refused to help him on the field and their preference to help Mbappe rather than the team. I have been watching Messi playing for 12 years and I am confused about him at PSG . There is something wrong at PSG he refused to dribble and do magic in the final third which he has been doing all his life at Barca.

This defeat made me so happy for 4 main reasons:
      - Having an unlimited amount of money to buy mercenaries and build TOTY FUT Squad in real life DOESN'T work! Everyone see that turning PSG into QSG year after year was an antisportive idea.
      - Diminishing Nasser's argument against the superleague (the guy who illegitimately make an opposition to the biggest historical clubs which asks for a change in football against UEFA and proposes some radical reforms in order to deconstruct the monopolistic positon of UEFA in football). Some clubs would stupidly think that these historical clubs claim now the superleague because their clubs are going down but this argument is stupid at first. A lot of reasons are behind these but Nasser was hiding behind this one only.
      - Giving PENALDO another doubt and frustration for next year to find his future club! A club at his service to give him his unconditional satisfaction of letting him believe that he's the best player in the world and that he's superior than his teammates and he's of course the reason why the team is wining trophies. Now that he saw that PSG's plan to make TOTY stars squad is completely questioning by everyone around the club as these players are considered mercenaries without humility; PENALDO's plan to go to PSG next year is almost dead because everyone will mock PSG to continue in the wrong direction! It will no more considered a mistake but a stupidity and absurdity from the club! Their consolidated image and reputation will be completely destroyed. It will be funny what reaction will PENALDO and his agent will have about all of this because his only plan was PSG and his relationship with Manchester United is now dead lol with everyone inside or outside the club! Worst case scenario for PENALDO!
      - Finally, people who voted and considered Neymar the third best player in the world for almost 8 years now are today completely discredited. His arrogance, humility and stupidity will never make him a golden ball winner! He had a very good potential at BARCA and should have been the next golden winner after Ronaldo and Messi but he never made a very high impact in PSG! He ruined himself by being injured or too much suffisant on the field where you can see players who fight 100 times more in other clubs and therefore showed 100 times more continuity in terms of performance. We should not give a goden ball to a guy because of his potential but because if his performance. Benzema has less potential than Neymar but who shows a level of performance higher than the other because of work and professionalism. Neymar=antiprofessionalism athlete!

Been saying it for a long time. Messi is done at the highest level. It's mind boggling how people are only seeing it now. What? Now he's finished but 6 months ago he was Ballon d'Or "best player on the planet?". Nonsense. He's been steadily declining for years. Last year's Ballon d'Or was a sham and everyone who isn't a biased Messi worshipper or Barcelona fan knows it's true. Even last year his stats were very deceptive. He went something like 3 whole months without scoring from open play. Only penalty kicks and free kicks. Think about that. When you think of Messi you think of a guy who would dribble past defenders with ease and score all sorts of difficult goals. For me he was officially finished then and there. I don't ever remember CR7 or Lewandowski going 3 whole months without scoring from open play. Keep in mind a season is 9-10 months long. So he essentially went a 3rd of the season.
Messi was never a super athlete. He's not a Henry, CR7 or Mbabbe. He doesn't have the physical gifts in terms of raw speed, power or size. He relied on excellent intelligence, a wonderful touch and quickness. The quickness and his stamina has declined severely over the years. You're now left with a small guy who doesn't have the quickness to get past players at will, or the stamina to run for 90 mins. This happens a lot to smaller finesse players. Reminds me of Del Piero after he got old. Dude became useless at everything but passing or set pieces. Unless he got lucky and a simple chance came his way. If I were Messi I'd call it a day. Maybe go play for Boca Juniors or River Plate and make the Argentina fans happy. He's not all of a sudden going to turn it around at 35 or 36. It's only going to get worse and his body is only going to fail him more and more.

PSG simply have no structure. They just signed a bunch of superstar players and expected it to work. They have an incompetent manager. PSG elimination falls solely on the defense and Donnarumma. The midfield and attack were in full control of the tie till the 60th minute. Once the Donnarumma mistake happened they backline simply crumbled. We can sit here and blame Messi because its easy, however the second and third goal literally have nothing to do with him. Neymar and Verratti as decent as they were in this match, their mistakes ultimately led them to their demise. Neymar forces a pass to Messi, and doesnt even successfully foul Modric which leads to the second goal. Verratti completely gives away the ball right after the kick off and concede. Its nonsensical to even bother blaming Messi in this regard. We Messi great? No he wasn't. Was Messi bad? No he wasn't. Messi, Verratti and Paredes had complete control of the game up to that point.

One factor that pundits never consider: the player’s upbringing. Many of professional footballers came from some sort of money. Not many of them were kicking a ball on the street barefooted, in the barrios with all your friends. Not many of them had parents who were worried about how they would feed their child next.
Messi, Ronaldo, and a few others currently in the tops leagues continue to play because this was the sport that gave them everything. They’re more grateful for football than any other person in the world. They know what the sport means for them, for their families, and the barrios they came from. Messi had such games even in the past. Remember several games, where Barca was crushed by oppenents (Bayern:)) and Messi midgame gave up and stopped trying..

Jules is right. Kroos wasn’t fully fit coming back from injury and Ancelotti made the call to take him off early. The same exact situation with Neymar but he played the full 90. Kroos is world class champions league winner World Cup winner and he’s off. There is a clear hierarchy at PSG and Poch ain’t at the top.
